From South Carolina on I-20 I would go ahead and drive to the venue. But if you have to take the transport, here's a good place to check out. http://www.itsmarta.com

Your better off driving for more than just location reasons. Marta on that side of town goes through some rough ass neighborhoods. Coming up during the day wouldn't be bad but riding back at night would be an adventure to say the least.

I've taken MARTA to several shows at Lakewood (aka. Hifi Buys) and will have to respectfully disagree with Scott about the safety issue. The bus takes you straight from the venue to the rail station - no stops. And with a couple thousand other happy heads, y'all should be just fine.

With that said, I would drive to the venue anyway.

Get there early - Parking is included in the cost of your ticket, so take advantage of it. The paved lot (enter on the Metropolitan Pkwy side) has one sweet row of parking right up against the tree line that will put you in the shade, give you plenty of space to set up some chairs and a cooler, and will make getting out at the end of the night pretty easy. I plan on being in that row with a cooler full of Sweetwater 420s (supporting the local brewery) and plenty of H2O.

This is gonna be the only show I get to see on this leg of the tour (bad planning on my part) so I'm hoping that it will be a fun one. The setlists I have seen lately have been monsters. Can't wait to hear SCRANTON!

Might as well start my wish list too. How about Dickey coming out with the P&F boys for a nice big MOUNTAIN JAM!!!!

From an Atlanta resident:

both scott and michael are right, "rough ass" is mild to descibe the neighborhood but the marta-ride outta there is pretty quick however the bus from the lakewood station only runs hourly, need to get there real early to find a tree to park next too...enjoy everybody...scott{scuyute@hotmail.com,scuyute@hotmail.com}

From a real Atlanta resident-

Do not park along the tree line because those are the cars that get robbed because people can sneak thru the woods and take your shit with them back into the projects. This venue is in the worst section of Atlanta bar none.

I would strongly advise against Marta because it is very inconvienient. You have to take a train and transfer on a bus which takes an hr longer then driving.

75/85 south exit university street go left and it will take you to the back lot. Avoid Metropolitan Pkwy as that area is filled with crack, street whore as well as police...

Metropolitan Parkway....hahahahah...that's funny.

It'll always be Stewart Avenue to me.

Atlanta Dead Heads. Where you at? The show is in a few days and we've hardly got any posts?

From what I've seen the past several shows it looks like we'll probably get to see Bobby and Phil play together. Yes, indeed. I sure hope so. That'll be as close to a reunion show as I'll get to see. I won't be able to make it to Alpine.

I'll be drivin' the gold tacoma with the SYF tag on the front. See ya'll there. Saturday is gonna be da bomb!!

Let's just hope there's some fungus among us.

Zen,

I'm in row A with the Rev. Look forward to seeing you there. I'm about 20 minutes South of Lakewood, and I think I'm hosting a small get together before the show. If you, or any other Zoner friends, want to come, shoot me an e-mail and I'll give you directions. Probably party from about 12:00 to 2:30 - ffood, booze, aand lots more good old fun.

Also, I agree that MARTA ain't the way top go to Lakewood unless you want a real pain in your ass before and after the show.

HEY GUYS. KEEP AN EYE ...I SAW THIS ON THE OTHERONES MESSAGE BOARD...

Help! My daughter Chelsey has been following bands from Ohio to New York, New Jersey, Maryland, etc. She was suppose to be home in Hampton, VA on Monday July 22, she was planing on attending the concert (Bob Weir) in Portsmouth, VA on Tuesday .

I wired money to here in PA on Sunday, but the money was never picked up, and noone has heard from her since Sunday. Chelsey was calling every couple of days to let me know she was OK. I don't think she ever reached Virginia.

Chelsey is 24 years old, very pretty (often mistaken for being an Indian), has long brown hair and brown eyes. Has been a faithful follower of Grateful Dead for years.

Please if anyone knows Chelsey or has seen her contact me ASAP. This is not like Chelsey at all, and I really fear something has happened to her.

I can be contacted by e-mail or by phone (757) 825-6399.
Thank you for replies so far. My daughter Heidi has also posted a bulliten on Ratdog message board. I am trying to find digital camera to take a picture of her photo. The next concert is set in Raliegh, NC tonite at Altel Pavillion, and then in Charlotte NC. please if anyone sees her contact ASAP. We do know that at previous shows she was selling grilled cheese sandwiches and beer for money. She drives a teal sunfire or sunbird with Virginia plates. Thank you all. I would guess that it will be a lot like the past few nights. Dickey > RD > PHIL

Dickey probably plays fer an hour
RD probably an hour and a half
P 2 sets totalling around three hours with a 30min intermission

Show starts at 3:30pm. I would guess the lot opens at 2:30pm.

I'm only speculating here but I'd be willing to bet I'm pretty accurate.

Have a good show ya'll

Well, well... hate that I missed Mtn. Jam and Duprees last night, but I'm ready for the Quintet in my home town. I'm with Peter in thinking we'll get a Blue Sky tongiht, and hopefully another Viola (split up throughout the set - or better yet, let's open and close the whole damn show with a big fat Viola sandwich).

Anybody looking for something to do before the lots open up can give me a call at 770-389-5080 (or 770-833-3588 if I'm on the cmputer). I'm about 20 minutes south of the show and up and at it alerady. Headlights here for the party, Rev. Buddy Greene's coming (when he drags himself out of bed after last night), as well as a few others. Nothing huge, but lots of fun to be had - free food, booze, and whatnot. We are in my town, and I am a pretty hospitable host (just ask Headlight, we actually started to Celebrate the show last night).

Rev., get your ass up and get on down here or I'll have to start calling and harassing ya'. Everyone else is welcome too, I'm having some fun already (looks like a long day). We'll be here until about 2:30.

From the fourth row, dead center, I watched waited, wondering what Phil, Warren Jimmmy, Rob and John would dish up for us tonight. the lights come on and all the band members walk out. Warren picks up his guitar and walks up to the mic, with the music stand right next to it. Warren seems to open a music folder in front of him, squints and focuses to look at the set list and, unless my eyes deceived me, grimaces and turns the page in s seeming frustration. He shows no emotion upon seeing the second page, then turns away. The first two songs are older, slower Dead songs, the second I think was Brown Eyed Women. During those two songs, Warren seems very agitated and distracted, an probably on;y plays for half the song. After BEW, Warren eases over to Phil and says something. Phil says something like, "okay, okay - you're right," with a big grin on his face. Warren then calls the "play" that he has audibled to Jimmy, Rob and John. And in the next instant, we hear those familar chords for "And It Stoned Me". And Warren is suddenly fully engaged, focused and everything but distracted!! He belts and wails the words to this tune, and as it wraps up, consutls with Phil again, who seems to once again agree with Warren. From there, they launch right into Soulshine!!! And just kick the shit out of it. After another Dead tune, the lights shift and its clear that Dickey Betts is coming out. Out he comes with that gorgeous, burnt orange Les Paul, and his white 10 gallon cownoy hat. Dickey hits those opening chords for Franklins' Tower, which all ABB fans knows to mean that Blue Skies are about to appear. WAren, Dickey and Jimmy set up a pretty mean set of jams, and then seem ready to let the tune go. But Mr. Dickey Betts would have none of that. He stepped out front of all the band members and rips a riff while looking stright at Warren, and lifts his head as he does so, as if to say to Warren, "come on!'. Diceky repeated this "baiting" behvior several times, and Warren stepped out fropnt with Dickey, looking as close to intimidated or uncomfortable as I have ever Warren. He watches Dickey string out a set of note, then focuses down on his fingers and freboard, and suddenly seems very at ease, And Warren responds to Dickey with his own soulful, yet blistering solo. They trade mentor and former mentee lickes as absolute peers, illustrating, as I saw it, complete respect, admiration and love for one another. Warren and Dickey were as locked as anytime I have ever seen them locked during their ABB days. It was absolutely over the top.

And for PHil and Friends, it just got better from there, An extremely energetic and soulful show. Warren and Jimmy lift one another to higher planes, and in the process, lift everyone in their circle.

And the road goes on forever......

Aloha!!!

Saturday was a great day alright. Only got to catch the last ten minutes of Dickey's band, but they sounded nice and Dickey looked pretty happy.

Next came Ratdog. Bobby, sporting his new grey beard, led the band through a marvelous set of tunes that I can best describe as smooth. Thats actually a pretty fair description of the Ratdog sound. This was the first time I had a chance to see these cats and let me tell you, there stuff is really hot. I'll definitely be checking them out on a two set night next time they're here in Atlanta. With much more of a jazz feel they can really go *out there*, which I really appreciate. The combination of Rob's slacky stand up bass lines, Bob's endless supply of cool vamps and Karan's clean and crisp modal runs, ala Garcia, Ratdog is a band with it's own sound that delivers arrangments of classic dead tunes that are real pleasers for this here old head. Really psychadelic and spacey. I loved it.

Last and certainly not least was our good buddy Phil and his merry band of musical friends. As you've seen in previous posts the set list was a real gem. It was great to get the show going with an old classic like 'till the morning comes and the whole band seemed inspired by Ratdog's jazzy space jams and the eagerness of the Atlanta crowd. The jams seemed more focused and I was glad to see Jimmy taking on most of the leads. I'm rather partial to the cleaner, less distorted sound of a strat so I love the nights where Jimmy takes the lead. I've heard rumors that this may be one of the last tours with Warren Haynes aboard and from what I saw last night, I might have to agree. As I said, Jimmy took most of the leads and Warren only sang lead on three tunes all night. As great a vocalist and guitar player as he is, I think he doesn't always see eye to eye with Phil and he may be getting anxious to continue on with Gov't Mule on more of a full time basis. If indeed this is the case, that would explain why Jimmy was playing more of the leads and why Warren sang so few tunes. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Anyway, wonderful show and a great night. I wish I could drive to West Palm today. As usual though, damned responsibilites are gonna step in the way of my good time.

Thank goodness for memories of last night.

Take it easy ya'll

--Scott

To the best of my knowledge, which doesn't say much, Warren's set list is taped to the floor.

not to discount your observations but just throwing it out there that sometimes we fill in the gaps of what we see with what we think is plausible....

Believe me you, I know I do it, otherwise how do you explain why I was on the rooftop of my hotel that night....

"One man's _________, is another man's __________. If I was in a true position to review, I would. But, since I only heard the show via cellphone, I cannot. The jams blew me away, I found it to be the third "Warren" night in a row, in many ways, and JIMMY rocks. But I said that two years ago.

This band is a sum of its parts. Equal distribution.

I wouldn't read too much into Jimmy taking more leads or the number of Warren songs.

Look at Raleigh, which was Warren Central.

Brief snippets from Atlanta. Near the end of Dickey's set, Herring and Barraco were on the side of the stage grooving pretty hard. When was the last time that Ratdog played a set without any Ratdog songs. Probably one of the oldest sets Bob has ever played with Ratdog, with the youngest song being Terrapin Station. And you always have to love two cuts from White Album in a set. I was also surprised that Phil only played two cuts from the new album. During the set they seemed (Phil and Jimmy) to keep motioning for someone off stage to join them. Perhaps it was Dickey (who did come out), or possibly Bobby. I guess we'll never know. The music was just incredible all night, with personal highlights being Jessica in Dickey's set, the slow jam leading into and first equally slow verses of Sugar Magnolia (which picked up speed as the song progressed), Birdsong, Terrapin Station, Dear Prudence, Til The Morning Comes, Phil's first jam (which had Warren playing some interesting Sugar MAgnolia themes), Brown-Eyed Women, Soulshine (hot to death), and the second set as a whole. One last bit, there was an Eleven tease before Uncle John's. Get copies of this show...

OK, wow...wow...wow Saturday was awesome. I'm just gonna say I was so happy I parked in the paved lot!!! Got there a bit before Dickey played, but stayed in the lots during his set which was fine by me BEACUSE - Warren played a short acoutic set outside in the parking lot in between Dickey and Ratdog. I had a free pair of tickets waiting at will call, so I figured I would pick them up and miracle someone before heading in. I get the tickets and hear an acoustic guitar warming up what sounds like the beginning of Patchwork Quilt. I turn around and see a blue van with Govt. Mule Deep End graphics all over it, a table set up in front of it and 2 PA speakers. Sure enough, there was Warren to give us a big taste of what was to come. Only about 20 people were standing there when he started which eventually grew to about 150 or so by the time his 3 songs were finished. All I can say is AMAZING....
His short acopustic set went::

Patchwork Quilt
And it Stoned Me
Soulshine

The latter 2 songs ending up in the Phil & Friends first set.

I hope some other zoners were able to catch this really special little gem.

In lieu of an entire review of the Phil set, I just want to comment on The Wheel. I don't think I've heard P&F play this one played with so much energy. This was definitely not the slow methodical wheel that I've gotten used to. The jam leading into it was blistering with the tempo and rhythm of a really hot Rider. Could be that this is the only second set Wheel that I've seen, but I definitely prefer the up-tempo arrangement.

yeah, yeah. last night was a jimmy night guys. i've never seen him so on fire. maybe because he played in his hometown. and did anyone else hear the rift on the loudspeakers for take me out to the ball game when jimmy was introduced? i had section 103, way on the left of the stage. went in when the doors opened, and sat about 17th row dfc in the fob section. where were the people with these seats? my brother & i had 4 seats! in the middle! great view of the stage, & the sweet spot for sound. dickey & great southern put on a great set. last time i saw them, they got a little cheesy, but they skipped that last night. ratdog was great. probably the best time i've seen them. that little red rooster blew the house down. and phil & his friends just burned it down. so much better than the last time they played at lakewood. i liked the setlist last night. i was also surprised that they didn't play more off the album, but i won't complain.

Did anyone notice that they started(teased?) Not Fade Away before going into Blue Sky. Was Dicky not up to Not Fade Away or what?
Fantastic show! Looved the Uncle John's Band!

Back home from Raleigh, Charlotte, and Atlanta and caught up on sleep. A few Atlanta observations from Row J Section 102. Starting off with Til the Morning Comes it seemed like it would be an excellent show. Warren was distracted for the first couple of tunes - it seemed like he was hot (he needs a fan like Phil!) - but he settled down soon enough. The cumberland blues jam was insane - warren and jimmy trading high speed licks back and forth with some amazing moments of synchronicity and phil grinning and shaking his head in (dis)belief - the band building up to the point of dissonant chaos and then bringing it all back together. It may have been the jam highlight of the show but there were many other nice moments.
Dicky Betts came out for Blue Sky (with a Franklin lead-in)in the second set. While warren was soloing Dicky was showing Jimmy the ascending chord inversions that he uses behind the solo. Jimmy nodded and did something similar with Dicky watching but soon went back to how he was used to playing it. Dicky seemed much more at ease and played with more confidence than when he sat in at the Charlotte show. Atlanta does love their Allmans, current and former, and they showed it. The Real Thing seemed like a low key encore choice and it was great when they rolled into Scarlet Begonias. As they started to jam out a bit Warren kept glancing at the clock. Phil knew what time it was and they brought it to an end just in time for the 11 curfew. The 2nd set was just about 2 full hours. (They stopped at 10:45 in Charlotte.) All 3 nights were great - it would be hard for me to pick an obvious best.

>>>>>>>where were the people with these seats?

Probably sitting in someone elses seats cause when they got to theirs someone was sitting in them.

I have stood in the aisle for a whole show becuase someone was in my seat. If I get hassled I tell the usher to get the person out of my seat.

Hey - I was in my seat! (Row J) There were a LOT of people "borrowing" seats, though, and it's a distraction with all of that shuffling around. Lakewood security was as laid back (once you got in) as I've ever seen it. They have always kept the aisles clear before when I've been there.

Who was the beach-ball-biter in about the 7th row? I counted 5 that he bit a chunk out of! And he's right, beach balls are for the beach - another distraction and not cool around the taper's microphones.

Hey all,
What a fantastic show. I was 4th row dead center.
I'll add to the posts already, One highlight had to be Dan Toler. That boy flat rocks! Jimmy was really digging Dan, and there was a little exchange between Dan and Jimmy! sort of a Hey Jimmy I can do this! Very good stuff. Dickey seemed a little off during his set. Not the case When he played with Bob. Killer jamz there.

Rat dog was very good, an excellent set, killer jamz.

It was interesting seeing Bob do Terrapin! I do miss Jerry:) Bob did a very respectable job though! The Jack Straw was great!!

As for the Phil sets, Awesome doesn't really describe that show. Really awesome comes closer.
Rob was on a roll, and sounded fantastic! Jimmy's sound was right in front, and he ripped it up. Strange how someone who plays that well, is still yet so reserved. At one point Phil was obviously encouraging Jimmy to let it rip. And he did!

As for Warren, Hey Warren is Warren he put in a very consistant show.

Phil was all grins, all night! and for good reason. the band was hot, hotter than Atlanta!

P.S.
For those of you who know Jammman, Most of his postings were done on my computer using my handle. So I'm a different person, the real Jammman! This is actually my 1st. post not counting some B&P things
Peace,
Jammman

I just wanted to say that this show was absolutely incredible. I cannot find the words to describe the feelings that I felt! I was very impressed with Bob and RatDog, and stoked to hear such a great set!

A few words about the seating problem....I was in section 102, Row D, and I had seat number 25, and my friend who was with me had seat #26...however, the seats on that row and section stopped at #25..so we talked to the security guys and they looked at the seat numbers, and figured that somewhere along the line, the numbers were messed up...because the seats in front of us skipped from 23 to 26 and then backwards...at any rate, it wasn't too much of a problem, and the people sitting next to us were cool, so we just all kinda took turns standing in the aisle, and security was cool about it.

I don't think I could've asked for a better time, or a better show.....unless my boyfriend could've been there with me...oh well....next time.

That was my first phil show and it was amazing. But did anyone hear warren play that "What if God was one of us" riff during a jam late in the second set. I was wondering if this was out of the ordinary because after I caught warrens acoustic set at the mule van, I walked over after he had signed all the autographs and was pulling out, asked if i could shake his hand, he said sure, stopped the golf cart. I got to shake his hand and i told him "god bless you man, you are my hero." He said thanks alot and then got on his way. I dont know if im looking to much into this or not. No matter what though warren seems like he is the most humblest rock star ive ever seen.

Hey Dew, Norwegian Wood teased strong out of Midnight Hour...

Must have been for Carol, since she couldn't make any of these shows...

Had a great time! Thanks Phred! Always good to see old phriends again.

Daydream, hope you made it back to Carolina safely, let us know when you get in...

Zen, I can understand why you didn't come back to stay, but was hoping to get a chance to chat a bit more. Maybe next time?

As for what was played, you won't hear me complaining about repeated songs or not what I wanted to hear. Its all good!

Venue security were good about trying to keep aisles clear until Phil's 2nd set, then it was anything goes!

Dickey's set was Hot and blew away the Allman Bros. sets I saw earlier this summer. IMHO

Putting on flame retardent suit now! ;-)

"Broken Arrow" is a Robbie Robertson (the BAND) tune from his 1987 self-titled album. Rod Stewart covered it.

Broken Arrow is actually a Robbie Robertson (The Band) song from his self-titled 1987 Album. Phil has been covering this song since the 90s with the Dead and yes, Rod Stewart also does a cover.
My favorite Phil and Friends version of this great song is with the String Cheese boys from august of 99. sorry don't have the exact date, but it is definitely one to listen to.

This show was friggin Awesome, best Phil show in Atlanta by far, and in my opinion, better than the previous night in Charlotte, though , atl is my hometown and I am biased.
The playing was coherent and limber yet could stop on a dime, it reminded me of the spring 01 shows like charlotte and orlando. A glorious night in atlanta, w/ a killer setlist and excellent execution. HIghlights, till the morning comes-broken arrow-brown eyed women, the meltdown jam into cumberland w/ a raging casey jones. The second set was great, w/ a resounding celebration opener that felt really good, and a huge Uncle Johns w/ some ripping leads that caught many off guard w/ a slightly altered time signature. Blue Sky was killer, quite a classy move by Phil & Co. for Dickey. The wheel started off at a very muscular pace and led into pure bliss...
My favorite Complete PHil show since the Kaiser and I was in Colorado for the spring 02 run and new orleans....cant wait for red rocks

Hey folks, here is my review I posted on RMGD. I shoulda also mentioned the mystery as to why Weir didnt come out and jam with Phil but forgot when I first wrote this. Anyway, I hope yall enjoy:

Got a chance to see Phil & Ratdog (along with Dickey Betts & Great
Southern) at Lakewood this past Saturday and figured Id share my
thoughts. First off, it was hot as Hades out in the lot during the
day and we got there a little later than we hoped due to some tardy
friends. We missed a lot of Dickey's set but could hear Jessica and
Ramblin' Man from the gravel lot on the right side (when looking at
stage) of the amphitheater. Sounded pretty good and his soloing was
right-on even with the not-so-great acoustics outside the place.
Soon, we headed on in after meeting some more friends. This was
during Ratdog's set. Here's what I thought.

Bob's band played very well. We came in during a strong Terrapin.
Seem to remember them going into drums/bass after that with DJ Logic
in tow. Logic did his usual scratching bit which added very little to
the music. I assume he was playing during the other parts of the show
but was just not as noticeable. Here he was more than evident and it
just doesnt do anything for me - sounds kinda hokey actually (as if
trying in vain to be hip with the raver kids). The Dear Prudence that
followed sounded a lot like the Mind Left Body Jam when it started but
was well-sung by Weir. Birdsong was interesting as it is basically
re-arranged from the Dead's version. Still, it was probably the best
thing I heard from Ratdog that day. The Sunshine Daydream was another
treat (Bob was singing the "never gonna fade away" lyric like he was
at Bonnaroo) and One More Saturday Night was the obvious set-closer.
Altogether, I liked the music a good deal but could do without the
DJ-ing. Only puts one more annoying cook in an already crowded
kitchen.

After a short break, Phil and his Friends came out to play. They
opened with their usual sublime jazz jam which set the right tone for
the night. Soon this fell into Till The Morning Comes which was quite
the surprise opener. Still, they added a great treatment to another
rarely-done Dead tune (much like they do to Golden Road or Masons
Children). Next came another fine jam which found its way into Broken
Arrow. I like this tune a lot and think its one of Phil's better
vocal moments (which, to be honest, there arent many of). I seem to
remember there being a MAJOR Know You Rider tease in the jam that
followed this song (though it couldve been during the jam into Broken
Arrow too). Brown-Eyed Women was another fine Dead chestnut that got
everyone hopping. After it ended the guys took a breather and then
Warren belted out a fine And It Stoned Me. I laid back on the lush
grass near the back of the lawn and just enjoyed the dying heat from
the day (it was finally getting normal temperature-wise). My
umpteenth Soulshine was next and it was decent though Ive seen it so
many times Im about to grant it "get a beer & hit the john" status.
However, Im glad I stayed to hear the excellent jam out of it and into
a great Cumberland Blues. I really like how they play this
Workingman's Dead tune as well as its partner Casey Jones. This one
was a rousing set-closer that got the whole place singing along. All
in all, a good set of mostly Europe '72-like Dead material that worked
well to these ears.

After a very pretty pink sunset, the band came out for round two.
This time they opened the set straight-up with a anthem-like
Celebration. This song has good lyrics but seems to disjointed near
the end with all the "Speak it from..." lines (they seem to get lost
in the translation after a while....they go by too fast to really hear
them). Anyway, there was another great jam after this which led to a
fine Uncle John's Band. Some people dont like the quick-tempo
"calypso" arrangement of the beginning and jam section of this tune
but I think it adds a lot of energy to what was (at times) a noodling
mess of botched lyrics when the Dead performed it. The outro "Middle
Eastern"-sounding jam was another fine opportunity for Warren and
Jimmy to mesh and spin a complex web of notes wrapping the listener.
After UJB, Phil invited Dickey Betts out to play a song. They started
the rhythm and beginning of Franklin's (which I seem to remember the
ABB covering a few years ago) but then Dickey hit the opening lick to
Blue Sky and they were off. Lots of fine Southern guitar playing
throughout this classic Dickey (OK, Allmans) tune. The jam was
decently done and they even hit the oh-so-familiar ending appregio
part in somewhat good unison with their guitars. After Dickey got
done, the band started a nice soaring jam with obvious Wheel
overtones. Unlike the similar jam at Bonnaroo, this time they
actually sang the song fully. The jam afterwards was more sublime
Americana
playing which warmed this Head's heart greatly. Such a pretty melodic
bed to play out of - this really is one of Jerry's better tunes. It
was near the end of this jam that a friend offered me his 20th row
ticket to go down front
(he had left at the set break to hang out with us for the 2nd set). I
couldnt resist and took him up on his offer.

I got down front (and I mean DOWN FRONT - I was basically in the front
row off on Rob Barraco's side) near the end of this great outro Wheel
jam. Just as I started getting comfortable checking out what all the
guys were playing (never noticed how much Jimmy plays the pedal -
kinda like Houser in WSP), Warren hits that classic opening lick to
St. Stephen. We all went nuts (as usual) and the band kicked into the
raunchy, loopy rhythm of the tune. There was one funny moment where
Phil just spaced the lyrics completely...so he just steps back and
gives Warren a look and they go right back into the jam. Then the
laughing and smiling Phil remembered the lyrics so they were back in
step again. The jam after this tune had some very cool parts that
seemed very well rehearsed and even somewhat familiar, though I
couldnt name it. After a while they started playing the almost
"waltzy" Eleven which got everyone smiling. Man, they really nail
this complex 11-beat pattern. Very, very cool! As the Eleven
dissolved into a gorgeous, quiet space segment, I must admit that I
had this strong vibe come over me.......Dark Star. I could even smell
it. Never mind that it was a good hour or so already into the set and
probably way too late to start such a filling tune requiring some
development. The band got quieter and quieter....Jimmy playing little
runs on his axe.....Warren emitting little sliding lines not unlike
seagulls.....Molo playing soft splashes on his cymbals.....to me the
time was right. They found themselves in that silence between two
worlds and then my lame ass just bellows "Dark Star" and Warren
(who was looking right at Jimmy) suddenly got startled and looked out
at us for a quick second. Then Phil broke the tension and started
playing a little bluesy line which Warren picked up on and they were
off into Midnight Hour.
Yeah, I do feel like a bit of an ass for yelling at such a pristine
moment (well, at least it wasnt "JERRY!!!" during the quiet part in
Stella Blue) but the ole Star just seemed so right at that time (and
the tape should prove
me out here). This Midnight Hour had a another cool Space segment in
the middle (which I didnt yell "DARK STAR!!" at) and finished up quite
nicely.

The band took a few minutes before returning to the stage. Phil did
his usual organ-donor rap and even a little bit of promo work for
their show in "West Miami" the following night (well, more like West
Palm Beach but close enough
Phil). Then Warren sang a VERY heavy song called The Real Thing that
brought silence to nearly everyone around me. The lyrics to this song
echo Jerry and Allen Woody in the most powerful way. And there's one
moment where the band
goes from a full roar to near silence in wink of an eye which reminded
me a lot of how Jerry used to do his ballads. I was VERY impressed
with this song. Near the end of it I saw Phil gesturing to an older
guy backstage who brought
him a lyric sheet. Scarlet was its name and the guys really had some
fun with this last-minute number. While the 11:00PM curfew prevented
a segue into Fire or some other tune, this fun song was played to the
hilt and very enjoyable.

[continued from last message]

We headed out the door and went over to the Shakedown happening on the
other side of the "drug bridge" as its affectionately called (and yes,
you could get just about anything there). While walking along I found
the guy who makes the french bread pizzas that I raved about in the
"Best Lot Food" thread on this ng last week or so. His name is
Michael and he had the 3 varieties kicking just fine Saturday night -
cheese, pepperoni, and veggie. I got a cheese and chatted him up for
a while. He got a laugh out of me posting about him and appreciated
me doing some marketing work (he says he goes to just about every jam
show in the South - be on the lookout folks! Great pizza!). After
some chow, we headed back over to our parking lot and found a
sickening scene....

Nitrous.

And not just a tank or two. More like 10 going in different cars
filling the air with their annoying "PSSSSHHHHHTT!!!" sound. This was
all in ONE lot folks. To make matters worse, one of these parasites
had set up shop between his SUV and the back of my friend Jesse's
truck (same ride I came in). Jesse says "dont sell that shit behind
my truck" to which this vulture responds "I sell my shit wherever I
want". We gave him 5 minutes to stop and then Jesse just moved his
truck to a new spot, leaving the asshole exposed to anyone walking
down the aisle. He did a little bit more "business" (at times just
leaving the damn tank valve running constantly) until it froze over
and
he put it in the back of his SUV. Musta made a killing though in just
the 1/2 hour we hung out there. These people (and their zombified
customers) suck and I dont remember seeing as many tanks at one show
in quite a while (since the Dead daze of the early-90s at least). Oh
well.

Overall, this Phil show was quality. The sound was excellent both on
the lawn and up close. Lights were their usual excellence (thanks
Candace!). The crowd was into it for the most part though I did see
the ubiquitous babblers which seem to be a part of every show
nowadays. I hope they come back for the Phall but will be just as
happy with another Other Ones reunion. Thanks Phil and the guys for a
great Saturday night.
