Just down off the Mountain to New Paltz and replaying Phil's set in my head.

Warren and Sco had a lot of fun playing off of each other tonight. Sometimes they just set the table so nicely for Phil and Molo that the rhythm section just wound things UP for another round of jammin or brougfht a song home. Unbroken Chain was so tastey and inspired! and then Warren ripped the lid off with a blistering solo. The othe highlight has to be Lucy in the Sky for the Woodstaock crowd. Eyes of the World makes any show a keeper and Sco played some phasings early in the tune that displayed a new color of that familar song

Mud mud and more mud. Plus rain. plus beer.,. and still more mud.

One long windy road leads to the NYS Thruway from Hunter Mt and 100 cars will be goin as slow as that one half blind driver in that car in front of the line. We've all beeen that car one time or another.

May all who travel find their beds in safety

>>>Unbroken Chain was so tastey and inspired!

they moved through all the changes on this one and it was very, very well played...

>>>John Molo (Drums)

molo did backup vocals on NFA and was part of the vocal jam at the end; im not sure that i've seen him do that before...either way, molo was killing it last night!

well, PHIL PHIL PHIL

to say inspring and maybe the most interesting phil show I have witnessed esp first set,

The scene was awesome, people were kind as expected and the sound so pristine at times it reminded me of some amazing outdoor 80's shows where the sound was just so there

now the music, Sco using pair of voxs, with his two axes, startin the night with the greta black semi hollow that makes his trademark sound was great ,
the harsher, thinner tele sound was really cool and compared to other sets i have seen him play helped to distinguish his tone from Warrens, though he was tuning it alot in the weather, must have been harsh on the axe,

ahhh warren, was beaming to regroup with phil and molo and have a new and very unique player to mix with, Sco's wider jazz vocabulary brings a different synergy than some of the best of the other friends,
more on next page

SMOKIN'. only caught the webcast, but very nice treat from the comfort of my living room. I really hope Haynes and Scofield play more with Phil. This combo. may the best yet. Scofield had some real nice play during the EYES. Haynes was ripping it all night, UNBROKEN CHAIN and FIRE were both hot! Please Phil, give us a Haynes/Scofied tour. It hasn't sounded this good since Haynes/Herring and I really did Scofield. They all looked like they were having a blast.

molo, classic as and driven as usual and loving what he ws hearing often beaming while Phil turned to him to lead the transitions,

the keys were steady, some great but not overdone electronics that addes some great textures and spaces, really strong solo in eyes, seemexd to be having a blast with the material and the moment

Warren reaching deep in his range after playing so much amazing music not even counting the mule sets, he was just coming out with everyone and grinning and loving hosting us in what is now WARRENS HOUSE PERIOD, the name change should follow hehhehe

and PHIL, not only great to see my old brother,HE WAS on, and sang maybe the best I HAVE EVER heard, his high range, and sometimes droning kind of sound much more open and expressive
the Unbroken might have been the best i have ever seen, some of the bluesy jams in and out of the space, the spoonful tease in speedway and the great weird 2nd set jams

and the outro solos of althea as well as warren really sinking his teeth in to the vocals, I thought is was HIS strongest vocal moment of the night, moving graceful and really WARRENS vocals, brought back memories of great jerry moments without sounding like a cover version

thanks everybody see you next year, in the rain

lucy in the sky, with diamonds ahahahahahaha

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By The Dirty Little Herbert (Warrented) on Monday, June 04, 2007 - 11:53 am: Edit Post

Finally coming back to full consciousness while sitting here at my desk, after a full and amazing day of music, food, drink, rain, mud, people, and general merriment yesterday. The three hour drive back to CT from Hunter, NY was a trip to say the least, but as usual, we made it back alive ;)
Alot of great sets today, Robert Randolph as always full of energy, the North Mississippi Allstars not missing a beat, then Michael Franti taking us higher and higher and working the place into a frenzy. It was gonna take a big night from Phil and his Friends to keep up with the three sets that preceded them.
Boy did they step up.
It's inevitable that with Phil's rotating door policy of bringing in new friends all the time, that lineups will be compared and contrasted. What's also inevitable is that means this lineup was sure to be compared to the "Q," in no small part to Warren Haynes' undoubted influence on that band.
What I found interesting was during the set I found myself comparing the lineup more to the Haynes/Trucks lineup of November 1999 to that of the quintet. The jams were similar both in flow and execution, whereas instead of two leads going at once, it was more of a call and respnse with occasional interweaving between the two guitarists. Also, mostly due to Warren being out of the fold for so long, some songs had a tendency to start off a bit shaky, but really connect by the time the second verse or so came around.
Shakedown Street was the most mentioned opener in the section of the crowd I was standing, and lo and behold the boys delivered on queue with no hesitation. This version had a bit more improvisation in the center of the song than others by Phil, and Warren sung it well, as he always does. Interesting to note that John Molo sang backup vocals for a good deal of the show, and did a very credible job. I mean, he's obviously no Barraco, and I wouldn't bet on him taking any leads, but in a three part harmony he sounded wonderful.
Friend Of The Devil had a very laid back feel, not as driving as some recent versions. Steve Molitz, who for the most part played a very good show, kind of dropped the ball here on piano. FOTD screams for some sweet piano jamming, and while he was capable, I felt he left a bit on the table. The band segued well into Althea, which Warren nailed vocally, albeit while using lyric sheets (which by the way I'm fine with, if you haven't played the stuff in a while, no harm in getting it right). Good instrumental by Scofield here, but he was just getting warmed up.
A short pause and a bit of meandering led to and unbelievably intense Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. Scofield showed his new found rock prowess in delivering a very solid instrumental, weaving in and out with Warren's slide to make for a very memorable version, that segued into a standard, but tasty New Speedway Boogie.
Mason's Children was a rocker as always, Molo, Phil and Warren nailing the 3 part harmonies, and Phil throwing bombs all over the place. Phil sets such a high bar for himself, its hard to top what came before, but he was in incredible form last night, dancing around like a little kid and throwing out thick basslines and tasty fills all over the place.
Candyman came next, and some people have said it was the lowlight of the evening. It wasn't terrible, but it was an odd choice, given some other songs of similar idiom that Warren sing so well. Still, no harm no foui, and directly after we were treated to a massive Scarlet Begonias>Eyes Of The World>Fire On The Mountain. This was, to me, the highlight of the night. The band never let down as Scofield and Warren traded licks, then circled eachother, brought it back around, and then drove it home. Particular emphasis on the Eyes instrumentals, which were quite different and distinct from eachother, but beautiful in their own way. Yes, there was a bit of a trainwreck coming out of Scarlet, but Phil laughed it off and made something new of it like only he can.
A scant 5 minute break was on the card next, quelling speculation we were only getting one set tonight. Still, that first one clocked in at damn near 2 hours, and would have been enough for the wet, muddy, sunburnt masses.
Unbroken Chain got things restarted, and it was an epic version. One of the longest instrumentals I can remember hearing in an Unbroken, Scofield lifted the song higher and higher with each pass through the chord progression, with Molitz matching him on the keys.
It's appropriate here to mention why I believe Warren Haynes is Phil's most valuable friend, and why when he's involved the shows tend to be of the highest quality. Everybody knows that in order to play with Phil, you have to be a top notch musician, which Warren certainly is. What he brings along with that, though, is a top notch professionalism and a care that the music that's being made is of the highest quality, not just what he's playing. No other guitarist in Phil's arsenal plays as much dynamic and interesting rhythm guitar, nor vamps other players up like Warren does. He's an absolute master of sitting back, accenting others' playing, and saying his part when it comes his time. Unbroken Chain was the ultimate culmination of this. As Scofield, who will take the well deserved plaudits from this show, was going off on Unbroken, I found myself drawn to the work that Warren was putting in, accenting the high points, blending the lows, and really becoming part of the rhythm section with Molo and Phil. He helps form the backbone when he's not soloing better than anyone else Phil plays with. As any musician will tell you, you're only as good as the people you're playing with, and Warren makes people better.
So Unbroken ends with Warren's Pink Floydian solo, and comes to a complete stop, before the familiar Dark Star riff rips out to thunderous ovation. A bit of instrumental leads to the first verse, then a much more elaborate one follows, melting down, rebuilding, and melting again in a fusion of organized chaos, finally melting into Mountains Of The Moon, so often a set killer but tonight played with tightness and conviction like I haven't seen.
Back into Dark Star for the last verse, and one final meltdown which transforms into the singalong portion, with Lucy In The Sky the ethereal wonder it always is, and Lovelight blowing the lid off the joint with big solos from Scofield and Warren.
A short walk off, then back on, and Not Fade Away puts the well weathered crowd into a frenzy, with good instrumentals and a fun singalong to end what was a very successful night and show.
Phil Lesh is 67 years old. By any account, any man who's lived the life he has and done the things he's done would not be looked upon poorly at all for enjoying the retired life, living off the fat of his accomplishments, and writing the final chapter in his amazing life. That's never driven him, though, and he instead chooses to share his greatest passion with us on special nights like this. It's his youthful exuberance, energy, tempered with the wisdom of years that allows the music made by five men who've never played together at the same time before to flow without a hitch, and take us to spiritual places we always wonder if we'll ever return to. It's nights like last night that remind us why we travel the hours and miles, why we search the internet for rumors and ticket dates, and why we read and post on a message board like this to see a man and his friends play music. In the end, he makes it all worth it, and beyond that he makes us feel more than any artist that's he's doing it for us.
Thanks Phil, and thanks Warren for putting on a great event. Hope to see y'all next year.

Great Review from Warrented, thanks

Shakedown was a great opener.
Althea was great, i wasnt sure if they were gonona pick up steam at that point, or mellow out. The train kept rolling, and it got bigger and better all the way up the mountain. 3 mountain songs, some great Jerry songsand Phil singing wonderfully. Great set list. The sound system was loud and clear for the whole festival.

scarlet > eyes > fire. wow!
Unbroken Chain into Dark Star, just dreamy!
The Lovelight was a monster, one of the best.
Low Spark was heavy, it was all good, they topped off the festival with a great great show.
Tight and solid sounding with lots of great solos , good surprises and jams.

Warrented's review nails the show as tightly as Phil and Warren nailed the music. That said, ya really hadda be there on the Mountain for all three nights to get the full effect. It was one of those odd and very special nights when fatigue and exhaustion made the music even more compelling. Phil's show came at the end of three days of Mountain Jam, all of which were filled with truly great music -- four killer sets of Govt Mule over the first two nights, plus first rate performances from the New Orleans Social Club, Robert Randolph, Tea Leaf Green, New Monsoon, the N. Mississippi All Stars, RAQ and Umphrey's McGee), mud, rain, beer, more mud, more beer, and even mama bear grooving to the music! (Yes, there was a mama bear in residence; at least two campers captured her and at least two of her cubs on their cell phone cameras at various points over the weekend; maybe they'll post their photos on the web sometime soon).

Just before Phil came on stage just after 7:30PM rumors were circulating that there would only be one set (supposedly because of a 10PM curfew, and/or concern about Phil's health, and/or Warren's exhaustion after two nights of headlining the festival, and/or lack of rehearsal time -- pick your poison) By the end of what had to have been the longest first set in Phil and Friends history -- it finally clocked in at at just over two hours -- those rumors seemed more and more likely; when Phil announced at the end of the set that they'd be right back in 5-10 minutes with "much more music" you could practically hear the crowd exhale in joy.

Any concerns about the current state of Phil's health had pretty much disappeared after three and half hours of truly incredible music. Plus, Phil sang more at this show than I've ever heard him sing before: he sang lead vocals on five songs, and harmony leads with Warren on two others, plus harmonies and individual vocal lines throughout. Just an amazing show, and yes, the first since 2003 that is comparable to the glory days of the Q. Here's hoping this lineup performs again sometime soon!

Ok, I'm in a rush; have to go to my daughter's award banquet now, I'll try to report in detail later......

There was some very nice dual leads & serious interplay between Warren & Scofield, very similar to Warren & Jimmy in 200-2001, but better.

Was this show great?
At times, but the material chosen by Phil on the setlist often didn't give the band the BEST opportunity to reach their full potential.

However, the show WAS Very Good, no mistake & more details to come as chance allows - Mrs B is throwing me out the door to make the Awards ceremony.
After all, my daughter IS a senior going to Syracuse (Proud father).

Be back later.

It's almost like the days of old....Bucky reviews! Looking forward to it.

Enjoyed the webcast. Like to see that more often. Thought Scofield was great...seems to have alot more command of the material, after a year or so in the loop....

Warren(ted) mentioned something about particle dude "dropping the ball' on FOTD. I actually thought he did a decent job on that. Kind of made me look at him in a different light (esp after the shakedown). His simple approach on it impressed me. Then again, i'm pretty much only familar w/ his electric key work...

Probably the best show IVE seen, great vibes all around, magical ambience and the band was great.

Phil's bass wasnt just dropping bombs, it was raining thunder all night long, Molitz fit into the band wonderfully! adding so much texture to the songs, loved his contributions to " SPACE" :-)
Haynes seemed a little distant, and out of place mentally throughout the night to me, dont get me wrong, he sounded good because he is Warren Haynes, but being in the front row i noticed him missing ques from phil, and generally just staring down at the ground in an uninterested fashion that us dead heads know so much about from the latter years of Garcia's life. I hope everything is okay with him, as i said he sounded great, was just a little slow and unresponsive, Scofield was the hero of the night in my opinion. I was fortunate enough to see the last show previous that scofield played with this band in Asheville and its obvious that he really has found his space with these songs, his riffs seemed to be what i was listening to the most intently as the night progressed, Molo, good ole molo steady as a mule, always keeping us happy with that fat rhthym section.

There was a lot of magic tonight. from the bands obvious geographical song selection ( Fire on the mountain, speedway boogie, Mountains on the Moon) to the incredible vibes a long this mountain. At one point i looked behind me to see girls with streemers and masks pulling behind them a giant puppet all the way around the mountain, with a cool guy with a Grateful Dead flag standing 20 feet in the air behind them.

Lovelight was certaintly the highlight of the night for me, i couldnt contain a smile, and even a laugh at how joyous this music was, Molitz's energy was contageious, and the whole night Sco and Warren's interplay was tremendous.

All in all out of the 20 or so shows ive seen:
THIS WAS THE BEST :-)

WARNING:

Reading This Review May Cuase You To Hear The Truth Instead Of "Everything Was Great!"

...........So, I get in with my wife after meeting a few Zoners, including MikeW, who somehow ends ups back on the couch in my family room 250 miles away.

I had VERY fortunately taken a wheelchair, although the electric job we were just given doesn't fit in Key's car & I had totalled my van friday night when I took a snooze in the car (no ticket even).

So, Key & Mrs B. pushed me up the hill on pavement, then mud, onto a board, into a neat little Handicapped Section where we sat, about 50 feet from the stage, right in line with right speakers and I never moved becuase my wife woulda never got me back.
As it was, some kid about 20-25 helped her roll be down & out of the place.
Well, I had to pee by the time they wheeled me there, so by shows end, 4 hours later, I was ready to explode - world's best piss. :-)

The sound was just perfect., best I may have heard in 9 years of Post-Jerry GD shows. Really, crisp, fine seperation, good ajustment by each musician early on (and the reason for the sub-par FOTD instrumental as the Keys guy was spending most his intrumental turning down the volume too much & the adjuusting from there, etc).

Now, onto the show............

WARNING:

Reading This Review May Cuase You To Hear The Truth Instead Of "Everything Was Great!"

Out the band comes, things were still in chaos with Mini-Warren running around low in front of the band and another tech over by Scofield's stuff or the Keyboards literally as the band was tuning up.
Even after they started, each player had to set his sound, did so within a minute, and the most clear blend of sound was achieved.....

No, jam, just the smallest tinge of tuner up, and into Shakedown.
What a version. That longer (yet standard) instrumental began to take off, great 'question & answer' bewtween the two guitars. The jam out, as always, leaves Shakedown quick behind & FOTD fairly quickly ahead. This was a pretty standard version in the 8 years I've been seeng Phil, nothing to make it memorable.

Then, real short jamming &,
if Lost Sailor > Saint Of Circ is my Ying, then
Althea is my Yang.

I've seen Lost > Saint 37 times, Althea 46.
There's just a song you've heard too much to ever like & here's mine.

But, Althea had the usual plethora of short instrumental.
They start it, dual leads, it begins to tear up......
And ends.
What?
Is this Ratdog?
Well, they blew that one.

A short shimmer of space and there it is, Low Spark, Warren's obligatory song for tonight.
The first jam is OK, nothing great.
Will Warren sing 3 verese or poop out after 2 as he often did in 2002-2003?
No, it's 3, So, here we get the longer instrumental, and I'm pretty sure it was here, Warren starts the slide.
Scofiels follows it, but not just by playing his own riffs on top or with Warren, but by kinda scraping the pick (or finger) across the string to match Warren - Very cool.
Needless to say, the song finished in a flurry, heads off & then a big jam that is so much Cumberland Blues, I was waiting for them to start it.
But, alas, things slowed down, then several minites later, as if the band looked back at their lists, they picked it up, and...
WAM! Mason's Children.
WAM! You either know what I mean by that about Mason's Children or forget my explaining it. Power plus.
I thought the set might end here as I've seen P&F end a 1st with Mason's before (11-29-03).
Candyman - I woulda gone to pee if it wasn't for the wheelchair having to go uphill in the mud..................

Back to buisness.......

Funny, a previous reviewer called this segment the highlight of the night.
I found it a very contrived, not outstanding & wasteful of a half hour of valuable time which could have been used to really let loose on some serious jamming, like The Othe One, Saint Stephen > The Eleven or Viola or Help > Slip > Franklin's.

Ok, So, Scarlet starts.
I'm never a big Scarlet fan because it means Fire & I've seen enough Fires to where it's at the point I need to wear asbestos to shows.
Now I've seen a few good, long Scarlet Fires by Phil, but enough!

The Beginning instrumental during Scarlet was excellent & far beyond anything I've seen P&f do. Then, they head out with neary a 'Scarlet Coda' to be found.
A short 'nothing jam', then, they forced it into Scofield's obligatory Eyes, 2 nice instrumentals, again though, don't all P&F Eyes sound about like the next version & so on?
Out of Eyes, and, oh, there's Fire.
Again, just another version, heads out, and a few minutes later, we hit the 'Scarlet Coda' & Phil says they're taking a "5 minute break" that I'd given up on long before this 1:59-2:00 set ended.

See you next set......

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Bucky (Bucky) on Tuesday, June 05, 2007 - 06:44 am: Edit Post

2nd set........

TEN minutes later, the band was back - MUST be a record.

The fellow next to me, nice quiet fellow, Danny I think, he was wanting to hear Unbroken Chain, While I'm like 'Dark Star, Dark Star, Dark Star, blah, blah, blah.........."

So, the odd opening set Unbroken Chain of the also obligatory Warren Haynes tunes.
The guitars roared through a mid-song instrumental about likethe Q would, then a pretty weak keyboard/organ section, the vocals finished up & we get the big Warren instrumental that Phil added in 2001.
It seemed shorter, with Warren onto the double-time quicker, very intense, then he jams, some more, and a 2nd double-time, shorter than the first, but maybe faster, He jams on a bit more, Scofield stepping aside as Warren had done during most of Eyes. Then, I laugh aloud, because somebody played it.
Then the band stops.

Thats OK, I hear it again, over & over.
I turn to Danny next to me and say, "You like that?"
"Yeah"
"Me too." Using a line from the audience at Rocky Horror back when it first came out, I tell him," You got yours, now I'll get mine."

And the band breaks into the fastest paced Dark Star I've ever heard.......

It's a big swirling dark cloud cloud flying overhead at a tremendous speed. Each note cuts like a knife as 1969 becomes alive again and I'm carried away yet focused at the same time.
It's so handsome, please don't sing & ruin it........

I take my hands down from my ears after 4-5 minutes to rest my aching shoulders & as if I break the spell, Phil breaks into the Dark Star (DS) theme & sing verse 1 they do.
They start #2 instrumental, & I'm blessed that they don't lame out of DS immediately & 5 minutes later they're playing the next song.
Not here. The DS theme stayed a good while, pretty much doing some wonderful things at top speed. Was it here that Molo was doing the really interesting percussion as the band first loosened the DS theme, playing that down into a space of a few minutes, making the 1st DS verse 15-20 muinutes I guess.

Mountains of the Moon came up.
Funny, I've seen Phil play this song twice.
Once, in the middle of a 45 minute That's It For The Other One (4-23-00)
The other, in the middle of a half hour Dark Star.
A mellow song, I want intensity, yet Mountains somehow has some sweet riffs in the jams, then rolls out & jam starts, picks up & Scofield starts Truckin.
Page checking, Phil talks, pages flip, band becomes noticeably unfocused for 2-3 minutes before starting to space again before Phil authoritivly pulls things back to DS.

A jam out of DS, no 'Ba Boom Ba Boom', that quickly melted into the best space of the show, with things ending on a HUGE bass bomb that had China Doll written all over.
After a moment of teasing China Doll, sure Warren would sing it (Keyshawn wasn't he told me), & next thing you know, we got the obligatory Beatles song Warren always played - forgot that.
Then comes Lovelight.
Lovelight? Sets over? Yeah, 2 hour 1st set after all.
And what a Lovelight.
A Standard 1st instrumental, I was thinking ;I sure hope they do a 2nd one after that'.
The 2nd instrumental was classic.
Interplay & playing on top of each other (like the end of Whippin' Post) was simply scorching. Encore time and I told my neighbor, "Just give us a jammy encore, not one like Box of Rain or Brokedown. Maybe the Cumberland Blues they teased so much before, I've seen that before (11-30-03)"

Well, not anything as lofty as Cumby, but a rather impressiver Not Fade Away followed.
The 1st instruimental was rather long, Warren doing his 'Who Do You Love' fan out before & after the lyrics, then each took off before both cut loose together. Mighta been here where Warren was jamming & Scofield was foplling ghim by scraping the guitar string - one or the other.

The 2nd verse was just wild, taking a great jam that I thought was heading to GDTRFB.
Then they were sing the last verse of NFA, & it was all over........

Except for missing RT 84 off RT 87 &almost driving almost to NYC when we live near New Haven, CT.

Oh, I didn't read it, but I know I dforgot New Speedway Boogie.

I guess that says it all.

I've seen too many average versions played differenT ways.
This one was somewhat more upbeat than The Q, less than with Chris Robinson (my favorite 'cuz it rocked the most).

First space of the night starts.....

The drunks start talking.

I say "Shhhh1 This is going to be great."

The band IMMEDIATWELY breaks into New Speedway.

Everyone around me thinks I'm a genious, while I feel like a fool because I meant the space.

OK, NOW I xcan go to bed in peace.

Show, yes, well worth it.
Missing everyone I know like you & Sideshow, especially Matty & Cryp, Jill & Noel for my wife, physical conditions forced me to miss 'the Philzone Zombieland' I heard about.

>>>>>>Interesting review Bucky. On a scale of one to ten...how do you rate the show as a whole?

I guess 7-8.....

The potential for a ten was there - If Phil had let ME write the setlist.
There was just a few too many songs you couldn't get much out, of like Candyman, Lucy In The Sky, not much expansive material but Dark Star, Maybe Low Spark, Unbroken Chain, Shakedown, Masons, NFA & a couple nice between song jams really opened up the guitarists completely.

That show really isn't that good until Dark Star (4-27-01) or if I'm confused, and it's 4-29-01, that show is soooo over-rated. 4-30-01, 4-20-01 & 4-14-01 rule that tour.

where you there ?

I think those electric factory shows were definitely the type of "had to be there to get it shows"...

not trying to start a whole gimmish but both the electric factory shows I saw were absoultely scorching...

I find 4/20 well extremely well played and crispy on cd, but I also think its a little sterile sounding, but guess what? I wasn't THERE, so I cant really judge...

All I know us that the efactory was QUITE ELECTRIC and both those shows COMPLETELY blew my mind...

FRIEND OF THE DEVIL!
Somebody said FOTD was ordinary ... shortly after it started, just after Phil almost kinda messed up the line "... took my 20 dollar bill ..." when I got discouraged by some kids (laughing at their friend who had too much too fast I guess and was rolling around on the hill out of control) and started walking up the mountain when the sighting of a few black bears turned us around. On the way down the mud-slide of a walkway I could have sworn the lyrics to FOTD were not as I recalled them for some reason, but I just figured I was hearing things.

Then I found a good recording on archive.org already and had to listen to FOTD. I have the recording taped by Rob ... and at about 9:10 to 9:20 into FOTD, Phil sings this line ... " ? ... ? ... you can borrow from your friend, the devil got a 20 dollar bill, your friend only got 10 ..."

The problem is I can't quite pick up the first part, the questions marks in the quote above. Has anybody heard this line before? Does anyone know how the line starts? Was this ad-lib by Phil?

I believe it is an "extra" verse that Hunter wrote yet was not included in "final" version...

Thought Phil "added" it within the last year of shows played (I could be wrong)

Definitley not your "typical" version of FOTD both lyrically and musically...

I expected to hear it (I was at the show)yet I was pleasently surprised (usually not my fav tune)

"Best" P&F version yet!

exerpt from annotated lyrics site:

I'd changed the fourth verse, about parlaying the twenty dollars into five thousand and, except for the all important Friend of the Devil hook, the lyrics were pretty much as they stand today minus a fifth verse which goes:

You can borrow from the Devil
You can borrow from a friend
But the Devil give you twenty
When your friend got only ten

Yet again, nothing short of PHILNOMINAL!!!

I drove to S.F. post show (yes for a pretty peggy-o)!!! Made it to Haight Ashbury yesterday!!!! So, while all y'all were representing at Dark Star Orchestra in Hartford. I was listening in on the very steps to 710...!Now today i find myself back in the grind getting ready for Dark Star to play in Danbury tonight.

What amazing lives we trippers lead and what amazing paths we walk. i wish i could just write about it forever...but i got more these eyes have to see, more these ears have to listen to, and more these shoes and soul have to jam to.

Whatever you do, take care of your shoes and when and if you get confused, just listen to the music play!!!!

BRAVO Phil, Molo, Warren, Scho, & particle dude, BRAVO

PLEASE JOIN US AT THE VIBES!!!!!!!!

I was at the show and since then I have listened to the download off of the archive twice, and you know what... I can't help but dancing during different times of the show...

Kinda of reminds of a band I used to see back in the 80's ....Grateful Dead

Had a great time even though Al flopped in the middle of Althea. For the most part it was an uptempo rock and roll show. Something for everybody----what a 1st set---un-fucki' --believable.

How could you not like it. Greatest hits, fine with me.. Short break, Phil knows the conditions on the hill were bad.

If it is his last show he went out with a mo fo big time.

Thanks Phil-----you brought the lumber.

Simply put... it was the best Phil show BY FAR that Ive heard since the "Q" days. I keep listening to my webcast recording over and over even though its all broken up due to webcast problems. Anybody know where i can get a "clean" copy of the show? Did everybody experience webcast problems?

Any officially released video would contain more of a Woodstock format & no full sets I bet.

P&F, thet have a DVD out already - and cut half the show out, leaving a massive 78 minute (whatever) set.

Great views and reviews! Thanks a bunch! Bottom line for me is this show totally smoked! Scarlet > Eyes > Fire....Are you kidding me?! This is so unique and smoking that anything feeling other than dancing your butt off and singing praises is just plaing silly. :-) It would seem that it is much more important than if we've seen certain songs a lot previously, or critiquing every tiny bit of each lead, or pause, or vocals, or how much we like certain songs, the overall vibe, band unity, scene, and jammingness of the gig is what really matters. To me anyway! How lucky are we to be able to keep seeing Phil and thes amazing bands! Where's Joan?!
Peace.

listening to this show now, it still sounds good. so do shows from boston of '01, hartford '01, others that are obvious. what i wonder is, what will this sound like to me in 5 or 9 years?

i remember around '88 feeling like dead shows were sometimes feeling stale. then, i'd give them six months, pop the tapes into the stereo, and i'd think, wow, was i really AT that show? what had happened to ME that i couldn't feel the excitement at the event itself? once i realized my excessive srutiny, i opened msyelf up to the experience despite the urge to be negative (the onset of midi seemed like a travesty-end-of-an-era-black-hole). somehow, it was a matter of letting go of ego.

then came the internet. it ain't like picking up a "dupree's diamond news" flyer at a show. on those, there were no reviews. we drooled over set lists alone and mused with IMAGINATION over what the scene, the show, might have been like. how would jerry have reacted to real-time criticism of his antics? sorry folks. in '95, list serves may have had the acerbic desire to dethrone, but that wasn't my real-time, country fair feeling. we left that crankiness to the nay-sayers at shows who didn't even seem to be enjoying themselves. (i remember an acquaintance at philly in '89 saying "never again." he missed the warlocks that fall. oops.)

fast forward to our instant review world. so many posters or bloggers or whatever we call them are SO critical that i even stopped reading reviews after '01, for the same reason (i.e., bad vibes dude, i'm going to the other party where people are more concerned with how beautiful the moon looks). folks were trashing and immediately criticizing complex music that takes a while to adjust to. in fact, i still can't say i have a full understanding of my beloved orpheum '01 run, just as i find nuances in repeated listenings to another november run that enthralled me: 11-01 / 11-02-85.

perhaps i'm circling around what i always loved about the dead: the scene and the music were always changing. if you want to hear someone perform a song exactly as it sounded on their album released in '73 or something, there are plenty of bands that do that; go ahead and partake. if you venture into deadland, all bets are off and you give yourself over to the muse. sometimes, the muse isn't kind to you. sometimes the muse has a magic wand that splatters glitter and stars and phosphorescent goo at every turn. sometimes, it meets us in the middle.

what i'm saying is that reactionary reviews of music can't even scratch the surface. it was a joy to see phil. this particular ensemble with scofield harkened back to the days of the q, but they were different again. what a gift! the scene "gelled" when everyone was exhausted on the 3rd night (where's kesey when you need him?).

maybe there are other dead related bands that i don't know about (INTENTIONAL HYPERBOLE, just to alert those who would send a trashing flame. btw, isn't that what it was called in the mid-90s when you would trash someone for their opinions on-line? a "flame"? i prefer my flames to be conjuring hope and good feelings, since they are harder and harder to find en masse.)

anyway, there is no other in phil's league. his shows are unpredictable. i did not know what would unfold, though i had my expectations. if he didn't do what i wanted, so be it. i had to sit through plenty of "i will take you home"s. actually, i prefer phil and warren's low points to that brent sentimentality. "blow away" on the other hand is something altogether different, but i digress . . .

scofield and warren are solid here. however, they do slip into a basic bar band sound from time to time, mostly because they are sniffiing each other out and exploring. rock isn't scofield's preferred medium, first off. second, it took the Q a while to gel. of course, once they did . . .

but this folks is a lesson in mortality. soon enough, we'll look back to mt. jam with the inevitable envy of "remember when" because there ain't gonna be no othah (sorry, north-east-ism).

so, to the cranks out there, this was a great show. to run back from the bathrooms after the short break and to get a full psychedelic second set with search lights scanning through the sweaty clouds of our delusion was to find myself home in an environment which will not last forever. i applaud phil for being able to ressurect the ghost with such force and intensity.

perhaps our cynicism and criticism stems from greed: we want more than can possibly be delivered our way. mtn. jam was well-organized, mellow, full of what ever anyone needed, in a great location, and when placed in the pressure position, phil delivered.

who could ask for anything more?

(oh, i forgot about the greed . . .)

thanks to all the heads who made it real.

peace.

Details Details: Scofield quotes a couple of bars of 'Spoonful' during the closing jam of 'New Speedway Boogie'.

Yeah, heard that spoonful jam too. It was just part of what I thought was an AMAZINGLY HOT show. Deinetly the best show in an awful long time! Lets hope (at least I do) that this line-up, or at least one as close as possible (Barraco on keys?) will do a bunch of shows in the fall!

>>>>>> what i wonder is, what will this sound like to me in 5 or 9 years?

To me, 98% sounds the same on 'tape' as it did live, hence, listening to the shows I was at is more special than any great show I wasn't at - but I have a memory known to reach down to the individual riff, be it 20 hours or 20+ years.

Middy hit it right on the head.

I, too, used to be critiquing the shows while I was there. When the GD was putting on some forgettable shows in the mid '80s, e.g. the Philly Civic Center run, I made a conscious decision to just let go and enjoy the whole scene, rather than give up on the scene.

I found I could really enjoy every show when I didn't set the bar unrealistically high. A lot of my friends stopped going to shows, and they missed a whole lot. I will nevere forget the glory of watching Phil, Bob and Jerry standing three across and singing Box of Rain together, and I will not forget the muddy mountainside sets of Phil and Friends at Hunter 2007.

There were great times to be had, and there still are.

I thought Mtn. Jam 2007 was a great time. Loved that Karma Wash and the Bears!!
