Last night's Zappa Plays Zappa was sensational as Dweezel Zappa and Company played a solid 2 3/4 hour set of some of Frank's most beloved tunes. Zappa member Ray White handled the vocals and was fantastic. It must be said that Dweezel really dials in his dad when he plays the guitar. The big band really knew how to swing as they performed Zappa's signature complex meters and time changes perfectly. A couple of times during the marathon evening Frank himself, (via achival video footage), made an appearance. If you love the music of Frank Zappa then Zappa Plays Zappa is not to be missed. It was sure nice to be in the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen once again.

Here the setlist or rather as much of it that I can recall:

Dog Breath
City of Tiny Lites
Advance Romance
Carolina Hardcore Ecstasy
Dumb All Over, featuring Frank Zappa
Pygmy Twylite
Son of Suzy Creamcheese
Brown Shoes Don’t Make It
America Drinks and Goes Home
Dupree’s Paradise
Uncle Remus
Wind Up Workin’In a Gas Station
Joe’s Garage
San Ber’dino
Willie The Pimp
The Illinois Enema Bandit
Wild Love
Yo Mama

Encore:
Cozmic Debris, featuring Frank Zappa
G Spot Tornado
The Muffin Man, featuring Frank Zappa

I saw the show at the Warfield last year and was really surprised by how good it was, and how good Dweezel was.

Glad to hear it worked in Berkeley. Were there any "special guests" other than Frank himself?

The muffin man is seated at the table in the laboratory of the Utility Muffin
Research Kitchen... reaching for an oversized chrome spoon he gathers an
Intimate quantity of dried muffin remnants and brushing his scapular aside
Procceds to dump these inside of his shirt...

He turns to us and speaks:

"Some people like cupcakes better. I for one care less for them!"

Arrogantly twisting the sterile canvas snoot of a fully charged icing
Anointment utensil he poots forths a quarter-ounce green rosette (oh ah yuk
Yuk... let’s try that again...!) he poots forth a quarter-ounce green rosette
Near the summit of a dense but radiant muffin of his own design.

Later he says:

"Some people... some people like cupcakes exclusively, while myself, I say
There is naught nor ought there be nothing so exalted on the face of god’s grey
Earth as that prince of foods... the muffin!"

Girl you thought he was a man
But he was a muffin
He hung around till you found
That he didn’t know nuthin’

Girl you thought he was a man
But he only was a-puffin’
No cries is heard in the night
As a result of him stuffin’

I don't know if last years show was better, but I left this one smiling just as much. Really excellent execution of the songs and great sound if a little loud and high end from the 6th row...oh bummer. Truly, if you like this music, it is such a pleasure to hear it performed live and with such integrity to it's source. This was another moment of serious consequence. SOOO many people feeling such joy over the music being played makes me think back to another such a time. No, not the same, but similar. After the show, all the FZ heads compared notes on what they heard and teases, and quotes from other songs, and general minutae, and what does THAT sound like.

This is a GREAT touring band. I wonder if they could get Jimmy Herring.......HA!!!

Your Friend,

PD

Frank would have cracked up at the number of people raising their thumbs during 'Wind Up Working in a Gas Station'.

Show me your thumb if you're really dumb~

Great review, Nick. Looks like I'll do the Denver FillMart show now, as I was on the fence.

Pretty similar setlist to what they played this summer at 10KLF, which also was an excellent set. Looking forward to seeing this outfit again- glad you saw a great show.
