I'll be brief, it's late and I'm tired and I need to get up and go to work tomorrow. Anyhow, in general the first set was pretty tight, not a lot of jamming but well played. Sitting on Top of the World was a nice opener, Bertha rocked, everyone sounded great and Phil kept the beat hummin' throughout. New Speedway boogie was also well done. Didn't know the next song, as I recall it was a Warren song, OK but nothing special. Stagger Lee was well played with some decent jamming but Bobby flubbed the words big time. At one point he wandered over to Warrens teleprompter to find out where he was supposed to be. Baba Jingo so-so. They ended strong with Brown eyed-Women and Mason's Children easily the best song of the first set.

Second set was much more energic throughout. Friend of the Devil with Bobby on acoustic. Feel like a Stranger was a surprise coming out of Friend of a Devil and things really got going. Bobby sounded real good and had some good interplay with Warren. I've never been a big fan of Eyes but this was done pretty well, Jimmy was ripping. Phil rumbled into Cold Rain and kept thumping (Phil did vocals on this). Hard to Handle was off the hook, damn near funky, some great work by Warren. Samson was OK then a real slow melodic Stella Blue by Warren. NIght of a 1000 stars had a lot of energy. I've only heard it a few time so not that familiar with it. Bobby's daughter was on stage of some point, I think it was Stella Blue. Warren is well suited for this. Gimme Some Lovin' and Not Fade away pretty standard but the place was rockin. Warren was absolutely smoking on After Midnight which was played just before midnight. They time it just so, so they could do Brokedown after midnight, making it of course August 9th. Well done.

Oveall a real nice show, especially the second set. And although I barley mentioned him, Jimmy sounded great tonight and was having a great time smiling and laughing over there all by himself.

>>>Jimmy sounded great tonight and was having a great time smiling and laughing over there all by himself.

I fuckin agree. Last night Warren clearly had the spotlight, which happens alittle more than i like with such a talanted lineup. However, i have never seen Jimmy show as much emotion as he did tonight. From the very beginning Jimmy took control of the guitar leads and kept it most of the night except for a few sperts where Warren killed it. It looked to me like everyone on stage tonight was having a great fucking time and that really excites me being that this was last Dead show of the summer. The boys killed it tonight.

Agreed Tim always good to hanfg with you and Scarlet....

1st set- a bit slow and just not doing it for me
altho there were a few gems Bertha and Mason's...

2nd set was beautiful and I was groovin
The Stella was the best I have heard this
year and last. Warren really put his soul into
it! Gave me goosebumps!
To tired for much more review but the friggin BORKEDOWN was, to me, sweet, totally perfect timing for the clock moving to 8/9....

I had a BLAST! SO much goodness in those I know here. Ran in to so many people, got to hang with many of you for the past ew days and was happy to share these shows with you.

Oh and Bobby was having some serious issues....HAHAHAH!

They traded vocals. Phil had the "packs a 45" verse. Bobby did fuck up the second to last verse...totally blew the "bayou bayou will see you hangin high..shot my billy dead....." part...he started to go into the " look out stagger lee ending". They then had to regroup for the final part. Maybe they will get it right next go around.

they also screwed up the end at Mansfield.

but Phil did nail the

"Packs a forty-fiiiiiiiiiivvvvvvvveeeee!!!!" :-)

Phil's vocals on Stagger Lee at MANSFIELD were actually one of the shows highlights for me.

Who sang Brokedown? Please don't say Phil or Bobby...

How was Gimme' Some Lovin'? This is one I've been hoping PLQ would bust out for years. Easily one of my favorite tunes whenever Brent played it back in the day, and I'd think if Warren took the vocals it would smoke.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By scarlet (Fire) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 11:17 am: Edit Post

well, i am completely exhausted.. but here's my review..

first set was kinda slow.. sittin' on top of the world, bertha, and mason's were good ~ the rest was lacking (to me at least). bobby fucked up stagger lee big time and warren shoulda sang brown eyed women. no real jammin', just song after song. band seemed tired and not totally into what they were playing.

2nd set ~ much better... i was rockin' out! :-) some of those songs would have really picked up the first set had they been done then. stranger would have been good in the first set and then in the 2nd set when they did eyes, an estimated before the eyes woulda been real nice. i was really glad to hear warren do stella instead of bobby. this was where i was starting to really fade (not from boredom just really tired) night of a 1000 stars was a little weird after hearing stella but was good. gimme some lovin' was enjoyable too. after midnight was rockin' (good call, splintered!) and brokedown was nice to hear especially since it was a bit after midnight making it 8/9 though i really wish warren woulda sang. i'm not much for bobby with the slower songs & jerry tunes ~ too "Love Boat" lounge singing for me. show ended and we went back to the car to meet up with some zoners before we split. nitrous mafia set up shop next to us and we decided to split. i almost got nailed with a tank some dude was trying to carry ~ thank you, kindmomma for yelling at him!!!

back to the real world.. have a grate monday, pholks!!

Loved the setlists, loved the show. Bobby fucked up the words to one verse, not the whole song, and who gives a shit. How many different tunes are they floating in rotation?

Masons is one tune I could do without for the rest of this incarnation, but...

Music to BabaJingo was great. Make it an instrumental.

Drummers just make the Molo whole that much deeper and more painful.

Nothing wrong with Jeff, but, if you want to miss Rob a helluva lot, play the Bertha. Another big ass hole in the heart of this music.

Clean orchestrations, and if you are looking for the endless jam, it appears it has gone by the wayside, and with this line up and the diversity of the musicians, that is the right call, in my mind. Given that, the groove does stop and start, but what comes out serves a wonderful purpose.

You Remind Me is a beaut. The rest of the show was just a nice ride, and that is all this band has to be. Fresh, clean fun.

If you have the opportunity to hit one of the last shows, I highly recommend it. No pretension, no excess; a great summer night.

Oh, and the weather in Philadelphia/Camden this past weekend was stellar...adding to a beautiful sunset. 70 degrees both evenings with a cool breeze, and its fucking August.

Ain't it wonderful when two different people can have completely differing views on what went down ! Everything is so subjective, and the last two posts just point that out in the clearest way ! I have always felt that way about shows, everyone has their own take on things.

Good show, good setlist, nice crowd and good taste ending with brokedown palace on august 9th.
I think 'You Remind Me'could be a hit song if they released it(although after touch of grey I hope it doesn't.After 25 years of touring I miss those who have passed on,I love Phil,Bobby,Mickey and Bill like they are family and whoever they chose to play on stage with them is fine with me as long as they keep on keepin'on!Jerry said that he hoped that his music would carry on after he was gone and I think they are doing a great job keeping the musical conversation going.last night I came to make it just one more day,and loved every minute of it.Those of you who complain when somebody blows a line out of a setlist that large are gonna miss all this fun when it finally ends.
I look at this post Jerry era as a huge bonus,
and can't wait 'til tuesday.peace

OK; I am briefly gonna come out of lurk mode to throwin my 2 cents. Brief bio, I'm 38 saw my 1st show on 4-16-83, and have seen about 75+/- GD shows. Post Jerry I have seen 20 shows of the various incarnations, 15 of the PLQ variety. I saw the last 2 in Camden, and I am going to Holmdel Tues and Wed maybe. Last night the 1st set was awful with the exception of sototw they blew Stagger-Lee and BE wimmin'. The 2nd set was nice Eyes and Cold Rain being the highlight for me, and I left when they started playing 1000 Stars, I have seen enough of that song already and I don't need to see it any more. Only thing I missed was not seeing After Midnight, sounded good from the RR show. I think the that PLQ blows the Dead out of the water, in my eyes its not even close. The 3 guitar thing does not cut it, the sound is completely muddy and I at times I can't distinguish one sound from the next. It all becomes one huge blob. When Jerry was around you could count on his lone guitar sound to rescue you your ass when you got to edge of no return. Like a beacon his signature guitar sound could pull you back to reality. And his sound was crystal clear, no denying it. Seems to me they need to stick to a 2 guitar line up, either Warren and no Jimmy or Jimmy and no Warren, with a singer to fill the vocal void. And that brings me Bobby's vocals, his voice is spent!! Gone; his pipes are toast. He doesn't even sing, he talks the lyrics. But all praises' cause, he fried his voice singing and yelling to us for 40 years. Seems apparent that someone should be singing the all the Jerry tunes and Bobby should be singing only his. Mind you this is just one mans opinion, and we all know what opinions are like. So I have allot to think about, will I go see The Dead any more after this year? Or just wait for PLQ to resurface? We are reaching the end of the line on this bus trip, and it saddens me...
When did a GD concert become a sing along?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Mike (Dead981) on Monday, August 09, 2004 - 01:16 pm: Edit Post

It wasn't just that Bobby messed up a verse he was completely lost. I was in the 4th row and could see the contortion on his face as he tried to figure out where he was. He also missed his cue after the jam and came in way late, warren gave a side way glance to look for him, as if you were thinking "aren't you supposed to be singing here?" But hey, I'm not complaing just pointing out what I saw. Hell, Jerry used to mess up the words all the time and no one ever cared. Musically Bobby never missed a beat.

Not sure how anyone could fall asleep at this show, but to each his own. I agree with the other posts that this was a pretty straightforward show, not really challenging the outer limits and not too much true improv, but they were definitely rocking. I thougt there was more jamming at SPAC but since I only saw 2 shows I obviously have a limited experience on which to base the band.

Strange night last night. While they arguably played better last night I vastly preferred saturdays show. The difference between super tight and rocked out (last night) and exploratory risk taking (saturday).

Another beautiful day, a bit hotter then saturday but still really nice, nothing oppresive. Caught the ferry over again and took a stroll around the scene, nothing out of the ordinary and if anything it didn't seem as festive as saturday. I get a little burned out on the Shakedown scenes some nights and yesterday was one of them, too many folks hawking too much stuff, wish for the 70's and a quieter lot scene sometimes. But at least I didn't see anyone getting hassled by security today.

Got in to check out the seats, 6th row right in front of Warren, very nice. Two more great nights from the folks at GDTS-TOO, many thanks. Went up to rest on the lawn with some friends, Hunter comes out at 6:45 and does a nice set, didn't have the tuning problems that he did the night before. Liked his set saturday better (once he got it going that is) but that's just me, always good to see Robert, a true link to the past. Did anyone that's still around this scene know Jerry earlier?

Dead come out at 8;10 and it's obvious that tonight is going to be the high energy show, SOTOTW-> Bertha was a barn burner and had the crowd up and going from the get go. Small jam into New Speedway which was well done but too many political overtones associated with this song these days for me to really enjoy it. But very well done, quiet ending to a cold stop. You Remind Me was very tight and professional (for the lack of a better word), has as Tamla/Motown/Muscle Shoals thing going for it, Sam Cooke could sing this song (would be great with horns) but was almost a little too slick. Here's where the set, which was already losing a little energy for me, started to fall apart. Stagger Lee was a disaster, I've never seen Bobby so lost before in 31 years of going to shows. He actually had to walk over to peek at Warrens screen to get the last verse, although the look on Warrens face during all of this was almost worth it. Missed cues, the whole works. It had some moments musically but could never recover completely from all of the flubs. They shouldn't split the vocals up on this, just get one person to do it. Baba Jingo was an indecipherable mess as far as the lyrics went but was jammed well and the Milestones in the middle was great, fully developed with both Warren and Jimmy taking leads (Jimmy killed this one). Jeff might have taken a solo here also and he was definately up in the mix tonight compared to the night before. Brown Eyed Women was ok but there were a few slips in it as well and it just didn't seem like the right song to get things back on track. Masons was welcome, very high energy but not over the top jamming. Take a break and see what the next set has in store.

I'm never a fan of mellow second set openers, to me this is where you come out and set the mood for the rest of the night. The Friend of the Devil was actually very well done but it cemented in my mind that this was going to be a song night with precious few jams. Stranger was welcome, I had wanted to hear how they treated this and it was good but not great, never over the top, and they came to a cold stop at the end of it instead of using the jam to go fishing. The list says that they went straight into Eyes but there was definately a complete stop before Eyes. Eyes was very well done, I'm actually a bit tired of this after all these years but this version was hot and really enjoyable, great interplay and a fantastic piano solo by Jeff. Minor jam out of this and this is where I'm waiting for a jamming breakout (Playin', Estimated, Lightnin') but no, the "it's all songs tonight" vibe took over and we go right into Cold Rain. Despite the fact that I didn't want to hear this (I was in a distinct minority here based on the crowd reaction) it was really well done, very tight, and an obvious crowd pleaser. I just wanted something a bit more adventerous at this point, critical point in the set and it didn't go the way I was hoping it would. However, Hard to Handle was smoking and did get a little wiggy sat times, the closest thing to some actual jamming all night long. Bobby took the first verse, Warren the second, and they did haemonies on the last, really well done with a nasty bite and plenty of grunge, the high point of the evening for me. Samson was another letdown for me, just not a vehicle for where I wanted to go tonight and although well played there were a few minor miscues and flubs. Drums/Space was much more interesting tonight the saturday, Jimmy and Mickey did some great beam/guitar jamming and a mellow space fell into a predictable Stella. This was well done (although it didn't touch the Dew from the night before) but seemed predictable and I was scared to death that we were going to get a Throwing Stones/NFA followup. Not to fear. 1,000 Stars was a bit of a surprise and done as well as I thought this band could do it, I've heard the Q do worse, but again it's placement here just didn't seem right to me. However, the opening beats of Gimme' Some Lovin' got everyone on their feet and moving. Really well done, I was hoping that Phil would sing it for old times sake but Warren did a fantastic job with it. Another highlight of the night. Then they botched the slam into NFA, Phil was just grinning at Billy who had a sheepish look on his face, somebody miscounted something there, but once it got going it was fine but again predictable and no big surprises. Can't comment on the encores, wanted to make sure that we made the first ferry back, sorry I missed the After Midnight but based on what went before I don't think that it would have changed my overall impression of the show. This is a strange band, they can obviously jam (see saturday night) but it seems that they prefer to work in a more structured style for the most part. They can be extremely tight, almost too tight to the exclusion of taking chances and letting a little of the X Factor creep in. Others have noted that it's frustrating to see that much talent on stage and not have the blow out shows that you know they could provide and I have to admit that's true, last years lineup seemed more exploratory to me while this year seem to be more about a tight presentation with great vocals and fewer surprises. Last night was what I expected this band to be based on earlier reports but I'm really glad that I got a jam show on saturday. Jimmy did tear up tonight as compared to Warren stepping up last night. I'd see them again, but I'm hoping for a PLQ tour this fall.

Second set pre-drums was beautiful. From FOTD thru Sampson - I thought the band had caught a groove and rode it into drums. The jam during Eyes and the Sampson jam was some of the best stuff i've heard live in a while. I think they've developed a personality of this point of the tour and have a unique sound. It's not the electric shredding of the Q - and not as laid back as last year's dead - it's really in between. And I finally "got" Jeff on keys. He's very good with this band - I miss Rob's vocals but he's won me over. Jimmy = Awesome!
Warren - what can you say? So many times you could feel him about to let loose and take over - yet he pulls back gracefully - Stella was gorgeous! Seemed like Warren was taunting Bobby during Hard to Handle - like "Bobby - think you could crank it up a notch? I'm about to blow you away!"
Great venue - weather was sublime - wonderful music and weekend all around!

Dan, thanks for posting your review and opinions. It's exactly how I felt after seeing the 2 Great Woods and 1 SPAC show. The only thing you dind't mention is that Jeff is essentially useless because they don't turn him up enough to hear him. But in listening to some PLQ over the last few days, I realize just how much of a loss it is to have no Rob up there. These guys are fun as hell to see, and I'm heading to PNC tomorrow night, but I don't see them getting anywhere near where PLQ does, or the GD for that matter. My observation from the first night Great Woods held up for the next 2 shows I saw - they sound like Phil and Friends doing Dark Star Orchestra versions of Grateful Dead songs, only they're way better than DSO and can't hold a candle to PLQ.

A buddy at work went to Sat. and Sun. Camden shows and said they were fun, but nothing to write home about.

what else can you say about those two shows?

sat was sick sick sick!!!!!!!

sunday first set was a struggle at best. 2nd set was phat, but they shot thier wad on sat nite. they rode me hard and put me away wet on sat, still have nothing in the tank because of sat!

ONE MORE SAT!

If you go into these shows hoping for anything close to the PLQ you will most definately be disapointed, that's not what this band does. Jeff does a fine job when you can hear him (like last night) but he doesn't have the flying fingers that Rob does and he's also trying to fit into a denser mix with the extra drums and third guitar. Rob has a cleaner platform to operate from in the Q, Jeff has to fight to be heard.

BTW, does Weirs kid ever smile?? I guess it's cute seeing her out there but she has this "children of the corn field" blank stare on her face every time I've seen her. Is this quality time with dad?

Whewww...Back in VA after a killer weekend. I thought both shows were top notch. 1st night was prolly a little better. I'll save the song by song reviews as its so subjective, though I thought musically it was pretty solid. Didnt have the PLQ jamming, but to me that can be a good thing. I kinda like to see more than 4 songs in a 1st set. There were some jam sections just not like PLQ.

Camden Security:
Wow was the security lax this year! The best Shakedown ive seen in some time. Plastic cups? Forget about it. Folks were taking their bottles right up to the entrance. I didnt see any camden police in the lot at all. There was maybe 1 or 2 patrols of yellow shirts but they were passive. Inside was more of the same. Way toned down from previous years. The times I was on the lawn I saw no staff walking around, & was able to smoke in peace.

Bob's Daughter:
Suprised i havent seen much mention of this except the pics from Sat. Bobs daughter got quite a bit of stage time this weekend. She first came out Saturday during Broken Arrow. This was the emotional peak of the weekend for me. First time ive ever broken down at a show. I have a 4 year old daughter, & seeing that kid run out to stand next to her papa was too much for me. 1st set of the 1st show for me this year, & I wasnt expecting it. Its been an extra long past year for me (have a 10mo old son as well), seemed like an eternity since last summer. Powerful feelings when you finally get back to a show, cruise the lot, to your seat, music starts........whew...
Anyways Ive always liked Broken --->>> but now it holds more meaning for me.

Sunday night mini-wier was running around the stage pretty much the entire time post space. During Stella she stood gently swaying under Bob's guitar. After a tune Bob would tell her to go side stage but soon as the music started she'd be right back out. Finally during the big group hug at the end, a women picked her up & brought her out to stand with the band. She gets set down next to Bob but instantly bolts off stage, to the amusment of the rest of the band.

Its these sort of things that make a show great for me. They more than pay off a few blown lyrics or lost jams.

Welp on to Nissan & Hotlanta, regret missing rest of NJ run but life duties call.

Thanks for letting me share zoners.

Peace

oh BTW..Warren played at the Mule Van on sunday night as well. We rolled up in time to catch him do "One" as the last tune.

Thats kinda of funny, but Im sure it must be pretty intimidating to be 5-6 and up there in front of 15000 strange people dancing around and howling things :-)

These guys are not the Q - it's a much different sound - a little deeper and richer. Lots of guitar going on - love it! Not better or worse - just a different animal. Listen closely to the second sets from the weekend shows - there was definately some wonderfull stuff going on in there. When this thing fully develops it will be very interesting - i'm hoping they let this baby grow some legs!

first off I had a BLAST !!!! weather was perfect,
philly is grate, and the band was sounding mighty fine to me. I'm thinking a few people around here are seeing too many shows. just
in case a few of you forgot, the grateful dead was NEVER perfect either. it's part of the fun from what I can recall. someone please leave some links to the perfect band so I can experiece some of this perfection you crave so
much. from what I can see there are a LOT of
fickle fans that didn't really like the dead in the later years even when jerry was alive. you
have to start asking yourself why you are even going to see bands that really bring you down.
for me it was GRATE !!! a few minor bumps in the road but pretty well played over all. that was
my first SOTOTW and it smoked. the biggest highlight of the night for me was Gimmie Some Lovin' !!!!! ye haaaaaaaw....... if I'm not mistaken that's the first one since 90 and only the 2nd one since brent died. they tried it at
msg and it didn't work. well, it worked on this night. on another note some of you moaner's, I mean zoners might have reached phil with your negative remarks about phil singing,
cause he is barely singing at all. I can't imagine why all the sudden he doesn't feel like singing. I for one enjoy phil's singing and hope he schruggs off anything he may have read around here. I guess it's kinda like going to a family dinner and sitting around afterwards saying just how crappy the food was, but we'll back tommorrow. WTF get off of my leg ! better yet, TAKE YOUR BALL GO HOME !!!!

really enjoyed the sittin opener

the first 3 really had me goin

sittin, bertha and a speedway and i was dancin around and smiling from ear to ear

then we got to the you remind me, a blown stagger lee and a baba jingo and for me that was a let down after an amazing opening 3

they regrouped with the brown eyed woman and a smokin masons got everyone back up and into it with another strong 1st set closer

2nd set was a lot of fun with the typical rock n roll dead style kinda show

a hell of a lot of fun, but a lot of easily guessed songs

the brokedown was a real nice touch, left me with a tear in my eye, and a lil melancholy knowing what today is and all

good show but paled in comparison to the 1st nite camden SCORCHER

i enjoyed the hell out of em and am already chompin at the bit for pnc

only 2 i have caught so far, but im psyched and lookin fwd to more

heck, I can't forget about a few other elements that made the weekend special. one was the turn out for the blood drive. got a nice pic with Phil said hi to Grahme. gave a lot of red blood cells and met many good people. went over and
got a nice pic with Billy and a few laughs. he better quite hugging my wife. lol.
Robert Hunter was a treat once again. that man has changed all of our lives. his wisdom is
forever inbedded in my soul.
the lights on this tour have been spectacular !!!! Candy is suppling some GRATE eye candy.
those of you who have yet to see them are in for a treat, don't let any of this negative BS get ya.

Hey, what about the guy who died, at the show? Right in the middle of Drums/Space, by speaker 3. That was a real bummer! Why NO INFORMATION about it?!?

"We can't get a pulse!" The EMS's shouted furiously... the girl was said to be trippin out - and totally screaming and freaking out on a security guard... we all thought someone better should've stepped in to console her...

What happened? I enjoyed the show as much as anyone, but - first things first, folks, please!!

A few words here.

Number 1: Nice lead by Bobby during FOTD@.
For a change, the acoustic wasn't drowned out, and others guitars were nice and quiet during Bobby's turn.

Tremendous 2nd set, especially Eyes and Hard To Handle. FOTD was a great opener, really had the place happy. I don't usually enjoy CRS that much, but it really rocked. Samson was a great howl, everybody yelling the chorus, nothing quite like the Jerry trademark licks however. Warren did a nice job on Stella, as on Dew Sat. Great intro into Stella, tease, then no, then yes ..., everybody had a chance to catch on and then the chords off of Wake of the Flood..

First set also awesome, especially Sittin (which I thought was gonna be Big River), Bertha which the crowd loved, and NSB to start. Why doesn't the band play Bertha a little more often, I've never seen it fail to excite the crowd, and I could certainly stand to see 2 during this NY/NJ run. Not much a fan of Stagger Lee, so I was entertained by Bobby missing the cue about 3 times for the first verse. Jeff pulled out a nice chance for Bobby to recover after the first miss, but he was still searching for "1940 ..."

Pretty much impossible to decipher Baba Jingo lyrics, but Mickey puts 'em out with a lot of verve, and I'm glad to see him happy. Intense jazz riffing by WH and especially Jimmy, I guess that part was Milestones. Real fine to hear Brown-Eyed Woman, a la Europe 72, although I like the faster licks Jerry throws in during the Without a Net era, those were missing. Phil doing the "old man getting on" line was sweet. Mason's absolutely smoked.

About the venue:

The forces in Camden were extremely kind to the kind people. Dancing in the aisles, very few hassles, a chance to dance on down during both Bertha and Eyes to Row B just behind the pit.

Plenty of room last night.

I did see the stretcher go by, the EMTs definitely looked frantic. I will pray for the best for our brother, please report if you hear the outcome.

Also saw someone flat on his back on Saturday, please guide the younger folk in the use of controlled substances, one of the biggest downers in the Dead experience has been the loss of life by band members and fans.

Last word here:

Really enjoy the postings, criticism and all. I notice some of the miscues, but they don't really bother me. I do like reading the opinions, especially as they come from connoisseurs of fine Dead music.

I always have a real good time at the shows, grooving on the love that the music builds inside of me. I like to think happy thoughts when I'm at the shows, they sustain me between tours.

My apologies if I've been singing too loud, I'm glad someone pointed out the singalong complaint.

Well, if Saturday's show was DEEP, this show was SHALLOW!!!! There couldn't have been more of a contrast between 2 shows. This show brought us back to the Mansfield/Scranton style of 1-1/2 1st sets, stop/starts, and no jams - guess all you beer guzzler types love this but it ain't why I'm there. Yes, I'd been jonesin' for Sittin' On Top, but not if it cost me the rest of the show, which it basically did. I mean, the setlist ain't all that bad, actually. You could tell from early on they didn't really "have it" this night - especially Bobby - man, WTF??? - even w/the telepromters, he forgot whole bunches of lyrics in almost everything he attempted - Stagger Lee being the worst (as compared to a GREAT version in Mansfield). Gimme Some Lovin' and NFA featured absolutely NO guitar solos by ANYBODY - very disappointing when you have 2 lead guitarists on stage and they're all waiting for Bobby to tell them what to do - yuk!! Nothing worse than a jam-less NFA (just like Friday Red Rox too) - gimme those '76-'77 or PLQ versions anyday! - I mean, why even bother doing a song like that which is basically all about the jamming? They did make up for it w/the encore - so you could say the show was bookended by the opening Sittin' on Top and the ending After Midnight with A LOT of filler in between.

Sounds like the good old GD to me. On one night on and not so on another : ) and what's a GD concert without Bobby blowing some lyrics?

Great weekend and to top it off I had the pleasure of being second row pit first set on Sunday in front of the stack of speakers watching the woman who signs to the hearing impaired just getting blown away by the power of the music that I have grown to know so well. Can't get much better than that.

Heads up kids if you miss the ferry back to Philly the cab ride is about $35.

long drive from MI(there and back again), but well worth the time...
sat night definately a heavier show...lady>dew>terrapin--freakin sweet!--really enjoyed the jam back into "inspiration", quite a build up before letting it go...
very heavy space with hints of Shine on...,TNK, Victim...
Golden Road>Viola=blow out...best "dead" GR version i've seen/heard(excepting PLQ)...bobby got the 2nd verse right, instead of repeating the third verse twice...
Viola was the monster...some of the most exploritory(sp?) jamming(for any length of time, that is) that i've heard this tour(i also saw 4 mid-west shows)...they took us on a trip down into the earths grumbling, rumbling core where the gears and cogs made of metals unimaginable grind away evoking alien groans and emitting inner/inter-celestial sound waves all the while odd creatures of ever-changing shapes and dance and copulate, laugh and sing...
here, we hovered with the music: a cacophony of sounds: the history of rock and roll as told through a blissed-out blues outlaw...
from the depth of the earth we were then rocketed out into space, the messege now high and spinning far into dark, mysterious quarks and neurons with no landing pad in sight...
but lo! there on the horizen a dark sun rises and lights our way into...The Midnight Hour...a fun, yet short, bonding experience between bobby and warren...kind of fell apart at the end...luckily the Viola net was there to catch the fall...
Strong, rockin Sat nite to ground us to the earth that we still have to live on...
the encore revealed our guide for the evening...no other than good ol' Cosmic Charlie...with his calliopes, canoes, and sea-side zoos...all the while Mother is calling us back home...sweet, sweet harmonies here, folks!!
sorry Ma, not time to head home yet...SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY...
definately more straight up, good time, song and dance kind of a show...
highlights: cumberland sounding jam>sittin on top..nice energenic start...
personal highlight-Milesones!-despite being sandwiched between the baba jingo wonder bread-a great jam and tribute to the jazz roots of the music...
MASON'S CHILDREN...a fantastic, pycho-dance-a-delic 1st set finish...
2nd set, kind of warm, hot, warm, hot...
hot...EYES!-thank you PHIL...with some fine support from the rest of the crew...
HARD TO frickin' HANDLE!!!--great, raging version...another warren/bobby buddy, bonding experience...
stella was good, touching...thought it would have been better earlier in the show...maybe in place of the FOTD, or in 1st set...
the bust out: GIMMIE SOME muthafuckin LOVIN!!!!
YEAH, YEAH, YEAH, BABY! high energy Midland shout out...been waiting for this one(yeah, i know they did it with winwood-that is not the same-trust me)...too bad no PHIL vox, though...Warren came through for us on this one-thanks!
just so they were sure they would send us home feeling great, not just good...
2X ENCORE!
AFTER MIDNIGHT--alright mama...this is some really good shit...and i aint just talkin about the "flowers and the chocolates"(it's not valentines YET love is everywhere)...funky, dirty grooves that seemed to go on forever...jam slowly transforming(thouht i heard keep on growin coming, sigh)...
a nice emotional finish with the Broken Down...fare ye well, indeed, my friends...
a great, great journy...some out of control music with some over the top moments...for now, tour is over for me(alpine>deercreek>pineknob>blossom>camdenx2)...will be relying on the zone, streams...keep up the good work...see you in the fall...PEACE

Review from Philly Inquired as of Tuesday

Mentions the stretcher, doesn't mention anyone dying.

Posted on Tue, Aug. 10, 2004

Sold on Dead oldies

By Fred Beckley

For The Inquirer

Jerry Garcia's still dead and, unlike Keith Richards, he doesn't tour anymore. But his songs still do, and the living Dead franchise nearly filled the Tweeter Center twice last weekend playing them.

On Sunday night, Bob Weir and ubiquitous jam band sideman Warren Haynes - loosely, Garcia's replacement - led the seven-man Dead through a three-hour set filled with favorites ("Bertha," "Friend of the Devil") and, predictably, sprinkled with surprises (Miles Davis' "Milestones," J. J. Cale's "After Midnight"). Except for the inevitable "Drums/Space" excursion, they repeated nothing from Saturday night's show.

As usual, the Dead faithful bent the rules, but behaved well. They ignored the smoking ban, ignored seat assignments, and especially ignored the security guards trying to enforce both. People danced, balloons flew, and at least one person left on a stretcher.

But nearly everyone was polite, and though long on gray ponytails, the tie-dyed crowd spanned generations. Parents brought their adult children, grandparents brought babies. The babies liked the balloons.

Haynes - also of Gov't Mule and the Allman Brothers, and a scheduled soloist last night at the Annenberg's Zellerbach Theatre - proved an adequate but indistinctive front man. His solos were short, his singing plaintive. No one commanded the Dead, and even percussionist Mickey Hart sang.

Nearly everything the Dead did they had also done with Garcia three decades ago. The newer material ("You Remind Me") didn't hold the crowd. Dead shows have always been events, and so was Sunday night's. But each year they seem more like simulations.

Some one posted how many different tunes are they doing this tour??

So far they have played 182 different tunes. Not bad for a band that started rehearaling in May '04.

At the end of tour if anyone wants a copy of stat sheet, i will be more than happy to pass on
Dave

it's crazy to see all the different takes on the sunday night show. i thought sittin on top of the world>bertha was the best opener of the 8 shows i've seen so far. actually it the whole show was best of all the shows i saw ( right behind l.a.)in my opinion-- i never heard a head say that they didn't like eyes of the world as a song before--EVER! i'm also avery tough critic of the band but i found little fault in this show. i know bobby f-ed up the lines in stagger lee but that certainly wasn't the heaviest song of the night seeya at j.b.

Now for a piece of my reality.
Camden shows were very good………not PLQ mind you, but very good nevertheless. Had great seats and beautiful weather for both. I was overdue for some shows (last being PLQ in November and ABB at the Beacon in March). Montage and the Camden shows filled the void quite well. As always, the camaraderie of my family of friends was my highlight….. LG (special thanks for everything) Ed, Lightening Wil, Mitch, KaraokeKody, zealous row-monitor Less, Duck, David (the distinguished Philly New Warrior Center Director), Chocolate George, and special guest Father Nick (and son and his sweetone) all made my shows the pleasure they were.

On Sat night, at the break, I ran into a friend from my health club who was privy to the setlist (he plans and manages events and is being courted by a security/safety company that does many rock shows), so he told me what was coming and it was fun calling out the songs before they were played. I enjoyed how they wove the second set. Montage was one of those disconnected song-only shows and the rain came hard and unexpected. Highlights of my 3 shows were: WT-> the 11 at Montage, Alligator opener, Mister Charlie and Morning Dew on Sat night at Camden, Sittin on Top opener, Eyes, Stella, Cold Rain, GSL and NFA, Sunday. It had to be the best 3 nights of encores I have ever experienced: Attics, Cosmic, After Midnight-> Brokedown (perfect for my birthday which is forever linked to Jerry's deathday).

I did the drip on Sunday and the whole scene Sunday at the Red Cross center was fun. It both cracked me up and perturbed me to see scammers skip the drip part and go right to the meet Phil segment. I did what I could to eliminate that situation. While I was laying there, a nice guy took my picture and gave me his Grateful Photography card. He said he was an amateur photographer who posts pictures on the zone and mentioned was asked to photograph Dewit's wedding. He said Warren Haynes was slated to play at it (apparently Dew is marrying a rock writer she met on the zone who apparently knows Warren because he interviewed him). Warren had to cancel because he will be on the road with Mule (performing here in Philly the next night). After seeing Warren open at Montage, barely missing his free sets Sat and Sunday at the mule van parked in front of the Tweeter in Camden and what I hear was an exceptional performance at Penn Monday night, I got a glimpse of this man’s non-stop workload. His devotion to his music and passion for live performances reminds me of another heavyset icon I once met.

It was great meeting with Phil...he looked bright-eyed and healthy ..... we had a nice conversation.....he was very gracious. He asked me my name and then said "What's happening Al" and I told him I just completed my first gallon of blood thanks to his influence. He quipped "you just gave a gallon and your still standing"...... He signed my 11-30-03 disc cover and he looked at it and said Philly was the peak of the last tour. I told him I called that show the WatchTower show and he laughed.
I thanked him for giving us the soundboards and told him I had a shitty copy of 11-29-03 and I asked him to put out a board of that show and he said he will.(hope he remembers). I noticed his son Graham standing next to him and I said hey Sugar Mag Graham, what’s up? Phil went on to tell me Graham plays guitar and I said I saw him play the Sugar Magnolia at the Philly show and thought the moment was cool. He gave and signed leftover posters from the 2000-2001 Kaiser New Year show. I asked his son to sign it too and Phil laughed and said, "Graham, your first autograph"..... and he said "not even close Dad." (I can only imagine how cool it is to be Phil's son.) Phil asked me how I liked the show Sat night. I told him the setlist had his name all over it and it was a great weave and he said "really, you think so?" He asked where I was sitting....... I told him section P, center, actually in front of him,in the Philzone...... and he said "section PZ....cool". JC Juanis was sitting next to Phil and I had run into him at the show Sat night and had a brief conversation telling him I would see him at the blood drive. Seeing JC sitting next to Phil I said JC "who would have thought you were going to turn out a rock star and he corrected me and said 'country singer"........Phil said "I've known this guy for 20 years and had no idea myself." Of course, I told Phil how much I loved the Q and I asked him if and when I can expect to see them again and that's when he told me this November and I asked....... here in Philly? And he said "yes" and someone behind Phil said I'm going to hold you to that Phil and he said "no problem." Phil said he will try his best to deliver a better show that night (Sunday). I told him if its anywhere close to Sat night, I'd consider it a great birthday present. Sunday night, thanks once again to LG, my tickets were row A in front of Phil and at one point during Cold Rain, I think he was looking at me and smiling..........after midnight, I turned gratefully 48.

Next stop for me, Nick and Lou's Southern hospitality in Raleigh

Yup

sittin>bertha and new speedway SMOKED! Liked the twist on the Samson and got an After Midnight : ) (keep that one going). Guess I shouldn't have said Saturday was a much better show. Both were damn good, just liked the flow of Saturday better and song selection as a whole.

I'll third how laxed the security was. Blown away actually.

Bring on the fall tour.......

About the 'stretcher' - there was none. The EMT's grabbed the dying/dead guy by his clothes, from all corners, and ran with him, all the way, like that. So, it was worse, I tell ya, than has yet even been described. Who was that guy? What happened? Someone should know... and please fill us in. Such things hurt us all, in more ways than one! Thanks to all who've expressed sympathy/empathy. BTW, I preferred the Sunday show, myself. :-)

this is what i saw... i stepped out during drums/space to use the restroom a make a quick call. 3 or 4 emts and a few people running frantically with someone on a stretcher from the lawn seating down the ramp to an ambulance right outside the gate. maybe the stretcher met them on the ramp.

this is what i overheard someone telling a few others about 3 or 4 minutes after i saw the stretcher go by.... the individual got somewhat unruly, enough to get secuity there. apparently the man got into it with one of the security guards and another one of them belted the guy in the head. he went down and out. apparently the had the paddles on him and couldn't revive him. that's all i heard. it was a very sad scene. i am very surprised that no one has any more details, especially whether this guy made it or not
