Raheen-I got a different view of Canandaigua last year there were ATF (Alcohol Task Force) they were making people pour out their beer and I also witnessed people getting busted for herb~as usual!!! but all in all Phil put on a good show 'Foolish Heart" "Here comes Sunshine"!!! just watch yourself n the lot!!! :) :) :)

We've been going to FLPAC for years and the last couple, the parking lot scene has really changed. The ATF (purple shirts) has been going way overboard. Last year for Santana, my wife and I were eating subs and drinking a beer on the tail gate of our van when we were approached by "THE ATF" and asked to dump our beers, they were in plastic cups. When I resisted they asked if I would like them to call the sheriffs over. I promptly dumped and we went inside our van and snuck beers the rest of the day, 40 years old and sneaking beers like a teenager. FLPAC is second only to Red Rocks as far as venues, in my opinion, but the ATF has got to go. Oh by the way, GDTS hooked us up with sweet tix this time around, front row center. 7 days away, can hardly control myself.

I didn't see any sort of lot scene there at all last year...Hmmm...Maybe that's why! Inside the venue was pretty chill, though. I'll have to remember to watch out fot he purple shirts!

I grew up canandaigua and there will be mad cops & sucrity. Canandaigua is full of narks. We dont even go there any more for our weed . We go to Rochester or Geneva. Geneva is A crack cocane town. Cops Are Dicks (For those who are going to attend Rat Dog in the fall) Back to Cannandaigua. They will be enforcing the open container law. So bring ice and a colored thermis bottle and you should be set. Bring your own beer. They'll try to stop people from vending and if your caught selling to a minor your fucked. If they see any Beer in your car they wont let you in the parking lot. So cover it up. Well have agood sow. It wont be like saratoga. What was up with Saratoga any way. I couldn't find any acid. Every one had EX though. I saw them carry away at least 5 people. One guy was twitching on the ground. People are idiots.

Please, allow me to be the first...

Once again, I am worthless at work. Not as bad as the day after SPAC, but still a sack of shite, nonetheless...

Set 1:
Jam> Tastes Like Wine
The jam started out ripping. I thought I heard elements of Dark Star in it (but, then again, I always hear elements of Dark Star). After 3 or so minutes everyone faded out until it was just Warren singing the intro to the tune. A very nice, mellow opener that set the tone for the rest of the show...

Pride of Cucamonga > Hard To Handle
Pretty typical Pride. It's good to hear Phil step up to the mic and do some singing...The Hard to Handle took me completely by surprise. It's got the same "horn riff" from the original Otis Redding version, but it's much darker and slower than the PigPen H2H. This ain't your mama's H2H! Very nice jams between the verses. Warren's voice gave it some sweet emotion...

Brown Eyed Woman > Cold Rain & Snow
BEW is such a great tune! And Rob does such a great job with the vox. And I simply adore hearing Phil sing about the Old Man gettin' on...Go on Old Man!! I think it was in the BEW > CRS segue that there was a DISTINCT He's Gone jam. Thought for sure they would bust into it, but, instead, they elevated the jam, increased the tempo and kicked into a CRS. On a rare, muggy, 90 degree upstate night, the thought of Cold Rain and Snow was very refreshing! Towards the end, they brought the refrain down to a whisper and, in the blink of an eye, BOOM! Kicked it back up into full speed to end the set with a bang...

Set 2:
Dire Wolf > Mirror of Thalassa > Uncle John's Band >
The Dire Wolf opener was pretty standard. (Please note that by "standard" I don't mean boring, but rather "nothing out-of-the ordinary that would smack the taste out your mouth...") Rob on vox is such an essential element to the Quintet. Into Mirror which set the crowd back down on its feet. (I had to use the facilities during the Mirror...Bottles of wine will do that to you! Can't really comment too much on it) Into UJB which really set the crowd on fire. Again, pretty standard version. I absolutely love the jams they pull off after the verses. They send me down twists and turns the Dead never did. It's fun to have a classic send me spinning in bold new directions...

Cryptical Envelopement > She Said, She Said > Other One > Cryptical
Hey Buck, you said you hated it when they catored to the people on tour with regards to the O1 > Cryp snippit from SPAC?!? Well, first off, the SPAC snippett was REALLY INTENSE and not at all lame as you implied...Secondly, it was just a preview for this monster sandwich! From the begining notes of Cryptical, my mind was spinning...Pure psychedelia at its finest! Cryptical segued into the She Said...Another Beatles tune? Perhaps sending some good energy to George Harrison? As the jam out of She Said segued, it was Bombs Away! O1 came roaring thru with a vengance! I could feel Cowboy Neal driving the bus by the vibrations in my chest! I love it! They finally put our feet back on the ground by rounding out the Cryptical...

Comes a Time
Warren belted out this Jerry classic that grounded the crowd after such an explosive O1. What can you say about this tune? It's always a great set closer...End on a mellow note...

E: Acadian Driftwood, Box of Rain
It was 10:30 and they had half an hour to play before curfew. I expected something really balls-out like a US Blues (a guy can dream, can't he!?!) Got a really mellow Acadian Driftwood and a Box that was done with 10 minutes to spare. Very mellow renditions of both. Nothing to blow your sox off...

All in all, it was a fun follow up to SPAC. Hilights were (1st set) BEW, H2H, CRS, (2nd Set) Cryp > O1 > Cryp

Onward to Camden...

-The Rev. Raheen M Shabbazz
"We didn't land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on us!!"

Rev.,
A really nice review. There are really great shows like this one and then the shows that nobody can quite write a review about because it transcends music. Looking forward to meeting you and all the others this weekend. Gotta take a pic together and send it to Clarson, who is so jealous already...this will really send him over. Have a good rest of the week, and thank you for the sweet taste of upstate.

unfortunately it became one of those songs that was WAY overplayed. actually if you haven't heard it in awhile, it isn't that bad a song, but for awhile it was the encore almost every night. too much.

my point is that EVERYTHING eventually became overplayed when you look at it in the grander scheme

how many times would we sit there reading a Duprees, count the times played for each individual song during half a tour and then be able to write that night'sshow down on paper and turn out 75% correct, at least...?

pretty sure we all played that game

Ah the Heads who can't quite quite twist their psyche around the beauty of "THE NOW"...The second-by-second Zen philosophy Phil conveys...

The Heads who are constantly throwing out numbers and dates and comparing everything that's happening to everything else that happened years ago..

"Not quite as good as the xx-xx-xx show where we got the X > Y > Z"

"This song used to be the encore every night so I don't want to hear it again"

"They only teased me with Whats-it-called"

"A four minute intense snippett sucks 'cause it ain't the whole 30 minute version like they played on xx-yy-zz"

All I can say is, "Om"...

Good god, all of you, except the Rev, stop the moaning. If you don't like what you hear, just keep it to yourselves. I already lost one favorite source of spirituality, don't want to lose another one, because the leader of the band reads how much you all are bored. Come on now. Jerry is dead, the Dead have retired, and Phil and Bobby are out there kicking individual butt in their own ways. Be grateful that they want to, especially Phil, 31 shows this summer, just to please you all. Ungrateful you sound. You may not be, but that is what you sound like. Just my opinion.

My goodness people. If you're bored then stay home. Life is WAY too short to spend so much time and energy doing something you find boring. Perhaps life would be a bit more enjoyable if we lived in the now-maybe you shouldn't read setlists and only go to one or two shows per tour so you wont be burned out. Phil and his quintet are making some serious kick a$$ music these days. Stop being the Wicked Messenger

~Dyerwolf-Phil Throwing away the rulebook~

Heck yea he has. This is Phil's band and he's leading it the way he wants too. If you want to see more Dead shows check out Darkstar Orchestra. Excellent band whose sound is so right in line with the Dead's sound it's spooky. If you want to see how surviving members from the Dead are still evolving after 36 years, go see PLQ. Part of what makes this band so exciting is their unpredictablity. Bringing out songs that the boys shelved for some reason or another: i.e. Golden Road, Alligator, St. Stephen, Here Comes S.S. (original version), Mountains of The Moon, Cryptical, The Eleven, Viola Lee, etc. Phil is not covering old songs, he is interpeting them with other musicians, putting together set lists that flat kick a** every show. This is the first band I've seen since 1995 that flat blows my socks off, not only for a few songs a night, but for the whole show. They are fresh, bold and exciting. Thank you Phil, and please Keep Truckin' on.

Yeah, I have to agree with Dewitt on the whole "Life after the Dead" scenario...it is what it is ...and its great.....it be better if the dead were still around ,....but come on....look at this great band phil has.....(we are damned lucky!)hell i remember talkin trash about some of the dead faults...but then jerry died and there was no more "jerry and the boys"...at least we still have "the boys" part of the equation.....not to mention a few more "boys"......esp. jimmy and warren who have done a tremendous job of soothing the loss that we all felt when jerry died.the spirit of the dead lives on with P&F and though im no huge fan of ratdog....the spirit lives in them as well.....so give it up for these guys....if you dont like it........stick to your GD bootlegs..........well ill get down from my soapbox now.....ROCK ON my bros and sis.....out

I saw four magnificent P&F shows this Summer (highlights being night 2 at Red Rocks and Deer Creek) and will travel many miles to see and hear P&F. I've been fortunate to have seen all the Phil & Friends incarnations and this one is the real deal. Very reminiscent or early 70's Dead.

Why can't we express opinions that aren't always exactly in tune with your spiritual version of the universe.I hear so much hype about Phil and friends how great they are etc.etc. I saw 2 shows lastr year that sucked Jones Beach and Waterloo village I mean they sucked musically. Phil was play some pretty cool stuff but the rest of the bandwas out of it.They claim to leave the Grateful Dead behind but they are really milking it when most of their songs are Grateful Dead songs.People come see these bands because they have ex Dead members in them. And don't worry about Phil quitting. As long as he remembers some the words to some of the Dead songs and as long as he can hire cheap musicians he'll keep playing.
I am going to a few shows though and I hope Phil and friends does kick ass but I,ll wait and see.PEACE.

JPierre, I would rather pay you for your tickets and save more dancing room for those that care than listen to your mumble. If you have doubts about what this line up brings, listen to some free downloads, but the energy in and about these shows, is for once all positive, and it is a beautiful thing to be a part of. As for the knucklebrain knocking the east coast energy-one fact for you. Why is it that this band spends three times as much time here, in the East than they do back West? WE ARE GRATEFUL!!!! My time on the soapbox has ended. And watch out, Bucke and Don might come and get you, and probably Hilary too.

I saw DSO last night and was almost scared by the authenticity, esp. the Bobby knockoff - I finally got the up the neck rythym guitar that I cited as missing in the PLQ in a prior thread. The Bobby played more like Bobby than Bobby, and the Donna was actually tolerable. Go see DSO once for a perfectly guilty pleasure knock off. Phil is doing new music, even the "covers" are new with the scintillating energy. There is no such thing as perfect, but when there is no more tour you will be wondering why you were publicly complaining about a show that had just happened the night before. It's all different out there, and it's all good and you won't go anymore if it isn't. I saw my four shows this summer and am perfectly happy to stay home now and refocus on surfing...

Dewit it was pretty clear to me on this tour that east coast shows sell better. thats it..not more love for the band, just more people. the crowds are mellower than they were but the % of agressive behavior here in the east (with exceptions, of course) is also obviously larger, even now. lotsa good apples in the barrel, though..

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Dewit (Dewit) on Wednesday, July 25, 2001 - 10:08 pm: Edit Post

I have to disagree, but not vehemently. The population here is larger, so yes, more people, but I don't think the agressiveness is increased. Maybe in correlation to the increase of patrons. I do think the energy level from both the band and the fans is on an entirely different level though, and the band has definetely acknowledged that both in their playing and in Phil's donor raps. That said, it is ALL GOOD!!!! and I feel blessed everytime I get to see them.

i definitely saw a rise in ignorant close proximaty cigarette smoking and glaring occasional rude behavior when i rolled into the east (and i've lived here since '84)...though security wise, hartford knows how to look the other way (there were hundreds of unercover busts in Alpine i've been reading about) and keep things peaceful and i was grateful for that...you're right, its all good and i feel blessed as well, AMEN to that..

Whats with all the negativity after each show and on every review thread.

-I was never informed that anyone who wanted to enjoy our scene needed a diploma in Dead history.

-Why do certain people out there find it necessary to put down what others have to say. Let's see you say something of your own for a change, and try to be positive.

-From all my recollections I've usually purchased a ticket to go a show. If you don't like it don't buy the ticket and please by all means don't go. I hate bumping into the ones who make it a point
of not enjoying themselves.

I wish people would stop complaining about the Phil Shows. I went to Hartford and Saratoga, both shows were amazing. Much better than ANYTHING done on the 1994 Dead tour ( the only year I got to see them) The current lineup sounds as good as prime concerts that I've heard from say 1974 to 1977. One day we won't have shows like this anymore. When all that's left is Limp Biscuit singing about breaking things, you will regret missing Phil&Friends and Ratdog

why is everyone so territorial! east coast people know how to enjoy themselves just as much as any one else. maybe all you west coasters are just jealous because we east coasters can actually sell out some shows, or maybe your jealous because the home base of jam music now resides in burlington , vermont instead of san fran, california.

east vs. west: the westcoast shows i saw (allegedly) were always way more mellow than east coast. no comparison. the people were nicer and mellower and the band was the same way. probobly because they weren't on the road. it's different when the musicians are at home, leave home, drive to work (the show) perform and drive home afterward as opposed to being out on the road. there's a real buzz about being on the road and mix that with the manic energy of the east coast, which is undeniable, and you have all the makings of a molital (huh) cocktail. (also saw, allegedly, many dog shows on eastcoast as well).

Take your East vs. West coast crap over to the Rap Battle thread...

Anybody have anything to say about the venue, what songs they hope are played, meeting places, a freakin' review of a Phil show maybe!?

Why don't those of you who want to argue create your own special thread so that the rest of us don't have to scroll through this negative poo-poo...

Its making me sick reading these unkind words. Please do me and everyone else a favor who doesn't want to read any of this bashing. Keep your thoughts to yourself please. I will be bringing a boatload of positive energy to the Jersey shows.

And for those of you old enough to remember, doesn't this crap sound a lot like the Brent-bashing going on up to and after the point he died?

Brent's not Pig, Brent's not Keith, I don't like the sound...etc...

A lot of us got sick of that thread too, but what are you going to do? Opinions are like @#$%^'s everybody has one. Both coasts have plenty to go around, IMHO.

I will say that the one time I walked out of a show was at RFK in 94; used my BS pass to go behind the stage at the end of the first set and got plenty of quizzical looks from the roadies as Carol and I left. Too much Rebel Yell in our vicinity.

Hey Im from Va. Roanoke to be exact.
Were are you from?
And for the rest of you guys>>
Back in the 8tys and early 9ts, I went to shows to get away from diversity and stressful situations. Because I loved the music. It was peaceful and relaxing. So can we all just forget what side of the USA we came from and forget all the negativity.
I dont give a damn where the f**k you came from, Or what F**king color you are, or which keyboardest you whould love to suck the best. What happened to the ^sit around campfire, smoke weed and have sex all night^ days?
I dont mean to sound hateful and its probably none of my f**king buisness, but I just want to hear about GOOD times and show reviews and get togethers.
Dont ruin it for other heads like me.

jinpa, quick philosophical question here. What is the difference between you comparing east vs. west coast shows on the FLPAC thread and my making a comment about the Red Rocks show on the Missouri show thread (which, by the way, you ragged on me for; i.e., posting a message not relevant to the thread on which it was posted)? Just curious. Time to look in the mirror oh great hypocritical one.

Peace.

andrew, there has been exactly 1 ONE review from the middle finger lakes in the last two days. the last time i looked, the landolakes was in ny. however the mellow midwesterners have put to shame the upperstaters. however, as you have seen, since i apologized to all the farmers, i haven't said anything negative about nonposters. so while we wait and wait and wiat for reviews, we like to chew the deadfat and throw around some thoughts. however once a review is to be posted, it should be posted in its appropriate cabinet. otherwise anarchy reigns and civilization as we know it will circle the drain. don't worry, andrew, readers will find it, you don't have to find the readers.
oh and btw andrew, thanks to you, i now have a new signoff moniker: OGHO. thanks.

Here is MY REVIEW. GREAT SHOW..Starting with the Frogs, who are just brilliant, all the way to Phils Encore, the show was amazing. Cold Rain and Snow may have been the highlight, I can say in all honesty,it was the best rendition Ive heard. Dire Wolf was spectacular,Uncle Johns was great..Brown eyed Woman was a surprize and i was more than happy.... NOW I GO TO THE LOT SCENE. Just like the old tour...FUCKING PEOPLE WITHOUT TICKETS FUCKIN AROUND DURING THE SHOW.... the Hood of my new car was used as a COKE TRAY DURING THE SHOW. SCRATCHES AND ALL. I consider myself a deadhead, and a phishhead ,leshlush,etc.... BUT THE JUNKIES ANNOY ME.THEY VANDALIZE<THEY RIP OFF.FUCK THEM FOR RUINING MY NIGHT....Music was great.....parking lot sucked.

"east vs west"? and as for songs being overplayed.....i dont feel real sorry for you ungrateful touring folk who whine about setlists.......just cause you get to hear x-versions of a song doesnt mean someone else shouldnt get to hear it at at the one or two shows they may get to see...........anyway nuff said......love to all the kind folks, regardless of your valued opinions....

to all the people that had their car fucked up because of tour rats doing coke on them, well im preety sure i was parked next to the van that it was comin out of, and well the "camp utica kids" that were in it were a bunch of scumbags. i dont why some of these people come tpo the shows. if people stop buying at shows and start brining there own, maybe we can cut down on some these assholes. as for the show, it was pretty mellow compared to mass/hartford/toga, but it seemed that it fit the mood perfect, a lot of warren tunes, tastes like wine opener was nice, cryptical was also cool, just a mellow show, only about 10,000 people, really nice area of ny,

I just wanted to say hi and this was the only show I could see this summer due to my more than busy schedule. I'm very pleased with what Phil and our friends are doing! I am somewhat disappointed thou in the kids out in the parking lot and to the other people who are wanna be friends of our scene. Phil doesn't need all the b.s. and people (in general) the ones that actually go in the show to see this band don't want to put up with this crap either. I know I don't. The Beacon run in N.Y.C. was almost my last show because of this childish like behavior.

I went to a number of Dead shows from the mid eighties and on, and the Phil show I saw at FLPAC was the closest thing to recreating that type of energy I have seen since. I have seen a few Bobby shows and this is my third go round with Phil and Friends. The current line-up seems to gel better than any I've seen before. These are all just opinions. You know what they say about opinions. The show I saw in Canandagua and the set lists I've seen from other shows on this tour have been plain outstanding. I was thankful to have been there and I am now for the first time since Jerry's passing excited about seeing a 'Dead' related band. Keep up the FINE work phil and Friends and do this fan a favor-Stay Together. In Dead society, as in any society you will have nay sayers and devils advocates but the only thing that should matter to anyone currently listening is the sound entering your head. East coast-West coast c'mon can't we all just get along?

Here is 1/2 a review:

Got there in the blazing heat, with the intent of vending, me & KP were there plenty early, but I still moved my vehicle across the way for better visibility (a key component to the 2nd 1/2 of the tale)

Set out my wares, then proceeded to climb into the trunk, set up my sweet, girlie, pink Felix umbrella, & kept cool & mellow.

As usual, our man Molo was out rolling through the scene. The two dudes in the truck next to me were exceedingly pleased to meet him~

"Molo Solo tonight my brother" the one dude implored...Our rhythmic fiend of a friend was tickled pink at the request, PLUS my neighbor sweetened the offer by offering him a tasty nugg (:

Since I am nosy when I wanna be, I stepped out to check out the scene. & since it was furthermore WAY hot, I offered Molo a shot from my cool~down spray bottle. He might have been wary as to it's possible dosed-ness, so he sez to me~"I'm good on the h2o but I'll take a hug" {brief yet gushing warm love ensues}

Went inside eventually, dug the acres of room & found me some space. When the boys hit the stage, they were in FULL jam mode, swirled & spaced til they dissolved into a perfect "Tastes Like Wine" which rolled right into another gem~Pride of Cucamonga, truly a fave of mine I always treasure...& THAT led into the utterly sick funkified jam that somehow made it's way into a WILD Hard to Handle!!! (sorry TC) OMG this was a sick highlight. This song NEEDS to make the repetoire on a more regular basis.

Then after forever they pulled me out a Brown Eyed Women (gone are the days when the ladies say please INDEED) which is another one that pleases the hell out of me, ending the set with a nice Cold Rain, which Phil has romantically altered for his Jill love...

That's it for now amigos y amores...The Dire Wolf second set opener is where I'll begin, if I ever do get to the rest of this...

Jeez, it's a good thing I read the rest of these before putting up my 2nd 1/2 review... I love the tourhead cokesnorting stories~I thought tour rats only did rolls!!! Anyhoo, my vehicular abuse story was brought upon by none other than ~ THE MAN
But I am skipping ahead. Oh, & I neglectd to thank the sweetie sticker vending bro who embellished my li'l ole phlzon vehicle with a magical shroomie~eyeball sticker!!!
The Mirror of Thalassa was nice cos it transitioned well between the Dire Wolf & UJB: the whole show was well thought-out, with many songs that were rare gems on this tour...
Our Righteous Rev S pretty much summed up the Cryp~>She Said~>Other1~>Cryptical sandwich: & I enjoyed every last morsel fer sure AMEN, AWOMEN, & Halle-mofo-lujah
Comes a Time is always beautiful and moving when our new fatman is giving it to us...The NYE version was clearly the most profound, but, as I said earlier, each song seemed plucked from the golden tree of infinite possibilty & placed before us to savor, which I surely did FULLY on this night.
Arcadian Driftwood was SO for our Northern~Bordered Buds who came down for the Phil!!!
{sidenote}Canadians always have the best ganja...
Then of course the double~encore Box was just orgasmo beyond belief!!!
I drifted outta that place, oh~so~grateful to have made the trek, & feeling fine & fulfilled.
Had a sweet time and cosmic conversation with the WAY magickal Kat, who ends up being from my hometown. We are standing there loving the universe, thanking the local cop for his hard hard work, when the melee ensues.
Many cops are, right behind us, just catching their dreddie pursuee... What do they use to tackle him against?? The entire passenger side of my vehicle!! Including the mirror, which, from the popping sounds & glass, I was initially afraid they shot the poor dude & he'd be like slumping in a bloody heap against my vehicle. It was freaky, needless to say.
Near-riot ensues, but only from the cops' standpoint. The lot was 1/2 empty before this even went down, so by this time they were just freaking out, trying to force anyone left to "abandon the parking lot immediately"!!!
So, innocent bystander me is fairly pissed off & freaked out. My vehicle is driveable but these mofo's are paying for the damage. Period.
{...many unncessary details...}
When I ask the many-eth officer when/how/from whom will I be helped in my situation, I see a black barrell-ish shape pointing at me, an angry, pock-marked, cheesily-moustached face, &, what's this?
A stream of *something* is coming right at me. Thanks certainly to my dancing skills, I dodge it, only to (have my naive ass) be informed by my sweet little bro KP, that I was just MACED!!!
Well, I always said I'd try anything once. & that was my time. The best part is, KP, future president that he be, knew even to ask the macing officer for handi-wipes, which he gleefully provided, as if macing folks is, heck, an everyday occurence.
So, you could say Finger Lakes was a memorable night for me, in every respect. But, the important key is that Phil rocked my world, despite superficial bullshit.
OH!!! The punchline to the whole joke is that the guy who got wailed against my car was busted for his dog allegedly having had bitten a brother officer. In the end, it was all a case of mistaken identity...
Love to you all & sweet dreams~
Harmony
