What time has the band been coming on? It would be very helpful to know that they wont pull a dso and come on a full hour after the start time(very arrogant for a cover band with no opener)?

Hi everyone!

I got 2 extras for Tuesday: Loge, Row J Seats 102 & 103. if anyone is interested, please let me know secgenddhd@aol.com

I cant wait, these setlists look smoking!

And I saw DSO on Wed night, and it was annoying that they came on at 9, but not arrogant, they also played until 1... so I couldnt complain.
LET IT GROW!!!

So what're we going to see tonight? I'd say Keep on Growing early first set, Passenger to close, Casey Jones, maybe FOTD. 2nd set - 3rd verse of Low Spark, Dew, Eyes, Midnight Hour to close. Maybe a Hard to Handle, Strawberry fields...

I have an extra for Thursday, Loge row B - a buddy just backed out. I'll be there tonight, tomorrow and Thursday. Email if you're interested. Another good pre-show hang spot is uptown a few blocks, Jake's Dilemma. Amsterdam between 80-81st. Not as crowded, $2.50 pints of Sierra Nevada pale ale. Then a stop at the westside for one last brew before the show...

i'm really hoping for a jazzed-out Blues For Allah. They teased it all weekend at the Tower. I just listened to the 4/20/01 version of it. Their arrangement of it is too good to shelve! I'll be wearing my Egypt 78 Blues For Allah hebrew shirt in an attempt to make some psychic connection with the band as they figure out the setlist.

Does anyone remember the first Ratdog shows at the beacon? Not this past October, but about a year ago. The "InYourSeat" patrol was on in full force. Strange.

The show was killer!

Wow, just got back from that monster show. Not a slow song the whole night. I was worried when they started the Dew after hearing about the lack of jamming from the last version, but not to worry, they tore this one up. What a second set, it went on and on. Sweet!! And three more to go...yipeeee!!!

With all the great reviews coming in (you know who you are), and the streams provided by the kind folks at Zone radio, I don't really know what to add. Listen to the show for yourself.

I will say, however, this band just keeps getting better. This tour is the best yet. It's like evolution. Nobody would argue that Neanderthal man is a more highly evolved species than homo sapiens (they died out), and I would argue these guys have been on an upward curve from day 1, and that's high praise. Okay, we're not talking millions of years, just a few, but there's this feeling of growth to me. Solos and jams better executed, tighter singing, everything more focused. The wisdom and experience gained from every show, every note, is showing.

Yeats and Eliot did their best work in the later years, Connors played his best tennis at 38, and Jordan became a smarter player. When you work hard at something every day, it's only natural that you get better, until the body, or the desire, eventually wears out and the curve goes downward. Almost like with Jerry, although you could say that the Shining Star-era, JGB stuff was as good as anything. But how much better can Herring, and Haynes, get? In ten years, they'll be monsters. We are witnessing a new dawn, stuff that's never been done before, including late-70's Dead, which I think surpasses early Dead because of, again, evolution. Sure, there's something to be said for youthful exuberance and the creativity it spawns. Just as with P&F, you can point to individual shows in 00 and 01 where it was starting to come together (with bursts of brilliance and creativity) but overall, imho, it's better now.

Last night was skillful in that while they left wiggle room for the next three nights they managed a highly energetic show with some nice "opening night" choices like Built to Last>Passenger. The Hard to Handle>Masons just smoked and featured probably the fastest Jimmy Herring guitar riffing to date (I always think that). King Solomon's and the Dew took Wallingford's turkey day versions to another level. I didn't write anything down because someone said "EGADS" to the notion and I'm coming up a bit short on the play-by-play commentary, but listen to the show yourself and see what you think.

Anyway, to the fellow who listed all those shows from '02 he thought were weak (I didn't see Holmdel or Camden on the list, btw, and how can you diss Red Rocks, Warren's "last" shows?), I say they were debuting new material then, which was a step forward in itself. I see this tour, ON THE WHOLE, as building on everything that came previously and I'll bet everyone will be treated to something that makes them very happy over the course of the next three nights. Just my opinion.

An amazing show, Lucy while still souding like PLQ also had a Pinl Floyd fell to it IMO King Solomon almost knocked out my show buddy, it flored him. His remark"Last time I heard this song was when the GD played it at the Beacon on its release, this version is better"

My first PLQ show in 2 years, and I can assure you not my last. Amazing set list. I think it was really Warren's night to shine. Really looking forward to Thursday and Friday.

If anyone has a copy of this show, Id really love to get it. I have a fine list of shows (http:db.etree.org/admansam), or can do a BnP. Actually would love the entire Beacon run. I have a feeling the next 3 nights are going to be really special.

ok, i very rarely post and I'll admit it, last night was my first PLQ show... I stopped seeing shoes after '95 and didn't start again until Oct. '02 with Ratdog...saw TOO, The Dead and Ratdog again in the past 12 months and enjoyed all to varying degrees...Can honestly say that last night came closest to the energy I used to feel when I started seeing shows in the 70's.... What a show!!!! I'm convinced, Warren is spectacular! Had a lot of resistance when I heard the first notes of Dew but I was totally floored by it! Wish I could make more shows...Toying with tonight but don't know yet...

This was a perfect opening night for me.

The opening jam was looooong and started out kind of clunky but they hit their stride half-way into it and from there they were pretty much on all night.

First set highlights were Casey Jones and Passenger, the former having a super fast jam that got the crowd going. I thought Built to Last would be last but they came back with a ripping Pasenger to end the set. Hard To handle was great to see. Warren's vocals were excellent.

Finally got the King Solomon's Marbles I had been waiting for and it was worth the wait. Not perfect, but still very well done right out of LSD which was also very cool to see.

Phil didn't sing much which I think kept the show moving forward. Surprised that there weren't any new songs. That also kept things high energy.

Warren never ceases to amaze me.

Tremendous 1st set, start to finish. (Nicely placed BTL, between Mason and Passenger). LSD had more of a trippy feel than usual. KSM was AMAZING! Jimmy and Rob really played well together here, while Phil dropped rapid fire funk bombs. Morning Dew was beautiful, nice change from Stella and Wharf. (I love both, just nice to hear something "new".) GDTRFB>NFA brought the house down. During Encore, some problem w/Rob's equipment, lost 1st verse of US Blues. 9th show of the tour, including the 3 in S.F. This band has gotten light years better since than. IMHO, there is no better band in the land. See you alll the next three nights.

What more can I add about the Beacon opener? I think only Built>Passenger failed to live up to the rest of the night, but that is only because everything else was absolutely a top of the top shelf rendition. The transitional jams were among the most awesome in sustained energy and consistency. The trade-offs between Jimmy and Warren were memorable, especially in Dew and Sugaree. The entire second set was an instant classic (every song in it had at least one signature moment) and it will be recalled fondly by those who listen to this show for years to come. Where do they go from here? They already have hit sixth gear. I have to pass on tonight, but will take it all in on Thursday and Friday. I cannot wait!

Huh...they woke up the first set, and to add, this is where Jimmy stepped up to the plate and started knocking them out of the ball park, right up till the encore. Herrings solos in both of those tunes were effervescent, and the beginning of the epos that was the second set.

Now you know why we are all here and so nuts about this band..

It's not some quirky infatuation w/ PHIL as opposed to Bobby..

It's the way this band plays the music we love that we are so passionate about..

The thrill of getting that feeling again from music is what we here IMO are all bout..

Not that other bands can't do it..but for me and most of the pholks here..This band does it better and more consistently..

All of us Zoners have experienced what you did last night..It;s almost like being born again..

Hey Sheila-

Were you sitting at the corner of the bar in the West Side Brewery pre-show last night?

Took a ton of pictures, we'll see if any came out....

perfect perfect perfect night for me....really had a blast...front row is ALL it's cracked up to be, which Brick will find out tonight....

For me, Shakedown was completely unexpected...wanted to hear Built to Last, so that was awesome, and the Passenger was smokin...

Non-stop fun for the second set also...King Solomon's....UNBROKEN....

Two dudes tried to muscle in on our space to start the second set.....lights went down and I told 'em to hit the bricks...."come on, just be cool bro" "it's all good"....yeah right....like I'm gonna let you kill this buzz...dudes were like mid-40's also...TONS of dancing room...

All kinds of clergy in the house (Revs. Bud Greene AND Shabbazz) and Phil definitely took us to church...

Skadhi clearly wins the award for "Farthest Traveled to See a Phil Show"

Good to see: Mark Page, Bluesnote, Ed Ferbel, Lites, Skins, Peggy-O, Huckster, Dewit and her sis, Skadhi, Bud Greene, Shabbazz, Timothy Peter, Prodl and Gail, my friends Rich and Jodie and Aaron

Walking out we ran in to Schmegg and Beth and Burnzy....nice...

Left my gloves in the cab cause I had to run to catch the ferry....cop at the door of the terminal giving encouragement to "keep it going, you'll make it..."

Here's to hoping Dr. Killpatient gets well soon....always a pleasure bro....GOOD STUFF

There's most certainly a reason the thought of The Q returning to the Beacon has had many of us in a spellbound tractor beam of a dream..last night we were reminded why. For me at least, some of IT hit me with the first note..during Hard To Handle the rest came roaring back to me like the most delightful wake up call there's ever been..

every note sounds that much crisper/cleaner..NYC..the big stage..the boys took the ball, split the wedge and ran it all the way back with the fury. Warfield was good..the Philly Saturday show I saw was fine..IMO last night was where it was at..as I left the Beacon, with my head way above the cloud line, I found myself thinking what I always seem to think to myself after I leave that place.."that was the best show ever"

I was fortunate enough to somehow get what I believe to be the best seats in the house last night..front row lower balc(also there on Thursday). The only slight negative being the fact that during my "wookie stomp down" jig I sometimes felt a bit nervous about falling over. Opening jam seemed to be laced with teases..some very distinct..others simply floating along during the prelude jam..

I wasn't expecting the Shakedown but it was nice..nothing like the monster post 9/11 but nice to hear nonetheless.

Cant' beat Rob ATTACKING the keys during the frenetic end to Casey Jones

H2H..Good Lord this was as sick as it gets..bad ass Phil style..bringing it down to a whisper (((the fluttering back to life))) then stepping back into the shadows

The Mason's was a bit strange for me. The first set of Saturday Philly was so slow that the Masons set closer was vicious explosion..I guess the mid set Mason's is bound to a bit tame..least as tame as Mason's can be.

Shout to Brent was cool..

Passenger had Phil's cosmic strum bouncing through us all as we rode the wave in the lower balc

*

LSD perfect..just perfect "ahhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhh"

Jimmy went fucking apeshit during Solomon's !!APESHIT!!

Have to say Dew's a hard one for me..Warren does as much justice as we could possibly hope for..still though..I was missing Jerry in the worst way for the first half of this..Jimmy took the spotlight and ripped it..soon after..

Warren let his soul bleed all over the fucking stage

God bless him for it(and I'm not even religious)

This is the point in the show when it occurred to me how foolish the talk about "the Sunday night Philly kitchen sink show" had been. Very true that they played a lot of our favorites..the raised the bar and reset it yet again

Looking back getting a Dew->Chain seems too much to even hope for..it was all that and more

Sugaree fit in nicely

Midnight Hour had to be and I'm glad it was

GDTRFB..yep..

Not Fade had the love beaming, glowing and reflecting out of all the wonderful people who made it through the chilly winds and found what must have been the warmest spot on the planet last night

Don't get me wrong, people. I love this band. But sometimes you have to be critical.

Its ok to say mediocre.

So CDR, why would you rate this show as mediocre?

Enquiring minds want to know

My Dearest Friend Pres (and all the rest of youse)

So you needed to visit last night. Wanted to tell me something. Had to just “pop in” did ya? I’ll write the review to YOU because it seems completely right.

Wasn’t it the WORST SEAT EVER?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Front row in front of Warren MY ASS. Front row in front of a towering mass of speaker. Great view of Rob, sometimes Jimmy. From my seat I couldn’t see Molo, Phil or Warren. The only positive was that I had not only the edge of the stage in front of me, but this big brass rail with a corner joint right in front of me…..the cold smooth metal that I spun in its socket and banged against. Sweet, sweet, shuddering pain. Already we’re in sense dep land with a metal rail, yes already I’m thinking of you, subconsciously.

It was a big jam leading into Shakedown. I wasn’t so sure you were there with me YET…hadn’t clicked it. Shakedown may be for this city but it was YOU who introduced me to NYC….who took me out “too late,” and yes indeed you can’t never ever ever ever tell. But I should have known. Master of Darkness…..crackled like a thundercloud, with those dark dark eyes. Too Much too fast….how spot on.

CASEY. Rob was too much. I did have a great view of him so these Rob songs were high points for me. Rob must think I’m a COMPLETE nut though….because all these songs he would look over and I’d be crying. I’m sorry, band, I know you don’t get it. You’re channeling my old friend tonight. It’s cool. At Casey - now I knew you were with me there, Pres, I felt the shiver up my back. It’s not a happy Casey, for me. It’s the warning. It’s the one YOU SHOULD HAVE HEARD. The enormous climax…I take all my rage and throw it into a drum fest on the rail with my forearms. WATCH YOUR SPEED!!!!!!!!!

Hard to Handle. EGADS. Fuck this, man, you had to sit RIGHT ON MY SHOULDER AND SHITE, sweets? You loved this song (you only knew Pig versions, in your short life) because YOU were hard to handle and loved me because damn if I ain’t hard to handle too. It’s full of sneers and spite, this song. Test me, try me, give it your best shot…..because you don’t even know what you’re getting yourself into. Every Jimmy solo I spun through my soul. BAAAAAAAAAAby…..here I am…. :-)

Mason’s. Upbeat and shit but all about the DEAD GUY. GRRRRR. It was fun but I kept thinking back to the lessons you left me with……
“All he said, when dead and gone
Don't you weep for me”
Okay…..I’ll try…..but then it had to be BUILT TO LAST!?!?!?
“There are times when I can help you out,
And times when you must fall.
There are times when you must live in doubt
And I can't help at all….

…One blue star sets on the hill
Call it back you never will
One more star sinks in the past
Show me something built to last

Built to last till time itself falls tumbling from the wall
Built to last till sunshine fails and darkness moves on all
Built to last while years roll past like cloudscapes in the sky
Show me something built to last and something built to try…”

I’m devastated. I’ve never thought of this song in terms of you. You were always so disdainful of corny effort and crapped out silliness. Being too earnest – ah you were way “too cool” for that. But I know better…about you…and about myself. I have to try now. I have never stopped trying, my friend.

So, I think the set will be over after BTL; I walk out of this awful seat. People have been rolling into my space all night and while people are encouraging me to move behind folks on the front row, but I don’t want to wook someone’s space, plus I would have to be BEHIND someone and I have this cool rail. But enough….JEEEZ…BTL??? It’s too heartwrenching.
And as I hit the lobby I hear Passenger. I runnnnnnnnnnnn back to my seat. (Not helped by the usher who insisted I bring my ticket down to the level of his flashlight. WTF?!!?!?) I love this song. A Raging Beast With Nothing To Hide…..I know ALL ABOUT IT.

Shine on
Glowing
Brief
And Brightly…….

My dear dear friend who is gone too long. You ARE an angel. Energy may disperse across the world at large but for one moment the band brought you all back together. And I miss you so very very much.

Set break. People can tell I’ve been crying my eyes out. I don’t know what to tell them, I can’t launch into old stories of my exboyfriend who ODed over 12 years ago, I mean, right hon? I’m already in a total clusterfuck headspace. I get a drink and go to my awful seat and sit there. Not to say I didn’t see lots of nice people…..Bones, Lites, Schmegg, Finn, Prodl, Gail, Two Bears, and eventually Peggy O and Taperrob who give me good love, and then GT who actually saved my break. I’m spinning in my head, thinking all about the friend I lost, and all of the whatifs that go with that, and she knew enough to JUST KEEP TALKING TO ME about nice things until I snapped out.

Until the Music Started.

Second set. Jam>>Lucy. Nice. I’m wondering if maybe it’ll just be the first set about you, Mr. Prescott. Great Lucy. I am over by GT and LT and NOT in my seat….so I see Warren sing. This is good. THE MARBLES. They were so fine. I almost can’t enjoy it as much as I should because something about the jam is bringing Pres back into my realm. I start to cry, weep and finally a person (an usher?) comes up to me and asks if I’m alright. Maybe, but it’s not your concern. “Am I sure I’m alright????” NO JESUS COME ON – but I’m SURE I’m leaving this aisle as you’re ALL IN MY FACE!!!!

Dew. I go to my seat. I can’t see Warren. But I feel him, I feel Phil. Pres, you couldn’t let it be. You took me to my first show….which was my first Dew. You want me to hear this and think of you.
I lose myself in it. I don’t know WHAT TO DO. The young man moans, the baby cries, and all of those people I’LL NEVER SEE (makes me think of PZ quickly) and NONE OF IT MATTERS. I’m a little wet dishrag of swirling soul….nothing matters….a gorgeous Dew. Best since Jerry, right, Dewit. The Joan Jones one was wonderful but this was wiggy good. AND I COULDN’T SEE WARREN!!!!!! It’s an added dimension making me think of YOU, my Dead Friend…who I feel and sense but never see. It’s a strange and very powerful spatial analogy.

And now what!?!?! UNBROKEN CHAIN.
“…Looking for familiar faces in an empty window pane…
…Roll you down the line boy, drop you for a loss
Ride out on a cold railroad and nail you to a cross…
…Out on the mountain it'll drive you insane
Listening to the winds howl…
Unbroken chain of sorrow and pearls
Unbroken chain of sky and sea
Unbroken chain of the western wind
Unbroken chain of you and me…”

Nice version. I can’t get out of my head that my friend is SPEAKING TO ME.
Sugaree. It’s not fun. It’s Bittersweet. Forget you knew my name, my darling….and never tell them you knew me. Shake it shake it shake it.
Midnight Hour. Nice. I can actually dance to this. Back to earth. However, ome drunk guy has now gotten all in my space in the front. Pres my dear – you’re laughing, and I even have to laugh back.
Don’t Want to Be Treated this Old Way NO DOUBT. Get this freak Out Of My Space. YES DOOD I know it’s a nice dancey tune but I’M NOT IN THE MOOD. I’m Feelin BAD. I have no time for these theatrics.

Beautiful WBYG breakdown (which the GD always did in this song, if not so pronounced. I see it on set lists like people aren’t expecting it or something. I’m expecting it.) And the coda is all about my poor dead best friend.
Lay Down My Dear Brother
Lay Down and Take Your Rest
Oh Won’t You Lay Your Head
Upon Your Saviour’s Breast
I LOVE YOU
BUT JESUS LOVES YOU THE BEST
And I bid you goodnight
Goodnight
Goodnight

I miss you.

NOT FADE AWAY
Holy fuck
Exactly.
Candace lights up the whole Beacon. I look up at Skins in the front row of the lower balcony swinging his curly locks and I smile and laugh out loud. People around me who have watched me weep all night are shocked. What does she see up there? A few look and are dumbfounded….I bet they think I see pink elephants. Noo, just my friend Skins, who I love so much. You would have liked him, Pres. Probably. ;)

But the drunk guy in front of me who wanted me to spin out to GDTRFB now has a song with lyrics he can act out to get my attention. “I try to show you but you drive me back.” HA HA. Last straw when he hits the baseball cap. I’m out of there.

My love may not fade away, but I hope I never sit in AA Seat 12 again. I need to SEE PHIL AT THE CONCERT. I have discs where I HEAR him. At the show I need to SEE HIM. And Warren. Jesus. I NEED TO SEE WARREN.

But everything for a reason and I was so happy to get Rob and Jimmy moments. It was about something different for me last night.

Thanks to all the Zoners. I think I will be in a better place tonight.
I am sorry if I caused concern. Years of practice…pretty good at taking care of myself.

And Pres, since this is to you….thanks for dropping by last night. I’ll never know WTF happens to dead people until it is too late, but I felt you in my heart last night and I will never forget that you came to visit. I feel like a part of you is at peace, something you never knew in THIS life, and that makes me sleep easy.

Onward to Night Two --- The Beacon was divine as usual.
ROCK OUT NEW YORK
And RAGE ON PZ

Xoxoxhuckle

(oh and btw dewit….you may say it was the best second set of the tour but please. That’s an odd statement to make considering you left Philly early Saturday and didn’t go to Sunday’s show. Are you counting SF too???? I think still that the best Second Set was Sunday Philly.

Last night no slouch though.)

((((((((((((((((((AM DEW))))))))))))))))))))))))))

>So what're we going to see tonight? I'd say Keep on Growing early first set, Passenger to close, Casey Jones, maybe FOTD. 2nd set - 3rd verse of Low Spark, Dew, Eyes, Midnight Hour to close. Maybe a Hard to Handle, Strawberry fields>

Props to Alex Pozzy, he called Passenger first set closer, Casey Jones in the first set, the Dew and 12AM second set, and hard to handle.

Another observation from the front row:

When standing at the edge of the stage, it is the perfect height for "air keyboards"....

Rob and I raged out some pretty good duets last night, if I do say so my damn self....

1st set was up and down- mellow shakedown, Casey Jones was SICK- they kept speeding it up at the end and it just kept going faster and faster (a la 70-72).
Solid hard to handle (though not quite Pigpenesque)- Masons Children was probably the Strongest song of the set (its one of my favorite PLQ songs and they owned it!!!)
Well played Built to Last, but no fireworks. A great Passenger was highlight #3!

2nd set was argueably as good as any set of music played by any band any night (and its only the first night- Phil remarked after the show something like- "I don't know whats gonna happen the rest of the week ?????)
Very cool LSD followed by one of the Greatest King Solomons Marbles EVER!!!! (how cool is this song? this is another one they've taken and made their own)
Morning Dew was Epic!!!- Jerry would have been proud. These two were probably the peak of the set, but it just wouldn't stop- Unbroken Chain kept the HUGE groove going.
Warren rocked Sugaree. And they laid down the FUNK in a jammed out Midnite Hour>>>GdtrfB. NFA kept the kids dancin' in the aisles.

Welcome Back PLQ !!!!!!

Amazing show last night. That was my 10th PLQ show and I think the playing last night was the best I've ever heard them. It was the perfect show for me. All the stars were alligned. I went through hell on Sunday trying to get to the Tower only to get there during the set break with my finger in the air for over an hour only to go home dissapointed. I was even more dissapointed after I read the setlist for Sunday. Last night made up for that disaster. It was simply incredible. The setlist wasn't anywhere near as grand as Sunday, but the playing was so exceptional, that it didn't matter what the band played. Question for the people who went to the Tower and went to the Beacon last night. Which show was better? Last night at the Beacon or Sunday at the Tower?

Hey, disagree with me about the Built>Passenger closer, but I have heard them treat both better. They were not bad, so don't get me wrong, but I think everything else was among the best of each rendition. I had a fellow next to me who I did not know say something during Hard>Mason's that while he missed Jerry the simple fact was this was right there with anything the band did while he was with us, as in Warren treat's these songs with such great care, you cannot help but respect and admire what he does with this material. I said, I would go that one better, as this band has no boundaries, as the Dead unfortunately had grow on them as they matured. There are no rules anymore (Jerry song/Bobby song/Jerry song/etc and other setlist routines that grew tiresome) and they can go in any direction and stop and turn on a dime. Their consistency is simply jaw dropping and you cannot ask for more from a group of musicians. These guys are surpassing my expectations almost every time out. On the way home I listened to Dick's Picks 30, the Bo Diddley track #4 jam and the How Sweet It Is and the Are You Lonely For Me Baby. That is stuff that stands the test of time. This will too.

Huck, I think I was standing right next to you at the show. I was dancing in the aisle in front of the PA speaker stack right at row AA in the blind spot where you couldn't see Warren. Were you wearing a "Got Phil?" shirt? I was wearing a white shirt with a Red Chinese dragon on it and dancing hard throught the second set.

We told him it was wierd seeing him on "the other side of the stage" for once, and he concured with us and got a laugh out of it. He told us, "im just a fan" and looked over toward barracos keys and set up then said to us "ive been a fan of that guy for a long time"..and we all laughed..bullshitted about the free tuesdays @ the wetlands and time passed...YEAH BABY! homegrown NY!

Good way to start off the run last night. I too thought it was odd that there were no TABA songs. And only one song with Phil on lead vocals! I might be in the minoirity here, but I really am looking for many more Phil vocal tunes in the nights to come.
I thouhgt the morning dew>unbroken was great, however, the jokers sitting next to me were really pissing me off during this part. Luckily, my roomate noticed this and switched places with me and I believe pretty much shut that dude down. It was cool that in my same row were Burnsy and Rev. I had a good time meeting up with a bunch of zoners and look forward to running into more of you all in the days to come. Especially good was meeting up with Brett! Thanks alot, bro - this site definitely kicks ass! :-)
In any case, I'm already looking forward to tonight. BRING IT ON PHIL!!!

this was the last show of my personal Phil tour (unless someone wants to miracle me Friday night Beacon tix :-) )

It took my friend Dave and I a while to get into the city. He decided to drive and it took us about 2 hours to get through the Lincoln tunnel, but at least we had discs from PLQ 4/20/01 and Phish Hampton03 to keep us sane. Once we got near the venue we had trouble parking. We ended up self-parking in valet-park garage (it was so poorly marked) but eventually rectified the situation with the confused and barely-English speaking attendents there.

It was biting cold and windy outside, but I was surprised to not find a single vendor, wookie w/ dog or any kids with fingers in air. Last time I saw the PLQ there (12/1/01) there was a brimming lot scene outside but I guess 'cause it was a weekend, a soldout show and strangely 60 degrees out.

I hadn't been to the Beacon since Spring02. I forgot what a wonderful whimsical venue it is inside. The crowd on the floor seemed VERY middle-aged. I think I was the only 20-something in my section and even Dave (my 40-something friend I went with felt weirded out by the crowd.) I didn't see ANY dreadlocks on the floor and actually saw a lot of shirts and ties on folks who looked like they came right from work. During the setbreak i found more kids and folks my age upstairs but the crowd still seemed predominantly of middle aged "straight" people.

Anyway, I found my way to a nice triangular dancing space by the wall on Warren's side near the single lone "H" section seat. After the Tower run I was surprised how mellow security was. No pat down or search whatsoever. People were smoking cigs and bowls openly and even passing across the aisles. Dancing anywhere was cool as long as there was a little room left to squeeze by in the aisle. And it was easy to sneak all the way up front during the second set to the aisle near row AA. I could only see Jimmy and Rob from that vantage point but the sound was crystal clear esp. Phil's bass. The security guard in our section seemed like an old Deadhead. He was half-dancing to the tunes. He looked like he should've been a roadie for the band. It seemed people in the crowd knew him. Folks were hugging him and shaking his hand. He actually shared a cigarette with a dancing girl (I figured they were supposed to at least keep the semblance of "no smoking" preserved.) And during the LSD set 2 opener that same dancing girl grabbed him and for the next 2 or 3 minutes he willfully danced arm in arm with her.....crazy!

Ok, the music. the first set-opening jam was the highlight of the set for me. It seemed a lot longer than any of the Tower opener jams and had some great loud drums and peaks and valleys in the sound. It seems a lot of the opnener jams are warm ups with the band just sticking to a simple groove on cruise control until the first real tune. But this jam was definitely exploritory. I couldn't pick out any teases or hints until the Shakedown teases started near the end. The Shakedown was good but not raging. They'd just played it 2 shows previous but I wasn't complaining. A great jazzy jam then took off and lead into a tight Casey Jones with the mad accelerondo at the end. It whipped me into a dancing frenzy. This was my first full Warren Hard2Handle. I didn't recognize what they were playing until Warren started overtly playing the melody. I liked his version, different than the Pig, Black Crowes or Otis redding versions. I really liked the jam into Masons: Jimmy brought things down very quietly and then all of a sudden exploded into loud fast runs leading up to the Masons' intro. We then got a sweet Built to Last, though Warren almost missed his vocal entrance. The set-closing Passenger was high-energy but had a strange trail-off ending. After the song ending Jimmy continued playing bluesy-riffs., I dunno if he was trying to start something against Phil's wishes but after about a minute, silence fell upon the stage and Phil made the setbreak announcement.

A good first set, but it still left me wanting. esp. after Saturday and Sunday in Philly.

set 2 review in a moment....

Holy fuck
Noo, just my friend Skins, who I love so much.<<

Man I love this story..the loves most definitely right back at ya Ber. Hope we can sit together for a least a set before the run is done. Looking down at you and on the right and SI on over to your left was pretty funny. Sucks to hear your spot wasn't that chill, you should have flipped the bird to the douche bag acting out Not Fade before your departure..I wonder if he acted out US Blues as well :-)

ok set II:

I was up from on Warren's side in the aisle (where you actually couldn't see Warren at all.) I was dancing with/near two cute girls. As a mid 20s single guy, hanging out with cute dancing girls always boosts my show experience. There's always that promise of connection: a shared smile, maybe a hug, a kiss, a cool conversation and perhaps even the start of a lovely new tour friendship. And even if not a word is said I still get little heart flutters watching people twirl, blissed out. Well the 2 girls I was with were fun. The blonde, Opie, and I did some fun dancing, ducking in and out of each other's space. And the other girl, Juliana the tall brunette had the prettiest smile I've seen all tour. I hope I run into her again.

Ok, yeah yeah, yeah. the music

the Lucy in the Sky opener was well played but PLQ never really jams out on this tune and I prefer it tucked in the middle of something. I like rocking openers and this one just sort of floats warmly. and there ends my only gripe with the 2nd set.

The band did an interesting vocal reprise of LSD before the post song jam kicked in. I'd never heard them do it like that before. The jam starting featuring Molo thunder early on. I almost thought we'd get a full out drumz, but then the band kicked in with King Solomon's (or Stronger Than Dirt or whatever you want to call it) This was my first live version and I was impressed. We danced hard in the aisle. And just when I thought they were about to end it, Rob jumped in with a rippin' solo and took it further! Needless to say, they had to towel themselves off after that one.

The Morning Dew that followed was excellent. This is the first time I heard Warren do the vocals. The other time I saw it was opening my first PLQ show 8/2/01 and much as I love Phil and his quirky singing, he just can't hit the level of emotion with his voice that warren can. But for Dew, Phil stuck to what he does best doing powerful bass runs and a few bombs while Jimmy and Warren went up and down their fret boards. Looking back into the crowd it seemed clear that anyone who had doubts of Warren sining such a "sacred" jerry tune was won over by this version, fists in the air sing "I guess it doesn't matter ANYWAAAAY!"

I think it was during Morning Dew that the girl Opie crawled up on stage. I think she was just carried away by the music with visions of dancing on stage like the "twirlgirl" at Winterland 10/74. Security immediately pounced upon her and brought her down onto the floor again. At any other venue she would've been out on the curb in 2.2 with a five year ban and bar from the theatre but here they let her go and she continued to dance on up front in a place that was nowhere near where her actual seats were. The lady in the aisle next to me turns and says "Only at the Beacon!...I love this place." Still, Opie's move seemed a bit stupid and distracted me for a while. But I guess sometimes the music just carries you away...

And then we got the song Phil sings best, Unbroken Chain. It had a raging midsong jam and the line about listening to the wind howl resonated with me with such a brutal NY winter night outside. The jam at the end of the song was shorter than other versions like the 9/25 Warfield and soon gave way to a bluesy jam that hinted strongly of Cosmic Charlie. It would've been perfect placement. There was a better build up to it than at first night Tower. But suddenly the band tumbled into Sugaree. Initially I was disappointed because I figured it was the set-ender and I'd just heard it in Philly but this version was great. It made me love the song again and I could care less if I'd just seen it 3 shows before. And I was even more excited when the band took the energy of the Sugaree climax and busted right into Midnight Hour. It made the Beacon feel like a party. I made a note that the tune featured some "huge bass" before it evolved into GDTRFB. Another repeated but perfectly played so I was blissfully booty shaking. I figured we'd get a AWBYGN closer but just as they got to the coda of the tune Molo's drums went into over drive and we got a raging NFA!!! Everyone singing, everyone dancing. Right before the final vocal reprise the band did a cool jam that kept the Bo Diddley beat but melodically sounded completely different than NFA.

Before the encore, the crowd tried to get THE CHANT going but we all couldn't get in sync. It actually sounded cool fore a moment when there were 3 or 4 different groups at once clapping and chanting "you know our love..." it was like a weird disorienting echo.

Initially I figured the encore was gonna be a rarity or a bust out since Barraco waved his hands madly to get the band to hold off so he could find some lyric sheet or other paper. But instead we got a US Blues (which actually isn't too common with PLQ.) Now that we're a little bit past 9/11, it no longer would come across as a meathead blind patriotic tune (I think that's why Phil and Friends shelved it for most of 2001 and all of 2002) It now sounds again like the statement of happiness among a weird political climate like when it was written, during the 1970s Watergate era. The version was bouncy/dancey and was only marred by Rob's vocals being completely absent from the mix for most of the first verse. During the jam the bnand seemed to switch keys for just a few bars as if they were just testing wach other out to see how far their group mind could go.

And thus ended a very fun show. #14 for me with the "Q" My friend Dave called the second set "historic" and both of us hope we'll get a Phild free SBD release out of this show.

Maybe I can tempt myself into going again on Friday....

if you're going, enjoy the rest of the run.

>Going Down the Road Feeling Bad and Mason's >Children were both played on Saturday in Philly. >(Mason's was a highlight of the show). Doesn't >it seem just a little early to bring them back >on Tuesday?

It does seem very soon, which is so cool. I had written off any chance of seeing Shakedown, GDTRFB, and a few others because they just played them. I was so pumped to hear them, and now it makes calling tonight even harder because they could play pretty much anything! I bet rather than worrying about what they just did, that they look at this as a 4 night run and they can use the entire repetoire in any way.

That being said, here's my call for tonight. I was on fire with the calls last night, so hopefully these will be on too!

Definitely a Keep on Growin' or Sunshine early, and probably both. Fantasy, Alligator, Strawberry Fields, Wheel -> Low spark v3 -> Wheel, definitely Eyes, and the all-important 2nd set closer will be Viola and/or Golden Road. I'd love to see Lovelight or Cumberland to close the first set, but I bet it's Cosmic.

If they break out anything new for the tour, it's Sittin', Till the Mornin Comes, or Leave me Outta this.

Mellow double-encore, with a new tune first, then something well known like Mystic or Soulshine.

>>>>>AROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
sparkler thursday

Nice Huckster. Good to see ya' back in good spirits sister...

So sorry to see you bummin even the slightest last night. I was super pumped for my seats as well (orch BB way on the right) but they were also too far to the right, cutting off my view of Warren for most of the show. You truly were right SMACK in front on that HUGE stack of speakers and although the sound was awesome up there, I'm sure visuals (or rather almost TOTAL LACK of visuals) in setting of high hopes anticipation of FRONT ROW seats would have likely killed my buzz big time as well. Not to mention the plethora of jerks who just bullied there way up to the front row invading your space further. Glad to see you come back strong in the 2nd set which was fucking... HUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Lucy in sky-Living is easy with eyes closed. Awesome trippy, smooth, mellow, sweet blue and purple lights, way to get the ball rolling and then out of nowhere BAM

King Solomon's was SUPER TIGHT, totally fun, funky, energetic, syncopated, jazzy, and really got all of the band members wheels turning for what was to come. Jimmy was firing on all cylinders, Phil and Molo totally locked in, and Warren playing fat pronounced rhythm until he took a fat solo toward the end. They were all jamming fiercely and the STOPPED this one on an absolute dime, and the crowd roared with excitement and gratitude.

Then the highlight of the show...

THE DEW (ps-thanks again Huckster for the stealth handoff which basically MADE the 2nd set for me :-) )

I read the reviews from Oakdale and was wondering if we would get a FULL JAMMING Dew.
Well we got one and THEN SOME. Warren sang it like a champ. The middle jam was executed to perfection and the final jam started with one major build, then the band brought it down, and then the built againg this time to fever massive intensity. At one point I was watching Phil as the band was going apeshit, and I swear he was SO PUMPED just egging them on like, OK FELLAS THIS IS HOW WE PLAY THIS TUNE, LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT MORNING DEW IS ALL ABOUT. The band responded in typical Q fasion by stepping bigtime AND THEN SOME and the crowd just starts totally freaking out feeding the furnace adding to the energy, completing the cycle, and sending the ship into the absolute stratosphere where it would remain for the rest of the show, and then truth hits and we all realize, "I GUESS IT DOES'NT MAAAATTER ANYWAAAAAAY!" but it does matter because the chain would be proven to be...

UNBROKEN-This was the point in the show where I was like, wow, you have GOT to be kidding me, can it get ANY better than this? Unbroken was played flawlessly. Phil sang it with character, strength, and taste. The jamming was insane. The middle jam was very very intense. Then after the final vocal the OUTRO. This has become my favorite part of this tune. ALL WARREN. The man is back. He has obviously been hurting with the flu, but I think he just may have finally kicked it. Blue light rain (great lights candice) bathed him and he just took the ball and ran with it. Great closing jam to the highlight of the show (highlight being KSM>DEW>UBC).

The rest of the show the band maitained this high energy. They had already hit Lightspeed, was deep in the vacum of frictionless space just kept on going. Every song was huge. Sugaree AWESOME, Midnight hour FUN, GDTRFB (best version I have seen the Q do by far), and finally Not Fade (totally appropriatte). This part of the show was very Warren heavy. A MASTER SLIDE player just letting it flow through him. US Blues was a perfect way to end the show, even if the begining had its minor technical difficulties.

Couple closing thoughts.

This band keeps getting better and better, I thought Tower could not be topped, no longer think that at all (RIGHT ON LITES!)

MOLO is insane, what a worker, a true TANK/TECHNITIAN, MT. SAINT MOLO on fucking drums

Jimmy-a true guitar VIRTUOSO, never ceases to amaze me, get this man a MICROPHONE, let's hear him sing.

Rob-having the time of his life up there, giving us all the time of ours, his command of the material and his playing is AMAZING

Warren-great to see him back feeling better. He is back to a 100% but not back to typical 200%. Still picking his spots (Flawlessly). Look out Beacon he is getting stronger and will rock the next 3 shows merciliessly.

Phil-An absolute inspiration. THE MAN. THE LEADER OF THE BAND. Have never seen him play this well or have so much fun up there. Thank you, thank you, thank you...

Great to see Huck (as always), Schnee, Peggy O, LITES, Paul Prod, GT, Kevin (Dancin Dude) and many others. Hope to see more of everybody. This is only the beginning.

See you all thurs and fri....

>>>. Warfield was good..the Philly Saturday show I saw was fine..IMO last night was where it was at..as I left the Beacon, with my head way above the cloud line

Huck, in response, best second set, and in many ways the best show I have seen...We had room, I should have channelled you a bit...the carthesis may have served you well, for my dear, sweet, beautiful friend, that is some of the finest writing you have put forth on this site in a shitload of time...

A hug for you tonight.

>>>It was cool that in my same row were Burnsy and Rev. I had a good time meeting up with a bunch of zoners and look forward to running into more of you all in the days to come.

I was next to La Rev, and I missed Burnzy.

Skadhi is in town. Tonight, the night to try and get some candids of the Zone at work, or play at the Beacon.

King Solomans is my most favorite of all Phil tunes; the only tune Molo could do on his own, so imagine my shock on the first Jimmy rip into the abyss, and the Stunning, Shocking Perfection of that song, the song that showcases the whole and the individual parts. My opinion, that tune could be nominated for best live song at a show this year. WOWZA.

Seemed to me that they duplicated four songs from Wallingford. IMO, they should mix it up more so that people that went to Wallingford and skipped Philly get more of a variety.

I just went to my PHIRST Phil show this past Tuesday, at the Beacon... Oh my god, they were PHENOMENAL!!! I can't believe I've never seen them before, I had nooo idea what I was missing... none. IMO, they BLOW away the, "Dead" of today.... just blow them away. Those guys last night had THE most incredible energy I've seen in a while.. (just saw Phish and DSO in the same week..) The first extended Jam with it's jazzy almost latin feel, ERUPTED into a crazy crazy Shakedown. Lucy and the Sky with Diamonds sung by Warren??? Oh my god, that gave me permanent goosebumps! The whole show was like a spiritual experience... I just couldn't believe how they could build, and build, to the point where one would think they could not go any further, and they would raise it up another notch from there! Ahhhh, it was truly an enlightening experience, and I am Phorever a Phan from this moment onward. I can't wait to see them again!!!

Peace all...

Lisa

I'm always stoked to see a PLQ show because of Warren (the hardest working man in rock). But it was Jimmy's playing that absolutely blew me away during Tuesday's amazing Beacon opener. He really steps up and seems to enjoy the center-stage spotlight in this band, unlike in The Dead where IMO he holds back a little so he doesn't upstage the original members. His fingers were flying on Tuesday, especially on King Solomon. Thanks to Phil for recognizing and showcasing talent like Jimmy and Warren. Can't wait for Friday.

BTW, anyone know why Warren has a music stand in front of him? Looked like he was reading lyrics for some songs. Or does he need the music? I would have guessed he could play every note of every song with his eyes closed.

I believe Warren's stand is for lyrics. He seemed very interested in it during Stella :-)

It`s been a year to the day since this incredible show and I still listen to this show all the time. This has to be my all-time fav P&F show! I`m still "grateful" to the mystery girl behind me who gave me her ticket stub after I lost mine. I tried trading the guy next to me some nice goods for his, but he wouldn`t budge. I remember her saying I have every ticket from every show I`ve ever been too....same as me. I got up to leave thinking great now I`ll never have the ticket from this sick show and she handed it over to me with a smile. Just wanted to say thanks to whoever you are! Anyways, this show just encompasses how sick this band was when they were together....I just wish there was another Beacon run this year. Phil....keep this band together...you guys were just plain magic when you performed!!
