To: Richard (Sunra): Not to be ovely critical or negative, but, if you are going to post setlists, it really helps if you know all the names of the songs. Thay have been doing That's it for the Other One, (Cyptical Envelopment, the Other One) for at least four decades.

Well, the list is up there pretty well. Second set is Jam>Wheel>Cryptical>Watchtower>Other One, HSF, Lovelight.

Very solid first set, but not spectacular. Except for Sugaree, which was long and great.

Acoustic set was marred by sonic difficulties. I don't think Phil could hear himself and I certainly couldn't hear him from the front balcony. Right after, and I mean right after Brokedown, he put the bass down and went over to the monitor mixer to complain, throwing is hand's up in the air like "what am I supposed to do here?". The rest of the band was still on stage, I guess thinking there were supposed to be more songs, but it was not to be. But the jam after FOTD, which was more bluegrassy than cajun to me, was the highlight. Larry just unleashed on the fiddle.

Third set was a winner. Great jam in Cryptical, and out of it into Watchtower, which was very hard driving. Phil just did not let up on the punching bass at all, it was almost as if the jam didn't stop and they just sang watchtower over it. The big roll intro and bomb into Other One was rockin'. Too bad Jackie had to pee right after the second verse. I can't imagine they were planning on stopping that song cold in its tracks. But the Help>Slip>Franklin's was very nice, with Franklin's being particularly hot and including some nice guitar work from Jackie too. Lovelight was short but also really nice.

They had a good half hour before midnight, so I was hoping for a two song encore. NFA seemed like a given, but I thought maybe a Box first. Oh well. A nice send off and a fine set to end the run.

RC. Well, I've seen the GD do the Other One, Phil and Friends do The Other One, That's It For The Other One, Cryptical, etc. in many different sequences and incarnations over the past 30+ years.

I guess my posts were too Cryptical, :-)
At least they weren't Crytical :-)

Just got back from tonight's show.
The Riv was only about 2/3 full or so but was still a sweltering hot box.
The first set I felt was pretty meh, besides the really killer Sugaree. It just felt too much like Jackie Green and Friends. Lacked a lot of energy.
The acoustic set was pretty cool. Never saw Phil on an upright before! The highlight was a fiddle jam led by Campbell. In fact, I'd say that Campbell was the saving grace of the first 2 sets.
The third set was a totally different beast though. The band went from being a pretty decent Dead cover band with a penchant for lame Jackie Green tunes to a full blown rock monster looking to stomp your city into dust.
The entire set was just one sweaty, heavy rocking blow out with Green and Campbell stepping up like guitar gods and Molo pounding away like mad. Phil sang everything but the lead on Watch Tower and sounded swell, could be I was just tired of Green. But, Green really nailed the vocal on Watch Tower and seemed like the genuine article. He made a valid attempt on Lovelight but when he sang it reminded me of a little kid dressing up like a grown up. He needs a few more years to grow into some of these tunes.
As bored as I was with the first part of the show I was blown away by the last half or so. Better to have a strong ending then vice versa.

I've waited my whole life to see Phil lean into The Other One like he did tonight, and the moment he finished loosening everyone's fillings, he gave the band the hand sign to get the fucker rolling. It was a powerful TOO, but I think he was in the mood to take it even one step further. I'd like to think it was his pent up aggression left over from the frustrating acoustic set. (He was NOT happy with his crew during the acoustic set. He stormed off stage with his hands in the air.)

Each night, they better dialed in Phil's bass. Tonight, he made my teeth rattle, and at the end of the show, he made the railings in the balcony audibly rattle above the cheer of the crowd. They dropped Molo's volume just a tad, and I think that contributed nicely to Phil being more prominent. They also picked up the strength of his low end and bumped up the volume, but Molo being dropped that little bit was key, too. In general, it was less tinny and piercing and more balanced.

The 2nd set of the 2nd Chicago night was higher in cerebral energy, but the 2nd set of the 3rd night was more aggressive and packed with more muscle. It was great to have two equally satisfying, yet entirely different, meals like that.

For those keeping score on That's It for The Other One: there was a Cryptical Envelopment and a The Other One, but there was not a complete suite. I'm sure that goes without saying, but just to help clear up any question.

Nice reviews. As ZM said, Phil really hammered that staccatto thriplet run into THE OTHER ONEm and then he hand signalled to the band to take it and run, to GO CRAZY. Which they did! What a release of energy!

Also, the HSF carried a lot of the same energy and abandon. Should be fun to listen to again. THANKS to the tapers, AS ALWAYS!

JC and ZM, thanks for your help finally learning the correct titles for the parts of TOO. I am serious. Thanks.

Some people out there need to learn how to accept constructive criticism in the spirit in which it is offered. I would humbly suggest that if one is keeping a set list, it would be a good idea to get the song names right. Especially if posting them on the Internet. Until the rest of us can get the CD, tape or stream the Archive, that is all we have to go on. Thank you.

Ronald B, it is unquestionably a DICK manuever to criticize someone who is sending in a setlist from the heated moments of a show, in real time, for not getting the name of a song 100% correct. Stop being a jackass.

HEY ALL!
It's really no biggie. I don't take it personally. I will not be dissuaded from posting here, and I will continue to post from the shows whenever possible.

RC, I don't feel you are being mean spirited or trying to be.
I understnd the frustration, and constructive criticism is always welcome. I think your wording seemed a bit antagonistic to some.

Do understand that posting from the shows is:
1- a commitment. Once I start I cannot stop just because I am unsure of a couple of things
2-difficult due to connectivity issues
3- somewhat of a sacrifice as I am paying a different kind of attention to the show
4- done for the benefit of whoever apprecites it, despite it's shortcomings
5- a BLAST as I enjoy giving my own running commentary. I think it givs those of us not at the shows a feel for the event

Seiously, no harm, no fould. It's all good. Don't let the small stuff get you down. You will feel a lot better than i you get down for absolutely no reason and to no end.

:-) :-) :-) Peace and Love to ALL :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Let's leave this section for show reviews only.

I really enjoy reading these in real time and then all the reviews, bot positive, neutral and negative.

Chat is also fun, but I cannot do it from the shows on my Treo 650 :-(

is anyone else trippin on the fact they played Big Mon in the acoustic set?

caught RRE and HBR on Friday night and they all were on stage for one of the *biggest* Big Mons I have ever heard.

awesome bluegrass tune am curious to hear how this band played it....

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By scott (Magnetosphere) on Monday, October 08, 2007 - 02:20 pm: Edit Post

I saw Friday's show too and enjoyed it plenty, but felt Sunday was the better of the two. Mix-wise things were much more in line, with all musicians coming through pretty clearly, and Phil's bass finally having that heft we all crave. Molitz was still a bit buried, but I could definitely make him out WAY better than Fri.

The acoustic set was real nice, but some tech issue was afoot on stage, so they wrapped it up perhaps earlier than they intended to. If nothing else, it was fun to see Phil play some conservative but very precise upright bass, and Larry put on a fiddle CLINIC with Big Mon, during which the place went totally bonkers.

Jackie's vocals also impressed me throughout both nights. He really sings the Dead material well, despite clearly not having personal history with it, and without trying to ape the original versions. I know some felt he was young/green and needs to grow into these tunes, but I personally enjoyed the hell out of his confident, soulful deliveries, esp. on complex tunes like China Cat Sunflower, where the phrase lengths are odd on most of the lines. Somehow he managed to make them fit in his own way w/o sounding like he was reading them off the page (which is something I felt Joan often wrestled with in past). He also really nailed Loose Lucy on Friday night, seeming stunningly at home with a song I'm guessing he'd only first heard in recent months. I esp. liked how he handled Candyman and Sugaree on Sunday, and he drove the band to a rousing fast climax on Casey Jones. Phil's definitely given this kid alot of rope on stage, and he seems to be taking it up without much hesitation.

Jackie's a damned competent guitar player too, though not necessarily a psychedelic master. But he's a good, sympathetic listener and he's not afraid to abandon his rhythm parts and walk out on the limb to jam. He and Larry got into that dual-guitar-harmony Allmann Bros. space quite a few times on Friday night, and though it was technically impressive, musically I didn't find those jams that thrilling. But last night I felt they were doing less of that, with more interactive jams instead of a scripted/contrived two-guitar sound. You read the interviews with Jackie and he talks about mostly deferring to Larry on the jams, but I think his view is rapidly changing there. He took the lead several times last night, and also dove headlong into some duals/exchanges with Larry that were pretty fun. They're both really good straight blues players, so if you're into that style, you'll love these guys. But if you're looking for Garcia's mind-melting myxolidian delay freakouts, you're probably going to find yourself a bit less sated (though I will say both guys cooked up a couple nice crescendos for us at odd intervals last night).

Phil's made it clear he's not looking to prop the next Jerry Garcia up there for us to re-live it all with, so I have no beef with hearing new interpretations from the excellent players Phil brings along. And I trust that with time they'll both continue to grow in their ability to go somewhere with this material. Larry definitely seemed more confident and willing to get crazy this time than he did last summer, so I'm sure that can only mean good things for the future.

I was really hoping for an Other One for Sunday night, and they did a great job with it, though it sure did end abruptly, seeming due to Jackie's need to pee. Must have been a serious situation to get Phil to shut the door on a major tune like that. Kind of funny, really, but I did find myself wondering where our Other One went... I will confirm that Phil did an awesome super-bomb after the band's first pass at the intro, at which point they RE-introduced a much juicier Other One than I first thought we were in for. This was also one of the only times Molitz got off his normal keyboard to get freaky on the Moog, and I really enjoyed his weird synth solo. I kind of wanted to hear Jackie's take on Weir's vocal parts, but Phil sang it as usual and did ok, but I bet Jackie could have spit it out with a bit more gusto. You'll notice Weir barely plays guitar at all when he's singing that one, so it's no wonder Phil struggles a bit to get the vocals out while keeping the bassline chugging along.

By the time they hit Help on the Way and Slipknot, they really cranked it up and stretched out in some very interesting ways. I was dizzingly happy with the band's work on Slipknot - some excellent jamming ensued and they really nailed the coordinated riff sections too. Help on the Way was also one of the best vocals I've heard from Phil - he was all over this one.

We'd been told upon arrival that the band had the venue till 1 a.m., which could have made for a fourth set, or a REALLY LONG third set, but that was clearly not in the cards when they left the stage after Lovelight, which along with Franklins made for a good rocking set closer.

All in all, I'd say these were some promising shows from yet another interesting new incarnation of PAF. Definitely check 'em out if they're coming your way, esp. if you're up for checking out someone new in the form of Jackie Green. And Larry Campbell's really starting to come into his own with this band, so keep a close eye on him too.

Ronald, what does it really matter if you have the CORRECT setlist or not? not to imply that Richard is sending you false information, but why do you hang on it so much? you werent there. i love to have updates on the sets as they happen and i am very grateful for those who contribute, but in the scheme of things..who cares?

Really appreciate the time you put into it, esp. for the benefit of those of us living vicariously through descriptive and detailed postings like yours.

"Is anyone else trippin on the fact they played Big Mon in the acoustic set?"

Yea, me, but there really aren't too many people here that would know it. You have to be into bluegrass on a semi-serious level to catch that one. Very cool though.

Great review Scott, thanks.

Glad you guys enjoyed my review - it's my pleasure to give a little back after all the great Zoner reviews I've enjoyed myself over the years!

One more thing. If you haven't already, I highly recommend reading this Jackie interview to put these shows in perspective:

http://www.jambands.com/Features/content_2007_09_2 7.00.phtml

I mean, seriously, what young NON-DEAD-HEAD musician gets a call from Phil Lesh after a chance meeting at a festival and ends up joining his band and touring with him?! This whole thing is pretty damned cool. Reading this interview before the shows gave me a lot of respect for how much time and energy Jackie has put into this, based on knowing how deeply we all love this music.

By the time I heard him peeling off line-after-line of China Cat Sunflower on Friday, I knew he wasn't just being swept along. The kid is into it, fully. To think that Phil has the vision (and sheer balls!) to look outside the easily tapped legion of eager Deadhead guitarists, to find somebody young and fresh and hungry with no background in this stuff, says alot about Phil's stewardship of the Dead legacy. This is not a re-hash. I think this is a great new chapter in Phil's ongoing post-Dead experiment, and I applaud him and his band for what they're doing here.

Speaking of "Phil's People", I caught a clear view of Phil/Jill in a warm embrace behind Phil's amps just before the third set began. And I later saw Jill animatedly communicating with crew members in the stage-exit as I was walking down Lawrence Ave. after the show.

The Chicago "Run" Review:

First, I know that the temperature of the venue has been mentioned yet I must say that these were the hottest (temp-wise) shows I have ever experienced (inside OR out.)

That being said, MUSICALLY, these shows were as hot or HOTTER then the 100+ degree temps inside...

Night 1:

1st set: This first set (along with the other night's 1st sets) was a solid, well-played set of great rock music. I'd rate the energy/intensity level at about medium with the exception of the Cumberland. This version of Cumberland was absolutely RAGING! The guitar interplay was fast and wild with Phil just DRIVING it all home. A definite clue on what we could expect for the weekend. Overall, a good 'warm-up' for the 2nd set (which is how I felt about all 3 night's 1st set.)

2nd set: Cosmic Charley Opener!! Nice, drippy version with some crazy vocal "stylings" from Phil on the "Calliope" line - a cartoon like voicing - cool and hilarious at the same time!
Scarlet>Eyes>St.Stephen: great, great guitar work throughout. Larry really came through and Jackie really impressed with his work as well (didn't know the 'kid' had it in him.) I was hoping the jam out of Saint would lead into the first "11" of the tour yet it was not to be, instead....Millenium Jam! Well...sort of. I would not consider this a full on Millenium Jam. It was definitly very, very similair to the actual "Jam" but did not have the cord changes of the ones I have experienced in the past. Nevertheless, an excellent, intense segment. This lead into a very space-y, Pink Floyd-like jam that had me believing that they were really going play the "Shine On..." Molitz was playing some trippy, space keys that had me believin'! When I saw the tech hand Larry the Citern (sp?), I had a feeling the "MoM" was coming (based on the RR show.) Cool, psychedelic version although I was straining to hear Larry's instrument. The Rider>Rider was fun. The Golden Road = HOT! And the Suger Mag/SSDD had that classic, feel good Grateful Dead vibe. The Tom Thumb's encore was a welcomed surprise (since they had played it the previous show.)

Overall,a solid, well-played show that only hinted at the monster that we had coming to us the next night.

To be con't...

That is a great point Scott, re: Phil's stewardship and ongoing post-Dead Experiment. He was and always will be a Berio disciple, and this fits the modus operandi of Phil, Berio, TC, Ned and so many others.

I think its neat and different.
Kinda like the Grateful Dead.
Gee....I wonder.....

Some folks out there need to read up on Chairman Mao on criticism. I didn't know that I would start such a firestorm. (A single spark can start a prarie fire.)(A tempest in a Teapot.) (Much ado about Nothing.) It is important to me to find out what they played especially when I wasn't there. As a former New Yorker, i could have been really nasty but thought I was pretty nice about it. Must be a lot of horseshoe players out there. (Close counts.) I don't know the names of most Jackie Greene songs (love his initials). Or Ryan Adams, or Trey, or String Cheese, or Railroad Earth etc., either. I usually ask around. (I also ask directions when I'm lost.) I like it when Phil plays with different people. Mix things up a bit. Keeps the music fresh and interesting.

Notes about That's It for The Other One, from "The complete annotated GD Lyrics", annotations by David Dodd.
"Studio recording: Anthem of the Sun. First documented performance: October 22, 1967, at Winterland Arena in San Francisco. It remained in the repertoire thereafter, though the Cryptical Envelopment was dropped after 1972 (it was brought back for eight performances in 1985). Therefore, the part of the lyric titled 'The Faster We Go the Rounder We Get' came to be known as 'The Other One.' 'Cryptical Envelopment was later revived by Phil & Friends, and by The Dead. Over the years, various inconsistencies in titling and crediting of the various portions of the suite have resulted in almost no one knowing anymore exactly who wrote what and what it was called, or why."

The Chicago “Run” Review (con’t)…

Night 2:

Set 1: Another rockin’set and my fav 1st set of the 3 nights. Schoolgirl opener was played in what I like to call, “Bobby style.”(at least the version The Dead played) I would have preferred it done ala Pigpen yet it was a good version, nonetheless and maybe more appropriate to Jackie’s vibe. Good start with medium energy.
Next, we see Larry stepping up to the peddle-steel. I was thinking something good and my buddy called for “Pride.” A second later, BAM, Phil takes us riding down that highway. Larry was just about perfect, hitting all the right notes. The rest of the band cruised right along. For the bluesy guitar “break” Jackie took the lead. He was a little loose and wild yet Phil managed to rein him in (somewhat) and everything sounded fine.
This one is a favorite of mine and a great treat early in the show. I took it as a sign that something special was in the works for the eve (as if just being at a Phil show wasn’t special enough)…
A short pause and they roll right into “This Wheel’s…” I have to say I am not a big fan of Larry’s vocals yet I love this Dylan (and Danko) song and Larry gave us a fine effort with nice backing vocals from Jackie. I thought the line from the course was appropriate: “Notify my next of kin, this Wheel shall explode!” This was a great analogy of the type of energy that was coming from the band and crowd on this night, for sure.
The band seemed to be getting into a groove at this point and was ready to really give IT to us. So, what do we get? Scarlet!!!
Here we go, guitars weaving in and out, beautiful piano accents, all driven along by Phil and Molo’s powerful rythym and bounce. Phil’s vocals were as strong as ever – I love the way he tells the story. The jam that followed the “Heart of gold band” line had an interesting call and response between Larry and Jackie with a cool harmonic sound. This culminated in an intense flurry of sound which Phil brought down to a nice mellow groove. This work it way into Spots of Time. I like this song (I was familiar with it from the CO recordings.) It definitely slowed the crowd down, though. I stayed on my feet, sweating right along with the music. Does anyone out there have anymore info besides that it may be a new, original Phil song? Good song, nuff said.
The other real highlight of this set came next: Althea! Phil on lead vox!! Cool, slow grove as Phil really articulated the lyrics. Some nice jamming, too. When Phil uttered the line: “you know this space is HOT!” it was almost a growl – the crowd went nuts (we knew what he was saying on many levels.)
Tell Me Mama – good Jackie tune that has a Dylan-like flavor (yet a much dif song then the Dylan song of the same name.) Folky and bluesy.
Bertha ended it and it was a rocker. The crowd was jumping right along ready for more…and we would get more then we could imagine.
Great first set!!

To be con't

Was at Sunday's show--and it was hot, literally! Figure the inside temp. of the theater was hovering somewhere in the upper 90s (might even have broke 100). With no ventilation. And 4 bucks for a bottle of water. Began to feel ill from it all and left w/ my wife before the end of the first set.

If a venue can't even keep a reasonable environment for a show (forgot to mention that the condition of the place in general was poor at best), why should we fork over our hard-earned dough and just encourage them to keep treating us like cattle? I ain't going back to the Riviera, and I encourage all of you out there to think twice about going as well.

"Goin' where the weather suits my clothes, ain't gonna be treated this old way."

So Sunday we ate a fine meal at Waves in the W Lakefront lobby. Anticipation was very high as the show the night before was off the hook! Luckily we were now aware of the venue sauna protocol so we all dressed accordingly and were able to make it to the venue early. It was interesting to see that the venue had changed policies to help deal with the heat vector. They were allowing water bottles in etc. I've read here that some people had difficulty being searched, violated, ripped off at the front door, but our party had none of these issues. We found our way upstairs again, being of average age 35 we're feeling just a bit old for the floor. (it's nice to have a seat. We sat dead center maybe 4 rows back from the first GA row of the balcony (the section behind the "vip" zone) The first 3 or 4 rows were filled with what we later came to think of as the Geritol section - folks who seemed to either be old and unimpressed with the music or in such a deep psychedelic trance that they needed to remain seated. The Sunday vibe was more laid back than Saturday and it was nice to see the place a bit more relaxed. Good Lovin' stomped out of the gates a bit slow, but definitely tight - the message was recieved loud and clear. Jackie's Mexican Girl was quite nice and definitely earnest. Candyman is one of my favorites and I've been really glad to have it return to the heavy rotation. Jackie handled it well and Larry continued to be a monster. I should stop and note that Molo is really holding this whole thing together. His sonic assault is breathtaking to behold. I'm glad that at least one member of PNF has been consistent almost from the get go in '99. Let it Ride was next. Phil turned me into a big fan of Ryan Adams and I love the RA tunes in the rotation. I've seen this one a few times and nothing quite comes close to the Jones Beach '06 version where Phil was giddy as he ramped this one up. It was still great to hear nonetheless and I'm hoping that he'll maybe throw Shakedown on 9th street back into the mix, I think Jackie could handle the vocals quite well maybe something like Loose Lucy->Shakedown on 9th->Shakedown would be a barn burner. Anywhoodleydoodley up turned Sugaree next. Hearing this come on, I was a bit deflated. I grew tired of the Sugaree's during the Q's reign. In fact I thought that I never needed to hear it again after NYE 2000-01 at the Kaiser. That night Warren and Jimmy created a hall of infinite mirrors in the Sugaree jam that somehow connected all Sugaree's through the black hole at the center of the galaxy. Needless to say the Sugaree's since then have been tired blues shuffle's to nowhere. This Chicago run had me really getting used to being wrong with my preconceptions and Sugaree was yet another Blast OFF! And it chugged nicely into Casey Jones which has always been a shrug or a reprimand for a particular vein of partying. This night Casey lauded the shiny engine gleaming (and my engine was gleaming just the same). To me this was the definitive version of CJ in my entire show going experience, thanks boys.
Setbreak came and Phil readied us for the Special Presentation. I'd like to pause here for a moment to thank the very dedicated cocktail server in our section. She brought us 4 double absolute and sodas every 12 minutes like clockwork. I've never been in a show situation where the booze was so readily delivered to my hot head.
The acoustics came out and they Rippled us right off the bat...look out here come the water works as the acoustic set sets the controls for "SAP". Cry yourself dry being the next wave of that ocean. Friend of the Devil picked things up nicely and the Big Mon breakdown after FOTD was amazing. Larry Campbell took his place as our new lead instrument God by shimmering his fiddle right through my frontal lobe. Damn I don't expect the hot jams in the middle of the acoustic set, and maybe this is my segue into becoming one of those middle aged bluegrass hippie devotees (worse things can happen)Brokedown was a breakdown and I cried like a baby. Phil had a tantrum of his own as his monitors didn't seem to be working so well. His crew felt the wrath and that was the first time that I've seen Phil get angry on stage.
Setbreak II was casual and I was watching Molo indulge himself a bit. The band came out quickly and noodled and teased Watchtower. The Wheel was blissfull and amazing and the sege into Cryptical was ingenious. For all of you douchebags on this thread arguing about the reporting of setlist, go fuck yourselves. The way that the band was slinking noodling and teasing I would have called it jam->watchtowerish->cryptic->wheels rolling over you->watchtowerish->cryptical envelopment->otherworldly->wheelish->watchtower->
cryptic->SHABOOM!!!Other One....Yowza Phil...easy tiger kalama shamalama dingdong. And full stop "piss call" for Molitz and Greene, making our party realize that perhaps this new line up should be called "Phil and The Whiz Kids". Then Help! so damn tight that it taught me how to listen to Help in a new way, that hook is just golden, but who would ever expect SLIPKNOT to have gone under such major renovation. This jam had whole new rooms, porticullesses, decks, patios, saunas. It was like an architecture convention in there, please listen to the Slipknot from this night if you don't listen to anything else. In my mind this really sums up the power of this new incarnation. The journey back into Franks was sweet as was the rolling away of the dew. After the piss call, and the HSF it seemed like an almost end of set, but then they cranked up Lovelight. I'm also not a fan of Lovelights post 1969, but Phil and the Whiz kids to the rescue. They played it straight ballroom style wicked psychedelic blues boogie jamming...so nice it shined and shined. Then was it a second encore or first, our tight posse was confused, but relishing the sweet confusion. NFA crowned the run. It was so tight, so on! so new (how could NFA possibly be new?) Check em out folks get it while it's hot. Our posse lingered in Chicago for another day, wining and dining and checking out art. What a fantastic city Chicago I salute you for your warmth and vision, I'll be back. After coming off the Phil and Chitown we piled into the Impala and headed to Milwaukee for WILCO, but that's another story for another message board...
