Heads-up folks. For those of you driving into the northern VA area. We just received "The largest snowfall in DC area recorded history". Get to the parking lot early, 'cause there will be far fewer parking spaces available (gotta' put the snow somewhere...). There are plowed snowbanks 8' high at my local shopping center...

That's interesting, because it's a completely reserved show. Maybe you get to sit onstage and bang a drum!

I think it's safe to say all the DC area politcos and other freaks who've been stuck inside will be ready to get out and get down Saturday night. Those White House boys will probably sneak in....Will Al Franken be wearing his Kissinger disguise? Patrick Lahey? Harry Reid? Ann Coulter? YIKES! HA!

Starts with a meandering Playin that floats to a peaceful conclusion, Wang picks up the pace and the crowd respoonds with energy, oh the friend always my favorite and it does not disapoint, the ship is delivered masterfully and the sittin always brings my jive moves and they are out in force tonight ya a truckin that keeps the pace and We will finish with a nice refrain of one way or another ... Superb first set.

They played "Scarlet" just last night...for the 2nd time, so far.
Played "Estimated", Monday, as well as "Fire".
"Not Fade Away" was played Tuesday.

That makes every song in the 2nd Set, except for "Stephen" and "Morning Dew", played no further back than Monday, the 8th.

And, you still have to get through the rest of the 2nd Set, tonight.

That is my prediction as a guy who is going tomorrow, tonight's show and list and ending late means a lazy band tomorrow.

My excitement level is down.

Shorter maybe, suck ass, I don't think so. Barton hall will be solid, have decent energy, and there are still some very heavy shoes to drop.

And as far as the rest of the tour goes, if deliverance taught us anything, there's no reason run off cryin' just cause things got weird down South. So they'll start having to repeat a few songs, for the most part those will be stronger jam vehicles and they will probably occur in better structured set-lists that are performed by a possibly slightly more on point ensemble.

soooooo funny!! Damn that is funny Brentfan.. I know what you mean as I have seen my share of hold out shows---and ones like you mnetioned. I will be taking in Amhearst and Mohegan sun this tour and at this rate I could catch the scarlet.fire again (hammerstein)But with the amount of shows and the fact theyt have played scarlet twice already means that there is plenty of good material to be had. Barton hall was probably hoping for a remake of the classic 77 show but obviously that won't be happening. But you could get somehting like a werewolves>bucket>dew>dancin'>cold rain>reuben, music>deal 2. aiko>fire>playin reprise>born crosseyed>cream puff>victim>attics>throwing stones>NFA E. Gloria

The point is lendog, Greg, Josh...you don't know that, either way.
They've played plenty, there's still plenty to be played.
Also, all you're seeing is the quantity, so to speak, without knowing the quality.

Give it a rest.
Go to Ithaca, have a good time, party with your friends, and let the chips fall where they may.

You might be surprised...either way.

Listen, you don't know me.
I'm one of the most cynical, curmudgeonly motherfuckers on here.
I'm not saying enjoy it while it's still here.
What if it does suck tomorrow night?
Are you going to enjoy that?
All I'm saying, is stop making prognostications regarding situations which you have little to no control over...and see what happens.

You guys crack me up.
Two are the harbingers of doom..."Oh, no..look what they played tonight. I don't even want to go now, it's gonna suck so bad".
The other guy says, "Oh, it's gonna be great, I just know it".

Noooo...you don't.
None of you do.
Just go.
And see.
And, then critique on what you do know.

The 2nd set was long. It went from 10:13 till 12 AM. The donor rap and encore were very rushed (less than 5 minutes), as the band seemed to go past curfew.

Well stated lendog. I've been watching this band live since 10.7.77.

Does it make me an expert? No.

But some of the meanderings from folks take me back to the thoughts I used to think 30 years ago. like "Oh no! They were HOT tonight, are they gonna suck tomorrow?" They've proved me wrong and they've proved me right - yet there was or is no pattern and there never will be.

Eventually everyone who rides this bus long enough learns that this is an incredibly fascinating colorful quilt made of amazing music that does what it does, in its own time, in its own way... Some things just can't be fucked with and the Fellas prove that every night.

How many licks does it take to get to the center?

No one really knows.

Have a great night all. Peace, love and um, relax!

Ship Of Fools
Sittin On Top Of The World

New Speedway Boogie

Amazing second set. They finished Playing twice, including to begin the show. Rocking at times, gorgeous at times. They took their time at some key moments, eg Let It Grow, and in St. Stephen, which came to a complete, brief, intentional halt in the middle jam. And for the magnificent Playing reprise to end second set.

estimated, eyes at barton still left and stranger, china-rider, dew, lazy-supplication, jack straw, wheel, althea again? not too much else though, sorta, i mean their catalog is massive and they are playing all the tunes from 65-95, just about, so nething could pop up. oh well gimme some atlantic city. by that time they could play nething. have fun at barton folks because even though the tunes are gone already, kinda, they jam on Eminorblues or Adorian or Emajor7 for 15 minutes neway and its fucking great (because of some polymodal/polytonal superimposition and crossrhythms)! the tunes dont really matter the energy, exploration, improv and jamming do. let it happen. wish i could be there, just sold my tix to ithaca and miracled my hampton bc im sick unfortunately. you r all blessed if u make it to ithaca, wish i was with ya'll! just see how it happens. Johnny B. Goode

Are you sure you were at the show Keith? Ahhh well... everyone has an opinion... guess you weren't hearing what most of us were hearing. Sorry you had such a sucky time.

IMHO - The band was ON, especially Chimenti. There was a lot of weaving of songs in and out of jams... especially on The Eleven and FOTD. Help On The Way>Slipknot>Franklin's Tower,
Ship Of Fools, So Many Roads and Revolution stick out to me as my faves of the night if I had to choose. My only two complaints are that Phil's microphone was not loud enough, and the percussion section sorely lacked the oomph and driving force that Mickey and Bill bring to the table.

And not to worry, plenty of jamming going on.

Good vibes, good phriends, good music - who could ask for anything more?

I'm with the posters stating that you can't judge a show's quality by the length/quirkiness/uniqueness of its set lists. The GD proved that to me many times.

Furthur proved it to me again on 12/11/09. The 2nd set is ONLY 8 songs long. But that 2nd set is some of the trippiest, drippiest, meltiest GD music I ever seen performed. And the recording backs that up, IMO.

In defense of Keith, he calls it as he sees it. You may not agree with his call, but maybe his flaw is he has high hopes for the band.
And, I've known Keith over 20 years, he ain't no dumbass Mike!

I've always found the following approach/mindset to work very well when attending GD/GD music shows.

Hopes in the stratosphere, expectations kept very low. You never know what you're gonna get with either a box of chocolates or improvisational music.

this site is too funny..those that have been on the bus for a long while are clearly evident; those that have been chasing the bus are very clearly evident... It's sometimes makes me laugh and at times saddens me (for those that still don't get IT.) Maybe someday, yea, like by Phil's 75th birthday... I still like to giggle inside.

I'm going to Barton Hall tonight, thanks to a very cool Dead Head having some hard times; lets say a collective prayer for her, hoping for her situation to resolve.

Anyway, I'm 49 (been doing this a while, a mere 30 years), I'm sure this incarnation will play music tonight, thay's good, right? I gots some positive vibes and energy left in these old bones, I'm bringing all of it I got. Why not bring your positve energy and vibes along? I've witnessed that collective energy turn show on a dime. You can feel it when its there. Both feet still move so I'll dance, I'm pretty sure I got a chance at feeling IT, even if IT's momentary. Its all good so far as I'm concerned. I am fortunate enough to have been born in a time that privliged me to see all these guys, all this music. Its a blessing as far as I'm concerned. Makes me Grateful....

And as I've said before, when I pass through that turnstyle, I'll stop and say to myself, and anyone else that wants to listen; "Dam, Thank God, ITS still happening."

Thats my prediction for this show and the rest of the tour. See ya tonight.

Hey Hoff, you really summed up the divergent conversations around here.

I got on the bus in Jersey City 9/28/72...went to as many shows as I could over the years (including Barton Hall '77, was a student down the road in Binghamton)...and IT is still happening. I should note, though, that I'm part of another online community of longtime Deadheads, and the opinion is still somewhat split on this lineup -- but I think as more people see this band live that might shift.

In fact, the Miami and Orlando shows I went to last week were absolutely my fave post-Jerry shows (especially Miami). IT was there, big-time.

Have fun tonight.

Hoff is right... couldn't have said it better myself.

If you go in thinking "oh man, blah blah blah, last nights show was so good, this one will be bad" then why even go?..

There is a difference between being critical of the music and mindlessly yappin' about nothing.

As Hoff said get ON the bus and stop chasing it...

Was just perusing for a setlist and topically bumped into the strings of "this was great, will it be great, this sucked, or will it suck" and it struck me, well back in the early 80's while attending a show at Alpine Valley (think it was '85 or '86) Bobby completely lost and forgot where he was at resulting in him playing a couple chords that were way out of key, but the beauty of it was it worked! ....and it worked really well. Think Ornette Coleman and it was frickin brilliant. Going back and talking with others about it, I picked up replies like "that sucked" or "that was the worst version I've heard of that song to date" or "Bobby fucked that song up good" blah blah blah. From my perspective the dissonance was just what the song needed at that time.

Hmm, Once in a while you can get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right....

Y'all enjoy or not...maybe it's about a "Choice...?"

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By sluggobeast (Sluggobeast) on Sunday, February 14, 2010 - 10:59 am: Edit Post

The greatest Grateful Dead shows often had little to do with the setlist...it was the power of the performance and where it went, which was not connected to the setlist.

As a guy in his mid-50s, sometimes I think people went to the shows with a lot less expectations back in the pre-Internet days. Just an openness to get their minds blown (again).

Re: Possible Barton Hall Set-list/Song Selection

Yeah, cause to see a set/show with any of the following in whatever combination (nevermind that maybe 2-3 haven't even been played on tour yet and the fact is they are going into to the 8th show of the tour and god forbid the others maybe are "repeats" as recently as five shows /a whole friggin' or more week ago!!!) is not worth even going to:

Let the Good Times Roll, Bertha, Brown-Eyed Women, Big River, Birdsong, Black Throated Wind, Music Never Stopped, Deal, Samson, China Cat/Rider, Estimated, Eyes, Terrapin, Crazy Fingers, Comes a Time, Uncle John's, Cryptical/Other One, Wheel, Black Peter, Wharf Rat, Morning Dew

...the very likely potential of seeing many of the songs above (holding aside being performed with any level of quality/spirit) is reason enough to stay home...gimme a friggin' break!!!

..anybody wanna give-up their ticket to me right now so I can catch a plane and make it to the show on-time?

I went into last night's show with very high expectations (always a bad thing) and got a dream set list. Unfortunately, I think the band has a predetermined set list and will play those tunes whether it works or not. There were many high points but it just wasn't continuous. John seemed to be constantly waiting for a queue from Bobby as opposed to seamlessly fitting in. Why they would throw Revolution in between a St. Stephen>Eleven is beyond me. I guess they are trying to make it interesting for themselves.

I was with my buddy who is hypercritical and he couldn't help but comment that it was hard to take Bobby seriously wearing pajamas and playing a pink guitar.

I think this band has a lot of potential. Go to the shows with low expectations and you may be pleasantly surprised regardless of the set list.

play nice boys and girls play nice...this board is always tainted with a bit too much hostility. Have fun and catch what catch can...regarding the music, "its all for the taking" s Ray Leotta said in Goodfellas. If you are 19 or 69 or somewhere in between there is a great unique opportunity to be apart of something very special and something not offered anywhere else. The Dead is truly a commodity.

Guess that logic would negate just about every show from the 1980's. Maybe close your eyes and realize that this is a concert, not a fashion show?

What a great show, the whole band sounded great.

John is a total stud with that guitar and his vocals are right on too,I was totally impressed with Johns guitar tone and versatility, outfukinstanding...It felt like i was timewarped back to 88 or something, like a dream.

Bobby looked and sounded the best i can remember him sounding ever, pleasantly shocked.Loud clear vocals and a good command of the whole band, he was clearly the busdriver and he did a fantastic job orchestrating the transitions.

As far as the jamming goes it seemed like they were more comfortable not piddling around and just went after it.I sorta expected more nothing space noodling but we never got it, aside from the beginning of Playin. It sounded great the way they did it.

Phil looked to be enjoying himself while taking a backseat to Bobbys orchestrating, its working well so i'm sure Phils happy.Phils solid, he sang Franklins and did an inspiring job.He may have sang a few other songs, i can't recall. He nailed the Franklins.

Jeff was very good the whole night.

The drummers sound good but the guy in the middle needs to lose the red shirt, clashed. And the other guy with the long hair needs to stop that annoying hopping up and down and sit the fuk down..Overall they both were good.

The Sittin on Top of the World was the highlight for us, John did that justice in a big way.Spine tingling good.

It all sounded good mix wise, i won't go into specific songs. It just seemed like these guys have been playing together forever, like an old favorite lost shoe being found.
When it started i was waiting for Bobby to cheese it up and slow it down but it never happened, then midway thru the fisrt set i stopped expecting to be annoyed with Booby and settled into a Bobby the Busdriver euphoria of happyness, like a dream in semishock.

I'd be happy to see these guys do a summer tour.

The venue looked to be sold out, no empty seats and the concourse was crowded the whole night.

And they only had Bud and Bud Lite, totally unacceptable.hahaha..

Get off your butts and go check these guys out.

'One way or another' is NOT the Debbie Harry song hahaha, that was New Speedway Boogie to end the first set.

Foghorne thanks for the best review so far...sounds like from a musician yourself...sittin would be awesome to hear..WOW. As for some other comment like why not throw a revolution into a St. Stephen, its relevant.... and off the wall wacky comments like why is Phil singing this part and that part because he is a musical genious.

They blew the roof off! Starting with Playin' and ending the completely jam filled evening with Playin' reprise. You all know John from DSO. Pure fantasy fulfilled to see him apply his decade of Jerry emulated training be applied. Unbelievable, great stamina. So that's what the Eleven woulda sounded like back in the day, eh? Who knew? We do now. I raise my glass.

I was looking forward to this venue because I know the sound system would handle this intimate crowd of about 8000 with crisp solid sound. I brought a friend who was a heavy metal head back in the day and never saw Jerry. He was impressed with our crowd and never smelled so much tasty buds in one venue. To that note security was very cool and laid back for a venue in the Old Dominion. University campus atmosphere certainly seems logical for the boys to play without a lot of hassle. Wish I was going to Barton Music Hall. And not a bad seat in he house. The last show I saw there was when I took my kids to the sesame street show, much different crowd;)

Back to the show. As stated earlier, the spacey jams were non existent but not missed, because the three string trio Bobby, Phil, and John were on to each other. In fact, you could tell Bobby didn't want to see the jams end and John would look back as say o.k. here is some more. John is so nimble and upbeat. This line up was superb, which I honestly was not expecting. Cheminti fired up a mean Hammond. As for the drummers, I saw a rain stick, lots of congas, and some sort of salad spinner thingy that was played with a bow. Interesting that the young guys could keep up, and for that I give the drummers credit. John's jams are incredible and I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say, with all due respect, Phil and Bobby projected the energy left behind by Jerry on to John and there was a bit of reincarnation. John was tight. And as a resident of the local of the D.C. area it looked like John was playing a custom Paul Reed Smith. John put the hurt on that thing and jammed on.

It was a four hour show with surprises everywhere and non stop music. The jams were good, the fans were great and the buds were tasty. Enjoy the rest of the tour people, I sure wish I could continue on. Peace. Let it grow.

Back from DC and I've had time to collect my thoughts, so here is my detailed review of last night's DEBACLE; as requeseted by mike zoidatrap (Mstrapasso)

1st Set
My biggest complaint with the 1st set was the herky-jerky, push-pull of the tempo of the songs. They simply NEVER got comfortable with any of the tunes imho. It reminded me of the disastrous 2004 The Dead tour where Bob & Phil were at odds as to who was going to run the show (and we all know how that tour turned out in the end). Regardless, here's my take:

Playing In the Band - Great choice for the opener, way short on execution. Instead of being a psychedelic launch pad, it meandered into nothingness and fizzled out. The only thing special here was that they ended it, making it a complete albeit lame version.

Wang Dang Doodle & Friend of the Devil - competent versions; nothing special.

Greatest Story - one of the highlights of the set.

Ship of Fools - again competent, but nothing special.

Sittin' On Top of the World - the other highlight of the set.

Truckin'>New Speedway - had they launched into a high energy version of Truckin', things might have been way different. Instead, we got another 3/4 speed shuffle version with little or no punch at the end. Also, the intro into Speedway took too long (at times I almost thought they were going to play Deal instead). By the time they went into the song, it was an anti-climax. Overall, the version was OK (I would have preferred Cream Puff War as the "message/statement" of current affairs in our Nation's capitol)

2nd Set

Knowing how the boys can rebound, I was looking forward to the 2nd set opener and they did not disappoint. Help / Slip / Franklin's was the highlight of the night without question and I give them all credit where credit is due. Had the rest of the set been played at this level, we would indeed be talking about a new EPIC performance. It was not to be.

Cassidy - again, the song was played at 3/4 speed and in a harbinger of things to come, Bob seemed to lose his place in the song in the middle of the jam. Adequate, but nothing special here.

Lovelight - this song is a set closer ONLY. It has no place being played in the middle of the 2nd set. A pedestrian version at best.

Then the disaster commenced.......

St. Stephen - one of the most pathetic displays I have ever witnessed up close. John K butchered the opening riffs and Bob COMPLETELY forgot where he was in the middle of the jam - hence the almost full stop in the song. Embarassing to see, much less hear.

Revolution - another slow, throw away tune. Never one of my favorites in the interest of full disclosure.

The Eleven - another anti climax moment. Ballsy to try it given their level of execution last night and true to form, it pretty much went nowhere.

So Many Roads - John did OK with this tune, but it did little to restore any energy to the set.

Let it Grow - A perfunctory version only. Did not exhibit anywhere near the level of energy of the version I saw at the Hammerstein in December. At this point in the show, I was
WAITING for it to end..

Playing in The Band reprise - Why even bother?

Johnny Bullshit Encore - that pretty much sums up the entire show - LAME.

My $.02; YMMV. I'll be back at Lehigh on Monday with open ears to see if this was, indeed, just an off night. Sure hope so.......

The conjured up spirit of Jerry Garcia channels IT! Only Phil and Bob together can create that environment. Be grateful...

I gather the native politico's and big wigs went in disguise. Bet they too had fun.

IT works.

Ok everyone I was there and yes the 2nd set was off the hook!!!! THE ENERGY WAS RIGHT ON!! Phil singing franklins!!!! The Lovelight was awesome with lots of hot jams. The Stephen that just stopped mid jam when Bobby cut it off only to restart it, and it was sounding like other one then went back into stephen again with lots of energy that blow the roof off!!! into revolution and the band was on fire!!! Then the mind melt ELEVEN!!!!!!! They ripped it apart!!!! Oh yes they did!!! by far the best jam of the night. The so many road was very sweet and very well played and song by John. Thank you John!!!!! He really knows that song!!! Let it grow was a lot of fun which led into playin to end the set. The boys just cooked late night. There is no way Cornell has a chance to be anywhere close to that. Thank You Thank You Thank You! Oh great venue btw saw nothing bad happen all night. Rock on everyone see ya in Lehigh!!

Fitzman's review has got to be the most incorrect thing I've ever read on the internets. (Maybe it's the Bizarro World review? Is this a joke?)

If I was him, I'd quit going to shows. He'll obviously hate the rest of the tour, too.

This was a great, great show. Well paced, and intentionally relaxed at points. Not everything is supposed to be speed metal speed. The band accomplished exactly what it set out to do. They were pleased, and so was (almost) everyone there.

So Many Roads was a surprise that John sang very well, justice was served and i think they all knew how important it was to not screw it up.

As far as people bashing this or any other show goes, its all a personal thing.Everyone around me liked the whole show as did everyone in my group of six. There was a group of early 20's kids in front of us that reminded me of myself 20 years ago, they were loving it..My point also is that people have a right to be unhappy if they choose, no need to challenge their point of view and bring yourself down to that.
Just ask the guy that was doing the ballerina twirls behind the soundboard at set break, he'll tell you.

I also love that Debbie Harry song..

This was my first time seeing John and it was a pleasant surprise, i knew he was good but he exceeded my expectations.I will no longer refer to him as Fake Jerry.

my review from patriot center ...i wasnt expecting much because i went to the train wreck of a show at hammerstein in nyc in dec..

it started off slow with an uninspired playing and wang dang..it seems that as the boys get older the tempo slows down on most songs

fod was decent
greatest story started to pick up speed and the playing was getting much stronger
ship of fools was ok but john is still feeling his way around ..his playing with dso seems much more fluid and cormfortable.. i know all of a sudden playing with bob and phil is mind blowing but i think he is overthinking it

sitting was strong but truckin and new speed way cooked..the band was in the zone now.. the ending of new speedway with phil singing one way or another and bob singing this darkness got to give was off the hook

i was happy with the first set especially the second half

second set help slip frank was well played with good transitions and lots of energy.. phil sang franklins for his first song and nailed it..smiles all around after this one
cassidy was a little off.. bobby was forgetting the words and it messed up the tempo.. it seems hard for bobby to read the telepromter and play at the same time... it sucks to get old
lovelight was decent
st stephen was met with a huge ovation from the crowd and was done well but john could have stepped up more.. he is looking to bobby to much to get permission to play
revolution was a cool cover but bobby didnt know the words and had help from john.. it could have been better if john sang it alone.. bobby had offered to let john sing new speed way in first set but jk shook him off
so many roads was ok but agai jk sounded more comfortable in dso.. i think he will losen up eventually
the eleven was very well played and could have been the best song of the night.. bobby remembered all the lyrics and nailed it
let it grow never seemed to get locked in
close out with playing and wasnt super tight
the played for almost 4 hours at this point and were going over the curfew so they did a quick donar rap and johhny b goode.. the crowd really wanted to sing this one but the band didnt have time

overall a pretty good show.. the rehearsals are helping this new group
the setlist was great and the venue decent..security wasnt going overboard.. shakedown after had some good grub and shirts
the balloons were in full effect and i had to have a couple before the drive back to baltimore
it is amazing that these guys have the endurance for a 4 hour show and i will continue to go see this band
russo is a bad ass and jeff played very well and should be given some more solo time
i like the touch of the girls and they could be turned up a little
jay dosent seem to do much
good bless the grateful dead and everything that spores out of it

The only things I have to say Keith Fitzman is nuts about were the Lovelight and the So Many Roads.

I thought both of those were taken to church.

Actually, I thought the WHOLE NIGHT was a sermon, but I have to allow that Keith's descriptions of the songs and complaints weren't unfounded.

I'm sure it won't be the last time we disagree about show particulars.

HAVE SOME DAMN FUN IN BETHLEHEM, YA F'N TOOL !!!!

I have to say that Furthur is Philling my expectations! :-)
Many nice tunes being played. I like that JK is on guitar! He brings alot of energy to this band. He also lives and breathes the Grateful Dead music. High Five to him! Managed to see Hampton & Fairfax. There were high hopes for Hampton. However, Fairfax was a better show! In Fairfax, I must say that Bobby sang all tunes very well and the band was on key. Playin' opener was beautiful. I was suprised they did a reprise to close the show. FOTD and Greatest story was rockin' Truckin' had a nice tempo - however did not cross into a tru jammin'territory. Second set was gorgeous

Wow! best show of the tour, and I've heard 'em all but 2-19 at this stage. Smokin starts and finishes to both sets, and really thick set2 consisting of all GD tunes or tunes (Revolution) the GD had covered a lot. Full Playin opener capped by Truckin>Speedway and H>S>F opener capped by SMR>Let it Grow>Playin Rep. is pretty heady stuff boys and girls. this one is worth the cash for the download, or a trip to Demonoid.com
