Absolutely, Tom! Hey, if we can't be there with everyone having fun, we can at least live vicariously through the Zone. And, we've become pretty good at this virtual concert-going this tour, haven't we? :-)

Seriously, though, to me this raises the issue of Web casts. I'd pay a small fee to watch some Web casts of these shows; wouldn't you all?

Watch out this wheels on Fire and its gonna roll your ass over!! Go Phil...Home stretch. Though there are alot of repeats this tour i respect Phil for doing what they do best and at the same time testing new territories. I feel Phil is takin it a little bit slower with this band (as far as break-outs go) cause he is in it for the long run with these guys..Dreams are lies its the dreaming thats real.

Given the Sirius relationship and the 11 show run, all of which have basically sold out, i thought they might throw out a Dead Channel live broadcast of one of these shows. Woulda' sound killer coming off that satellite.

Robin,

I would absolutely pay for webcasts.

On the downside, Richard and Sun Ra would be out of a job and would wander aimlessly, cursing and grumbling about the good old days...

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Tom Melvin (Thom2) on Saturday, November 10, 2007 - 09:35 pm: Edit Post

You kidding? I'd pay to see every show of the tour as a web cast. I think the logistics would be a problem (cameras in peoples way, etc.) but I'm there 100%.

Have they done a Hard to Handle this tour yet?

Watching the Wizard of Oz with my 9 year old daughter, next best thing to being there.

>>>I have heard that if you tund off the audio of Wizard of Oz and Lay Dark Side of the Moon instead that it is trippy.

Indeed, it is. I had heard of it for years but never tried it until last year. It works, provided you cue the music at the proper moment and have it on repeat mode. It's fun for the head in you :-)

If you're into reading, you should check out "Wicked" -- it gives a completely different perspective of the witch, and it's very cool.

Saw the Pink Floyd laser light show at the Warner in DC with my 6 yr old daughter last year and we both had a great time. They played various excerpts of WoOz to go with Dark Side. It was hard to see the movie with the 3D glasses on. The glasses made it appear that they laser was rising out of your lap.

Just got back -- show was off the wall -- one of the best of the tour -- energy level was way high as was the crowd -- nokia security was no where to be found -- thank god for the broadway strike -- no lion king fans to annoy.

From top to bottom -- tonite was a rocker.

I had not planned to see any of the shows -- I was traveling for work and had family in town last week. But after pulling some strings, I was able to get me and my wife in tonight. I felt I should go to one if I could, and thank god that I did. The chance to see Phil at a sold-out Nokia was pretty damn cool.

Pretty good first set; one of the highlights for me was the jam out of Friend of the Devil, especially Larry's playing. And I am a sucker for Dire Wolf. Shakedown was a treat but I was hoping it would have been drawn out a bit longer.

I went to the show wanting to hear Help Slip Franklin's -- little did I know that I would be treated to everything that came before it. Jesus. I don't think I could have asked for a better second set, to be honest. (Although, Help was just a bit off; the Slipknot made up for it, though.) Both Stella and The Eleven were instrumentals.

Very happy I got to see at least one of the shows, that's for sure.

Kudos to the band, all of them.

Yes, another great show. No better, no worse than any of the other 3 Nokia shows I saw(2,3,9,10).. My personal favorite of those four was 11/2.

The Stella and the Eleven tonight were both instrumental, but the eleven was the Eleven, not just an eleven jam....

Tomorrow night I will be sitting at home in Philly, recovering from these shows, catching up on downloads of the Nokia shows and watching for show updates along with everyone else. Thankfully we have a lot of generous tapers in the house!

PHIL: I would pay for at least an audio stream of the shows on your tours....

I agree with everyone as to how fantastic tonight's show was from top to bottom. I gotta point out though the Stella Blue jam as just being gorgeous. It kept building and building and I think it just got to the point where only Jerry could have come in and done the lyrics justice, so they let it lie! Nice work on the pedal steel Larry! The Eyes was amazing as well (blew away the one they did with RA on Monday), again Larry nailed that one.

I'mot sure if this has been mentioned; but I nticed that the setlist as posted on the philzone is really not entirely correct. Technically i guess it is right. WHile both Stella and the 11 were played (stella was not a tease, as mentioned previously ?); they were played instrumentally - no lyrics. both were really good, but no words - just a slight "correction". can't wait for tommorrow

After 30 years of shows (40 if you count non-Grateful Dead related shows) this show is right at the top. Usually I say that the best show I ever saw was Jeff Beck on the Blow By Blow tour with Mahavishnu Orchestra opening in 1975.
I don't think I'm going to be able to say that anymore.

This is my fifth show of this run (31, 1, 6, and 8 being the others) and I missed the two that folk have been saying have been the best. If they were better than this one then there are a lot of people walking around with their minds blown because this one was stellar. The second set was some of the best stuff I've ever seen.

An instrumental Stella! OMFG. I 'm not sure if it was that it got to the point where only Jerry could have come in so they let it lie or if they had it planned that way the whole time. I'm inclined to think they had it planned because there was something very unusual about it right from the opening notes.

And earlier the Dire Wolf/Operator combo started what became the tone for the whole evening by sending me back to the old days big time. I'm a city boy these days but back when I was first listening to the Dead in my "cowboy" days before easy access to tapes and when shows were few and far between in the midwest we wore out the vinyls of American Beauty and Workingman's Dead and the combo took me right back to those days.

Before the show I was feeling a little foolish for coming back to an unplanned 5th show and paying more than face value for a ticket which was hard to come by, but somewhere in the second set I knew why I'd been pulled back. Phil was calling me (and a bunch of others I'm sure) to be there to hear it.
Wonder what he will pull out of his bag of tricks tonight?

This band has reached a place where, previously, only the Grateful Dead had tread. Phil has taken us all back there. Truly it has all 'COME(ing) AROUND...IN A CIRCLE' as we all have been 'THERE AND BACK'.

I have alway felt that vibe/space wjenever I have seen Phil and Friwnds, but this particular incarnation has the humbleness that let's the magic happen without trying to force it, not shoving it in your face or down your throat. I felt that way at Chicago, Camden and now at these Nokia Shows it has come to full stature...BLOOMIN' LIKE A RED ROSE.

I could go on and on.....and I will, if I am able....

SPACE IS THE PLACE!

The only shows I have seen on this run were at Nokia, and I have this general observation about the audience, which seems new to me. The theory of the encore is that the performers have completed their performance, and the audience expresses its appreciation to such a degree that the performers return to the stage and perform more, so as to reciprocate. Of course, this is mostly a fiction in concerts for the past few decades; audiences knew that they could expect encores, and performers planned to play them, but both treated the moment in the traditional way. This would include the Dead and its audience.
Everyone seems to agree that last night's show was superb, and when the band went off after Franklin's, as has been the case, everyone stood around talking until the band resumed the stage, as we all knew that they would. There was virtually no applause prior to the band's return, and you could not even hear it over the sound of the audience talking. When Box concluded, the band did not go offstage immediately, and it seemed to me that that this was necessarily the end, and that the band might very well do another song, but even before the lights were on, everyone was getting up to leave, and nobody was calling for more. Of course, the band walked off.
Is this just because we are older and it is late and we want to get going? Since we know that there will be an encore, is it that we don't want to waste energy to bring the band out? Is this generational, (and if so whose generation,) or a sign of the times? Comments?

I noticed the same thing at the Friday 11/9 show. The second set ended with the usual polite applause which subsided as the band left the stage. No one left the room, fully expecting an encore. I commented to my cohorts that the band should not even leave the stage if the encore is a given. The band returned quickly, song was sung, clap, gather your things and get going. Gone are the days when rhythmic clapping would persist even in lighted rooms until security moved us out. Maybe bands should break the routine and withhold encores occasionally.

I noticed the exact same thing on Friday night. New York crowds are notoriously awful at almost any concert, but I could not believe the lack of enthusiasm or appreciation from the crowd. It was really disturbing and while I know Phil gets this quite supernatural appreciation and love from everyone, come on now? There was literally no applause.... For a man who has been through so many trials and it is simply a miracle that he is alive and continues to try to push the boundaries of the music we all love. That shit sounds fresh. So 40 year old lawyer or stock brokers was looking at me like i was some kind of asshole for dancing during lovelight. Are you kidding? No offense to older heads, but I was fuckin disgusted with how lame the crowd was. The band put on a hell of a show and got almost no recognition for it. It was one of the few times I felt like I'de rather be surrounded by Bisco heads.

Also, saturday's setlist was exactly what i was looking for. so bummed i missed it.

regarding lack of applause at shows at the end, this is undoubtedly due to everyone being blown away

this has been happening at quality Phil shows for some time - I recall the great NJPAC shows in late 2005 experiencing the same phenomenon

there's a point where applause isn't enough, and you are simply stunned - the band knows this

and on which show is better than which, suffice it to say that this whole run has been very special, and is 100% entirely required listening

should be a box set

Not urging the band on for more has become the way of music for a while, but I have been to two shows this tour where the mold was broken, Red Rocks and Tuesday night, and listening to the steam, Glens Falls. At the Red Rocks and Glens Falls shows, Phil acknowledges it during the donor raps. But my feeling is that it is an aging and generational thing. As a group, us 'old geezers' who whooped it up until the cows came home are a little past it, and the younger crowd doesn't seem to have the tradition. I can remember at MSG in '79(which I referenced in an earlier thread), the ENTIRE GARDEN stayed for at least 15 minutes just going bonkers AFTER THE ENCORE, until one of stage hands came out and said something to the effect of, "You've just seen an epic show, but and the band is crushed, so that's it." So, that's only one man's observation. I also think that long runs like these Nokia shows, when people go multiple shows, produces a little more of the "Ok, I'll see them tommorrow night." I KNOW that happened after Monday' show length. That was one lame sendoff by the crowd, but the band was done as well, so it didn't matter I guess.

...Also, on Tuesday night the band acknowledged it a bit by milling about, and it looked to me like Larry and Steve wanted the other guys to step up and take a bow, but it kind of disolved, but as a group they DID notice the appreciation.

If this is going on other than in NYC then I don't know the reason.
On this NYC run, I think there are two reasons.
One is because there tends to be less applause at NYC rock shows, this is not the case at jazz shows.
The other is because the shows have been going right up until midnight and maybe because people know that things are running on a pretty strict schedule this tempers the applause. Also last night I'm pretty sure they brought the lights up real fast after Box of Rain which would also tend to disperse things.
I wouldn't be surprised if none of this manifests tonight though.

it is not a generational thing, it is more about how venue staff actively clamping down on the X factor of the crowd after learning how to deal with it over 40-50 years of shows...

Well.....Many a great review here. And perhaps I am a bit jaded after this being my 7'th show. I thought the first set left a lot to be desired. It was "nice" but it was also very "laid back" (and there is nothing wrong with that). It was also a bit choppy but I think that was because the band is now trying to do things they did not do before. And to that I take my hat off to them. I honestly can say that and always have said "no guts no glory" and by that I mean this band could easily do what they had done for the whole tour but they are still pushing and exploring. My first set favorite tunes were the good Lovin, Dire Wolf and the shakedown (This was my third shakedown and I think it was the best)!

Set two was very good as the band kept pushing. The song selection for me was superb. It was played very well. Again the band tried to push and push and the crowd did respond. When pushing to new limits there was the occasional flub but that just shows how Phil wanted to take the band to a new level. ( The new level I mean is to explore the spacey/improv of this band). This show may have been in the top 3 I had seen. There were many a brilliant moment and again it was as a set "the total package". You know that in all my reviews I had barely mentioned individual performances by band members as they have all been real good. But I must mention that in all the shows the one constant has been John "The Lion King" Molo. He has been the guiding force behind P&F for years and is a key ingredient to the rapid success of any of the incarnations.

looking forward to tonight.

re: lack of applause.

i feel as if phil is one of the bands where applause is given b/c of social mores. he connect on such a deeper level then a pre-conceived notion of appreciation like banging ur hands together. he is way more satisfied by the looks of utter shock and befuddlement, which means that the band brought IT. phil isnt some diva who demands applause, he demands ur attention and boy, did he get it last night.

Yo Casey,

Sorry if you took offense, none meant. I love that the younger crowd is carrying on the love of the music! BUT, if the WHOLE crowd, young and old, decided they were going to stay and go nuts clapping and yelling there's not a whole lot that 10 or 20 security guys (without guns) are going to be able to do about it. All us PHANS are in this together, and as group we each have our reasons why that doesn't happen. No big deal.

its different when they end on a power song rather than a mellow song...the GD would almost always end the 2nd set with a rocker...not fade, lovelight, sugar mag...and not a ballad like stella to end the show...phil mixes it up so much and ends on weird timings or slower songs sometimes...like the mon. show i was at. it ended with the fade out of dark star?...it was too weird, too mellow, the crowd ws already stuned by the great show, but the energy from the band and crowd was just falling away, so to end with dark star? the crowd didnt really applaud, we were stunned, a rocker would have brought it back up and thus applause...it was so late, i was so tired from the violas, the power of the scarlet>china cat, and great show, jsut a great feeling to have the energy used in such a musically wonderful way...but its just best to end with rockers, leaves a better feel...

^^^that's a good point. On Tuesday however, they did end with Brokedown and still got good applause, but the string of great songs (that Other One was incredible, and to go pretty much right into Brokedown was just stellar) matched with a shorter show might have done it.

>>i feel as if phil is one of the bands where applause is given b/c of social mores. he connect on such a deeper level then a pre-conceived notion of appreciation like banging ur hands together. he is way more satisfied by the looks of utter shock and befuddlement, which means that the band brought IT. phil isnt some diva who demands applause, he demands ur attention and boy, did he get it last night.<<

Steve, I think you hit it right on the head. When a Phil show is over, I'm often quite spent, and I usually find myself needing to digest what I just heard and to reflect on it. Clapping is something I may do because I realize I should. But more likely I'm just standing there silently so grateful for and amazed by what I just experienced...

Will Siggy noted: "New York crowds are notoriously awful at almost any concert, but I could not believe the lack of enthusiasm or appreciation from the crowd."

I mean this in a completely upbeat, non-confrontational way, but WTF are you talking about?

Having seen multiple hundreds of shows both inside and outside Manhattan I will certainly acknowledge that New York crowds have their own little peculiarities, but to blanket condemn us as "notoriously awful" is just a wee bit silly, no? Speaking for my little corner of the world for the last two amazing nights -- up close in front of Jackie -- we experienced few-to-no loud talkers, drunks, pusher/shover/"my space not your space" Nazis, overly-enthused karaoke bs... no problems. Just a lot of respectful super happy well behaved rocking out adults doing their thing with zero interference from security or anyone else. "Notoriously awful"? Not so much. p.s. extra thanks to forces of nature that arrayed the dwindling percentages of wonderful ladies so disproportionately in our immediate vicinity... you ROCK!

As to the "lack of enthusiasm or appreciation from the crowd" it just goes to show how different humans can be in the same physical space and yet experience the situation as if we were on different planets. On the universal 1-10 deadhead scale of skeptical crusty jadedness I'm maybe a 7, but the band-crowd energy exchange over most parts of the whole run have been quite real and at least theoretically available to anyone who wanted to be paying attention. The second set last night had such a compelling and continuous demand on one's attention that in the immediate moments that follow its like the cigarette-in-bed after amazing sex thing (or at least that moment back in our savage past of cigarette smoking). Phil knows this and surely isn't offended by any pre-programmed protests of our appreciation, given that appreciation was completely self-evident for the preceding several hours. Last night's second set was complete group lock-in, just viscerally thrilling... enthusiasm, appreciation in abundance.

Anyway, just another angle on things.

Last night was awesome, every bit the quality show of this past Monday and easily one of the top two or three of the 50-odd P&F shows I've seen (that didn't involve Trey, which are really just different animals). It wasn't the "best ever, bro" but definitely a great show.

Thanks Phil!

Hey - regarding encores: take a listen to what Bill Graham says at the end of the 4/29/71 show, between the end of the show and the encore - it's on the Fillmore East 1971 cds, disc 4, after casey jones

regarding "like the mon. show i was at. it ended with the fade out of dark star?...it was too weird, too mellow, ...
its just best to end with rockers, leaves a better feel..."

I think it is best not to have preconceptions

I was at the Nov 2 show when Dark Star V2 was the start of the encore - I was actually wishing they had ended the show like that - "shall we go, you and I, through the transitive nightfall of diamonds" and then just let it fade it

Why? Cause it would be something NEW in the broad realm of experiences I've had with this band - that would have been cool!

Now I wish I had been at the monday nov 5 show - i would have dug it

The last show Phil show of the season for me. A highly enjoyable time filled with a lot of dancing, moments of over-the-top energy, a tear-jerkingly poignant sliding 2nd-set moment basked in blue light, some adventurous song placements and an overall ragged-but-right feel.

My friend Steve and I spent the day wandering Manhattan on foot. We went to the new Kerouac exhibit at the main Public Library at 5th and 42nd (steps away from the Nokia, in fact.)
The show features the mythical scroll typed 1st draft of On the Road; 60-feet of it unrolled and visible in a glass case. You could see all of Jack's typos and penciled-in changes! There were tons of other Kerouac notebooks, photos, paintings and sketches on display.
It was inspiring. I 1st read Kerouac early on in high school and he was a big inspiration for my own writing and travels around the country and the world.
Kerouac wrote so much and seemed to publish more than he threw out. There's a lot of mediocre, self-indulgent stuff to wade through. But when he was on, he was on!
I love the myth of Kerouac. He's been a big inspiration, but not reallya role model. I try to tap into the same child-like enthusiasm and wonder for the world that drove his work, but I also try to learn from his mistakes. Kerouac is one of the reasons I don't do drugs or drink. Cirrhosis at 47. He was amazing. But perhaps he could've been even more...

Some his descriptions of the improvisational excitement of jazz shows could be about Phil shows! There's a passage from Desolation Angels, that also appears on the spoken word Kerouac box set, that captures the edge of your seat excitement of peak P&F improvisation.
Since all the members of the Dead seemed to be fans of the Beats, I half-expected to see Phil and Jill wandering together through the glass cases of Kerouac's papers. Of course I didn't
But after seeing a number of pictures, letters from, and references to Neal Cassidy, I figured we'd at least get an Other One tonight with its mention of "Cowboy Neal..." Besides, statistically I think we were about due for one. But with Phil, statistics often get thrown out the window...

Pre-show at the Nokia I ran into a couple folks from past tours who I haven't seen in a while: Jay who was manning the Wharf Rats table. I got to sleep on his parents' lawn before the Phil/GRAB show at Hartford in July '06. I also ran into Cleveland Jill who I danced with at one of my all time favorite Phil shows 11/30/03 at the Tower with the Q. I hadn't seen Jill since the final Phish tour rolled through the SPAC in 2004. It was great to hug and chat again.!

Tonight's show started a bit late. I think the other 3 nights of this run that I saw started right at 8:15. But Saturday's show didn't get started until around 8:45. Standing on the floor, I wondered if they were waiting for a special guest to arrive or if they were tweaking the setlist, adding in some surprise.
At one point Jackie came out and sat at Molo's drums, tapping the drums with brushes and munching on a banana.
As they were coming onto the stage, Jill Lesh fluffed up the hair of the Jerry doll that sits on Jackie's side. Then she fluffed up Phil's hair (which was cut earlier this week, so no more shaggy pseudo-mullet!) Jill and Phil kissed. Even from towards the back of the floor I could see Phil and Jill were both giddy, all contagious smiles.
Jill also gave Jackie a kiss on the cheek before he came out from behind the amps
The crowd was getting restless so when the boys came out, I was glad they got right down to business. Without much noodling or milling about they fired into Good Lovin'--- Jackie on vocals and Molo's tom drums sounding amazing, resonating through the hall, everyone dancing. I was hoping for a little drum break a la the GD Pigpen versions but it never happened. Jackie threw in some Bobby-esque vocals about even the blind man knowing when the sun is shining. But thank goodness there was no "hey-HEY!"s or flying spit histrionics.
Good Lovin' seemed a bit short, but it definitely got the blood flowing.

Larry got his fiddle and Jackie got his acoustic and they played a good FOTD. There was a high energy jam out of FOTD. Larry and Jackie both switched to electric guitars, though Larry used an effect throughout the set that made his lines sound sort-of fiddle-esque even while on guitar. I caught myself looking over to him a number of times to confirm that he was still actually playing a guitar.
Here in Deadhead land we often call any sort of instrumental that's not a recognizable song "a jam" but ever since I've been seeing Phil (since 2001) I get the sense that "instrumental interlude" is a more accurate description of some of these ">" passages. Between FOTD and the following the JGe tune there was one of those interludes. It had an identity of of it own, not really related to the songs it was between. But it was obvious from Phil's talking via the monitors and the way that the band hit changes in unison that this wasn't a "jam" in the GD sense of the word. It was at least semi-pre-concieved
Anyway the jam/interlude sounded good and led into Jackie's "Spots of Time." I really like his songs. I think I'm gonna get some of his albums. If he has time off from the Friends, I hope he tours with his solo band. I'm curious to see how he does the songs when he's the full leader of the band and I'd love to see him in a really small venue.
Jackie must be living a dream now. He went from virtually unknown last year to playing 10 sold-out nights in NYC singing lead on over 1/2 the songs and bringing 1-5 songs of his own per night into the set lists.

Larry switched to pedal steel and SoT fell into Dire Wolf. It was a good version. I wanted the pedal steel to be louder. It was certainly audible, it just lacked the high sweet sharp clarity that it had in Boston during the 10/9 Pride of Cuc.
Anyway, Dire Wolf was well played and concise.
I wonder how much of the sound quality has to do with individual audiene positioning. Someone mentioned earlier on this thread the difference in sound quality he experienced between sitting down and standing up towards the back half of the venue.
For this show, I was even with Phil about 2/3 back on the floor. I didn't get the same bone-shaking bass sound that i experienced the previoud two nights when I was positioned maybe 10-15 feet closer to the stage. I wonder if such a small change in my coordinates could have had such a big effect on the sound or if Mr. Lesh had just twiddled with his knobs.

Operator was fun to hear, but it seemed a tad rough. Phil did the vocals, though I thought maybe someone else should've handled them. The boys weren't quite together on the ending.

BIODTL followed without the GD style "beats" at the beginning. (Y'know the "dut-dut-dut-dut" part that could involve up tp 50 "duts". One time in the GD era the number of "duts" matched the age of someone in the band since it was his birthday. I think they should do a 27 "beat" intro for Jackie's golden birthday show.)
Larry handled he lead vocals. Jackie played organ, doing a B3 sound using his Leslie amp. He had the Brent sound and it came across distinct from the more piano-like sound that Molitz stuck to for the song.)

BIODTL was a great sing-a-long time. But having two short free-standing songs next to each other (Operator +BIODTL) towards the end of the set sort of slowed momentum for me.

Well if the enery dipped at all, the set-closing Shakedown picked it back up. This is the only time I can remember Shakedown as a set-closer. Even in the pretty fluid world of Phil setlists, it seems to be pretty exclusively in the 1st or 2nd set opener slot. It appeared mid 2nd set back with the Q 7/20/02 in Camden but off the top of my head I can't think of any other position variations
(which makes me long for a "Phil Base" searchable database of all the stats of P&F a la Deadbase-- frequency, number of times played etc. Is there anything like that out there on the net?)

Anyway, Shakedown was a great version and I liked it in the set closing position! Molitz got to bring in some space-porn keyboard weirdness. Molo got to kick the heavy 4/4 and Jack and Larry got to play the scratchy funk. And we in the crowd got to shout "wooo!"
The end of the song featured a sort of vocal jam akin to some of the hot GD versions. Phil's vocals during this had a rap-like quality to it. The vocal jam (with each of the singers repeating little fragments of the Shakedown lyrics) didn't quite reach its potential. I got the feeling that they're still just trying it out. It has great potential to bring a great climax to the tune with a little bit of practice coordination and extension.
As someone else on here noted, Shakedown was hot but it should've been longer. Ever since first hearing Shakedown with the Q I always feel that band could've rode the groove for another 5+ minutes still keeping it funky and engaging and keeping the crowd dancing.
Still, I'm happy for the disco funk that we did get. It closed the set on a great note: A fat Phil bomb if I remember correctly!

Coltrane was been the pre-show and set break music for all the Nokia shows I saw. I love 'Trane but was getting a little frustrated after hearing Impressions and Naima for the 4th-5th time. But for this setbreak we got "Ascension"!--- later-period free molten psychedelia that seemed to promise the same from the stage for the second set!

And the boys delievered in a ragged-but-right musical adventure that brought with it a few unxpected turns, a few sour notes and a lot of energy and smiles.

The set started with a jam (or a perhaps a semi-composed instrumental) into China Cat.
I really enjoy the unison riffing of Jackie an Larry on this tune.

The Philzone setlist at the time of posting doesn't show an arrow, but China Cat certainly went right into Jack Straw.
I was surprised to hear it. Has P&F played this before with the current line up? This was the only time I caught it on this tour.
Instrumentally it was good, but the vocals were probably the weakest of the night. There wasn't a mess-up of the words or missed vocal entrances, the vocals just sounded flat and tuneless. No one seemed to be carrying the melody. It seemed like P/J/L were trying for some sort of 3 part harmony but failed. Still, the instrumental sections saved the tune from its vocal weaknesses. Despite the number of times I've heard this song in GD and post-Gd versions I forget how hot it gets mid-song during the "we used to play for silver..." part.
And the guys delivered here. Perhaps frustrated by their vocal shortcomings they decided to pour even more energy into singing with their guitars.

Th song melted into a jam that hung in a floating spacey place that hinted at the Wheel. The band goes to this place between songs with some frequency, but they don't always actually end up playing the Wheel.

But we got a Wheel this time. A good version, though it lacked the between verse Phil bombs that often get dropped in this song. But as I stated earlier, maybe I missed out on the bombs because of my position on the floor.

In the jam after Wheel, the tempo slowed dramatically. In classical terms, we might call it a "retard." Things got spacey. before picking up again. I thought here was where we were gonna get the Other One. But instead we got

Eyes of the World. The strumming intro seemed a bit different tonight. I dunno if it was tenchically "off" or if Phil was just injecting some more weirdness into the mix.
Well once the vocals started, this turned int a great version. I truly worked up a sweat dancing. And the folks around me on the floor were dancers too, so space opened up and no one minded too much when I occasionally stepped on their toes or knocked heads with them in my whirling dervish attempt to get down and be one with Larry's guitar lines.
He kept playing brilliant solo after birlliant solo with the energy and temperature rising!

At the end of Eyes, Phil took a pseudo solo as the melody started to dissipate. i thought maybe this would lead the way to a 10/19/74 style post-Eyes jam. But Phil took things down pretty quickly. For a moment I thought "Death Don't" was coming because Jackie had switched to organ, but then Phil began playing the Stella intro.

The Stella instrumental that followed was delicate, beautiful, and the emotional highlight of the evening for me. The stage was bathed in blue light. Larry's pedal steel was a perfect choice to lead this tune. On Stella, Larry achieved the loudness and clarity I'd hoped he'd have gotten on the pedal steel during the first set's Dire Wolf. For Stella, he seemed to be using a lot of reverb and it just filled the theatre with a beautifully sad yet somehow still joyous warm moan. And Jackie's organ lines meshed perfectly with Larry's pedal steel, creating an angelic drone.
Larry's pedal steel reminded me of a beautiful slide guitar style that Bobby used during the end of one of my favorite GD Stellas: 6/16/93 at Freedom Hall in KY.

After a few minutes I wondered if we'd get any vocals, though I remembered reading that an earlier version on this tour was played instrumental. And when thet got to the "I've stayed in every blue light cheap hotel" bridge and still no one had stepped to the mic, it was clear that this was gonna stay an instrumental. And that I think the lack of vocals is what made this version so perfect.
This seemed to be the most overt Jerry tribute of the night, highlighting his absence from the physical world. But I also thought of it as a Vince Welnick tribute. I remember hearing tapes of Vince's Missing Man Formation doing Stella as an instrumental back in 1996. Despite taking good-natured jabs at Vince here on the Zone back in the day, his suicide last year was very sad. No one should ever have to feel so alone that they resort to such desperate measures.
Phil might have not particularly liked Vince's playing with the Dead, but with his big heart I'm sure Phil never wanted him to take his own life.
But I'm digressing. Whoever the song was for, it was beautiful!

It was too early for set end, but I wasn't sure how the boys could follow Stella.
There was no real jam out of Stella. Phil brought it down to a full stop and then immediately the guitars chimed in with

the St. Stephen intro. Phil contrasted the sadness of Stella with the sing-along psychedelic celebration that is St. Stephen. Me and all the folks around me were dancing hard for this one.
This version seemed a bit ragged, as every post-Q version has seemed to me. But there were no real flubs and the raggedness lends a fun raw energy. And there are lots of weird changes in this tune to get slipped up on.

There was no "William Tell" bridge but a raging "Eleven" followed. I sort of thought they'd save it for the next night (since Sunday was 11/11!) Since I read that the last Eleven they played, with vocals, was filled with flubs it's probably best that they just kept it instrumental and concentrated on playing lines in that odd and beautiful "1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2-3 1-2" 11/4 pattern.
Larry seemed a bit confused on when and how to do the rhythmic/melodic shift that usually happens in this song. Phil and Jackie locked eyes with Larry. Larry had a sheepish grin on his face and didn't seem to make the shift the first time around, but eventually he fell into line.
Eleven came almost down to a full stop.

And then the Help on the Way intro hit me by surprise! The band was certainly ragged on this one, especially on the intro. But everbody seemed to fall in line after the first couple verses.

Slipknot was great. Some interesting Molitz sounds. It was more focused than the long ragged-but-right Camden 10/12 version that I dubbed "slip-up/knot" Some hot solos were taken. Molo took his mini solos in the outro and we all were ready for Franklins but we got something else.

I wasn't expecting this rocker so it look me a minute to recognize that it was One More Saturday Night, with no Bobby in sight!
High energy hard-dancing fun, with Jackie doing spirited vocals.
I figured this was gonna be the set closer and then Franklins would be the encore. But there was a twist!

One More Saturday Night came to a nearly a full stop as Phil charged into Franklin's Tower. The solos were good and he belted this one with Molitz adding some "roll away" vocal responses near the end
And since this was the last night of the tour for me, I danced with all the energy i had left, wearing my incongruous Iron Maiden t-shirt.

After the boys left the stage, the happy yet exhausted feeling and exclamations of "what just hit us?" seemed to sweep through the crowd.

As it's been discussed earlier in this thread, yes the "encore" is a ritualized occurence these days for pretty much any band, especially jam bands. It's not the spontaneous gift of 'just a little bit more" that encores probably started out as years before any of us were born.

I didn't cheer hard before the encore because I was exhausted after a day of exploring Manhattan on foot and dancing to Phil at night. Maybe i do take the encores a bit for granted. But Box of Rain was a sweet little coda for the evening.

Phil ended it how he did in Baltimore, replacing the final "there" in the song with a bass bomb to end the evening.

With the tour just about over and Phil at 67 years old, I wonder if I'll see him again.

I hope so, but if not I have years of tapes, discs, stubs, and photos from 35+ Phil shows to remind me of one the greatest extended musical adventures of my life!

Thanks everyone for making it such an enjoyable tour.

regarding "An instrumental Stella! OMFG. I 'm not sure if it was that it got to the point where only Jerry could have come in so they let it lie or if they had it planned that way the whole time. I'm inclined to think they had it planned because there was something very unusual about it right from the opening notes. "

It was all about the absence of Jerry, if you ask me. Larry played pedal steel and Jackie played the B-3. THERE WAS NO GUITAR AND NO SINGING - it isn't accidental. It was all about creating a space where everything was present, except Jerry - it felt kind of like a seance, if you ask me.

Phil and Kimock played an instrumental Stella back in '99 or 2000 at the PHILmore that was similar to what you are describing, Grubby. Purposeful in it's simplicity and absolutely tear-inducing, especially so soon after Jerry's passing and the beginning of Phil and Friends. I can remember it like it was yesterday.

...and Kimock was also on pedal steel, and if my memory serves me, the only song he ever used it for.

also regarding "Since I read that the last Eleven they played, with vocals, was filled with flubs"

I relistened to Live/Dead and the 11/3 St. Stephen from last week - and I am convinced that is was not "a flub" People who thought that missed the art of what was going on.

The only lines that are missing are the ones that Jerry sang on Live/Dead by himself - I'm convinced now that it was deliberate on Phil's part - he could easily have given those lines to Jackie, but he choose not to.

It seems to me that Phil is consistently honoring Jerry in new and different ways, all we have to do is pay attention.

also "After the boys left the stage, the happy yet exhausted feeling and exclamations of "what just hit us?" seemed to sweep through the crowd. "

Yeah, that's exactly how I felt too - I think the dynamics of this setlist - with an energetic china cat and jack straw, slowing down into eyes and then totally getting mellow into stella blue (did you notice that EVERYONE in the seats was sitting down during stella - that's pretty rare) - and then rising again through st. stephen/eleven into Help - it was just a great roller coaster ride.

For me, the peak was during Slipknot though, that was the highest energy point, long drawn out with a great solo by larry. You might guess that Saturday night or Franklin's Tower would be the peak, cause they are great rockers (and they were hot) but it was during Slipknot when the tachometer hit the red zone, at least for me

There was something about this show that set it apart from the others - and I think it was the dynamic shifts of pace and energy during the second set.

I just have to say, this is my second post on this amazing night. After 74 GD shows and tons of Phish, Phil, ratdog and you name it, this show ranks personally in my top 5 of all time. One day later I am still in utter awe. This was one for the ages. It might be the last for me, too, as we never know where things will go from here. For anyone out there reading or wondering what this show was really like: words can not say enough. The vibe, the love, the gelling spirit of the music, and the people dancin with me were all right on. This show was off the hook. If I never see another show again, this would be the way to go out. It put a period and an excaimation point at the end of a 20 year bus ride. This si something to feed off for the next few moths, weeks or years. I feel I can go back to my life and son, and my work with a greater sense of fullfillment. I have been "re-calibrated" if you will. Maybe this was differen for others, but for me it was dream. .."such a long long time to be gone, and a short time to be there...

just taking a night to reflect. great show...this was my first time seeing this incarnation of P & F. I was really surprised by Molitz' contribution, thought he was phenomenal and way into it. Love Jackie's take on all the material -- caught him channeling his inner Bob (Dylan and Weir!) more than once -- gives the material a nice fresh polish. Phil looks, sounds great, still has a great sense of song selection, Molo is molo which = consistently solid and brilliant. I am fully aware and respectful of LC's resume and chops, and he serves the stuff well -- but he seems woefully stiff to me. Once Trey cleans up for good??

Lot's of quality cowboy shitkickin' in the first set with a raging BIODTL, loved the arrangements when Jackie went to the Hammond, terrifc, rockin' shakedown (the NYC nod after all the country stompin'?) and the entire 2nd set was inspired, high energy, punch holes in the sky type stuff.

Nokia's nice -- save for the few knuckleheads that were overserved and the few meatheads hassling us about the kindness -- a real nice vibe with killer sound. thx Phil!

all that said, i am ready for the four boys to get back together, grab hornsby and trey and ride the dragon from here to the end...

Dear Phil
Thank you for a wonderful, happy show last night - it was a major grinfest for me. Larry, Jackie, John and Steve (and Ryan) - what a groove thing you had going on every night that I was there. It was the grinniest, danciest time. Though I miss and love the Beacon, I appreciate the hospitality of the Nokia workers and the plush setting. Truthfully I did not miss keeling over from the heat in the last row of the loge at the Beacon - I am not so young any more.

Anyone who rips on last night (11/10/07) was not "there". We were between 3-5 people back in front of Larry. Location is everything but we listened to some tapes tonight much further back from the stage in my kitchen, and I was reliving some of the grinning from NYC. How many things in life are "instant replay - feel good" like that? It was effortless to feel the energy and love.

It was my 28th "PL/BW/MH" show; regretably I never saw the Grateful Dead. The "phans" that are critical of this band, the setlist or any individual piece of the show have no idea how lucky they are; I wish them a bigger sense of gratitude. How will the harsh critics feel when there is no more PLF? Since I am not looking for vestiges of something from >10 years ago - I could not be happier to have enjoyed this chapter, Nov 2007 of the legend.

Rock on Phil and Friends, preferably in the metro area, real real soon.

All I can say was it was epic. I was stunned by the second set, and so moved I wanted to write Phil a thank you letter. I could not have asked for a better show. Did anyone else hear dark star teased before St Stephen? As I read the reviews the instrumental Stella came floating through my mind and it makes me smile, and know that somewhere Jerry is too.

It's in there, yes (I just checked) but I don't think I noticed it at the time.

I was surprised by the lack of excitement when the second set started. I also thought after Box, there might be another song, but the crowd was just not into it.

Maybe the accoustics of the place absorb sound so well, we just could not hear it as loud as normal.

>>>which makes me long for a "Phil Base" searchable database of all the stats of P&F a la Deadbase-- frequency, number of times played etc. Is there anything like that out there on the net?)

Agreed. If anybody could do it it's the folks right here at the Zone. They have everything. Nice job.
