I guess this band only knows a handful of Dead tunes since they are repeating the ones they already played.

This band incarnation is so weird and choices so out there I'm only going to go to two nights at the Tower instead of all three. (Actually I have to work on Monday.)
I think that after 48 years or so, and at the age of 73.5, Phil can do any damn thing that he wants and all the power to him.
I would pay $$ to sit in a room with him even if he played no music, as this man has brought me and my family such joy that he gets a free ride in this house.
Meanwhile, here as Viola Lee fdes out once again and we go into the nether regions yet once again....who am I to complain....Let there be songs fill the air...cause Death Don't Have No Mercy In This Land.

This is some of the most creative stuff I have seen anywhere.

Can't wait to see the next three nights. It amazes me that he can take a new approach to an old tradition. This is just what I needed. New and fresh.....and Anders is the man.

Thank you Phil!

I think this band is a lot of fun and very interesting, but I'm not sure I'm willing to spend the loot, the time, the energy, and the patience to see it and these songs. Not complaining. Just thinking aloud.

this is my first time seeing this reincarnation of phil and friends, i think these guys do a solid job on the blues jams but kind of go off track with the psychedelic jams. there were some points where the segues between songs were pretty awkward (i could see the setlist on AO's stand), but when they clicked it was great. highlights from the first set were everybody knows this is nowhere and new speedway boogie, althoguh there were some real clunky moments towards the end of speedway.

Just a note based on the poster it looks like they will be doing Layla during the next show. Also, the security guards at the door are a bit aggresive.... the guy ran his hand around my waist, pretty damn gross.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By greg (Gregschmegg) on Wednesday, November 06, 2013 - 11:18 am: Edit Post

Last night was my first show with Phil's new Hot Rod band and i was pretty much blown away out of the gates. This band flat out rips, nothing short of spectacular at times. Some of the jams were so far out there i needed retain my balance (shuffle feet) or switch spots on the floor to hear it from different angles.

People who are going to these shows expecting to hear a dead set, full of seamless transitions and covered segway favorites (ie. DSO, Further, or even the "Q") are not going to understand this band.

A friend of mine said last night to me "We got a stage full of Music Geeks this time". The talent Phil pulls together for these bands never ceases to amaze me, but this one might be his best grab yet.

Jason Crosby and Tony Leone (both Brooklyn guys) are the glue that holds this band together. Ive been a fan of Jason's solo stuff and projects for years now. I first heard Tony with Ollabelle years ago and have been a fan of his back beat American folk style playing since. My only suggestion is to Let Tony Sing one because he has a great voice.

Anders and Luther are the octane that runs band. The two are both very animated on stage and move around allot while playing. I love the dynamic they bring! Hot fast guitar work, intertwined blissful jams and very fast tempo leads. Obviously Phil's foundation when designing this band. Both are set stage front with Phil and the 3 mind meld jams together. Its nice to see Phil up front again (not back in the pocket) with 2 hot guitar players like this. All three are connected through each song and from the laughs and grins getting thrown around on stage they really enjoy playing together.

Luther Dickinsin blows me away. Who is this guy and why i have i never heard him play before? His slide work is nuts! Burning hot guitar jams, serious and often sometimes out of tempo solos that take the band off direction or force them to turn on a dime. and just flat out smoking hot solos! A few times last night phil leared at this guy with an "Are you crazy?" look on his face. and he and Crosby meld together so seamlessly! If you see Luthur walk over to Jason pay attention to whats coming out of the left side stack. CRAZY JAMS! i had trouble keeping up count in my head. probably the most talented guy on stage.

Favorite last night were the Stones songs... all of them. In particular though Live With Me and Let it Bleed... crazy fun! Anders killed Death Dont have no Mercy... very well done. And a late set fun Other One China>Rider.

Go see these guys but go with an open mind ready to hear something you never heard before. Phil is following his weird again and that always winds up in a very good place. The rest of this NY run is going to get nuts and i'm so stoked for thurs>sat.

-----------PHIL!-----------

I heard there were alot of arrests at this theatre last night. they are searching you and making you take everything out of your pockets, and feeling you up and down..
NYPD were arresting anyone with anykind of drugs.
JUST LET THIS BE A WARNING TO ALL!!
BE CAREFUL

Hopefully PHIL WILL NOT COME BACK TO THIS THEATRE >> EVER!!!!

Oh and i forgot Grahame Lesh. Grahame Lesh ripped a few monumental solos last night. Its funny watching Father Phil yell at him during chord changes and missed ques.. Even better when he nails one to see Phil just glow in it. Grahame is the prodigy here. He brings allot of energy and sings songs with an all pro band (and bass player) backing him up. How do you get that gig ?!.. .lol. Looking forward to him stepping up and delivering here.

"they are searching you and making you take everything out of your pockets, and feeling you up and down.. "

same as it ever was.

the pat down, the thugs inside, the cops outside. not sure why some people are complaining about it maybe they have never been to a show in times square before. And they dont want people taking video with their cellphones but i remember them hassling folks at futhur last time for the same thing... so i didn't see anything different this time.

I been to this theater plenty of times and security is very rough everytime.
Not complaining. just warning people, be careful what you try to bring into the best buy theater.

Greg right on . Great review. Not sure this is the best Phil band as PLQ was the real deal but I was very impressed with this band . High octane for sure and Phil was rocking the joint with thunderous bass lines all night.

Great set lots of fun . More to come

Concert joe's WARNING WARNING WARNING

CAUTION CAUTION CAUTION > Bust Buy Theatr in Slime Square > ENTER at Own RISK !!!

Phil Lesh at Best Buy Theatr Nov. 5 > 9

>Last Night, WORST SCENE that I've Ever Seen !

I saw the worst abuse of power against people's basic rights, at any Theater in my entire Life !

It was a turkeyshoot for the cops + security.

200 Deadheads specifically targeted by Election Day's Bloomberg's Blitzkrieg !

Lying gov. Cuomo promised this abuse would stop > guess he can't controll doomberg.

Like shooting fish in a barrel.

Doomsberg, like his ancient counterpart, emperor Nero, would like to go out with a bang and cause as much damage as possible to the city he ruled.

Never before have I seen a theater's security guards actually working with cops to bust and arrest as many music fans as possible while they're entering a theater.

Flashback : In 1973, at Nassau Coliseum, Grateful Dead <> September 7, 8 + 9, 1973.

On th way to the show, you would see a hundred Deadheads lined up along the highway being illegally searched.

Bill Graham had the guts to announce on the second night that the Dead would be cancelling the following night, due to police tactics,

and that they would not be bringing their business back there ever > and they never played there again for ten years !

Last Year, PHISH's New Years' Eve shows at MSG, were targeted by Doomberg.

Anyone coming out of the parking lot across from the garden, was searched and often arrested. > they busted over 8oo fans.

Last Night :

Never in all my days have I seen security actually grabbing a man's testicles as he searched for weed, and then calling the bulls over to have him arrested.

Security sticking their hands in people's pants, shoes + socks, inside their belts, etc.

Front Door Security Guard acted as if they were paid a fee for each bust they secured.

If you are a band, agent, promoter or music fan, I would stay away from this skellhole !

Deadheads were specifically targeted on Election Day's Bloomberg's Blitzkrieg !

Busted over 200 Deadheads last night > if they're lucky, probably break a THOUSAND by the weekend !

Thank GOD, this is Phil's last run ever, here.

They should change the name to BUST Buy Theatr

You saw security grabbing at people's crotches and having them pull things out from behind their sacks last night ???? I know post Phish was bad last year in the parking lots after the shows -- but I have never seen security, upon simple entrance screening, pat down anything higher than the upper thigh or lower than lifting your shirt so they can see your waist band....... That's a huge lawsuit waiting to happen if caught on camera....

If they're hassling the cell phone users, THANK YOU. So inconsiderate to be talking or taking video with those things.

Nope. GF got arrested for a *roach* that she didn't even know was at the bottom of her bag...

Sloppy, but still.

I spent the weakend Phishing in Atlantic City and didn't even have my bag *opened*.

And FYI? I clean up *real* well... I don't look like the type that would need to be searched and neither does my GF...

Just sayin'.

This report if accurate seems to go way beyond taking personal responsibility for ones own actions and moves squarely into the realm of TARGETING. Your last point says it all.

Is this the corporate music entity AEG targeting the Phil Lesh & Friends Brand, yes Brand, in retaliation for signing a ground breaking contract with Peter Shapiro?
Is AEG trying to tarnish Phil and his phans?
Has the NYPD gone out of control after the recent 2nd Circuit Court decision to reject a lower court ruling regarding stop and frisk and removing a judge from that case.
Phil should take all this into consideration and craft an appropriate response.

Peg, were you at the Capital ? It's been forever since we have crossed paths, but I hope the next phil run at the Tower, if these guys pull a repeat, count me in again, as I did the 4 there preceded by a farewell to Furthur at Berzerkley. A great 7 nights and OUTRAGEOUS sets aT ALL 7. I certainly hope all's well in Pegland, and forget Jo Ann and I not. dossorama@gmail.com or call me. All's the same, except that email. XO Stuart
