New Riders of the Purple Sage
Mystic Theatre
Petaluma, Ca

I'll start with a brief word about Scarecrow, he opened again, I only caught the end of it, sounded the same as GAMH and I think once was enough.

Overall, this show was much better than Wednesday...bigger crowd crowd helped but ultimately it was just a good night, the band was firing on all cylinders. It did help that Buddy was focused, no pesky broken strings to change and tune mid-song...Buddy was having a great night last night. Also helped that the second set stretched out, no getting cut short last night!

Set 1:

Dead Flowers
Contract
I Don't Know You
Lonesome LA Cowboy
*?????*
Higher
Last Lonely Eagle w/Bob Matthews, bass
*?????* w/Gary Vorg
Sing Me A Rainbow w/Gary Vorg, guitar
Henry
15 Days Under the Hood

Set 2:
Watcha Gonna Do
Groupie w/Gary Vorg, guitar
Lo and Behold
Peggy-O w/Barry Sless, guitar
Truck Driving Man w/Barry Sless, guitar
Garden of Eden>Last Time>Garden of Eden w/Barry Sless, guitar
Sliding Delta w/Barry Sless, guitar
Any Naked Eye w/Barry Sless, guitar
Louisana Lady
Panama Red
Take a Letter Maria

E: This Land is Your Land w/Barry and Gary, both guitar

The whole show was high energy but Barry Sless's appearance really took it to another level, The songs were repeats from wednesday night, oddly enough they were the "broken string" songs. It was nice to hear them given the full treatment from both Buddy and Barry...definitely made up for the lack luster show earlier in the week.

At one point my knee needed to sit, I took a seat upstairs behind the soundboard to hear Scarecrow mutter 'Another Damn Tele...' That was Gary, Scarecrow might not have liked it but the triple Tele attack sounded just fine to me!

I'll have to say again, Ronnie is doing a great job holding down the low end! I really look forward to more of him in the future, whatever project it may be.

Loved the Take a Letter it was an energetic high point for sure, along with 15 Days, they had the room a-rockin! The This Land encore was sweet, seen it on Nelson setlists before, but this was the first one I'd seen, makes for a nice ending to the show, the pit even broke into a little round of ring around the rosie...it can't be bad if there's mass spontaneous hand holding!

and last but not least, SLESS IS MORE!!! :-O

I was in Tele heaven!!! Loved it. :-)

...in fact, that whole show could have been a Fender advertisement, with all the Teles, Fender Twins, and the Precision bass.

I learned about Dave's new Tele last night. It's full of levers and springs. Now I understand what it is that makes his guitar playing so quirky.

Nice review Emily! Looks like a great show - especially the portion with Sless sitting in. . .
