I hate being part of the unwashed masses. TXR is the first thing in 35 years that has made me feel like an outsider. Sure, elistist clubs have always existed within the family, but the music was always accessible to all. TXR has played host to some of the most amazing music lately - but only for the few who can get there. Great for the few, but sad and harsh for the many.
If they can stream it to the bar they can stream it to us all, and I'll have my $ happily ready when they do.

And where oh where are the SBD's from the Q we were promised?

Boy do I agree with Gary - I posted something similar to a GD mailing list several months ago. TXR is a GREAT idea but it breaks the longstanding tradition of the music being available in some form to the fans when it's over. I seriously don't get why they don't at least allow a few tapers in. @Gary - they released only on Q sbd, the 29th, about a month after the shows. The only place I know it can be found is live music archive.

there is a 4/39 Q soundboard that was released on archive.org

Man oh man. Don't rain on Phil's parade. He put heart n soul into TXR. Nothing stopping anyone from traveling out there. Tix not hard to come by if you know how. And they will still tour as long as they are able. TXR just opens the jam and practice sessions up to a small happy public.

"nothing stopping anyone from traveling out there"

@missmeveryday(Rtmcdo)

except money... they don't release show info except maybe a month ahead. Flights from the EC are already expensive enough. This is for the locals/richer fans only it seems to me... no sharing is not the GD way

not trying to rain on Phil's parade, just don't forget where you come from/who paid for tix to help finance this (& TRI)

>to a small and happy public.

My point exactly. And I am far from trying to rain on Phil's parade. As a long-time fan I am pleased as can be for him! He has a cool spot he has opened up like a family club and is able to play "living room" music with a variety of friends. He has a ready stage for his musician sons. I get it. I'm proud of the effort and happy for him. But I'm not part of the small and happy public. I am part of the great percentage of us who are missing out on all this nuggety music. It hurts.

As for the Q boards, the one from 4/29 is tasty, but we were promised all of them. Hell - I want sbds from every single show, and who doesn't? But we were actually promised these and I really would love to hear them.
thought it should be said is all...
Smiles!

I heard the Q Boards, other than 4/29, were horribly mixed and have major quality issues and are not available for release. Maybe they can be fixed, I dunno but I'd sure like to hear that Saturday night show. Where's the audience recording for Saturday y'all? Throw it down on etree....

Uh, Phil has brought the music to the East Coast and all over the country for 40 years. Which he'll continue to do starting next week. But if you want to see him play in a venue he EARNED and DESERVES, now you have to travel to join him. Seems pretty fair to me!! Plane ticket, bus ticket, gas money, get creative..... it's not really that hard to get to California!! Thank you Phil!!!

Wow. Interesting dynamic around the TXR "accessibility" discussion. And I must say I see both/all sides of the "arguement". I certainly don't feel like I'm in the position to EVER "question" Phil and the Band. At the same time, I would love to at least hear (but preferably see and hear live stream) the shows at some point. Perhaps TXR is considered more of a rehersal scene than a show, but deadheads enjoy any incarnation of the music. And some day I hope to get out there, but my wife and I are doing many festivals this year so it's not in the cards from a vacation/money standpoint. I do wonder how complicated it would be though to get all the logistics right...first item is tickets and then arrange everything else. But it's not like, at least right now, it's the only way to see Phil. Perhaps as the tours decrease and get smaller the TXR streaming will increase?

The discussion about access to the music has been going on for a long, long time. At the Acid Tests, you paid a dollar admission, whether you were a Prankster, or a tourist; within a few years of that happy time, there were people who thought that the musicians had sold out when they started playing halls where admission was charged and the bands were paid to perform. If you've seen the film Festival Express, you know there's a number of scenes devoted to the topic of access; there were a bunch of Canadian freaks who believed that the music should be free and they made such a stink about it that the GD agreed to play a free show in a park the next day. So this is an old story in our world, is all that I'm saying; what's really cool is that people's minds and lives are still so powerfully effected by this music in so many ways.

The issue to me is not the cost of attending shows at TXR - or that Phil has the right to do as he pleases. It's about a tradition that the band and Phil established and have followed throughout the years in every iteration and most side projects - that of allowing the music to be available to the fans when the band (as Jerry said) is "done with it." If they were taping shows for commercial release I'd feel different -but we have previously had access to basically everything they've done for the past 47 years and that worked in their favor - it is part of what made them the unique success they have been and they changed the outlook of many in the music business with regard to live taping. I'm not saying that there's any obligation for TXC to be handled the same way - but I don't understand what the reason would be for changing that at this late date.

Phil doesn't "owe" you, me, Gary or anyone anything. if he wants to put this out there he will, and if not he has that right.
It is fantastic that he has his own place & can do this!! what a dream come tru for him!
I am way out East in NJ, and i would love to go. Maybe someday...... the realization of Phil'd dream gives me somnething else to dream about doing!!! :-)

Not a question of owing anyone anything or not having his rights or dreams - it's a question of why break a long standing tradition that seems to have worked very well and even contributed to Terrpain X Roads being possible. This will be the only music in the entire broadly defined Dead canon that appears to have no chance of being completely out there where the fans can access it. Doesn't have to be free - live downloads would be fine and would guarantee that there's a record of the music available.

I'd happily pay you Tuesday for a stream tonight!
Seriously - I'd pay for a stream. Right now! Stationary camera with a decent audio feed would be fine - I'd pay for that. I'd be willing to bet that lots of us would!
Nowhere in this conversation did I read that anyone felt like we were owed access. Personally, I simply stated the pain I feel when I know I'm missing shows I will never get to hear. {Note:"Elitist clubs" was a poor choice of wording though - 'inner circles' might have conveyed the idea better.} Point is, I love this music, and it seems harsh to not have any chance to hear these amazing group efforts outside of TXR. And it ain't like the dark ages folks - the technology already exists to make listening in easily possible. I know the dancers on the streams help the energy of the show - so why not let us beam in?
I'd've paid for every night the Q streamed, I'd've paid for all four of these Furthur shows and probably every show with Larry Campbell if remotely affordable.
There was no intention of starting a dissent here either - I was just sharing what I feel.

It seems that the people that help you to the top get stepped over once you're there! I"d pay for a stream too. I don't need video, audio is fine! I'm too old to play this game and so is Phil! I love him but this just seems rather shitty!!!

I believe in the healing power of music. This music especially. As a dancer, I have always tried to be a conduit to dance light and energy, not only back to the band, but through the crowd and out into, and around, the globe. Kinda a hippydrippynewage approach perhaps, but it works. It was Jerry's energy that first took my dance outside of the concert hall and lead me to a more global meditation during the dance and celebration of the shows.
Dancing a Reiki dance along the stream tonight happily breathing the music and energy in and sending it back out...and even with the digital delay...somehow the room fades out and it is all just timeless energy, harmony and light...just a for a moment, just that flash...and that moment is everything. Made possible by a simple stream. And then the dance continues...

The following are random quotes from different people listening the stream tonight: "..sounds amazing..searching for the sound..take me there. lovin' this..." and my personal favorite, " ..off for some long desrved happiness of dancing in the kitchen."

I wasn't sure if it was me or the band that took until the 2nd set to get into it.

Revolution was fun but unremarkable. Stranger was slooww and amazing in the fact that it went way out without actually getting anywhere dynamically. Sugaree was well played, but Bobby just doesn't have the voice to do it justice. Brown Eyed, Big River, and Push were all relatively solid, with great solos from JK and JC, but just when it was about time for a jam heavy Cassidy-Birdsong or something of the like, we got the floppy Thin Man. Bob needs to meditate on "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall" before tackling any of the big wordy Dylan tunes, or stick to Masterpiece. The band was on but Bob was clearly struggling throughout trying to read each line before singing it. Then we got awkwardness and a standard Box of Rain.

Hey Pocky Way was the highest energy tune of the night IMO. JK absolutely owns the vocals and the whole band was completely smoking throughout, but then they ended it. Golden jam opportunity lost. The Esau was neither bad nor exceptional, I didn't notice any Weir'dness from Bobby, but he didn't give the strongest reading either. Again, no jam into the next tune and we're getting toward the meat of the 2nd set without anything super interesting happening aside from Thin Man, had it been well performed.

The Scarlet was good, JK is an extremely consistent performer, and whenever he leads a tune he does it with real confidence. Finally, a JAM!

Suddenly everything fell apart into dissonant, tempo-less chaos and feedback (the good kind), before working up into a fever pitch groove about 140 bpm which led into the first verse of Dark Star. Straight out of that they went into a doubletime version of the main riff which quickly went inter-stellar. JK started getting really jazzy, so Phil and Joe responded by laying down a swingin' hard bob groove. This built up to another peak and then morphed subtly into a very sweet and melodic segment which got quieter and quieter until the band was completely silent for a few seconds. Then they stepped right back into verse two of Dark Star, into a high energy Eyes. At this point I'm thinking "Where the hell was this band during the first set?"

At the end of Eyes, it seemed to me that JK and JC referenced the orchestrated jam the GD used to do at the end of Eyes circa '73-'74. I thought they were gonna really do it, but then they snapped right into King Solomon's. I love this tune so much, and like Unbroken Chain, it is a great example of JK's ability to absolutely shred where Jerry just didn't bother. IMO JK is good a guitar player on a technical level as Jerry was at his very best. "Fake Jerry" smokes Junk Jerry I'm afraid.

So now it's time for the late 2nd set ballad, and JK picks up his fiddle. This is promising(?) The band fumbled around a bit, almost sounding like a Black Muddy, but I think somebody started in the wrong key because there was definitely something not quite right. When Bobby began to sing there was a cheer of recognition, both of the tune, and the opportunity for Bob to redeem himself. Unfortunately his guitar was a little out of tune, which made it difficult for JK to get accurate pitch trying to comp to him. Bob was a little better with the vocals, but he was still reading each line pretty stiffly. JK did manage a really beautiful solo however. The tune came to a close and there was a brief pause while JK stowed his fiddle, then they launched straight into a decent Fire on the Mountain. But as it was not jammed into or out of anything another opportunity was lost. The same thing can be said for Throwing Stones, and then Not Fade Away, though all were played quite well.

Hang it up, see what tomorrow brings...
