Ray Davies and his band played an incredible high energy show this past Friday evening at the Warfield. This show sold better than I expected as the lower level and balcony was nicely full of a nice bunch of 40 and 50ish aged folks - old rockers and their ladies in their vintage black t shirts, leather pants, and long styled hair. They had tables in the sections that were up off the pit. Davies was touring in support of his new CD Working Man's Cafe, which unfortunatley was not available for purchase at the gig. In fact, for a guy who was touring for the CD it was interesting that he wasn't selling any merch. Despite that, many folks sang along with the new songs which demonstrated just how devoted his legion of fans are. Opening the show with I'm Not Like Anybody Else, Davies started the tune solo playing an electric guitar. By the second verse his band joined him giving him an explosive backing on this tune as well as the others that made up a solid two set show. Each Kinks song played was met with the sounds of most everyone in the house singing along. Not that Ray doesn't encourage it either as this is a ritual going back to the lofty days of one of Britain's beloved Kinks. Always a student of both vaudville and pop music schick, Davies brought the crowd in from the first note. Featuring the band that was the same as his last swing through San Francisco last year and was definatley road tuned, Davies was masterful all evening and the new tunes sounded well played along side the Kinks classics. I particulary dug the version of 20th Century Man where Ray began the song slowly with the bridge before allowing the band to rock out. Ray also paid tribute to The Warfield mentioning before "Well Respected Man," that this would be the last time that he'd be playing the song here at the Warfield. The thing that I always dug about Davies and The Kinks were the socially oriented lyrics and messages, of with the new material was also cut from the same cloth. If you look at the setlist you know why many came home from this show hoarse from singing loudly for a good hour or so. All and all a very solid show that touched down on just enough classics interspersed with great new tunes that reminded everyone that Ray Davies remains one of the most gifted songwrters and front men of any generation. But if I could offer one suggestion it would be to make the new CD more easily available to the fans, many of whome had to pay import prices for the privalege of enjoying the new stuff. Hey Ray, where's your merch table?

God Save The Kinks!!

Great show by Mr Davies. It wasn't the Kinks but the band was tight and sound really good on the classics as well as the new songs. You beat me to the review so I'll just give you these.

God Save The Kinks!!

Here's the bit torrent up on dime. Read the taper notes, it's a bit muffled but still listenable :-)

Ray has still got it. That's all I need to say about his performance.

I had fat women dancing on my feet. There was one guy with his 2 kids that was encouraging the boy to push his way up.
Normally I wouldn't have minded but this kid had the biggest head. A surprisingly obnoxious crowd up front.

I was standing on the floor and had my mics clipped at waist level. It sounds muffled
and I tried to clean it up. You may want to EQ it to your own personal taste.

This review and the others I've read make it sound like Mr. Davies is kicking some major ass.
Excellent.
I'm getting really psyched to see him in New York next week.
One of the all time greats for sure.
Good to hear he is bringing it still.
