for the record: last time ChinaCat opened the first set was 2/11/86 Kaiser (before that, they opened with it once in 83, three times in 79, once in 73, and a few other times before that) - a VERY rare opener. nice.

You are correct Erik!

That China Cat opener at Kaiser was from the famous 5 night run (in 7 days at the battleground). Great shows!!!!

We did Saturday with an Iko opener, with a 1/2 Step>Franklin>Playin'>China Doll>Drumz: Set II opener.

Followed by Sunday - Chinese New Year, With an incredible Smokestack>Comes A Time>Drumz>Other One in Set II

Tuesday brought in Mardi Gras with a MONSTER Set II opener of Drums followed by another appearance of Iko with the Neville's also on stage.

Wednesday had the legendary Scarlet>Fire>Estimated>Drums Set II opener...

We all came back on Friday 2/14 for Valentine's Day and got an incredible Let it Grow to end Set I followed by a Set II packed with Lost Sailor>Saint>Terrapin>Drumz>Wharf>Throwing Stones>Lovelight E: Brokedown....

Awesome string of shows and one long party in Oaktown!

Correct that every "mini-acoustic" set has included Hard Rain?

I checked and it was "Looks Like Rain" at Nassau, not "Hard Rain".

However, every acoustic set has included "Peggy O".

I counted 15 chinacat openers

many in 69 and 70, the rest as listed above

I think there were probably quite a few set 2 openers as well, but I'm not bored enuf to count them now

china>rider got pushed to slot 2 quite a bit when Hell in a Bucket made its way to the front of the queue

the Boise first-set China Cat in 2004 was after an opening "Jam"....tonight was the first time since 1986 that they have opened with it outright.

That second set looks like a bit of a letdown. the last thing I want in a set II is for half of it to be acoustic. Where's the rest??

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Tom Melvin (Thom2) on Tuesday, May 05, 2009 - 08:42 am: Edit Post

I suspect that it was just Bob on acoustic for those songs, every other purely acoustic set was a separate entity with a second break. Any confirmation on that?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Richard Butze (Rbutze) on Tuesday, May 05, 2009 - 08:45 am: Edit Post

franco, your in the minority about not wanting acoustic. As far as more electric, they played 9 songs in the first set. Normal on this tour has been 7.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Ben Jones (Jonesb1) on Tuesday, May 05, 2009 - 09:03 am: Edit Post

Tom: both Bobby and Warren were on acoustic, and billy and mickey were on there smaller "acoustic" drum sets. I couldn't tell from my vantage point if Phil/Jeff were on acoustic or not.

OK...I am still a little 'fuzzy'...

First off, for those who did not like the 'list', well, I am a 'setlist' person and i will tell u that this show had it all....Why?

WARREN FUCKIN HAYNES

Warren came through HUGE throughout...(Warren) highlights:

Watchtower Into the Mystic SOtm IMAGINE(!!??!!?!!)

Oh yeah, those "Other" guys were pretty good, too..Weir came through as this show was really a Bobby fest (on the surface) - bORN cROSS eYED And HARD RAIN stand out...PHIL...3 TUNES!!! PRIDE AND BOX!?!? Thank YOU, Phil...DRUMZ was a mindmelter...

Overall, show was good- Warren=MVP (please people, love this guy...he is bringing the RESPECT and POWER tghis music deserves-ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Eddie (Edsh) on Tuesday, May 05, 2009 - 09:27 am: Edit Post

It was acoustic just like in DC except Phil was on his regular bass, if that remarkable thing can be called regular. Mini kit for Bill and congos etc for Mickey and all 6 players were set up near Jeff and Phil. The four acoustic songs were really well done.

For those who care, the acoustic tunes took time away from the electric paying in the second set. After all the music that was played just after drums the 2nd night in Philly, this set seemed a bit thin, but they sounded great and the fans loved it.

If I have this right, Warren has now taken the vocals on Days Between and SOTM the second time around. I guess there's a Warren Dew coming out west. He sang the SOTM great and strummed very loud - he was into it!

This Phil Phan thinks Bobby is playing great. Yeah he messed up here and there, but he and the band nailed the Liberty and a few others. The Iko started with Bobby on tamborine. Look to me like there was a little confusion after gdtrfb. Seemed Phil and Warren were ready for one more and Bobby was done - but I could be wrong. Before the Imagine there was a happy birthday jam - for who? The Imagine kind of just stopped instead of ending and I thought the Box was going to be Unbroken Chain, but I will never complain about Box.

Great show last night. China opener was solid as was cross eyed, then they jammed and seemed to hit a bit of a wall. Shook it off with Built and then a string of well played but unconnected songs with West LA, Miracle, Watchtower as highlights.
Good first set, but not amazing.

2nd set was much better. The 4 song acoustic was beautiful. Phil did all vocals on Peggy-o and was great. Warren's Mystic is a highlight. Tight drums and space, good but quick into Bobby starting with a tamborine in Iko. SOTM was fine, Warren sings the hell out of it, but not a fav of mine. GDRFB was HUGE!! The Imagine encore was a complete surprise, beautiful with Warren and Bobby taking verses and actual harmonizing on the chorus which worked very well. Box of rain helped the smiles reach the parking lot.

Lot scene was fine. Didn't see a whole lot of hassles. They were trying to cut down on bottles which is why beer was a tougher find, but if you pour into a cup, no hassles.

They are looking inside cigarette packs when you enter the show. FYI.

They know the show last night was a late add on and the setlist shows. I just got back from jazzfest and did not see last night........and am good with that. Much preferred to see Neil Young play the fairgrounds on Sunday for 2 hours finishing with a day in the life holding his guitar over his head getting that feedback as only Neil can do before throwing his guitar down and ripping the strings off the neck to end the song and show. He walked off as people stood In awe. Been there 12 years in a row............never saw anything quite like it. Neil walks off and 3 minutes later the skys open up and it POURS for 30 minutes. The Neville Brothers wished it had closed the Fairgrounds. They had only tepid response to Neil's throwdown. For those who know jazzfest..........In the words of the late Ken Keasey speaking for Bill Graham Halloween 2001........." AS BIG A TIME AS IT GETS'

POOR sound. I was in an ideal spot, and: little Phil or Mickey (only when the music was flowing with volume. I'm there to hear Phil, so this was a particular bummer for me), slightly more Jeff (and he was still great), no Bob, and with Bill and Warren being solid in the mix. Loud...but rock loud, not detailed-loud as I was hoping...not that open, floating feeling GD so often delivered. Maybe tomorrow will be more detailed and warm.

Insofar as set lists go, it started off with promise. Though the China Cat was messy, there's no such thing as a bad China Cat. I was hoping they'd break into a The Eleven jam, like back in '68. First half of Born Cross-Eyed was strong, but it fell apart. GOOD Pride of Cucamonga. Then three songs (even with the Wang breakout) that didn't do much for me. Show came back to life with Warren tearing into All Along the Watchtower, like he often does.

Acoustic set was great energy and good playing. Drums was INSANE. Space into Aiko, and Aiko was one of the highlights of the night (which if you keep in mind, it keeps the enthusiasm in check). Standing on the Moon and GDtRaFB were very well indeed. The encores were quality, with Box of Rain always a welcomed treat.

So, the first set was a bit blah, but the 2nd set came in with a rush of a party. I prefer things to be more jammed and taken outer limits, but this was still a solid show overall. Not much on paper.

I have heard on the Grateful Dead hours with David Gans the Dead with Melvin Seals do Imagine. It was an instrumental version. I'm not sure what year it was from and don't know if it was on stage or in the studio, maybe on Seals solo album not sure.

I had a great night Monday. The sound was kind of murky, with the vocals way low in the mix, to start the first set, but it did slowly improve and was pretty good by the second set.
I never really "got" Warren before this show. I've spent years being kind of unsure of him and then Monday night he knocked my socks off. He smoked on Liberty and Watch Tower.
China Cat was a fun opener and then Born Cross-Eyed was cool, but I just wasn't feeling it until towards the middle of Pride of Cucamonga. Miracle through Watchtower kept building and had me dancing my arse off. There was a moment during Liberty where I tears of joy in my eyes due to pure bliss out I was having, with out the assistance of any chemical aid, mind you.
The second set was great. Loved the accoustic stuff. Into The Mystic has offically made me a Warren fan. It was great seeing my wife, who was at her first "Dead" show, get totally absorbed into the music during Mystic. She was also really into Drums, so I think I have finally converted her. We'll see.
My personal highlight was Bobby leading the way on Hard Rain. I love the song and it was full of the ominous forboding and tinges of hope for a better outcome that the song needs for maximum impact. I found it ironic how the spun out hippy kid in front of me was treating the song like some kind of party anthem, when it is about an impending nuclear holocaust. What ever. He was having a good time, but I found it kind of funny.
Standing On The Moon was another beautiful stand out and helped further cement my new found appreciation for Haynes.
Imagine was a cool encore and Box is always a nice way to wrap things up.
All in all a really fun show with some outstanding high points. It might not go down as the greatest show of all time, but it was solid throughout with some definite moments of greatness.
Also, does anyone know who the woman standing stage right was that Mickey, Phil, Bobby and Warren ran over to hug at the end of show?
And, how cool was that pet goat in the parking lot? I thought it was cool anyway.

I had a total blast at both Chicago shows. What was particularly cool about Monday's show that they played exemplary versions of even tunes that I had gotten a bit tired of (Liberty, Wang Dang Doodle).
I also got my first ever Dead versions of Cucamonga and Dancin' and the breaout of Imagine!
Peace...
