What'd everybody think of the 01's on Conan?

I thought the Wheel was kind of a strange choice, not a song I'm used to hearing w/o a 20 minute space jam leading up to it?! But it was pretty fun to see the guys on tv like that. I especially enjoyed the shots of the drummers. I'll watch it again tonight when I get home, I was nearly asleep by the time they came on last night. Anybody know if that's pretty close to the typical Phil/Friends arrangement, or is it yet another?

I just watched it again and noticed that Bobby blew a lyric.

I liked the performance a lot more tonight than last night. Kinda like the second night of Terrapin.

C ya all Philly through Indy!

Yea, towards the end of the song, Bob came in with "Round..." of the round round robin run around part, but quickly pulled back. Phil didn't even flinch. They both looked a little stiff, but it was nice to see Bob give Jimmy a little hug of sorts after the song finished, they were both smiling large.

What are you referring to when you say tonight's performance vs. last night's? Did they play somewhere else besides Conan? Thanks.

As for me, I'll be in Hartford and Chicago at the very least, getting fired up.

stiff...
that was the word that had been escaping me when i watched the show. i thought it was a limp version. they didn't sound very together, especially vocally. i understand that there was not a 20 minute jam leading up to it. and why was bill shoved off into the corner? i remember when plq was on kilborn. night of a thousand stars rocked. maybe the problem was that phil didn't have on the wrist bands...

i am waiting for spring for the NECESSARY trip to the left coast for plq.

What I meant by the performance "tonight" vs. "last night" was the fact that I watched it again on tape Wednesday night. Sorry that I wasn't very clear. But anyhow, the point was that the peformance grew on me a bit when I watched it the second time.

I agree though that it seemed to lack energy and they have to do something about the vocals. Salad toppings seemed to help a lot at Alpine!

I was expecting them to rip out a smokin' Sugar Magnolia or something like that.

They can't rip up "Sugar Mag" in the 4 Minutes they were given...
They really had very little choice as to what to play..given the "Time Constraints".

" They can't rip up "Sugar Mag" in the 4 Minutes they were given... "

I am certainly not one to be argumentative, nor do I assume to know what is best for the band, however there is a nice little 3 minute 19 second Sugar Magnolia on American Beauty.

I just saw that the second song they played on this tour was The Wheel. I won't get into all the ways that could be interpreted. I just think it is interesting. I also look forward to seeing a review of it.

>a nice little 3 minute 19 second Sugar Magnolia on American Beauty.

And how does THAT studio version of "Sugar Mag" compare with say:

Fillmore East.4/29/71
Winterland..12/31/72
Kezar.....5/26/73
Rochester.9/2/80
Lewiston..9/6/80
MSG.......3/10/81
MSG.......9/18/90

I could list HUNDREDS...

"Sugar Mag" on the RECORD, is a nice, lii' ditty.
"Sugar Mag" performed live is a RRRRROCKIN' DANCE PARTY MONSTER.

There is NO comparison.

And Wheel is comparable to the time constraints? I don't seem to remember seeing too many 4 minute Wheel's live either. They had to choose something but I wouldn't pick Wheel(even though one of my fav tunes)because I never associate it by itself without a jam in and out and it seems weird to me that way. But then playing it second in Roanoke, maybe they are just trying to re-enforce the idea of, the Wheel is going to keep rolling.

No...you're right...it's NOT a 4 Minute Song..they way WE know it..i.e. the jam INTO it and OUT of it...BUT...the SONG ITSELF IS short.
And that DID fit.

The LENGTH of "Sugar Mag" is more in the jam in the MIDDLE between "Sugar Mag Proper"...and "Sunshine Daydream", as well as in how WILD they wanna get WITHIN "Sunshine Daydream"...that CAN'T be compromised as much as a jam IN and OUT.

Most people take their glasses off for TV so that the lights don't flash off them. Would have been a great visual though.

I think the wheel was the perfect choice. It's lyrics sum up the best why they are all back together for the first time since jerry's
passing. I did not get to see the preformance on TV but I was able to hear it via "The late night with Conan O'Brien web site. They have a archive of past musical guests section that you can click on to hear each preformance. It sounded pretty sweet to me.

Wheel was an odd choice, I liked the version of FOTD Garcia & Grisman did on Letterman that time, I thought that TOO should have played Box of Rain like the encore on 8/4/02 that would have been cool and would have been given respect in the five minutes they had. Anyway, Phish on Saturday Night Live w/ Al Gore should be interesting, not sure how I feel about the bands on TV at all, but...

I have to say after following and listening to the Dead for about 20 years I still never understand the excitement of a blown lyric or the fact that Mickey wore Bobs wristband .. Hey did anyone notice the boogie hanging from Phils nose ????
