Good morning people! What a great show last night and blessed be to our very own TaperRob who enables us. It's a beautiful thing!

Here here! TaperRob is the MAN!! Sittin at work counting the hours til showtime. Getting outta here at 1:30 & then headin to PNC. 20 minute drive from home & I don't have to drive. Gotta love it. Howza bout a Shakedown? I always seem to miss every time Furthur plays it. Well whatever they play will be fine w/ me. Head's up (no pun intended) for anyone not familiar w/ PNC. In the lot, keep any alcoholic beverages in colored plastic cups. Kind of an unwritten rule there, they can't see it they don't care. This includes beer. They WILL give you a hard time for open bottles/cans. With regards to herbal refreshments, there's a NJ State Trooper station right in one of the lots so keep your eyes peeled when partaking. Have fun all. I know I will.

Hey John (3gnl) Was at that Toronto wavy gravy ken kesey show. Didn't have the circle of gold privileges, but many favorite memories stem from that show. Circle of Gold tickets were expensive and I was pretty poor at the time. Good cause and all Seva Benefit. No Feds in the parking lot because it was in Canada. Got hooked up as soon as I opened the car door. Wally World was spinning out of control.

I was there too, then home to SPAC and I stayed. Yes, seva benefit. I had one extra left and managed to miracle a couple in with it with the pleasant security. Danny and I dosey do'd at the fence line too. Very fun date.

I was at the holloween '80 at radio city too. waxing hmmm, well I'm staying with all of them, really like my profile says though RFK '93
with Hornsby sitting in on the bench and The Weight in tone perfect 4 part harmony, one of the Portland Maine CCCC concerts Broken Down Palace when some girl was crying and hugged me saying 'this is my first show' and Bobby thanked us for being a great audience, you could hear a pin drop during every song break, and um ... hmm - probably the 'last' NYE
concert in Oakland that I was mircled in to by some dude who's friend didn't show - and said 'here, take it' - the rest is history, right?

Limit was 4 shows so I traded with the guy behind me in lie and we both ended up with tickets for all 8. Great times. I miss them.

hahaha, I don't remember you either john though yes, lots of beer and a creek, with wavy been wavy. city island was very weird yes. I drank southern comfort with a redneck dude by the river and remember taking about fighting. explaining to him that's really not what we're about while we drank more. there was also a blistering truckin' there too wasn't there? the next day was hot and I drove strait thru to home wearing 3D movie glasses while on the PA turnpike around sun up. robbie gave me a pass for SPAC, while beating everyone there, I had to cut my riders lose and go home to clean up before showtime.

Yeah, I'm thinking the 2nd set looks almost as short as the first sets. Is this to keep Bob standing or something? We know Phil can stand for a couple days without a break, so there has to be some other reason. I'm assuming every tune isn't 18 minutes long. This ain't the Q.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By WeWantPhil (Wewantphil) on Saturday, July 13, 2013 - 11:51 am: Edit Post

I was in the second section of seats from the stage. Phil didn't look or sound the least bit tired to me. Although he was a tiny bit out of focus on the big screens at the sides of the stage. I'm not sure how long the sets where but I thought they played well.

Bobby, who tends to annoy the heck out of me, was in fine form all evening. He did a decent job of remembering the words. His singing way behind the beat (as he tries to remember the words) was kept to a minimum. The lyric clusterfucks of different folks taking turns singing different parts of the same song only happened on LR Road (which started out sounding like it might have been To Lay Me Down from the tuning) was more like what they do on The Weight and less like the Help On The Way and Terrapin clusterfucks where the turn taking disrupts the whole flow. As for those clamdiggers....

I thought the song selection was nice. Truckin>Alabama was inspired, as was the Shakedown closer. Some nice spacey places in Viola & Playin'. A couple clunky transitions in the Viola Lee but only one of Bobby's "OK, everybody stop now and then...nothing...and they have to build it back up again from thin air. But again, the playing was decent for these guys.

Still too much playing with their eyes instead of their ears (waiting until everyone sees everyone else and queus the change with a nod). I'm also still waiting for John to play real lead guitar and not just play along with what Bob & Phil are playing. My feeling is that, in order for this band to improve, John has to be more assertive and pursue his vision of each song and let the rhythm guitar and bass figure out what to do around that. Right now, it's like he doesn't have the space in which to develop his ideas because he's trying to fit in and "play along" with Bob and Phil. They need to play along with him so he can craft solos that lead to energy peaks. Hope that makes sense.

The setlist above is missing a full Playin' Reprise after Viola Lee (I'm pretty sure that's where it was). I also thought the Phil playing after the Death Don't was going to be a Gimme Some Lovin, but the Shakedown was great.

Anyway, that's my take on the show and should count as some sort of actual review for those who were wanting one. In the final analysis, it's definitely worth a listen. Enjoy.

Phil didn't seem a bit tired? Okay, funny that he did not take the lead on any songs.

Thanks for posting it! It does sound good now and was a well written objective commentary.

That's really distressing about Bobby and has me still very concerned about him. I come from a 1973 vintage so the playback in my head of the very best stuff from him is around 180 degrees of this type of artistry and behavior.

JK is terrific of course though I haven't yet heard him truly nail 'the sound', meaning complete departure from rational syncopated 'song-like' Grateful Dead music where there's no cues, nods, recognition or ego's in play and it just 'happens' and omg it is so damn beautiful when it does. It sounds great that some of that did occur if only momentary through Playing - Viola. wish I was there for it.

I am sure they all still have it and with tremendous love and passion. I'm not sure anyone can answer, ever, where and when it comes or why and starts from whom if any one person on the stage though great if JK can help it along.

I am grateful to be alive while all this happened and have seen, heard, been, felt, danced and loved it for as long and as many times as I have. Its bettered me as a human being, without exception, every time.

Thanks again for the write up.

Phil was not looking or playing tired. Mentioning he may need to do shorter shows is a ridiculous statement. Go see him play at Terrapin and then try to tell me that. He has flat out said that Furthur is "just his job" and that playing at his own venue is what truly inspires him. With that said, he still brings his A game to every Furthur show.

Great show overall. I do agree with the statement that they need to stop alternating lyrics in some songs as it does take away from the flow. Only song it seems to work on is Jack Straw, but they have always done so with that one throughout the history of it

My highlight of the night was definitely Eyes. When the first verse was about to start and I didn't see Phil coming up to sing I knew something was up and then JK began singing and it was awesome! I think that was his first time singing Eyes as well. The lead that Jeff played was so good, especially with Joe Russo playing those fills causing the crowed to go wild. Then JK played his solo and that really blew me away. He started off real quite and by the end was pushing the music so heard by playing these really shrill chords and I thought the place was about to explode! Great show, can't wait for New Hampshire and Boston

Okay, so it's quite a bit late, but I found my SD card from the PNC show. Had pretty good seats & personally thought this was a good show.
