It was a smoken show. Very Very Hot Outside... must cool my brains before I can really comment.

I hate to admit this but, there were times at the show tonight that I was thinking I can wait to hear this in my air conditioned home...

As the old saying goes some the best shows are mid week one off's...

My wife and I saw the Phil shows at the Fillmore in Denver in 2000. I think it was 2000. After the first night she made a sign that said "Play I am the Walrus!" She even brought it in. We were essentially front row. She never held up the sign. Phil broke it out for the first time a couple months later. Those were two smoking Phil shows. Last night looks sweet. Sets like this are a big reason I like Phil shows so much. Viola Lee! Come on! Wrote a letter and mailed it in the air! Indeed!

What an incredible day!

Started off with the Luncheon with Phil in a room downstairs from the IMAX Theatre at the KC Zoo. The zoo is right next door to the venue on the grounds of Swope Park, which is a public park.

It was a real treat to be one of fifty people to talk and joke with Phil while having some lunch and learning more about organ donation. There were four other transplant recipients there, and the highlight was definitely when they all posed with Phil for a pic. Phil suggested they all display their scars, and a minute later five grown men were exposing their chests and stomachs with flashes popping and people clapping and cheering for them.

My buddy and I managed to fill out our organ donor info on the back of our driver's licenses and asked Phil to sign as our witness. YES!!!

Our ticket to the luncheon also got us into the soundcheck where they worked through Walrus and Peaceful Valley. After seeing Joan at soundcheck, this married man was glad she didn't show up at the luncheon because DAMN if she ain't sexy and hot with a primal voice that would rival any siren's song.

I'll let someone else go blow-by-blow with the show review. There was a Q & A session with Phil at the luncheon that was very entertaining. I asked for Phil's thoughts on playing with Warren Haynes since I'm a big ABB/Mule fan. Phil gushed that Warren has a tone that's so thick and dirty and raw that you could walk across the ocean on it. LOL

Anyway, hope I haven't rambled too long.

WOW

Fuckin' sick show

What can I say???

very nice, very fine indeedy :-)
Phil busted it out and he & the rest of his crew were smokin hot on the hottest day of the summer yet(109 in Lawrence, about 105 in KC- YIKES!!!)~ 2nd set especially rocked :-)

more to come, on little sleep, my mind is still spinning from it all, still need to digest what was handed to me last night, grate song selection, the heavy jams in the 2nd set is the kind of shit that I live to hear live

killer seats,
grate friends all around,
hanging with zoners on my *zonerversary*,
what more could a woman ask for,
except maybe
MORE PHIL- lol

God Damn I LOVE YOU PHIL
he even thanked us fans and called us hardcore for listening to him play in the god foresaken heat :-)

I am so grateful for the experiences that Phil has provided for me throughout the years with GD and beyond.........

at one point, during Terrapin, I WAS the music, Phil and the band moved through my core and the energy that we shared can't even be put into words......

pure
magic

after the show I somehow managed to get in the bathrooms that lead to the backstage,
was on my way out of the area to meet up with Bruce & my band of crazies,
but then while I was still inside the ahllway, I saw people getting checked off of a list and running through the halls high-5ing eachother, little did I know that Phil was in the next room waiting to say hey

so I promptly turned around and started heading down the hall til a security guard stopped me, damn, what would I say anyway?

Thank you Phil for all the positive vibes and music and people that I now have in my life because of YOU and my willingness to be open to it all

I would loved to have given him a BIG HUG and just say Thank YOU for being YOU

He certainly would not have wanted a hug from me at that point, I was pure sweat from dancing, I was a primal energy force that embraced the music and energy and in return had an experience that I will hold close to my heart for all my daze..............

man, I must still be high from it all b/c I am in tears as I write this!!!

grate pics, btw, one of our very own zoners and a AWESOME friend of mine~ WALSTIB is in 2 of the pics, hanging with Phil, even though I was unable to meet Phil, I am so glad that WALSTIB did

here are the pics that Bruce took from the front row during the 1st set:

More to come later, but for now I leave you with this~

*~*~*~*MAGIC HAPPENS*~*~*~*~*

I saw it first hand last night

peace
love
& many, many, many more Phil BOMBS for all :-)

Your higness,
I was right behind you and your friend in the third row DEAD center. What awesome music, friends, seats, sights, sounds and sooooo much more. I was happy to see you guys raging in the front row. You even had plenty of room to dance. I feel the same as you do when it comes to everything about our community. We need to continue to take it further, one way or another.
Can't wait to see what Phil has in store for the fall.

It does not look like the hottest set of the tour but that is obviously subjective. Must have been fun- the reviews are great. The setlist actually looks a little weak but the show was obvioulsy special based on the reviews.

How big was the venue...?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By unca (Uncle_in_kc) on Thursday, July 20, 2006 - 05:07 pm: Edit Post

I become one with the band, too, but during Caution when Joan was preaching it. Love how the song changes with a feminine voice bringing the vocals to life.

One part of the luncheon that was just downright hilarious, to me at least, was when somebody asked Phil how he feels about people going on internet message boards to inact a smear campaign against people who tape outside the taping section.

Phil had to repeat the question back to make sure he heard him right, paused, then leaned forward with the mic in his hand and a devilish gleam in his eye and answered in that deep, "scary" Phil voice, "They should be drawn and quartered. And I wanna watch!"

Man, you can't say up on this site without someone saying down.

Unboken opener, only the second Caution of the tour sandwiched into a jam filled Viola, only Walrus of the tour followed by what by all accounts was a gigantic Terrapin into Midnight Hour. It's a candidate.

As many before me have stated this was an unbeleivable day from start to finish. I was lucky enough to attend the luncheon as well and got to meet Phil and take a picture with him, very cool stuff! The show itself was incredible - the jam during Pride was something special in my pionion as was the smokin' Terrapin. I got my favourite in Stagger Lee and overall I thought it was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Thanks to all the cool people I met in Kansas City and most of all thanks to Phil for still bringin it!!

Sorry for the late review. I was too tired and blown away at 3 a.m. when I got home the other night to write anything and I had to get up the next morning and work 11 hours and then another 12 today but I skipped the bar tonight after work and and came home. I have to work another 12 hours tomorrow so this is all the time I got until Sunday...I'm still reeling from the day I had on Wednesday but i'll try to lay it down for ya now...

After learning about the Phil luncheon on Tuesday I frantically called my buddy in Oklahoma and gave him the skinny. "Wanna have lunch with Phil, Dude?" He said that it sounded really cool but he didn't think that he was going to be able to make it to K.C. in time to get to go and I don't have a credit card so I could not order myself a ticket. I was pretty bummed and groveled here and there to see if someone could pick me up a ticket and I would gladly pay them for it when I got there...About two hours later my buddy called me back and informed me that he WOULD be able to make it and that he WAS going to purchase the tickets...He basically siad that if we didn't go that we'd be soory and I agreed with him...SWEET! We were all set!!!

I could barely sleep the night before not really knowing what lay in store the next day but I just knew it was going to be a special day...I pretty much had to drink and smoke myself to sleep and I awoke the next morning just as excited as I was the night before. You know, the kind of excitement that you have when you are anticipating going to a show that you just know is gonna be a good one...well the day was here and it was time to pack the car up and go...One the way out of town I stopped at Walgreens to get a disposable camera in hope that I would get to take a pic with Phil. I ended up getting this little shitty mini digital camera (not disposable) for ten bucks. It's a piece of shit and about half the size of a pack of smoke but it came complete with a USB cable so I thought "what the hell" i'll give it a shot and see what happens.

I head out of town and started hauling ass for Kansas City. I had the AC cranked as well as The Good Ole Grateful dead in my cassette player all the while dodging idiots ( I almost got ran off the road three times on my was up there) and not only that I almost took out an Amish dude who just about lost control of his horse and came into my lane! That was scary! I finally got to the lot of the Starlight at about 2:15, about ten minutes after my buddy arrived and I called him up to see where he was at and he told me that he was at will call waitng for the office to open so I drove up there to meet him and get our luncheon tickets. We were the first ones there so we just hung out for a bit and waited and GODDAMN it was HOT out there!!!!!!!

At the beginning it seemed that the thing was a little unorganized...None of the Starlight people seemed to know what the hell we were talking about. Other people started to show up and ask questions.."Where do we get our tickets?" "Dunno, we're just waiting too." About 15 minutes later Bob Garret, one of the organizers showed up and told us just to "hang tight" and he would be back shortly with our ticket and info so we waited a few mor minutes and then this nice young lady came out carrying an envelope and started passing out our tickets and giving us the information on where to go. The luncheon was to be held inside the Zoo downstairs from the IMAX so me and my buddy go park the car close by and head on over. We walk inside and are blown away with some really nice AIR CONDITIONING!

Damn that felt good too, it was so freakin hot out there and it was nice to be inside for a while...I ran into WALSTIB in the lobby of the IMAX where we were eventually asked for our tickets and then escorted downstairs into a conference room all set up with food and tables with all kinds of organ donor information, pens, magnets, donor forms etc. etc. so we grabbed a table in the middle close to the front where there was a table set up with a mic on a stand in front of it that was obviously where Phil was to hang out. There were lots of nice folks attending the luncheon. I bet there were only about fifty people there and not near the hundred that were expected. It was nice and intimate...not too many but just enough.

So we sit there and bullshit for a while not really knowing what to expect. I opted to head over to the beverage area and grab some nice cold lemonade becasue at that point I was real damn thirsty and as I was walking over there down the stairs came a couple of people and behind them was THE MAN himself...PHIL!!!!!!!!! Of course he was greeted with cheers and applause!! "Hey Now Phil!!" I said and as I watched him walk by with a smile on his face and joyous stride I remember thinking to myself.."Damn, Phil's kinda short!" He always looks so tall up there on stage. I figured him to be about 6'3 but it doesn't matter, to me he's about a hundred feet tall...:-) I also thought to myself that he looks really damn good...healthy, happy and on a mission!

He immediately walked up to the mic and started jiving with us and after talking for a littlle bit he said something like " I really don't know what i'm supposed to do here and I don't know any stand up so what's the deal!?" or something like that. Then a guy behind him informed Phil that he was supposed to introduce him so he backed off from the mic and a local Dj got up there and cracked a joke or two and gave us the lowdown on what the luncheon was all about and what was to take place. he said that Phil would be signing autographs and taking pictures and that we would all have the oppurtunity to talk with Phil for a bit and that he would sign autographs for us and that a nice lunch of chicken florentine, rice and salad would be served and THEN he formally introduced the man of the hour...Mr. Phil Lesh.

So phil goes over to the table and sits down and some people headed up and got in line for the meet and greet and a few people chose to hang back and chill and eat first..We chose to hang back and grub first. I had not eaten all day and I was starving and was in no hurry to get up there and jump in the line although I was excited as hell to finally meet Phil. It was just cool as hell being there and being a part of it I was content so I grubbed! The food wasn't that great but I didn't care I ate up a plate and talked with my freind and the other guys at the table about previous shows on the tour, the closing of Alpine (which sounds like a pretty valid rumor) One guy seemd to know what he was talking about. he said that they were going to tear it down and build condos where it stood...bummer, but I guess we'll see what happens. After I finished I got out my shitty little camera that I bought and showed it to my buddy and told him that I hope that it takes decent pictures. I also saw that WALSTIB had a pretty nice digi cam and as I was rappin' with him I asked him if he would snap a pic for me and my friend in case my camera didn't come out and he nicely agreed..THANKS DUDE!!!!

Alright! It was time for me to get in the line! I was kinda nervous but not really. I don't get starstruck very easily but I will admit that I had some butterflies in my stomach. I mean c'mon I had waited along time for this day and I was super stoked! I see and read all the time on here and elsewhere about people's experiences meeting and talking to Phil and how grate of a guy he is in person and how he signed this and that for them yada yada but it was MY turn this time and I must say I was pretty dang giddy about it. It had already been a good day that just seemed to keep getting better and better as the minutes passed. I wasn't even sure if I was going to get to meet him. The description of the days events was pretty vague. I wanted to bring my copy of Searching For The Sound for him to sign but after all of the book signings I didn't think that he would be up for signing books so all I brought was the Fritz poster that another Zoner put together. I threw it in an envelope and stuck it in my backpack just in case the oppurtunity arose...I feel that I had a small part in that whole tribute thing that Phil did for Fritz back in December in Bahston so I figured it would be a nice addition to the tribute poster if I could get Phil's signature on it. I also pulled out my ticket to the show for him to sign as well and then I impatiently awaited my turn...

My turn came up and I walked up to the table and introduced myself and shook ole' Phil's hand and told him that I was very excited to finally meet him and that it had been a long time coming. I told him that I really enjoyed the show at The Ryman back in June and he said that he really loved playing in that place and that he was glad that he finally got to do it. I told him that I talked to him about playing there on a phone interview Q&A that he did about a year ago and was glad that he finally pulled it together and that it was a really awesome night...Then I pulled out the Fritz poster and told him that I doubt he would know who I was but that I was the guy that sent the email to Ruby requesting that he play Brokedown Palace for Fritz in Boston. He did remember and I finally got to thank him in person for myself and all of us here..I told him that it really meant a lot and that his thoughtfullness made the passing of our friend a little easier to bear...He signed the poster and my ticket stub for me and I sat down and wrapped my arm around him and posed for our photo op. I then told him that I loved him ("I LOVE YOU MAN!!") and thanks for the many years of joy and music that he has brought to me..."Keep on keepin on Phil! I told him and so that was that. Really cool stuff right there....

After the meet and greet we were informed that Phil would be taking questions for a little while. They prompted him to get up to the mic for the Q&A but he told them to just take the mic off the stand that he'd rather sit so they gave him the mic and he sat at the table for a good 45 minutes and took our questions. It was so laid back. I sat there and just soaked up every word. I'm not going to try to write down everything that was said but he got the typical questions about The Archive situation and if The Dead were going to tour again. He was asked about the passing of Vince and Ramrod, the closing of Alpine, the soundboards...One younger girl asked him what he thought about L.S.D. and he said "One word....I LOVE IT!" We all laughed and he went into it a little buit and said that he has nothing against it becasue he never had a bad trip. He then went on to answer so more questions..We were throwing them at him left and right He talked about his donor experience and about his sons bands and that how ChriS robinson gave them some good advice about not being in a band with your brother (HA ! HA!) that it was better to have two seperate bands...

The Q&A was typical stuff...nothing that he hasn't been asked before and will be asked again at some point I am sure. He talked about being on the road and how tired he was from time to time and that he spent most of his non-playing time in a sitting positon just chillin out getting ready for the next show and that although he was getting up there in years he had a new liver to keep him going and that he has no plans of stopping any time soon. He was asked how he likes playing with Warren and he basically said that Warren is THE MAN. He was also asked about future tours in which he basically said "Wouldn't you like to know!?" :-O We tried to get it out of him but he wasn't budging. it was all in good fun and we all knew it...even him. It was really mellow and laid back and Phil was a good sport and answered every question to the best of his ability...even the ones I could tell he was uncomfortable being asked about. Some people just don't know when the right time is to ask about something and can't tell that he probably doens;t want to be asked about certain shit but like I said he was a good sport about it. at some points I just wasnted to say outloud "Jesus! That horse id long dead but I refraind...I raised my hand finally and told said something to the effect of I know what it was like for me at The Ryman and that I had a great time and what how he felt playing in a place with as much history as it has...He said that it was a great experience and that he was honored to be there and that he and everyone else had a really goosd time that night.

So it went on for a while longer and then the host said that Phil would take one more question so I heard a guy behind ne say "Phil I got delayed on the road and I just got here would you mind signing one more thing?" to which Phil replied "Sure, Come on Up!" and that was about it...I remember that I had forgotten to as him to sign my donor card so I walked back up there behind the late guy and told Phil that I was so excited I forgot to have himjsign my donor card and he said "Sure Nate...i'd be happy to." I thought it was cool that he remembered my name after all of those people and all of those questions that had been fired at him...That made me feel pretty good. I thanked him again and shook his hand and told him that I hoped to talk with him again someday....

We were then informed that we could be able to attend the soundcheck at five thirty and that were awere all to meet at the gate and they would take us in. So we leave and go out to my car and drive it over to the ot and park next to my buddy's car. I immediately cracked open a beer...Damn was I ready for a COLD BEER at that point. it had already been a grate fucking day and knowing that it was going to get better just kepta permagrin on my face all afternoon....We hung out in the lot for a while and told our neighbors of our experience and about how cool Phil is and how gracious he is in person...I was still fucking starving and a couple of cars down there was a guy with a huge smoker smoking pulled pork, briskett and sausages so I went over and got a sandwich and chowed down some more before we were to head over to the soundcheck. We get inside the venue for soundcheck and we were told that we couldn't sit in the front section whic was shaded and you coul feel the AC coming from the stage...I don't know if I have said this yet or not but it was FREAKING HOT AS HELL!!!! Everyone basically just started saying "C'mon its hot let us sit in the shade!" and the chick that was telling us NO pretty much gave up and a big guy came down from the satge and informed her that it was ok to let us sit there in the shade. THANKS DUDE!!!!

Soundcheck was cool...They played Walrus and Peaceful valley and then Joan got on the drums for a bit and jammed out. It was nice being the only ones in the venue sitting there all alone up front with the band doing there thing and Phil warming up Big Brown for the feedback deal that was to come later in the night. Barry and Headband started fucking around trying to come up with the chase music to The Dukes OF Hazzard....It was funny. It was neat seeing them raw and not performing....The closest I have been to the band like that and I will now admist that Joan is pretty damn cute! So they finished up the soundcheck and Phil waved goodbye to us and we all hollered out our thanks and headed out of the venue back out into the heat and back to the lot..I was ready for anotha cold beer at that point...So far it had been a damn fine day and the concert hadn't even started yet!!!!! Thank You Phil for taking the time out of your busy schedule after driving all night to sit down and sign our stuff and take our questions and hang out for a while. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will take the memories of it with me forever. You are one helluva good guy and it was nice to finally meet you. There's not a kinder soul out there in your league and I am a lifelong phan and proud to be one...You truly are THE MAN! I Love ya Phil! :-)

Well, I started typing this a pretty good while ago and when I sat down I put in the soundboard from the show and at this point it's all the way up to Midnight Hour and that's my cue to get off this damn computer and get my ass to bed. I gotta be up in six hours for work and i'm beat. I just wanted to drop in and give you a little review of my day the other day...It sure was a good one. Hell I haven't even got to the show review yet!!!!! I',m also not going to bother to check my spelling or typing errors cause I don''t feel like it...I'll fill ya in on the show when I have the time on Sunday but for now I gotta crash! Goodnight...

Here's a couple of pics before I go:

>>>>>>> One part of the luncheon that was just downright hilarious, to me at least, was when somebody asked Phil how he feels about people going on internet message boards to inact a smear campaign against people who tape outside the taping section.

Can you describe this question-asker? If it is who I think it is (and I'm pretty sure I know), I'm almost certain they were referring to ME (and the "internet message board" being the good ole' Philzone) - and that is really funny because that's not what I did, but that IS what this person THINKS I did . . . anyhoo, another day, another drama . . .

>>>>>>> "scary" Phil voice, "They should be drawn and quartered. And I wanna watch!"

Now Phil wants to draw & quarter ME, guess I should feel downright honored and priviledged!
