Well the preseason is now officially over - yeah, they played 1-1/2 first sets the last 2 shows but that was merely Spring Training - now it's time for the BIG LEAGUES BABY - they're in the heart of the BEAST OF THE EAST and it's time to BRING IT ON BIG TIME!!!!!

Yes a double post but it HAD TO BE SAID!!!

Whatevah Bob,Pine Knob was wonderful, that and PRIDE OF CUCAMONGA is all I am gonna say. They can play whatever they want from here on in,but I can finally die happy after seeing that tune live, and it was dead on too, everything was just perfect.

If anyone is interested I have compiled a spread sheet of the number of times each song has been played this summer tour (upto and including Blossum Center in OH). It has two sheets, 1) By Song Title, 2) By number of times played.

E-Mail me if you want a copy.

John Kerry in on that Help on the Way opener?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By elsha (Elsha) on Saturday, July 31, 2004 - 03:25 am: Edit Post

Here is a review of the 1st Boston show. I was center behind the seats but in front of the last section of seats. I never sat down but I never usually do. Warren finished up at 6:45. Some highlights were One and Soulshine. The Dead came on after a fairly short break. Security inside was pretty tight but wore off as the night went along. Where I was we danced our asses off all night. Anyways it did not take them long to launch into Help on the Way. You could tell that they meant business. The Help on the Way was solid and a great warn up. Just about everybody was grooving to it. The rest of the Help>Slip>Franks was tight as well and everyone cheered when they went into Franklins since that is not automatic these days. The whole thing was well paced, not rushed. They took their time developing Slipknot. The sound was great from where I was which was pretty much dead center. There was no break between Franklins and Truckin. A quick jam and they were off into Truckin'. I really liked that transition. Anyways the truckin' was sweet but not over the top in my estimation. As usual I thought Phil could have been turned up a tad but the sound was excellent. It was well played and no real mess-ups. It lead into a bouncy Love Supreme Jam which carried over to the Me+Bobby Mcgee. I really enjoyed this but a few people took it as a chance to rest for a second. Strange world followed and this is the first time I heard it live. I liked it. It jammed. Jimmy was jamming all night I thought. He seems to be settled into his role. Everyone was on their game. I can't think of any complaints. The first set then really took off (as if the help>slip>frank was not enough). I picked up on the Wheel cords and it was a solid version. Again like truckin' not over the top in my estimation but solid enough. Candyman was simply awesome. I think Bob does more than just keep this song going. I know people don't like it when he sings Jerry songs but Bob has this one down. It was great to hear and the place seemed to dig it. Just a little light smoked. It was seriously jammed. It was one of the highlights of the first set I felt. The place was rocking and where I was we were basically moshing. It was jammed that seriously....lol. Get the tape. The U.S. Blues was welcomed obviously being the theme of the tour and this version did not disappoint. It rocked and closed out an awesome first set.
The Dead took their time getting back. Before they got on stage the moon was just shining away. It looked like a little sun. Maybe this is why some songs in set 2 werepicked. Anyways the Terrapin had the whole place rocking. It was the full on version. They jammed it to sometimes taking it back down and then bringing it around again. They did this a few times. It was jammed, long, and great to hear with the moon shining in full view. St. Stephen dropped like a bomb and was solid. Not to short either. They did the william tell bridge and then into the eleven. The Eleven was long and well played. Like Terrapin they kept building it up. The sound was great and I could pick up Phil's bombs well. Bob's voice was also solid and sounded rested. This show is a must get not only because of the song selection but because everyone sounded great. Anyways, after a stop in play, they eased into a nice Scarlet. It was played at a nice pace and was danceable. Fire came quickly and ended fairly quickly. Mickey sang it but I was glad to hear the instrumental. It was very solid but ended quickly as Bob took his guitar off and left the stage and everyone else followed. Drums was ok. I have heard better. I could not really find anything to latch on to in drums that was danceable but the lighting was great and so I just took it in as did most others. Space was short and once again Mickey came up behind Jimmy and messed with his guitar while he was playing. I think sometime when Mickey is doing drums Jimmy needs to sneek in and bang away on his drums just to keep him humble...lol. Space seemed a lit rushed and I got the sense there was a rush on. Anyways I picked up on the first chords for Mountains of the Moon and I was pysched. I love this tune with Phil singing and also beause I'm a sucker for a surpise song out of space. Phil did a great job with it and I found it danceable but most people seemed a bit put off by it. I was one of the only people around me who really seemed glad to hear it. It went well with the full moon to. The China>Rider got everybody up and boogying again. The China>Rider was very good especially the Rider which rocked. The only thing is it was quick and I was wondering if there was a curfew problem. Still it was great. Phil asked for our organs and Bob asked for our votes then we all danced to a real sweet Ripple which capped a great show. Back to Boston tomorrow and then SPAC, Hartford, Scranton..........peace.

Listening to the stream and reading the reviews or should I say review by Elsha. Music sounds really good and the review reads just as well. I Am so looking forward to getting these shows on CD.

I wonder if the boys are videoing the shows for posterity. Wouldn't that be great.

There are times when you KNOW going to a show, no matter what, was the right thing to do and you fuck it up anyway.

J, J & S....I hope you had enough extra fun to spill over into my cup.

Lordy, lordy, lordy and a dose of Holy Shit thrown in.

A setlist that is so absurd as to think it was made up, but it isn't April 1st and TaperRob just plain wouldn't do that.

Wow. What a setlist. I'de say that I am a bit jealous when compared to the setlist we got in Cleveland. But the Blossom show was so well played that I just can't say that. Looks like a smoker on paper though. Hope it was as good as the Blossom show and you all enjoyed yourselves. :-)

Great show...these guys are getting better and better each night - it's almost like the setlist doesn't really matter - almost. I was in the 4th row (at face value) right in front of Phil. Man, it was the PHILZONE (although Phil is louder further back away from the stage sound). Phil has a Kerry bumper sticker on one of his little stage speakers. Bobby's got a sticker that says "Make Jimmy Shave."

I knew Help was gonna be the opener after Kerry said "Help Is On The Way" in his speech in Boston the night before. Bobby and Phil have worked out the duet on Franklin's and it smoked. Bobby can almost sing at the same time as Phil without looking at him the whole time. The US Blues to end the set seemed to confirm the political motivation of the opener. I know you really can't judge national politcal trends from a Dead concert - but "there's something happenin' here, what it is ain't exactly clear." Maybe W is really going down!?!

There wasn't a clunker all night. Fire rocked - yeah Warren could sing it better then Mickey, but Mickey wrote this song (I think) so let's give em a break - it works. Phil sounded great on Mountains - very moving with the full moon smiling down on the show. During US Blues, that full moon first showed it's smile between the roof and the trees in a little opening visible from the 4th row - there IS something happening here.

The China>Rider was short, fast, tight, and high energy. I think they were definately fighting the clock. I even think they scratched a song before China Cat based on the delay and facial exchanges. There was a real fast donor pitch right after Rider and a beautiful Ripple right after that with Phil singing without his bass - no bass on Ripple.

The songs i skipped were great - I just suck at writing reviews.

If you haven't gotten at least one ticket for this tour go get it!

Warm regards to all...

P.S. Give up your organs, but first, VOTE!

Longtime lurker with 60+ shows logged, at least 40 before Jerry died. Have to admit, last night makes very short list for my best shows. The band was on, the crowd was on, the moon was near-full (full moon tonight-- owwooooooooo! can't wait. maybe a floyd cover?), a nice breeze on the lawn, dancing was rampant, all was very fine. Anyone catch the short set on the small stage after Warren and before the Dead? Some band from Vermont called Raq. These guys really cooked. Extremely tight jam-fusion thing happening. Just in time to take over the reigns from Phish? Found more about them at Raqmusic.com.

!! 6-Up Warning!! cops /plainclothes were busting bud smokers in the lot so be reaaaal careful, like. Saw a poor lad get taken away after some plain clothes smelled his stinky nuggets cooking. Searched his car, cuffed and carted him off. Security was tighter in the lot than inside the show, where they seemed not to care at all about who smoked what, as long as you're on the lawn.

The Tweeter Center lot opens early, 1:30, with early arrival parking. See you there!

Decided to go, made the three hour ride, got to the lot @ 5:15 walked right up to the box ofice and scored an excellent seat. Warren was great, People, GO SEE Warren too, he don't disappoint. The boy's were on fire right out of the gate with Jimmy JUST SHREDDING the leads, he his not "holding back" anymore.Did anyone else see Phil PUMPING UP the rythym devils during Slipnot? He was REVVED UP. THe crowd responded in kind. The transitions were right on and the raga like little meltdown into (WHAT?) Truckin' was sweet, then after some nice jammed out false endings they melted down again into the beautiful Love supreme and Bobby strapped on the acoustic for more of the early seventies themed road songs of the evening (Franklin's is a homage to the roads traveled). It was nice and mellow to start rolling but the boys didn't let up and the song ended strong with Bobby rock star acoustic styly letting it go.Strange World, first time hearing it and I loved it, false ending, vocal jam, SEARING Jimmy licks and a nice Bobby Warren thing goin' on. Another tight sweet jam into the Wheel, boy are they sticking it to us tonight, Help on the Way, be not worried traveller, gotta mellow slow, settle down and keep on truckin', thru the Strange World, but ya' get a little furhter, just a little more, Warren and Bobby really working out out, Warren Emphatically pleading for us to try just a little bit more. The the Candyman was no doubt in town. A if we didn't quite get it, we got a Little Light. What a jam, Warren and Jimmy tearing it up, the rythym swinging and then it wa s them ole' US Blues to keep us dancing to the end of the first set. BOY HOWDIE ! What could be next? we speculated

So after a kinda' long break (C'mom guys) what are ya' doing eating dinner between sets? I know you are working your asses off for us but ya' could be beating the curfews by maikng these 30 - 35 instead of 45 minutes ! OKl, that being said we settled into our seats (not for long) to get the second couplet riddled set rolling. Lady, what can you say, with Warren singing most of this now, WOOHOO, what a Jam into terrapin and what a Terrapin ! The whole first 1/2 of the 2nd set was a huge singalong! Get an audience recording of this one to hear the crowd, WE WERE PUMPED. St. Stephen dropped out of the terrapin jam but also seemingly didn't. ( I need to hear this part again and I was VERY relativley sober due to the motherly Tweeter lady that I was sitting TOO close to most of the show)But that St stephen was just 'there' and we were groovin' on. THe William Tell Bridge> The Eleven what else do you say except again, Warren and Jimmy and Bobby and a bunch of Phil bombs ( DEEP DEEP BOMBS) and we were getting the goods! Scarlett>Fire and ya' know what? Mickey does just fine and after the goods we were dealt, who fucking cares who sang what (OK, Warren on TErrapin, that's different) but i digress. Drumz were kewl, Billy really cooked, Mickey was looking down at him while he smoked solo and it was great. Did anyone see Warren chencking out Mickey on the beam as the boys made there way back out? Looked like he was getting a kick out of the whole thing. Mountains, woah! While i'da liked to hear box, I heard that already but NEVER a MTNS so? Yeah, thanx Phil...China>Rider(?) WOW, seemed like they just jumped from China to the vocal bridge of Rider w/ out the usual requisit jam outs (Probably curfew I thought) Quick but heartfelt thanks to the crowd and a Donor rap and then Phil says, "Hey Bob, whatya' got there?" Bobby looks at his watch and says " We are running real late so UH.." and starts Ripple. Ahhhhhh, like a breath of fresh air. It was my daughters lullaby that we would sing to her and made me remember our road theme and Phil and Bobby telling us if they knew the way......but who does....I CAN'T WAIT FOR SPAC tomorrow....Thanks guys...

listened to some of the stream last night.

heard mr. bob kill a beautiful mountains of the moon...completely shutting down the band with his fucked up strumming. band completely stops to clean up the wreckage and then start back up with China>Cat.

It was disgusting.

I turned the stream off, right then and there.

the show is stellar even in the tiny mp3 stream. I cant wait for the shns of this. It may be a OCR purchase for me. I really can not believe the set list and so far each song is so well played and upbeat. Most people will snicker, but the US Blues i felt was really perfect. It can be a throwaway tune but not this one. Huge jam with insane intensity @ the will tell / eleven transition Jimmy Herring Jimmy Herring

Looked like to us that were there from all the conversations going on on the stage that the b oys cut a song in between MTNS and China....though a bit clunky if that's what turns you so off that you didn't listen to the rest of the show then shame on you....this is organic and random and you missed out on on sweet ending to an unbelivable (for those who were there and those who are knowledable enough listners) magical show

The whole band shifted towards the end on Mountains, I think because they were changing the setlist due to lack of time. Mountains of the Moon was great - much tighter than last year.

Ryan's wrong. Bobby was on last night, but he is a little high maintenance. Bobby was switching from acoustic to eletric near the end of Mountains. The whole band knew they had to cut it short.

This band is brigin' game, no doubt about it.
How're those stalwarts doing about not doin' any shows?

Hey, I don't think the cut on Mountains was Bob's fault. Remember, they cut the jam between China>Rider to. I have found out that tweeter center in Mansfield has 11:00pm curfew whic they slightly were over. The vibe on mountains was not that great either as most people seemed to just wait through it so Phil may have also wanted to end it. Anyways the show was still really awesome and thats all that really matters. For tonight I figure the setlist will be hard to beat but whatever they do play will be jammed like it was on this night. Thats my sense of what should go down tonight.....peace.

Elsha, that's a fine review of last night. Reminds me of back in the day when I'd read something like that, and say, ohhhhh mann, why could'nt I be there? But I'm glad for y'all and this sounds like a must hear.
Can't understand why anyone would be bummed to hear Mtns. These were Dead heads standing near you right, or perhaps this song was new to them?
Also, glad to hear your description of how they build up to the intricate jamming of something like Slipknot or the Eleven. I appreciate they're doing the Eleven, but not just for the sake of doing something, but aware that we're a disciminating crowd and we want the real deal. So, thanks to the Dead, hats off to you. Take care Elsha, enjoy your forthcoming shows.

>>Lordy, lordy, lordy and a dose of Holy Shit thrown in.

With the exception of PLQ in St. Louis, Red Rocks, The Warfield and RatDog in St. Louis and Lawrence, Kansas, this was the best post Jerry Dead I've seen.

The band was on, with a few minor ramblings between songs...not near the miscelaneous ramblings that PLQ is known for.

St. Stephen was as strong as the Warfield last year, but I'd give the edge to Rob Barraco on "William Tell Bridge"...something about the "climbing arms of ivy wraped around the mezzanine".

Skullpipes, Huck, Bud E. Green, Peggy-O, Althea, TaperRob, LessThan, GreaterThan, Fritz, JMoore, and a host of others too numerous to recall.

Final word on the show: I didn't return for Saturday because of family reasons, but I would not have anyway. Not because I didn't like it, but because being a DeadHead for so long, you KNOW when the show is good.

Friday was great.

No need to go back for more...they've done all they can do.

Don't have time to review much now, but thought I'd throw in a couple words. Friday night was a strong show, but I can't believe people thought it was *that* hot. Everyone I was around had a blast, but felt like they left plenty of room for improvement. The setlist - especially the opening of set 2 - was sick, but the playing didn't seem that great. Wheel was lacking in engery, and there was one point that they sounded like they were all playing something different. They pulled out ot it, but I still thought it was weak. Highlight by far was Terrapin and St. Stephen, which both just smoked. Terrapin may be the hottest I've seen, GD included. Post-space was pretty beat. Mountains is nice, but then they went into a 3 minute ChinaRider. No Jam. Yeah, they had a curfew, but they screwed up somehow and painted themselves into that corner in the first place. I with they would have closed with a song that's supposed to be short, instead of chopping off one that jams.

Speaking of Jams, I've been amazed at the almost total lack of jamming for both Great Woods shows. Tunes stop, the next one starts. Both verses of Dark Star last night must have totaled about 5 minutes. I liked it, because the long spacy 30 minute jams frequently bore me, but I would think hardcore Dark Star fans would hate it.

I'll go leave a few blurbs about last night in last night's thread, and hopefully give more song by song details of this one later. Oh, Just a little light absolutely smoked in the first set. We missed the HSF, which I bet was the highlight of that set, but Little Light cooked nearly as hard as PLQ plays it. I love to bash Bobby - not because he steals PLQ face time as someone above said, but because sometimes he's just so fucking bad - but I thought both of these nights he's been great. Bobby McGee was awesome. Candyman was a nice surprise. It just seemed so stupid to have him sing it when Warren's right beside him, but to my surprise, he did a decent job. I generally think of his singing style as "butchering" Jerry tunes, but Candyman was great. Scarlet's also decent. Fucking Mikey ruins Fire, and they shouldn't bother playing it.

Ok, I'm off to SPAC, where they're finally gonna' let it loose tonight!

Let me start by saying that the venue was 90 percent full not as full as second night and boy did those second night kids miss a monster!
The lot scene royally licked bcuzz the pigs really had a bug in thier asses for the venders.
Vending was raging until about 2 hours b4 the show at which point the storm troopers came in and shut it all down. I saw more venders getting busted than the guys running tanks, that is not cool...since when did a grilled cheese and a water hurt anyone?

The show on the other hand was flip out....
Help>Slip>Frank: From the opening note i knew it was gonna be a phil bomb night....Help on the Way sounded tight and sharp! I cant help thinking they played this as a salute to John Kerry who made help on the way his theme in his speech thursdayt night when they boys had a night off. Anyway this epic is just that, epic!
Franklins Tower was especially bouncy.
Truckin: Standard truckin with the line "livin on reds vitamin c and rogaine" included.
Me ad BM: not my fav but fun to hear.
Wheel: Here we go again, the show starts to smolder once more. After the H>S>F i was hoping that that wasnt the peak of the show, I was not dissapointed, the crowd was WAY into this Wheel, and the boys nailed it.
Candyman: Bob's style of singing is a little mismatched with this tune, that said it was done well, maybe warren would sound better singing this. Still I enjoyed every note of it.
Just A Lttle Light: Im in the middle on this one
US Blues: Nice, I really wanted to see this tune since its the tour name sake and they played it fast and hot. Jimmy pretty much nailed the jerry riffs here giving it an old school feel, i was rockin hard to this and was stoked to hear the lines "aint no luck, learned to duck!" as the lot had me duckin under VW's to toke.
Set break 51 minutes!
Lady>Terripan: NICE NICE NICE just when you thought they would save some stuff for tommorow, nope this was the show of the tour. HOly Moley this shows just won't quit. The Terripan was Tight, vocals sounded, honestly, jerryesque, no sh*t this was the freakin bomb......"Light the song with sense and color hold away despair"Get the Tape!!!!!!!!
St Stephen: Flawless! The intro, the solos, the vocals, the bridge drop out, the revamp, all of it was UNBELEIVABLE!!!! The crowd was going APe APE APE grape ape!!!EVERYONE knew the words it was deafening! Jimmy and Warren both smoked solo's, especially, WARREN was ripping mad Jerry licks all night. It was like bob and phil told him, hell told the whole band, to play like the Grateful Dead that night, no new versions, just smoke those old Jerry riffs and they did, it was so GRATE!!!!!!
Chilly winds/11: it was cool to hear it, made me feel like I was in the avalon ballroom in 69, honeslty this whole show made me feel totally dosed even though I gave that up in 93. Even though no show can be the same as the Jerry era, this one was def better than some of the 93-95 shows I saw, and even just as good as 89-90. I know alot of people will not believe me, LISTEN TO THE TAPE! the setlist even though impressive is actually overshadowed by the playing!
Scarlet>Fire: Scarlet was great, Bob sounded GOOD on vocals. Fire was so hot not even mickey's voice could kill, PHIL PHIL PHIL PHIL PHIL man you were so awesome on that FIRE!!!!! slappin fat riffs!!!!I love you man!!!!
Drumz:nice rockin drumz in the rhythym devil tradition
Space: JIMMY JIMMY JIMMY you are the man! Just channel jerry for me one more time man!!!!!!!
Mountains: Phil sounded good on vocals for this emotional tune, they had to play it (along with standing on the moon the next might) due to the blue moon over head.
China>Rider: Smokin China Rider, what can i say these boys are cookin some love I can DIG. Jerry or no this was a corker of a show, Once in a while you CAN get shown the light.......
Ripple: They played this quick ripple due to curfew violation which the Dead will be fined for. 2nd night they finished exactly @ 11, no fine that time.

Mansfield Mass pretty mauch SUX
The Dead however rocked this little town. First night was almost too good, it not only left me wondering what will be left for 2nd night, but also what will be left for the rest of the tour. After that show ATL is clearly the next big one to see.....im going to carolina too, lets hope some of these towns are a little more deer creek in the lot and a little more great woods in the show!

see ya soon kiddos,
2nd night review to come soon, I need a bowl of wheaties.

to all the people arguing about the gaffe on mountains of the moon....

just throw out that song and the rest of the show was awesome....I liked Mountains, but it was a little rough, try an avalon 69 version of that tune, probably even more rough, Jerry's voice clearly quivering w/ LSD, the parts just splashing around in the riffs loosley. Don't look for extreme tightness on old school speed/acid tunes these include; alligator, cosmic charlie, Rag, Cryptical, and even Mountains, i would say. As far as the band stopping and re-starting, have you ever been in a band? Did you want them to stop, say sorry, and then resume the hot show? Most musical mistakes are not noted by most fans, if the band stops and makes a big deal , more people are thrown out of thier good vibe. Trust me ive been in bands all my life, the show must go on.

One other comment: An MP3 stream is not the same as driving 19 hours from Kentucky to see the gratest rock band of all time, fighting the pigs for four hours trying to get irie and then having the boys deliver a few hours of bliss to you when you need it most. Dissing this show is like complaining about great sex the morning after, who cares I already came and went!

peace to all

INTO THE WOODS

Part One

I remember when the Dead ended at Bonnaroo, I thought there was a long stretch until my next show….and suddenly – it was upon me. The Day of the Woods – 7/30. My talk was full of “leaving early” and “beating the rush” – and at least I was talking that way bc Peggy-o and I left NYC close to 11. 30 mph on 95 till Bridgeport…..then….CT, RI, MA….phone calls flying left and right (“yo dawg I thought you were going to get here earrrrrrly…. HA). A fine ride (good road companion, P!!) where we basically recalled our greatest hits of the DNC – we’re ALL fired up. We swing down into the MoTELL Hotelll Hollllllllliday Innnnn, throw our stuff in and pack the show stuff up….and zoom to GW the back way (I’ll never tell…..)
We park at the Woods and head towards the obvious meet up spot….The Mule Van. The PA system is blasting “Madman” as I approach…..GT sees me acting it out with hand gestures and jumping from halfway across the parking lot. (“Madman Across the Parking Lot”) GT!!! LT!!!! The Cosmic Equation is IN THEIR ELEMENT….so good to see such fine feathered friends, and doing so well too. And suddenly it’s an onslaught of Zoners – Althea, Jmoore, Bud E, Jmoore’s pal Chad…all these FOLKS. Warren is ON – but there are a lot of people to say hello to and having driven all day I am in no desire to just RUN in.
But I do go in….
Security at Tweeter Center has gotten a mite hectic…..looking in the cig packs….and they were indeed the first venue to want me to open my stealth pocket on the lid of the bag. (“well, fine, but I’m going back to my car first”) uhhhhhhhh Just sayin.
I have these crazy row A sec 4 seats….handicapped accessible…great seats with a killer view. I get to my seat. Warren is singing Soulshine. Oh dear….it’s over. Love Ya Warren!!!

Lower Lot Concessions….zoners zoners everywhere….Scooterpie (fine indeed, loved sharing some of the show with ya too!), Big B, Jack Straw & C wandered over quick….really, it’s all a little fuzzy. Lots of….people. But Great Woods as usual is very nice, leafy green, wooden railings on the ramps to the lawn….open sides on the shed so the breeze comes through.

We hear commotion….we go to our seats.

HELP ON THE WAY.
I almost fall over. FUCK YEAH!!! And say what you NEED to say but WOW it was like they put John Kerry on the stage. The whole trio was magnificent (at the end of Slipknot I yelled “PRISTINE” bc it was….pristine).
Jam (and I already heard the Love Supreme here too) and then Scooter and I were both hearing Miracle….but oc it was Truckin….I run off for water and refreshments.
Both nights were very humid. The bathrooms were like saunas.
As I head back into the shed I found I’ve missed Bobby McGee, but that’s alright….the one at Roo will keep me satisfied.
Strange World I’m back for. Never heard it before…..I like it. Mickey writes the pop songs, eh?! It has good energy, it is played well. I will listen again next time.
Wheel….love the sentiment of it….this is good, solid one too….not a rushed filler-type Wheel.
Candyman – Bobby gives this a lot of soul & inflection. :-)
JALL – Oh, I know it will smoke and it delivers – BIG TIME!!
And then….US BLUES!!??!? No escaping the political context of this set now, are we?

And as we go to set break, I am ALL FIRED UP ABOUT IT. All fired up about it…telling people to vote and just so pleased that the band is taking a stand. WOO WOO
(An aside: ran into some old old friends, non Zoners….I think they were scared of us. “You, um, have a whole posse here, huh?” Nahhhhhh…. Heh heh heh.)
I ask GT if Strange World will be The Mick Song. She says that there may yet be more…

I return to the seats during LWAF – I hear Warren singing…huh. Nice. A Big Terrapin to start. Moons already, eh? Bob, Warren and Phil sing the Station part – with Phil pulling away on his own for a moment “to get to Terrrrrrrrapin” (love THAT)

STEPHEN
The crowd goes wild.
I love that what I am hearing is so much tighter than Roo – everything promised is INDEED delivered (to you) – Jimmy and Warren shading, together, not marginalizing each other. Everyone on stage is in a groove.
11 :-O
Scarlet nice but ohhhhhhhhhhhh does this mean
yeah ok I’m gonna go up to the lawn and smoke (unable to in my high visibility seat)
bc Mickey is butchering one of my faves. I’m sorry, I just really don’t think he is a vocalist; it is not his strength.

Bud E and I hit the lawn for a smoke…drums space and a perfect view of the Moon for the Mountains. It’s my favorite song that Phil sings, I think….I love his vocals on it. And Bud E, thanks, man, thanks for making the trip. That moment on the lawn was a keeper. A True Friend.

But I feeeeeel rocker….energy building….I want to be back in my seats for the end.

China Rider? So funny, not what I was expecting but I dance and jump. I’ve been warned about the 11 curfew so when it seems contracted, I understand. There was a lot of music to get in there pre-drums.

Encore? Ripple. Flawless. I weep -
You who choose to lead
Must follow
And if you fall
You fall alone
If you should stand –
Then who’s to guide you….
If I knew the way…..
I WOULD TAKE YOU HOME

On the way out of the venue….I walk out with Just Another Deadhead (so great to see you!!!!! Sorry you were not with us Sat but hey – it’s all about….BALANCE) who introduces me to Skullpipes – what a top notch person he is!!! Nicetameeeetcha.

Great Woods lot scene closes it up …meet up with Taper Rob….JA, TR, Peggy & I search for Fritz’s roll before splittin….hoping to also see Bosphan and Crypt….and we find Fritz, Carla & Crew – but no Boston Boys….ah well….
Soon we are off to catch zzzzzzs in prep for PART 2
To be Continued….

Huck..>>..An aside: ran into some old old friends, non Zoners….I think they were scared of us. “You, um, have a whole posse here, huh?” Nahhhhhh…. Heh heh heh..<<

Yep..albeit limited in my number of Zoner gatherings..when on the wing with a gaggle of Zoners..that look of fear..they like take the proverbial step back..pause before proceeding..like a self preservatory instinct..is funny..cause we know that we are harmless..

My 1st show in a BIG place being 1st row - not all it's cracked up to be - I'm tall and you have to stand on the 2-1/2" high riser which supports the rail, so to the people behind me I'm about 6'-8", great - so I'm just self-conscious all night - next time I'm actually trading for something further back - one interesting thing is you really hear the stage sound - each player is very distinct to their location - pretty balanced too, suprisingly. On to the show:

1st set: A SLEEPER!!!! When "Me & Bobbie Mc Gee" is the highlight of a 1st set, SOMETHING'S WRONG!!!! The H-S-F was like one of those top-40 versions where they cut out the best parts of the song to fit it into a 3 min slot - Slipknot virtually nonexistent - yeah, they hit all the right notes and played it "correctly" but ZZZZZZZZZ . . . Truckin' pretty much the same - very brief hints of "A Love Supreme". This was a classic "1st set of 1st big east coast tour" set - all bland, nothing special, after playing all the "special" 1st set stuff in the last 2 shows (Sittin On Top, Greatest, etc). I thought "Strange Days" was Hard 2 Handle at first but not to be. In the lot after the show someone had the Red Rox show playing and someone said: "oh, that's what this song is REALLY supposed to sound like" - yup, exactly! Bathroom break for Lil Lite - the guy behind me scolds me for leaving - they bust into Useless - I say "Well if I'd known this was next I'da held out!" 2nd set starts off very promisingly with Terrapin - it's a big version - there's some actual improvisational meanders (which were NONEXISTENT in the 1st set) - then a GREAT jam/space into St Stephen - this flows well into William Tell and The 11 - but it still feels merely "adequate' - not really over the top - Scarlet next - I'm hoping this goes into drums 'cause I'm all too aware of the 11 pm curfew issue in this place - if yer up front the clocks on stage are in your face - we get the Mickey-sung Fire tacked on instead - arrgh! Now there's only 30 min's left for d/s/post-drums - and they do what I had feared the most - RUSHED THROUGH EVERYTHING!!! - this setlist looks AWESOME but I can tell you it was one of the most DISAPPOINTING post-drums I've ever seen the post-Jerry reunion do - I'd been waiting a LONG TIME for a Mtn's of the Moon and this was just so devastatingly dissapointing 'cause Phil and Bob kept looking at the clocks and hurrying it along - the China-Rider and Ripple made all the more frustrating 'cause they were great tunes but not butchered like this - sorry, this was just way too painful for me, who likes everything explored to it's most thorough depth. More disappointing 'cause that's the only Mtns of the Moon I'll get in 13 shows, too. Well, several folks in the previous shows posts had said that you can't judge a show by it's setlist - in their case affirming that a lousy setlist was well played - well, in this case it's the opposite - a great setlist pretty much butchered post-drums - I'd say it's not thier fault but they KNEW about the curfew - maybe a 70' break is a little EXCESSIVE, guys, I dunno?

sideshow bob:
you went to a different show than me, to each thier own.

7-30-04 best of the tour so far IMHO

p.s. did agree on your comment about terrapin/stephen containing the best improv of the nite.

Bob, I'm so relieved to finally see that someone else saw the same show me and my friends did on Friday night. Very fun, outstanding setlist, no jamming, decent playing but nothing special, rushed. Of the 3 I saw (2 Great Woods and SPAC), this was the best of the 3, but just barely, and none of them were anywhere near being over the top. And I still can't understand why more people aren't commenting on the fact that there is virtually no real jamming going on. They *play* really hard, and are rippin' up many of the tunes, but the transitions are non-existant for the most part. I had a blast and will go next year or next time for sure, but I just can't believe 7/30 is considered one of the best of the tour...

You have plenty of shitty review boiler-plate by now Bucky. Just think, you can stand on your chair with both thumbs down and boo from the very first note.

well it was better than richfield 93, it was better than deer creek 95, it was better than louisville 89, it was better than shoreline 94,

does anyone notice jerry was still alive during these throw away shows? Im talkin 6-7 song first set's and encores like I fought the Law, most of the show would consist of Corrina, Liberty, Eternity, Easy Answers, Wave to the Wind, Samba in the Rain, Picasso Moon, and other "classics".

News Flash: I saw over 180 show's with Jerry including JGB 10 times or so, I'd rather hear the Dead "butcher"(your words not mine) songs like China>Rider, Terrapin, etc than to hear a half dead Jerry sleep through the show only to wake up for Stella Blue and then slump back down and limp off stage after around 1 hour of total music.

Maybe there are no jams or whatever but had a great time at great woods and Im not changing my review for anyone. The show ROCKED, end of story. To all those that think it was average or sucked, im sorry you had a mediocre time, I had a blast!

"Thats the way its been in town ever since they tore the jukebox down"

Bucky, nice to see you, glad you're here to spread the love, sir.

Have.....fun tonight.

re: the help slip frank being unjammed. YES
doesn't bother me in the slightest. The Slipknot was precise; the help & frank were sung with feeling. To me it was a True Statement., sharp and BANG.

re: the "flawless" Ripple
well, sure....if you saw Joan & Bob struggle through it at Camden....and, I heard, trainwreck it @ SPAC in 03.

re: the rushed Mts....
well, so glad I was sitting on the lawn groovin on the moon and not watching all the body language on the stage.

onward, amigos...

Upon further review (hearing the CDs)...
This was a pretty incredible show. The playing is as tight as I've heard from any version of this band. Warren at the end of "The Wheel" is incredible. The Terrapin has to rank among the best. Even the rushed Rider sounds good. Heck of a show.

As far as the general disagreement about this show - I actually agree with both of you camps out there. This band does not wander like the GD did, simply because there is no one alive who can replace Garcia when it comes to wandering. Often imitated, never duplicated. Sooooooo, if you're looking for lengthy and wierd transitions between songs, this might not be the band for you.

What they do extremely well, however, is rock. This band absolutely smokes the rockin' songs. On the 7-30-04 at Great Woods, they powered through some rockin' jams all night. Keep in mind that this outfit undoubtedly rehearses much more then the GD ever did, and it shows in their tightness.

If you like the Dead at all, this was a great show, the short cuts after space nothwithstanding. If you're thinking you'll hear another Garcia slipping and sliding between a spacey playin' and an ethereal Crazy Fingers, you're in the wrong place.

Of the 75 or so shows (including 55 or so with the Fat Man), this is one of my favorites. IT ROCKED!!!!!!!

Clearly, no one is posting here anymore, but I have to say that I freakin' love listening to this show! VERY solid, with a few minor exceptions. Sounds better than what I heard from my perch in Sec. 4, for sure.
