Was by the venue a few hours ago. Heard JK sound checking. Not going tonite but can't wait for tomorrow and Sunday. No releases for tonite so it should be a VERY full house.

Everyone enjoy tonite and keep me posted. If they play my Dark Hollow tonite I'll be.....Waiting for it at Radio City!!!

Just home from the Orpheum. That second set was enormous. Wow. First set I thought was plagued by a lousy mix in the house. I've been to zillions of shows at the Orpheum, and I always love it for its warm sounding room, but the first set tonight was the worst sound mix I've ever heard there. But the sound, and the band, sure picked up from the get go of the second set.

The first set had the double sandwitch !!

^^ You are absolutely correct, Ed.

I'll agree that I had a hard time really getting into the first set, but the second set was FIRE. I was really hoping for a Wheel and was stoked they played it. I wish they would do away with the vocal sing along things at the end of songs like Music Never Stopped, the Wheel, etc. I don't know- do not mean to complain cause I had a wonderful evening with friends old and new.

Sometimes Derek gets it clean and loud.... other times... well, lets say I miss Healy's touch on the board. I had (expensive!) seats right down front for Radio City last year, and those little front fill speakers were so overdriven and distorted sounding, I wound up in the balcony so I could enjoy the music... Derek needs to get somebody to do walkouts during the set, but with those line arrays i don't know if he can get the coverage i was used to back in the day. Dan used to work wonders in the crappiest rooms, not to knock brother Featherstone's efforts.

Who sang Peggy-O? How was it? Second set indeed was a killer and the Cream Puff in the first was a nice touch. Wish I was there. Tonite we all know omsn is coming. It's just where and when. I like when they do it to close the set cause then it frees up the playing for the encore. I've even seen it close the first set. We'll see. Hey, how about a Cosmic tonite!? Hopeful

Cold and windy yesterday, kept a lot of people out of the park, 50+ today, should be a fine day for the park, and a few pre-game libations. See you all at Fennario for the warm up. Then off to boogie.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Sideshow Bob (Drkstrjry) on Saturday, March 05, 2011 - 04:35 pm: Edit Post

I'll try to get this review in based on show impressions only before I pollute my memory listening to the archive stream. (actually can't get either source to play - guess I gotta bit torrent it)

After a clusterfuck traffic nightmare (well isn't it always on a Friday night going into any major city?) convinced me to exit the masspike and take the green line in from Riverside - even that was a clusterfuck with literally no more room on the train after about 3 stops in - and people cramming in Japanese style - and the snow is still piled up at all the stations/along the tracks - wow it's Still Winter in New England, that's for sure!

Yes I was the old fart who phoned in the "mediocre" report on the 1st set. And I stand by that report. From my vantage point (around 12th row off to the left) it was hard to tell that the sound sucked since being right in front of the stacks sucks anyway. Did not expect much more out of the 1st set - a rusty start overall, but no suprise there - sorta classic in a way - Althea was the highlight as far as "togetherness" - Cream Puff War was an outright embarassment - total trainwreck - I don't think they even finished it - they went off into a bizarre jam hinting of Golden Road and a few other things before winding into Good Lovin' - this was the most "interesting" part of the set - bathroom break for Good Lovin' - made it back in time for the Come Together reprise/sandwich - again interesting at least - very topical considering world events (middle east, wisconsin, etc).

BUT THEN the 2nd set happened! Well it started out good and got slightly better with each song, sort of a classic early '80's set in reverse - "Crazy Fingers - Playin - UJB - (drums/space) - Wheel" wouldn't have been too out of place in the '80's - but still within the confines of "cover band on steroids" - then the transition into Other One - then the PHIL BOMB and 1st verse - still good - ok very good - THEN after the Other One 1st verse they totally warped the time/space continuum and the black hole opened up just like in the GD Movie cartoon intro where the outer space pinball goes into and re-emerges from the black hole - and when they re-emerged from the black hole, the X-FACTOR came gushing out like a Gulf of Mexico deepwater drill rig - it was one of those "1,000 teases all at the same time" jams - Coltrane's A Love Supreme being the main theme (every time they go "out there" that is in the mix) - also heard Estimated, Playin', Supplication Jam, and a few others I can't remember - then they came back to the Other One main theme then went outer space AGAIN!!!! This was like last summer's Lowell MA Other One in meandering jammyness, but went in totally different directions. NICE!!!! THIS is what I came for! Then the transition into the Dew - PERFECT!!!! This was a classic Morning Dew show in every way - where the Dew becomes the centerpiece of the show and the show focuses/comes together right before the Dew - this show reminded me of the Nassau Coliseum March '94 4th night - gotta listen to that one on Archive now. The transition into Help was either different or blown - or both - enjoyed the HSF combo - JK played some different riffs in Slipknot - funny how this combo is enjoyable after a great set like this but capping off a disappointing (to me) show like last summer's Sat Mann Phila show I'm just not "into it" even though both versions are probably equally professionally well done. Well that's just me.

So I did stand and dance (or well just spazzed around) for all of the 2nd set and most of the 1st - well as best as possible in the sardine can city that is the Orpheum - but that's what gives the place it's charm - and I think they actually spiffed up the ceiling and side wall mosaics - no more peeling/falling plaster - and when I used the upstairs bathroom during Good Lovin' the balcony wasn't rocking the way it used to - maybe they welded some gusset plates to the steel cross beams. And oh yeah, Dumbass of the Century award goes to the dude next to me - at some point there's about a dozen security dudes hassling the people in the row behind me for smoking - so what does the old fried hippy dude next to me do? PROCEEDS TO LIGHT UP A BIG FAT JOINT!!!!! - I yell at him "hey put that out" - so of course the security people then hassle ME - I'm like "hey I just happen to have the seat next to this dumbass - I don't smoke dope or cigarettes - you want a urine sample? - I'll give you one right here & now" - they left me alone after that - (and didn't even ever bother the joint lighting dumbass - go figure?).

JK is back and shredding. He had some iffy moments last couple of tours. Crowd was pretty staid for a boston crowd. Come together for a tour opener seriously? Phil threw in some thunder for the otherone intro but sweet william is turning over in his grave in the first set. Couldn't hear Jeff. Morning dew hit it but nowhere near a jerry one. Intro into good loving was good stuff. Nice second set - nothing outrageous here - always great to hear a mns, wheel, playing and uncle. Left with a nice taste for more.
