WS.W.Medicine Show= Phil had "guests" being 3 horn players and the guitar guy, plus Levon Helm who sat at Molo's drum kit- Molo stood on his side and had 2 wooden shakers and smiles. VERY well played and sung song and slightly extended!

TerseaW was then a "guest" for a couple of set1 songs - one with Larry on fiddle. By set2 it seemed she is a new Donna, coming and going on and off stage. But she sang more as a new Joan ... except she sometimes bounces vertically (not when singing). China Doll was sooo special, as the Aud was respectfully enjoying the quiet tone and pace [the rockin of Alabama was done], this doll was Sweet. and I have NOT heard anyone sing Dancin' this well with Phil. Dancin ended slow and quiet, not long extended as if opening the show. We needed a Box of Rain after Dancin, yet no time tonight.

Set1 was embarrassing SHORT, I was told 50 minutes?? should we have an acoustic set maybe?? Another song or two would have been more normal IMHO. yet the guests and energy of what set1 had, might have had Phil's heart goin wild or the joy made time meaningless.

Loose Lucy great. Shakedown was great fun. Dark Star was either lame & bad or too different for me now. Viola is always fun and wicked and endless. Sugaree sweet. Mason wonderful and rockin!

The fog slowed driving for some after the show but was actually easier to see in than the rain downpours for the afternoon drive up I-93 (many wet Bikers). Stage2 band, Adromeada TAXI was nice.

ushers worked constantly to keep asiles clear, a bit much. thick with other security in the seating areas too. my first time at this place, it is smaller than SPAC and others (Camden). My only Phil show this tour...

Levon Helms set full of variety with blues / bluegrass / BAND songs, with lots of horns (some nice solos) and old blues guy on harp and some vocals. Besides standup bass player, Amy Helms and Teresa, with Larry not the only one switching instruments. Organ w/Leslie during The Shape I'm In.

Alabama- 3 times round trying to get the chords at the start. But then they friggin nailed it. Absolute Smoke

Jack Straw- get yourself a listen. rippin

Jackie let loose at the end of Sugaree, just screaming it out there... real fun, like the night in general. Saw way too many people getting kicked out by tightwad security, but that will happen at some venues...

A few notes that I remember... Dark Star included what could have been called a Cumberland tease (though they were still in the key of A)... Larry Campbell was basically conducting the tune with Levon, pretty cool watching them go around and around again with solos when they had been planning on closing it down after the basic vocal run through... Like a Ball and Chain was definitely one of the highlights of the 2nd set, some really strong classic rock sounds in there, mostly from Jackie, who seemed to really be the guitar hero, with Larry seeming a little lethargic... Mason's Children was fun, some cool power out of those chords, Jackie was a little behind on the vocals though... the addition of Teresa is really nice for the band, a little Donna-ish of course, but she offers some great harmonies (if the mic balance is right), and brought out a really nice China Doll, and a high-powered Dancin' (though during the China Doll she was looking at Phil for cues every five seconds, haha)... a fun night, if not a stellar show...

People can say how chill this venue is all they want -- but I didn't see anyone able to puff and I had cops and venue staff bugging me out the whole time. Not too much fun when you have cops fucking circling you like vultures because you are tripped out of your mind and dancing like a mad man and they don't like it.

Soooo, the yin yang balances itself out in the end and the coolness of the setting of course had to be balanced out by a dickhead staff that basically makes a fucking awesome venue suck. Pretty amazing feat of dickheadedness if you ask me.

I honestly felt I was amonst a bunch of puritans last night.

Thanks for getting the setlist, etc straight.

I would add that Jackie really nailed the Truckin' vocals, and he even missed part of a verse, a la Bob Weir. :-)

There was an Other One tease during Dark Star, too. And why can't Phil leave IN the actual short phrase that begins Dark Star? (rhetorical question)

Security everywhere....except at the nitrous tanks blowing wide and loud on the paved walkway to the parking lot! WTF?!

Anyhow, had a great time at these shows.

The band is much improved and Phil looks wonderful.

I am sure he will rest up for leg two of this jamboree.

Take care and be safe, all. :-) :-) :-)

This was my first P&F show since the 99 tour with Dylan. I loved it.

For anyone considering whether or not to go see this lineup, I would recommend it strongly. I am so glad Jackie Greene is in this band, he really belongs singing these songs.

Security was both annoying and laid back. The regular blue shirted ushers were cool, but it seemed the supervisors in the red were jerks. They definitely made it hard to dance in the aisles, but I made it a point to do so. From the smell of it, some people were able to smoke- but as I dont, I wasnt really bothered by how hard it was/wasnt to smoke.

Overall, great show, and I would definitely see this incarnation again.

Slydell - the security reminds me of the Capitol Theater in Passaic N.J. John Scher used to get his staff from Gestapo agents on the lam. Fortunately a lot of Passaic shows were simulcast. If you wanted to real feel for the place, just have your friend or roomie shine a flashlight in your face for most of the show.

I will sort of list songs of the Levon Helm set, from next morning memory... for certain Molo was on the drum kit for 2 songs in a row (Levon on mandolin), after Amy sat on drums for one. Larry played fiddle for at least 2 songs and also had acoustic guitar for one (mando for a song too, but no pedal steel all night).

6-22-08 New Hampshire
...missed first song(s)?
The Same Thing
a chicago blues tune w/Wild HARP sameguy singing
? another bluesy song maybe?
Ophelia
?? Levon on mando, Amy on drums
?? "" , Molo on drums
Ashes of Love (Levon mando+vocal, Larry fiddle)
Long Black Veil - Teresa lead vocal [maybe this song was one of the above?]
You're Gonna Miss Me When I'm Gone- Amy vocal

The Shape I'm In
Tears Of Rage - Jimmy vocal
Chest Fever - Larry intro guitar solo, sings
The Weight

note- at the Mtn Jam show Warren joined for I Shall Be Released and stayed for closer The Weight. I don't believe either show had Cripple Creek but maybe that was the Opener which I missed!?

holy foggy braincells batman, the best song of set last night, in the middle somewhere- like after Shape I'm In=

RAG MAMA RAG !! yes hot with horns and keys etc

A (older) couple sitting behind us had no idea who Phil is, but had seen Levon at the Merlefest and came for more. they stayed for all of Phil set1 and at least some of set2...

This night was NOT sold out, tix avail at door and they offered lawn people $10 "Upgrade" to reserved (rain for Helm set, not much after??).
5 seats in front of us were vacant before end of Phil set1, as were 6+ seats to our right, people never returned (some might have enjoyed massive compsumption of beer all day more than a night of Phil).

Not any shakedown-displays to mention (rain before show), I guess they cracked down on vending too. The people were all great to be with, and smile and dance together... I wish I had stayed longer and gotten to see more of the area (rain was blinding-hard in the afternoon, not good drive-around weather).

Loved this show, they nailed WS Wolcott what a treat that was. Alabama has never been a favorite of mine but they nailed it and Jackie's Sugaree is always huge and I have tons of love for that and of course for JGe himself. Masons was thick, nasty and totally out of left field and Teresa can sing me China Doll anytime.

I agree with the sentiments that this was an great venue with a pretty terrible staff/police presence. Way undersold and me and my crew were 4th row center all night with no one claiming the seats (we had 3rd row tix but way on Molitz's side). Young punks in front of us were actually looking for a fight, aggression in thier eyes and not there for any part of the music or vibe. They pushed a female head that danced too close to them and were nearly jumped by all of us though we were trying our best to not throw down in front of the band and train wreck the GRATE vibe. Where was security? Just ignoring the issue of course though this young power tripped blue shirted chick refused to let me back to my seat after a piss break and I couldn't rejoin my buds front and center. The punks were eventually just vibed too hard by us and left to find a fight eleswhere I am sure. In fact I have not seen a fight inside a GD or family related show since Philly JFK 1989 (where I saw three) but I feared that it was going down in at Meadowbrook.

Still a fantastic show and I loved the fact that one could walk through the woods to the motel. Gathering of the Vibes is the only other one I'll able to catch this summer but hoping for another 10 night run at the Nokia, anyone heard anything on this?

Hey Zoners

I had a great time seeing Phil in Boston and NH.
Please follow the link to see some video clips I posted.

They're a little big so I hope you all have a fast internet connection.

If you scroll down to the bottom of each videos page they are available for download.
Please feel free to download for PERSONAL USE ONLY. So load up your video Ipods people.

I have about 40 more clips to post but I'm not liking the speed of the Vimeo site.
Do any of you all have recommendations for another high quality free video upload site?

I'd love to hear your comments. I hope you like them. If you are only going to DL/stream one of them I would recommend 47 seconds of Franklins Tower ecstasy
See you all on the Phil Northeast Fall Tour.

anyone besides me think that Jackie Greene in his hat at Gilford looked a lot like Dylan in the rolling thunder, 1975 era?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Steven S (Skeptical_envelopment) on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 - 12:33 pm: Edit Post

Listen up: Jackie Greene is not the next Bob Dylan, he doesn't look like Bob Dylan, he does not have anywhere near as much talent as Bob Dylan . . . he's not the second coming. And he's not JG, for heaven's sake.

He's a talented, serviceable singer-songwriter who's adding some nice touches to Phil's current lineup. But please don't see him for anything more than he is. Were he not playing with Phil, few of you would know who he is and certainly would not be extolling his (limited) virtues.

And if Jackie is the one who places the Garcia doll on stage, then he's a putz.

fucking A, Ronald.

I thought music was great and there were many, many highlights! In particular, the Viola Lee is a fucking standout. I have rarely heard so much passion just explode in a song (why I folowed Phish....). The transistion into Dark Star was just sublime. I felt like Phil Lesh was Captain Trips leading us through the rain and fog of it all. Sugaree was awesome (shredding guitar!), and Truckin was a great appropriate closer. He certainly helped lead me through my adventure. I wasn't keen on the Dancin closer, but I cant complain after the 5 show run I just saw. I'm tempted to go to South Carolina and New York shows now in addition to Charlottesville. I think this band is sooooo worth it. I'll just work a shitload of OT. I dont fucking care.

Sure, the Jerry doll is cute. Hell, I've got a Garcia marionette hanging from the ceiling in my basement.

But for a professional musician to place a doll on stage in some lame attempt to do I don't know what (channel Garcia? prove his own hipness? sure it can't be to pay homage, because it's an unbelievably cheesy move) is just lame.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By AC (Acroses) on Thursday, June 26, 2008 - 10:01 am: Edit Post

Jackie has nothing but love/respect for Jerry and as far as the doll is concered do you think if Phil thought it was "cheezy" he would let it grace a P&F stage?

I for one feel that Jackie's virtues are very diverse and even astounding at times. If you don't enjoy what he brings to the table, don't go!

what if Phil placed the Jerry doll on Jackie's amp as an inspirational beacon? Would you still persist with your insipid and irrelevant complaining?

At least out here on the west coast, whether or not Jackie has that cheesy doll (and I agree, it *is* cheesy) or how it got there is a pretty f'n trivial problem compared to the much greater problem: the crowd. Constant chatter, constant texting/talking/surfing on Personal Wanking Devices -- i.e. enormous disrespect for the musicians, especially during the quiet parts, where no doubt they can hear the dull roar of the chattering idiots.

Used to be (said the old crank), the crowd understood, and took up, its role in contributing to the music, to IT -- now they talk through and over an acoustic Ripple, and bitch about a stuffed doll sitting on an amp.

<<what>>

Of course I would. I've noted that I appreciate Jackie at some level and I enjoy the Phil shows I see every tour. The doll is lame. Phil's indulging Jackie, that's all.

And I do agree with Essephreak's assessment about the crowds. Too many people are never in the moment (and end uo messing up others' times) with their incessant gabbing, texting, and hey, I'm at a show and am having a helluva time approach.

Had an interesting second set...

Started walking to my seat and then the lights went down.Confusion...
So I slid up from my 11th row seat to 4th row DEAD center. We were all having a BALL!Just hangin with my old school pals, you know the folks that "ARE EVERYWHERE".
Sadly during Viola some pathetic Motherfucker showed up.Obviously not one of US and having had too much too fast he beligerently started spouting off about how these were his seats and just plain making a spectacle of himself. He not only shoved this Honey that was next to me but proceeded to pick a fight with everyone in the area.I put myself between the lass and when he tried to speak to me I gave him the "HAND".All us heads just looked at each other and without a word spoken knew that this just aint gonna happen. So maybe through the greater consciencness or just the fact that this guy was way in over his head, fate would have it that when his cup was empty,he sat down. When I say down,I mean down...and out!His more polite buddy roused him after China Doll and escorted him quickly to the nearest exit.Nary to be heard or seen since.
Freakin yocal punks!
Other than that I had a GREAT Time!
Fourth of Four and Feelin FINE.
Saw ALL the BEST ZONERS there.
Despite the rain, spirits were not damp.
Thanks PHIL!

db - I was right there in the row behind you and actually held "that guy" and the brother with the glasses apart at one point to avoid the ugly scene that may have ensued. See my comments from above. We truly are everywhere!

I thought it was a great show, esp. second set. Shakedown was awesome... and that jam into Jack Straw with all the Fire teases smoked! Viola was killer as always (esp. with all that China Cat teasing in the jams)... great Truckin' to close. Really, the entire 2nd set was rippin'.

That was my sister who helped cause the ruckus (by trying to dance) in the middle of 4th row, mid-second set. (long blonde hair, they tell me she's cute, but it's my sister!) Our actual seats were on the right side of the right-center aisle, 4th row. She mentioned the ruckus in there, when she returned. I asked her if it was just because she was trying to dance, and I got a "sorta" answer from her. No such problems at our seats. Yeah, there was security in the aisle, but it was pretty relaxed, in general.

It was one of those things where you are so close to it you couldnt help but stand up against it.No turning away.
"Some folks look for answers,others..." well have no fuckin clue!
I agree about the little blue shirted blonde Nazi on the aisle, she hassled all of us at one point or another.

Glad to hear you'll be at the Vibes.
See ya there!

I would've kicked you out of my seats too, by the way, although probably not beligerently. But trust me - if you're in my seat - you are moving.

It's one thing to move into an empty seat - its complete uncool to cope someone else's just because you feel you are a better "fan" than the other dude.

That's true. That guy might have been a belligerent drunken ass.... but those were his seats, weren't they? Aside from his approach, why was he wrong for wanting to sit in his assigned seat?

As a individual who witnessed this first hand it didn't go down as "these are my seats please move" it was "THESE ARE MY F**IN' SEATS" and then a shove to the female dancer.

If she was asked with even a little respect I am sure the whole situation would have been avoided but these punks were looking for a fight.

Nothing wrong with wanting to or having the right to sit in your own seat but shoving someone that was there without even giving them a chance to move? Please....
