If anyone plans on driving through the city of Batavia on Friday, be cautioned! There is major construction on Main street (route 5). It might be best to try and bypass that area if at all possible.

What are the chances that they'll play Cassidy?
Let's hope so....

Have Phun!

hey all, I went to this show last year. Can't make this years but I'll tell you now.. If your out in the field, the band is so far away you can hardly see them. Also they let like a million people into the field so you can barely move. Everyone has there favorite places to watch a show depending on if your a dancer or an observer of the band. My advice though is to get under the tent for this one. The field was a disaster zone last year. Though if I remember correcly we did get a Help>Slip>frnklins encore after a short second set.....peace.

corrina would be cool, i always felt that song was ahead of its time.

at least bob can't mess up the words to that tune ;)

victim would be a treat as well, i think it really would benefit from the sonic wall produced from three guitars!

hell, even mexicali would sound sweet.

I'm amazed that anyone could even fathem that any of these shows sucked??? Wow - Jerry's now looking on us from above, He's Gone... It's different now...Things differed for the boys from the 60's to the 70's to my years in the 80's and 90's... go listen to the tapes... ever changing, ever evolving... and continuing to...ain't we lucky to be part of it all. These guys are great, yes, even Bobby... although some of his antics I don't necessarily like... I still respect him as an artist.

Just remember that this is still a happening, and all of us that choose to attend have been given a spectacular gift... a gift that I will cheerish forever.... Sucked??, I think not, maybe he who thinks it was bad wasn't listening fully. A suggestion to ye critics, open your mind along with your ears and you may walk away with more than you once had. These guys are and always have been in all their various transformations...The Real Deal!

>>maybe he who thinks it was bad wasn't listening fully. A suggestion to ye critics, open your mind along with your ears <<

How can you possibly be listening with an open mind if you think everything they play is good? We all know and believe that the GD were inredible, amazing, stupendous back in their heydey late 60's - mid 70's era. And back then, when things were so great, they still played songs, jams, and shows that sucked. Just because they've been doing it for 40 years now doesn't mean that suddenly every note is pristine does it? As gets pointed out 1,000 times a day here, this is a thread used for reviewing shows. If everyone jumps on and says "best show ever" every night, and "Mikey sounds great when he "sings" Fire", what's the point of a review?

I think some people forget that those of us who listen with a highly critical ear still love everything about going to shows, warts and all, but we don't feel compelled to praise them when they're not at the top of their game. Some of my fondest GD memories and stories come from some of their most horrific shows. I think I've told the story of how bad they were on 7/2/87 foxboro more than how great they were in Pittsburgh in '89, because it's almost comical how bad they were. But I had a total blast at Foxboro. And they sucked. And that's ok.

read the thread dude, I never said everything they play is good...only that this is a happening, ever evolving and a true gift.... I've been disapointed many times but tried to come away with something. Off nights for sure, sucked?? I think not.

by the way... what kind of review is "last nights show sucked"??? were there no highlights?? what "sucked" about it?? C'mon, give em a break, Phil's 64 and still giving us his all, off nights and Killer nights. I thought reviews consisted of more than "last nights show sucked."

Can't post an entire review right now, gotta jet, more later.

Last nights show looks great on paper but was very very discombobulated. The band didn't gel all that well imho. Keep in mind I thought Cleveland was amazing. The Dark Star jam after Jack Straw was a complete mess. They had no idea what they were doing. Still had a blast though! Will post more later.

I really can't understand anyone making a statement that "They or anyone sucked". Based upon...? Good for you...stay at home then. You're probably one of the jerkoffs yelling "Truckin" at the top of your lungs...

man...what is wrong with people these days? The Grateful Dead retired 9 long years ago and the music has been reborn via the "Dead". Gone are the days of 1st set or 2nd set only, or transitioning into the same old...aka Scarlet/Fire. Leave it all alone and be happy with what we have. I can certainly think of a lot worse things in life than Warren singing Desperado or Mickey rappin Fire.

Just my 2 cents worth....

I came out of The Electric Factory (Ratdog) in March feeling the same way as Tank. Bobby did the same thing 2nd set with throwing his hands up in frustration, took his guitar off and walked off the stage. Guitarist and bass player switched instruments in a last ditch effort to get out of what I thought was a musical trainwreck. Like a baseball "shuffle the lineup" type of thing. Got a copy of the show later that week too just for another perspective. Listened to it several times. I STILL think the show sucked. Worst Dead related performance I've ever seen. It happens. With that said, I'll be heading over to bt.etree.org to see for myself. See you in Camden!

I usually lurk, but.......

Why are you people so quick to jump ugly on any negative comment about the band's playing?
It's just a person's HONEST opinion for God's sake.
I've seen & heard a bit this year & IMHO, it's up & down, good & bad.
So, why must some of you slam ANYTHING other than a totally postive, "everything was great" review?
That's just not what this band is, & quite frankly, even PLQ wasn't perfect, nor was the Grateful Dead. And, I'm sure EVERY member of those bands would be the first to admit it.

I wonder what is really the motivating factor in making those of you slam the negative reviewers.......

Is it a deep seeded fear that maybe 'The Dead' just really aren't that good & you're chasing a memory & the negative reviewers strike too close to the bullseye?

Just my $.02

I'm not slamming negative reviewers my no means, everyone's entitled to their opinion. It's just that the EXTREME statements that people have been making all summer:

>This sucks, they suck, Jimmy sucks, Phil's flat, song selection sucks, played this in the first set when its always been a second set tune>

It all gets really old. Seems like the glass has been half empty instead of being half full all summer.Comparing this summer's music with the past 2 decade's is not what we should be doing. It's not the same band and the jams and music styles never will be the same that we all became accustomed to hearing over the last 40 years.

The point I was trying to make was a very simple one - enjoy it while we can because it's not gonna last forever....

did anyone see the small gate crashing? saw it coming a mile a way, it was with people with tickets too. The dead had started and they were being rediculous how they were searching everyone. then people started all pushing and fences broke, people fell, it sucked, then they closed the gate where they check your ticket to stop the rush, which could of been really bad.

the Ripple was absolutely amazing. the Blackbird was a very tasty way to start a set. the Truckin' had that great round up to the one big-bass-boom. i definitely have seen a Dark Star now! oh, and bobby didn't add that extra bar for 'laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaady in velvet.' someone must have kicked his ass for that from bonnaroo. the Watchtower was kick ass - warren made it into the Hendrix version from the gitgo. Drums was sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. good job guys. Sugaree rocked, thank you warren. jimmy played some sweet stuff. the Jack Straw almost sounded like europe '72 - it was tight. LOOSE LUCY! rocked. She Said! rocked. Little Light! rocked.
The jams did seem a little discombobulated at times but so what - tying together a rough transition smoothly is what it's all about.
Did I mention the Ripple? good job Bob, thank you.

Too much Dark Star?

Possibly. On the way up to the show, we passed a silver Mercedes with a "DRK STR" license plate. Maybe a sign of things to come.

So Jack Straw was really good and rockin, everyone dancing around. Then they moved into the Dark Star jam. They were confused immediately into starting the jam (before the opening Dark Star notes). At one point Bobby calls for a new guitar then right when the tech is a foot away from him, he waves him back. Phil is trying to get everyone back on track and talking into the mic, Jimmy is talking into Warren's ear trying to figure out what was going on. It made me feel nervous watching them trying to figure out what they were doing. So then they hit the opening notes of Dark Star and I'm thinking geez Jack Straw>Dark Star to open up a show again?

But instead of singing Dark Star, they did the full Dark Star jam (the guitars mimicking the verses). It really sounded like the Jazz Is Dead "Dark Star."

So then the second set rolls around and they play Dark Star. It just didn't fit imho. They had just gone through the entire song in the first set instrumentally, and then play it again in the second. I just didn't feel the flow.

Fire On The Mountain was another one I felt they just couldn't get together. I might be wrong here, but I think Mickey grouped the first and second verses together before getting in a chorus which threw things off.

Highlights for me would be Loose Lucy, Hey Pocky Way in the first set. Second set...Blackbird with just Bobby and Warren. There is actually a ">" between Blackbird and Truckin. A really nice little jam if I remember correctly. Truckin was pretty good too. Watchtower was very good with some great solos. Sugaree was really good but I just saw it a week ago in Cleveland so I really wasn't all that excited. Very well played though. The Ripple encore was excellent as well.

Had a blast at the show but I just felt a little disappointed that it didn't get me off like the Cleveland show did.

Fuck! I totally forgot about my favorite part of second set. SPACE! Drums was pretty good but then Billy left and Mickey tinkered around on the beam for a while and Jimmy made his way out to the stage. Space was just Mickey and Jimmy for a couple minutes pulling off some really cool stuff. Then the band came back out and wound into Sugaree. That part was really good.

Flopiejane, thanks for reminding me about the bomb in Truckin. That was awesome and I totally forgot about it.

I hope my review didn't come off too bad. The show was still great and there were several really great transitions into songs.

>>Is it a deep seeded fear that maybe 'The Dead' just really aren't that good & you're chasing a memory & the negative reviewers strike too close to the bullseye?

NO FEAR HERE........

You have got to be kidding, right?? Not that good???, have I been missing something for the past 27 years.... I got the same goosebumps at SPAC and Hartford that I used to get in the late 70's and early 80's when I was new to the scene. Their still playing, the current song selections are really pretty awesome, the jams are short but very tight, the transitions are usually right on, Warren and Jimmy are incredible, Phil can still drop those bombs and steps up to the mic, Micky and Billy still keep killer rythem, Bobby strums along and sings like he means it and when I'm lucky enough to go see these guys I still get an intense case of the happy feet with goosebumps and maybe a stray tear or two. HMMM...not that good??...things that make me go hmmm

Be negative if you'd like to... suggest the boys suck or aren't that good, your entitled to your opinion... I just see them as talented musicians who have given us all a lot to be grateful for.

?????????????????????????????????????????????????

Tank, I repsect your opinions and agree with some things you say in regards to how 'this' band performs at times. And Portland, IMHO sucked! The setlist and performance were way below the level of musicianship these guys have the potential to play at. ! I mean come on please!..when Bobby's only original/traditional GD song is Corrina the entire SHOW? Well to say the least, to this fan, that is already beyond disappointing. The Gorge however, was a pretty darn solid show and I had lots of fun.

That being said; your opinions (TANK) would be even MORE respected IMO, if you took the time to WRITE more GRAMMATICALLY correct sentences that we can all read and comprehend.
Peace and Light ALL

I loved Friday night's show at Darien Lakes. The only other one I caught was SPAC so it's hard for me not to compare the shows. I didn't think Friday's setlist was as well thought out as the one at SPAC but it had more high energy dancing tunes so I think I got a good balance.

First set highlight for me was Just a Little Light. I've been wanting to catch this one ever since I heard my first PLQ version on CD. Warren smokes this tune. I also liked the first set Help on the Way placement and was glad they left it open ended for the second.

Second set highlight was a scorching Truckin'. It filled up around me fast and the whole front section was a sea of bodies. Loved it! Other strong numbers were Sugaree and Franklin's Tower. I was all about getting down that night.

The various Dark Stars were a nice theme to both sets but I don't think any of those segments really took off on their own. A nice interlude, just didn't feel like a Dark Star night.

I was skeptical about Warren joining the band. Just thought it would be too PLQ heavy but that's not the case. Warren makes the band tighter and is really great at filling a hole and rounding out the sound, whether it's vocally or with his guitar. This band is hitting on all cylinders right now and it's really gonna be tough to see the tour continue without the promise of "one more show". I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment that we need to open our eyes and see this band for what it is right now. They are just plain awesome.

Great song selection + well played = great show. So what if some of the transitions went a little awry - it's all part of exploration.

As much as I enjoyed last year's Darien show (yes with Joan!) I thought that this year's show was better played and the jams had more cohesiveness. Phil had a great night particularly during the Darkstars which were awesome and I agree with Reverand - you can never get too much Darkstar. I echo some of the other opinions expressed that Warren has found a way to fit in and add without overwhelming. Jeff Chimenti was really solid and delivered some great solos. My only minor complaint is why can't Bobby figure out how to change guitars a little slicker - when he's playing and singing so well it's distracting.

Many other 1st set highlights - a rocking JackStraw opener, Loose Lucy and Hey Pocky Way - the crowd was really into it.

The entire second set was strong IMHO - bookended with a sweet Blackbird and a soulful Sugaree. The Ripple encore was sweet - accoustic, no bass and a great Phil vocal.

I hope that the boys will add Toronto to the tour next year - if Phil&Friends, Ratdog and everyone else can make it up here, why not the Dead! It will give us Canuck Heads a chance to catch a few more shows.

Oh yeah, I don't think anyone mentioned the sign language interpreter. She was stage left all night, starting with Warren's acoustic set. It was really cool to watch her sign the words and dance to the music. My girlfriend was really interested in how she managed to sign "Sugaree". :-)

Has the interpreter been at any other shows?!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By damon (Verve13) on Sunday, August 08, 2004 - 01:02 pm: Edit Post

I think the interpreter is at all the shows, ollie. There is an article about her in the new Relix (Bob Marley on the cover). I believe there were two different interpreters at the Darien show. At least it looked like they switched during the first set.

I can't believe Tank complained about the band being high. By the looks of his review (no sentence structure whatsoever) he must have been piss drunk when he wrote it. Im sure bobby wasn't tripping too, he gave that up a while ago. I don't think he hit his head to say "I'm really fucked up" but to say "I am frustrated."
Ps. If you were sober when you wrote your review, Tank, I would consider hooked-on-phonics.

So, who has listened to the show now and still think it sucked? i think that radioboy's recording is beautiful - and that the show was as wonderful as i thought. I'm listening to 'All That We Are' right now and it's a great song, well played. i had never heard this song before this night - what a killer song. I also thought that all the kids (children) on the lawn havin' a good time was a great sight to see. and it was a gorgeous night. What a beautiful sunset. Warren's part was killer too - he played a beautiful 'End of the Line'. All in all - a killer evening. Now if only the guards at the Darien gate would mellow out - they were like hawks. I have never been so felt up. I couldn't even take an empty water container in. this monopoly at the concesion stands is ridiculous. what horrible prices. That line in 'Truckin' became even more poignant for me as they sang, "New York, got the ways and means, but just won't let you be, oh oh."
Never thought i'd ever get to see a 'Ripple' - wow!

It was my son's first show and he had a blast! We were down close on the lawn on the right hand side right in front of the video screen and beer sales. Fingers on fretboard hung out with us all day and he is totally cool man, totally. I had a blast and would do any/many shows with this brother again!!!! My son was grooving I must say. He was dancing and waving his arms and hands around all over the place and it seemed like many people were really getting a kick out of him. The honesty of how the kids dance just can't be denied, there is no inhibiton and thats what makes it great!!! I could tell many of us "adults" thought damn I wish I had the guts to dance like that without caring what anyone thinks.

My observations:

This night they were taking their time and jamming things out MUCH MORE SO than at any of the previous 5 shows I'd seen. There were several repeats from Mansfield but boy oh boy WHAT A FREAKIN' DIFFERENCE!!! This show vs. Mansfield makes it clear as day to anyone who even has the remotest clue that GOOD LONG JAMMING MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD when it comes to the intensity of the songs that follow! A prime example being the Dark Star and Slipknot - Mansfield's were way short and thus what followed had NO energy either - Darien's were jammed out thus the songs that followed fed off the jamming energy and were played with FIERY intensity.

The middle of the 1st set had a few songs in a row I REALLY didn't want to hear (ESPECIALLY not Just A Little Light for the 2nd time!) but the 2nd set and jammy intensity more than made up for it. Truckin' - 8 Miles High VERY intense. Even Blackbird was jammed out - just Warren and Bobby! I was initially pissed when they busted into Sugaree, having been to Red Rocks for that Friday post-drums debacle, but could tell this Sugaree was no throw-away version (and indeed they did the Dark Star reprise instead of Throwing Stones which I was dreading). NICE transition into Franklin's too!

Definitely my favorite show of the tour up to this point. Also VERY long show - well over 3 hours!

I'll also say the scene this year was VERY mellow compared to last year - hardly saw any extreme X-ed out ravers whilst last year it felt like the whole crowd was raving. Also security did a great job of keeping the lawn riffraff out of the front sections (which they failed miserably at last year) - they used bracelets and stubs for access. Sorry but my take is if you have a lawn ticket STAY THE FUCK OUT ON THE LAWN AND DON'T COME DOWN AND TRY TO SCAM MY SPACE!!!!

Seen better, seen worse. I thought the first set started and ended strong, but was a little slow in the middle. The second set jams were long and hot. I can't belive no one has said anything about the 8 Miles High, it was sick! Had to be the highlight of the show for me.

The Eight Mile High bust out in Red Rocks was huge plus the element of total surprise....whoooeee.
I can well imagined that it ripped in Darien, especially as this band must be a lot tighter.

The Grateful Dead are my favorite band of all-time.

The grateful dead were such a great band and for so many years, it's dissappointing to me to hear them now on this current tour. I was so excited about the tour after hearing the news that all remaining members would tour together. warren and jimmy just don't do it for me; their affect on the Dead is too overpowering. I could hardly hear Bob's guitar this summer. To me, the guitar play of jerry and bob was the greatest thing about the grateful dead's sound. they just meshed together so damn well, it was pure genious. to go from that to what we have today- with jerry gone and bob's guitar overpowered completely, i just don't get anything out of it.
phil, bill & mickey are great! the current guitar-heavy lineup is ruining their songs for me

i miss good old jerry and bob's band.

Its obvious that anyone who thought the Darien show sucked is either a FAKE, and idiot, or a girly-man who sleeps with his mother because he is too lazy to find a job in order to pay for a full priced ticket. Darien was a solid show!! A++ for a bunch of 60 year old men. I've been seeing shows since 1980 and was totally entertained by the Darien. I hit SPAC and Scranton too. And I will be at Jones Beach. I can't believe the crap posted here on this site.

This is my last posting to this website. Its obvious that it been over-run by people who have never seen Jerry play and don't appreciate the music that was made over the last 40 years. Or by Jerry-lovers who haven't come to the reality that he's been dead for 9 f*ckin' years and he ain't comin' f*ckin' back! And how about the WANNABES walking around the parking lot with their index finger up in Scranton. When the show wasn't even sold out!!!! When Jerry was alive, the index finger meant the show was sold out. Now you have these dreadlocked FAKERS driving to shows in their daddy's BMWs looking to score a $10 ticket. Or as cheap as they are, a free one. PLEASE.

Sorry Phil. Nice site. But its attracted people who aren't into your music, but who are posing for the scene. I hate posers. They suck!!!! Like I said last year on this site, please don't come to the show if you are not appreciating the music!!! It just means more tickets for the real fans. Phil, "May the four winds blow you safely home......." PEACE!!!

i thought it was a great show, high energy all the way. a show is always subjective to each indivdual....i think more then just the song selection or how the songs where played, contribute to the whole experience...

dont forget - 'there is nothing like a dead show'
