Howdy folks- here's a brief review for you-

We live in Seattle, a 30 minute drive from the venue, and figured we'd get there at 4:30 to catch the shuttle from the parking lot to the "amphitheater" and be there in plenty of time to catch Phil's first set and maybe part of Moe.

That was our first mistake! Actually it wasn't a mistake- it was a proper assumption- Phil would play at- what- 6:30PM? 2 hours should be plenty of time to get from the parking lot to the venue right?

WRONG! The promoter screwed up BIG TIME! We got in line for the shuttle at 4:30 and got on the friggin' bus at 7PM!!!! The driver said they had 10 buses ready to go but the promoter sent 4 of them back to save a few bucks- so 6 buses carried 6,000 people... go figure.

Well, when we finally got through the segregated-by-sex search lines to get in (which consisted of "got any food or water?" when I had a big jug of water and a bag of food right in front of the guy- and we enjoyed our OWN goddam food all night!)we heard Phil & the boys jamming like only they do.... talk about disappointment!

I asked some guys near the shitter how long they'd been playing- we'd missed about half of the first set! We did, howerever, walk in right before Dear Mr Fantasy- which was big 'n crunchy. At this point people were still lined up back at the parking lot (drinking beer in the sun with no supply of water) for an average of 2 1/2 to 3 hours! Many folks never made it in until the set break- and the promoter was charging a hefty $10 day-of-show surcharge on tickets sold at a make-shift box office in the parking lot!

More on next post....

Well- it took a few minutes to shake off the frustration with the "infrastructure crap"- and once I focused on the tunes it flowed... the stage was set beautifully at the lower end of a cleared field on a ridge surrounded with dense pine forest- behind the stage was a view up the Snoqualmie valley to the Cascade mountains- with Mt. Si positioned perfectly to the left of the stage with it's multiple rocky peaks and couloirs.

The sky was amazing- with multi-colored clouds forming the most beautiful expansive dome over us- when you looked around all you could see were trees, mountains, and sky.

More to follow....

A guy in the tapers section next to us was doing the "sky dance" all night- man, that guy coulda whipped heavy cream if you'd plunked him into a big vat of it!

The show itself was an average one for these guys- nice tune selection, and pleasing to hear the familiar segue from Scarlet into Fire! There was a moment late in Scarlet before the last verse when the jam bulged and a few stitches popped on the seam- it went into the great beyond for just a moment- a tiny glimpse of what was to follow later in the second set...

After a long-ass set break, during which it cooled down about 25 degress (Warren commented "who turned off the heat?" as they took the stage) The boys returned with a nice little jam and then romped into a nicely-paced St Stephen (usually they play everything too fast for me). They executed it really well and had a very cool, polyrythmic jam into The Eleven and back- The Eleven rocked hard! The jam back into Stephen was a bit lame- Phil had to play the lick several times before the other guys picked up on it... oh well, can't be psychic all the time!

And then?

What the hell is that? Neil Young! A fun, sarcastic, 4th of July song- keep on Rockin' in the free world- wish Warren's vocals had been up a little more- but got the idea from the lyrics I could hear- a fun romp through the radio hit, with all the local rednecks whoopin' it up...

Beautifully Broken is a great song with kind of cheesy lyrics- the grooves and changes in it though make you listen (not to mention Warren's voice)-

I need to cut to the chase here- VIOLA LEE BLUES!!!! Oh my Gawd! It started all regular-like, with great harmonies and an average jam after 1st verse- but let me tell you- the jam between 2nd & 3rd verse took everyone on the time machine- Holy Shit!!!!

(it really was holy- they had stained glass images all over the backdrop)- I'm calling it the "Stained Glass Roller Coaster" jam- and what a roller coaster ride it was!

It started with Rob getting jazzy wid it and popping more threads off the seam- with Warren and Jimmy jumping in fast on mad, crazed slides and Phil thunder runs up & down the neck- anyone remeber the old Octapus blotter from about 1986 or '87?- These guys must have saved some! And it just kept going. And it just kept getting more and more intense- at an intensity level of a raging crash & burn space jam but they stayed with it as an ensemble and it just FLOWED! The Seam had ripped wide open at this point and the power of the almighty music lovin' god of jams was just pouring through them like a dam burst and we were all downstream- nowhere to go- we just ride!

That jam was the golden nugget for me- I forgot about the tension and stress of the bus ride, I forgot about missing half of the first set, I forgot that my girl & I were'nt connecting well, I just shivered and screamed at that big sky...

No need to talk about the end- it was average after that- we left before Dancin' to catch the first buses back- but man! I drove home a weary dude.

And that's all!

have fun in Red Rocks y'all :)

Great review pinman! That Viola was out of this world smokin'! Good call on bailing early cause the bus scene was a major fiasco. We were jammed in like cattle for atleast an hour and a half before finally getting on the bus. What a joke. Beautiful venue but those guys need to get their shit together. Tough to be at work today after not getting back until after 3am.

I know this is off the subject but I saw that P+F played Whiskey In a Jar during Spring Tour. This is a great tune. I heard Jerry do a partial version of this on the 'So Many Roads' compilation during a Dead rehersal. Does anyone know who sung the lyrics with P+F?

That was an amazing show though on the setlists for set 2 >THE GOLDEN ROAD and VIOLA LEE werent mentioned much and the DANCIN IN THE STREETS encore which seemed an odd choice but fun nevertheless. That was absolutely some of the best music I have heard in a long time and I am envious of those who are going to the Ratdog/Phil shows >lotta good music there.
I think if I woulda dosed last night Id be on tour :) SICK FOOKIN JAMS OF BLISSING GROOVEDNESS AND LIGHT!!!!!!!!

Thanks, pinman. Just a note about what went before
you arrived:

We too were caught in the bus mess at the parking
lot. Managed to get in just as P+F were taking the
stage. There were a few bars of Stars & Stripes
forever before US Blues. The jam from US Blues to
Celebrations was phenomenal.

Also should be noted: the "Broadway" jam in the
Scarlet > Fire segue.

THE SETS IF MEMORY IS RIGHT

SET 1) US BLUES, CELEBRATION, MR FANTASY (wicked good jams) > SCARLET > FIRE (hot as hell fire)

SET 2)(like a 10 minute jam intro that was Darkstaresque and then POP) ST STEPHEN > ELEVEN > ST STEPHEN (good freaking lord holy mother of all sick jams, was some of the best music I have ever experienced) ROCKIN IN THE FREE WORLD (ehh odd choice, but fun, never thought Id hear that) DEAL, BEAUTIFULLY BROKEN, THE GOLDEN ROAD (wicked good, intense bizarre heavyass superjam there) VIOLA LEE BLUES (and just when you thought the jams were on fire, the fire got hotter)
* ENCORE: DANCIN IN THE STREETS

shuttle buses for 6000 people BAD IDEA /
Earl, I think we built the parking lot to far from the venue. Whattya mean it is only a 10 minute drive.

Please let me know if any of you all come across this show, I would love a copy! Have trades.

Yeah- I only saw the last 2 songs of moe. I didn't come across anyone who saw all of moe. They were all stuck in line! They only played for 1 hour, so don't think it was as good as a moe show where they get to play 3 hours or something.

Pinman had that Viola Lee right on the money! Perfectly described. Definately the highlight of second set. I thought Fantasy was the best song of 1st set- nice hot jam in the middle. Kind of weird hearing US blues as the 1st set opener, and Dancin' as the Encore, but it was cool. There's almost no "rules" anymore as to what songs are played for 1st set, 2nd set, or the encore. You always had an idea with the Dead, but with P & F (and ratdog) you never know anymore.

Unfortunately, I was at the front (10' from stage), and waited until the very end to leave. After waiting in the line for about an hour, I said f@#! this line. I went to the left and cut into the trees- took a long leak- hiked down out of the trees at the front of the line. I know it was cutting, but I was by myself, ran out of whiskey 2 hours ago, and was burned out. Glad I did it- probably cut an hour off my wait! What a joke. Oh well- glad I made it anyways.

The riff I kept hearing throughout the night was from
"Tears of a Clown"... IIRC, I first noticed it in "Dear Mr.
Fantasy" (in between the "Hey Jude" and Eleanor
Rigby" teases").

Great show! Lovely venue. Security was even great
(i.e. invisible) -- not uptight as is the norm for most WA
shows I've seen. Buses did suck however. And the staff
down in the lot was misinformed -- they said no
camers, so I left my disposable in the car, but up at the
gate it said no *removable-lens* cameras. Bummer.

This show in my opinion was stellar! The teasing the jams and the balls-to-the-wall rock-n-roll talent left me speechless.
the Viola Lee was incredable (atoms spliting and shit) I cant wait to hear the dat (I know a taper who taped it). After the sound experiance in Eugene this was a needed performance for me as I could only break away for these two shows.
Back to the sound. This was some of the best out door sound Iv heard in a while, most of the time there are noise ordinances. It was nice to be able to feel the kick drum hit me in the chest. This was the loudest I have heard these guys, Im a sound guy and IT WAS LOUD! I actualy spoke with John Cutler and asked what the clicking noise was in Eugene, he said it was one of Phils efect prossesers overheating. Didnt ask about the complete power shutdown. If this was done by the venu, for curfew reasons that is unexcuzable that could fuck-up a whole system.
But back to Snoqualmi, What a beautiful venue, the view was breathtaking!
The bus thing was horrible, I waited for two hours to get on this bus with this driver that was barking out orders on how to make his life easy!? Then we get back to the lot and the cops are doing lot sweeps(if you have ever been to the east coast this is how they do it.) with their lights twirling, and there was 3000 people still stuck in the venue waiting for those FUCKING Buses. Not only did they have that screwed up but when the buses pulled up to pick us up and they tried to turn around in one shot they couldnt they had to do this silly back and forth kind of jig. A couple of drivers were able to negotiate and were met with a cheer from 5000 tired hippies. One bus load of people actualy mooned us:-) I would encourage everyone to e-mail this promoter with your complaints so may be he or she will have to get their shit together. The bottom line is someone is going to get hurt. Lets face it P&F doesnt have a super rowdy crowd. Imagine If that was a but-rock show those fences would have been tourn down and buses over turned.
And if any Phil Lesh management reads this please dont do buisness with these people, they dont care about your best customers.

"Broadway" was definately noodled on in at least one set II jam, and pieces of other stuff was popping up all over the place for me...thought I heard Bertha coming up; Stella Blue was almost played I'm convinced...

I did catch Moe. They were entertaining. They had a couple nice moments in their jams. They also had one jam just totally fizzle out into nothing, which judging by the musicians' reactions wasn't quite what they wanted! And Warren came out and played a couple tunes with them -- the first one didn't really feel like Warren got the groove with them very much. The second one was much better -- though for the life of me can't recall the name of the tune. I was entertained, and apparantly made a good choice in getting that early shuttle. If that's a good show for Moe. though I wouldn't bother catching them next time they're in town, unless they're opening for someone.

I too heard a Stella tease for a brief second. Almost a hint of Darkstar as well. Broadway wasn't just noodled with- the melody was played note for note!

I too got screwed with the camera thing. I left mine in my truck, not wanting to deal with having to put it back, but then I saw everyone with them inside. Oh well. That was some of the best security I've seen (best for us alcoholics and druggies!). I smuggled in a bottle whiskey with ease. No security was confiscating drugs or anything during the show. The worst I've seen was at the Gorge- Phil & Dylan 2000. I lost count of how many bags I saw confiscated. They must of had a hundred pounds of mushrooms and weed by the end. Total BS. Anyways just a warning about the Gorge. Great place- shitty security. Later-

Some random thoughts on 7/4...

I took my 12 year-old son Jason to the show, I figure I have to battle the mindless musical drek kids get exposed to somehow. Not knowing where the place was, we left plenty early for what turned out to be an hour's drive. We had some time to kill before the lot opened so we hung out at an elementary school down the street for an hour or so (as did a lot of other folks). We went ahead and hit the lot right when it opened and caught the first, half-full shuttle bus. Clearly these people did not have their act together as there was mass confusion about whether backpacks were allowed, sand chairs, etc. (My favorite "rule" about the chairs inside the venue was "you can't sit in them before the show, but it's OK once the music starts"). Huh?

The next groups of people arriving had tales of a nightmare back in the parking lot, so in retrospect I'm really glad we made that first bus.

The venue itself was beautiful...just a grassy area surrounded by forests and a great view of the mountains behind the stage. We set ourselves up in the sweet spot soundwise, about 25-30ft back right in the center.

moe started 15 minutes early, which was fine by us. Never have heard anything by them before, and overall I thought they were OK. Some of the jamming seemed a tad forced, but certainly had some nice grooves. Warren sat in for their last two tunes, one was apparently a moe tune and the second was "Feelin Allright" - made famous by Joe Cocker but written by Dave Mason while he was with Traffic. Jason ambled off to buy one of their CDs when they were done.

Phil comments in my next post.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Eric Salmassy (Baseballfan) on Friday, July 06, 2001 - 01:33 am: Edit Post

moe finished at 6:00, and by 6:40 the stage had been readied for Phil. The boys huddled behind Molo's drums for a bit, then ambled onstage. Rob played a verse of "Stars and Stripes Forever" with a little help from Warren, and then they launched into (appropriately for the 4th of July) US Blues. Good crunchy fun. That melted into a tasty jam, and I was very interested in watching how Phil directs the band, issuing comments through his mic that can only be heard onstage. This was the first time I've seen Phil (although I've put my DSL to good use downloading a boatload of their shows) and it was an interesting contrast to the no-one-in-charge method of the Dead. Anyway, the jam worked its way into Celebration. While I like the main riff from this song, overall it just hasn't gelled for me yet. More nice jamming out of that into a downright nasty Dear Mr Fantasy. If this place had a roof they'd have blown it off. Outstanding. More jamming followed (Tears of a Clown teases everywhere, I must have heard it at least four or five times over the course of the show) and a very nice Scarlet/Fire/Scarlet to close the set. Overall I'd rate is as very good based on the shows I've heard recordings of. I clocked the set at about 75 minutes...so 5 songs, 75 minutes, well you can do the math :-)

At the set break we decided to move towards the back and find a slightly more relaxed space for the 2nd set. (we had a guy set up in front of us for most of the first set who was, well no other way to put it, fall down drunk. it was actually kind of funny in a pathetic way, he'd be all into it, doing air guitar, and then just start spiraling backwards, windmilling his arms and fall on his ass. Not just once, but repeatedly. Based on his colorful hat we dubbed him "hat guy"). This worked out fine as the sound in the back was still superb, by far the best outside sound I can recall ever hearing.

Second set was in a word, AWESOME. A nice jam to start, into a rip-roaring Saint Stephen / Eleven / Saint Stephen..awesome lighting and patterns/images on the screen behind the band. Just some amazing visuals to go with the amazing improvisational wizardry that was going on. More tease, Tears again, Norweigian Wood, among others. So the Stephen repsise winds down, and in kicks that crunchy riff of Rockin the Free World. Now, I may be in the minority here, but I *like* that song, and it was a great choice for the 4th of July theme. Deal was rockin (how could it not be?) and I also liked Beautifully Broken. If there was one song I had really wanted to hear, it was Viola Lee, so when they launched into that I was jazzed big time. It rocked, just some amazingly mind-bending jams. This worked into Golden Road, and we decided to start a slow walk to the shuttle, not wanting to be at the wrong end of a 4,000 person bus line. Golden Road was great, and wrapped up just as we moved out of clear hearing range.

All in all it was a great show, especially that 2nd set which was truly amazing. Thanks Phil!

the show was killer and luckily I got on the bus at 3:30 pm and got inside at around 4. The security was trying to show a pressence by telling people who brought chairs in that they couldnt sit in them until the show started. What the meaning of that was I will probably not understand in this lifetime.

Then after the show it took my 2 hrs to get back to the parking lot and another hour to find my car because the "lot" was totally dark and I had to go up to cars with a bic lighter and had to wait until the fireworks exploded...anyhow out of time on this machine,,,see ya when I get back everyone,

The crowd around me dubbed this jam the "Fireworks Jam." We thought it was the band giving us their own version of 4th of July fireworks.... that jam was DEFINATELY something of a spiritual nature. I was almost in tears by the time they kicked back into Viola Lee.... that few minutes of music (the word "music" hardly does it justice...) right there melted away any/all of the still-to-come bus shuttle nightmare. You could tell Phil liked it too - you see him get that huge goofy mouth-opened-all-the-way smile in the middle of that jam? He was having a blast!

Can't wait 'till next time they're in the area...

FYI
They hit the Tears of a Clown riff many times all three days at the Greek in Berkely.

They may unleash an interpretation of the whole song before the tour is over, look out, it could be amazing!...wish I could be there when they do...

Was feeling bad about not getting up to Seattle for the show after seeing the setlist, But not after hearing the war stories....

"...the bus came by, and I waited in line, thats where it all began...."

Beautifully Broken is a new Warren tune..dont think it has Hunter lyrics tho.....Great tune...but I felt so sad for "poor, unlucky-in-love" Warren hearing the lyrics..

i would like to congratulate all the fine folks who struggled through the snoqualmie nightmare with good humor. if this had been any other crowd, it would have gotten damn ugly. some of my favorite one-liners about that annoying scene while crammed in line waiting for the bus:

"the bus came by, but i couldn't get on."

"they should hold ozz-fest here. a few fights and they'd have a parking lot cleared right by the venue."

In 30 years of so of Dead concerts, this was the porest organized I have ever seen.
Comming out of Alaska for the concert, the confusion of denying backpacks in was truly a hassle.
I was on the second bus to leave the parking lot and about half way there a white security van pulled the bus over and talked to the driver. Driver got back on the bus and said "You folks are not going to like this, I have to take the bus back." It seems that the venue was not 'ready' whatever that meant.
The bus then turned around and took us back and we waited for 15 minutes then left again.
It was such an insane move that many people on the bus began talking about permanently shutting down the venue, one man, probably a lawyer was quite bent on shutting the facility down.
Of the people I talked to, no one will ever return to that venue.
I would encourage anyone attending any other concert at that venue to re-consider and go elsewhere to hear your favorite artist.

Not a review here ~ But quite important in light of the shuttle bus sitiation ~ Please bear with me!
~~~~~~~~~
Here's a report from the July 23, 1999 Portland Business Journal about the first concert put on a this venue featuring Ani DiFranco ~ Make sure you all read the last line!!!
Rock and woe
Putting on a rock concert is harder than it looks, as the first-ever rock concert at the Snoqualmie Winery proved last Sunday night.
Singer Ani DeFranco performed to about 6,000 dedicated fans who outlasted a massive traffic jam and parking problems that delayed the show and turned back hundreds of ticketholders.
The plan was to have concert-goers park at Snoqualmie Middle School and be shuttled to the winery.
But a two-hour wait to get into the parking lot, followed by an estimated three-hour wait for a shuttle bus, was too much for many people who gave up and went home.
The five shuttle buses were caught in the bottleneck of cars heading to the parking lot. The problem was exacerbated when Snoqualmie police mistakenly believed the parking lot was full and closed it down, said Don Walters, spokesperson for Double Tee Promotions of Portland. Double Tee leases the winery for concerts.
"We weren't as prepared as we should have been," Walters concedes. "We really didn't have a chance to go through the parking layout with the police ... We'll be more prepared for this the next time."
So far, about 300 people who have asked for refunds will get their money back, Walters said.
Request a REFUND ~ This is the only way that concert goers can get the attention of these people ~ Simple complanits won't do ~ Phil & Friends suffer do to the fact that the fans suffer and get pissed ~ And it sure isn't Phils fault ~ I'm sure the band would enjoy playing this venue again, but NOT with these type of problems !!!
O< Quack!
Can someone give us some more specifics re: "Rockin' in the Free World??" One of my favorite (modern) Neil Tunes. Was it Rockin', Jammy, folksy or what? Need that one posted on PZ! Please!!
For MiamiGroove:
Rockin the Free World was done with pretty much the same arrangement/style as the electric version from Freedom, so I'd call it "rockin'. A small guitar break in the middle, and then some jamming on the way out. Warren sang it, and did a great job. I too like that song a lot so it was a pleasant surprise to hear it :-)
The whole 2nd set from 7/4 was excellent, looking forward to that showing up on etree soon.
Rockin' in the free world was not anywhere near as rippin' as neil's version- the arrangement was very similar, but the guitars lacked that huge, trashy distortion that crazy horse gets. It was fun and amusing, but I wanted it to rip and it didn't- mostly because of the lack of attitude from the guitar sounds- too clean- they should take a lesson from chuck berry- i saw him play a few weeks ago and he wired together 2 old fender showman amps- cranked them both wide-open, and had a sound that mudhoney would die for!
BTW- anyone notice that Bobby's "festival" will be playing at Seattle's Bumbershoot festival this labor day weekend? It's like $10 to get in to the festival- and Bobby's gig is included in the price- plus you get a zillion other bands on a zillion stages too... heads up!
FYI- just get there early for wristbands into the main stadium
THE SHOW WAS GREAT, second set anyway,missed the first set, bus problems here too. In my opinion , no view is worth that kind of hassle. Once the music starts, I'm to busy dancing to look at the view anyway. After the epic wait to get out of the venue and the crowded bus ride, the police were already rousting folks in the lot. We were in the middle of nowhere for god sakes. All the workers and police had " I'm a hick" tatooed on their foreheads. I, as a Seattle resident, am embarassed at the dumbassed backwoods mentalities found within a few miles of our city. I hope the next show is in the paramount!
Wow! I read each and every review. Sorry you folks had to experience a bad venue. Actually thats worse than a bad venue. Just the wrong management who only cares about money, not the music. Although great show from what I have read. August 2 is when Phil rolls down to Virginia Beach. I will do my best to give such great reveiws as Pinman, and well all of you fellow Phanateics.
he kind of reminded me of richard simmons with his tight little shorts, headband and tank top at eugene. most of the time though, i think "muppets" when he's bouncing around up there.
