A long awaited live retrospective of
the band's entire career....from their very early years as an electric
band in 1965 to their very last years through 1995 featuring the songs
that never made it to record before.....This 5 CD box set will feature
all previously unreleased material.......primarily live performances along
with some rehearsals and unreleased studio performances including outtakes
from American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. The box set will have very
elegant and deluxe packaging....including a special hardbound slipcase
in hemp fabric, a full hardcover book with never-before-published photos,
and featured essays from many prominent writers....plus an additional hardcover

set promises to be a true collectors item.
Grateful Dead Records/Arista Announce the Release of "So Many Roads"
NEW YORK--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1999--Given the Grateful Dead's
vast release of material from their vault (14 and soon to be 15 "Dick's
Picks" two-track shows, as well as 5 CD's of multitrack live material),
it comes as a bit of a surprise that they have not yet released a full-bore
boxed set of rarities and obscuriana.
Your wait is over. "So Many Roads (1965-1995),"
out November 9,1999 (price ~$49.98 to $69.98) on Grateful Dead Records/Arista,
will be a 5-CD package full of all the goodies Dead Heads have been awaiting,
including studio out-takes, inspired moments, and you-name-it.
"So Many Roads (1965-1995)" was compiled by a committee that included
the late Dick Latvala, Grateful Dead Hour host David Gans, Wired editor
Steve Silberman, co-author of Skeleton Key: A Dictionary for Deadheads,,
and Blair Jackson, editor of the best fan magazine of all time, The Golden
Road, and the new Garcia: An American Life. It will feature archival packaging,
with unpublished photos and essays by prominent writers.
UPDATE FROM STEVE SILBERMAN
Here's the tracklist for "So Many Roads (1965-1995)," a 5-CD box
set which will be released from Arista/GDP on November 9th in stores
and on
the Web. The archival quality set will include many unpublished
photos of
the band in a hardcover booklet, along with essays by Eric Pooley,
the
chief political correspondent of Time (and a serious Deadhead), Mikal
Gilmore, who wrote the two great books "Shot in the Heart" and "Night
Beat," Richard Gehr of Spin, Gary Lambert of the GD Almanac, David
Gans of
the GD Hour, and myself. The track-by-track commmentary is by
Blair
Jackson.
Frankly, we wanted to keep the surprise factor going for a few
more
weeks at least in the spirit of Dick Latvala's approach to the Dick's
Picks
series, but ICE magazine spilled the beans last weekend. (By
the way, the
article in ICE makes it appear that I gave them the dates and locations
of
these tracks. I didn't, and am annoyed, but whatevuh. I
know how
competitive journalism is.)
We hope you like it!

NOTES: ICE magazine incorrectly listed "Passenger" on disc 3.
We
wanted to use the track, but it made the CD too long. (The CD timings
are already maxed out over the standard limit for CDs.) Also,
the Dark
Star jam from '74 fades in a few minutes into the jam. It would
have
been better to include the whole thing, but again, we bumped our heads
against the 78-or-so-minute limit for CDs, and it's a fantastic passage
of music in this context.
